A WORD FROM THE PRESIDENT
Hello, knitters!
My message this month is simple: a huge thank-you to
all of the Guild members who have stepped forward in
response to my plea for volunteers, and an appeal to
the remaining members to consider how they might
best
First, the thank-you: within 48 hours of sending out the
call for help, we had eight new volunteers in several key
roles. I look forward to introducing them all at the February meeting. (I'm hesitant to publish their names in this
month's newsletter, until we've had more time to talk with
each of them and make sure that each person is in the best
position for their skills and interests.) On a personal level,
I must say that I hadn't realized how much anxiety I was
carrying for the Guild's future until the e-mails started to
roll in, and the weight lifted. From an organizational perspective, this fresh influx of energy and ideas is invigorating, and bodes extremely well for future activities! Of
course, we couldn't operate without our longstanding volunteers either -- so THANK YOU, to each one of you
who finds a way to give back to the Guild.
To those who are still mulling over how or whether they
can contribute in some way: if you're not sure, please drop
me a line or give me a call, and let's chat. Tell me about
your availability, and your interests, and I can pair you up
with a task. It might be small -- dropping off a stack of
brochures on your next LYS visit, or taking Zehrs receipts
in for reimbursement -- or it could be larger, depending on
what you feel up to doing. One thing is for sure: the Guild
will be better for your effort.
See you at the meeting,
Anne

Now go check out your library!
A guild member was wondering how to decipher some
of the symbols from the Japanese knitting books she
borrowed. In addition to Japanese knitting books,
we also have a booklet of Japanese Symbols, normally
stored with our Japanese magazines. The Needle Arts

2011 KWKG WORKSHOP
WEEKEND
FEBRUARY 26/27, 2011
vided with a list of needles and notions required; a materials kit to make the in-class samples will be supplied at
the class and is included in the cost of registration. (Max
16 students)
With such an expansive topic as “Colour” to start from
this year, I’m really excited to have put together a weekend of fantastic colourwork skills workshops.
First, on Saturday, February 26th, Kate Atherley will be
leading “Fair Isle Bootcamp,” to teach you everything
you need to know to be a confident Fair Isle knitter.
Through practice swatches, you’ll master reading the
patterns and charts, and working with multiple colours both one-handed and two-handed methods, both in-theround and flat. In the second half of the class, you’ll be
provided with the motifs and pattern to create your own
pair of custom fingerless mitts. Upon registration, students will be provided with a materials list for swatching; a materials kit to make the fingerless mitts will be
supplied at the class and is included in the cost of registration. (Max 24 students)
On Sunday, February 27th, Carolyn Mele will be leading
“Double Knitting De-mystified,” where you will learn
how to create a reversible fabric with two different right
sides. Through practice swatches, your hands will become comfortable with double knitting maneuvers,
you’ll learn how to read double knitting charts, and how
to work one-handed or two-handed styles. In addition,
Carolyn will demonstrate all kinds of practical and timesaving applications where double knitting techniques
can be applied. Upon registration, students will be pro-
Things you need to know for BOTH workshops:

Centre Zehr’s store, 750 Ottawa Street South (Ottawa at

bring any outside food and beverages to class
• students are on their own for lunch, many inexpensive
hot and cold food options are readily available in the
Zehr’s dining area on-site
• registration is open only to Guild members in good
standing until February 1, at which point it is opened to
the greater public
• cost to register is $75 for members/$90 for nonmembers, payable in cash or by cheque made out to
“Kitchener- Waterloo Knitter’s Guild”
• cancellations made before February 1 will be refunded
in full; cancellations made between February 1-14 will
be refunded $50 of their paid registration; cancellations
made after February 14th will not be refunded

WHITE CHOCOLATE RASPBERRY CHEESECAKE
Ingredients
1 cup chocolate cookie crumbs
3 tablespoons white sugar
1/4 cup butter, melted
1 (10 ounce) package frozen raspberries
2 tablespoons white sugar
2 teaspoons cornstarch
1/2 cup water
2 cups white chocolate chips
1/2 cup half-and-half cream
3 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup white sugar
3 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions
I am looking for a size 15 mm, 36" circular needle to use
1) In a medium bowl, mix together cookie crumbs,
for one project only. If anyone in the guild has one they
3 tablespoons sugar, and melted butter. Press mixture
into the bottom of a 9 inch springform pan.
2) In a saucepan, combine raspberries, 2 tablespoons sugar, cornstarch, and water. Bring to boil,
and continue boiling 5 minutes, or until sauce is thick.
Strain sauce through a mesh strainer to remove seeds.
3) Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C).
In a metal bowl over a pan of simmering water, melt
white chocolate chips with half-and-half, stirring occasionally until smooth.
4) In a large bowl, mix together cream cheese and
1/2 cup sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs one at a time.
Blend in vanilla and melted white chocolate. Pour
half of batter over crust. Spoon 3 tablespoons raspberry sauce over batter. Pour remaining cheesecake batter into pan, and again spoon 3 tablespoons raspberry
sauce over the top. Swirl batter with the tip of a knife
to create a marbled effect.
5) Bake for 55 to 60 minutes, or until filling is set.
Cool, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 8
hours before removing from pan. Serve with remaining raspberry sauce.

YARN TABLE
The yarn table is a great way to get of any yarns you
don't want anymore, and to make room in the new year
for new stash. Just set prices and bring a list of your
yarns/quatinties/prices with your name on it.
Don’t forget to scope out the yarn table for new-to-you
bargains, too!
