encouraged! Or, it could be a jacket, scarf, hat, tie, dress, or
even a piece of jewelry! If you have something special to show
off, please contact Lisa at 530-757-5696.
Don’t forget our fundraising raffle! Senior Center
groups and community organizations have generously donated baskets and
gifts to this fun event. Raffle tickets are $1 and can be purchased at the
event. All proceeds go to the Senior Center. If you would like to contribute
to the raffle, please call Alisa at 530-757-5696.

TRANSPORTATION
Walking with Poles Workshops
Transportation Options
Using Walking Poles Effectively: The Basics
Thursday, April 2, 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. $25
The class will cover the technical aspects of
walking poles: what to look for when buying poles;
how to adjust the length of the poles and judging
the right length; how the strap is important in holding the poles. Two
styles of walking with poles will be
presented. We will practice each
style walking around the grounds of
the center. Class size is limited to
ensure personal attention.
Come explore your transportation options!
Learn the ins and outs of riding the Unitrans bus,
qualifying for Davis Community Transit, or getting
back on your bicycle. Meet with agency representatives and take a ride on a DCT or Unitrans bus downtown for a firsthand experience.
The Travel Training workshop to be held
Saturday, April 25, 9:00
a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at the center, will help improve
awareness, understanding, and usage of local transportation services. This program is free and light
refreshments will be provided.
Walking Poles: Practice Walk
Thursday, April 9, 10:15 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. $15
Review and reinforce the basic techniques.
Learn movements that enhance your uprightness,
flexibility and power. Have fun being out & about.
The walk starts at the Senior Center and
goes through Central Park.
Healthcare Decision Making
Fewer than half of Americans older than 65 have a living
will (in California it’s called an
advance directive). Without that
document, which spells out your
health care wishes if you are unable to speak for yourself, your
loved ones might have to guess. Disagreements
could cause delays and could end up in court.
On National Healthcare Decisions Day, Thursday, April 16 at 12:30 - 3:00 p.m. join us for a
Healthcare Decision-Making Workshop. A representative from Yolo Hospice will present one of the
best advance care planning tools, Five Wishes.
You’ll be provided with your own copy of the document, so you can started (and get help if you wish.)
Please sign up by calling 530-757-5696.
Davis Community Transit
We welcome Amanda
Kaschube to the DCT team! Amanda comes to us with experience
from Unitrans.
An important reminder for all of our customers is that we have a voicemail system that receives
messages seven days a week, 24 hours a day. When
you call the dispatch line at 530-747-8240 you must
leave a message in order for your call to be returned.
All messages are returned in the order they are received. If the dispatcher does not answer the phone
there are no alternate numbers to call. You must
leave a message on the DCT main line 530-747-8240
in order for your call to be returned.
Smart Driver Class
AARP will offer a Smart Driver
Course at the Senior Center Wednesday
& Thursday, April 22 & 23, 12:30 - 4:30
p.m. Many insurance companies offer discounts to
older drivers who successfully complete the course.

Exploring FamilySearch Family Trees
Strummin’ the Ukulele
Our own Davis Genealogy Club member,
Lois Richter, has explored the recent changes
made to FamilySearch.org and found exciting new
ways to move her research, and ours, forward. In
her presentation Tuesday, April 21, 1:00 - 3:00
p.m., she’ll explain how to use a community family
tree to share our information with everyone
without compromising the research on our
computers. Opening up her own case histories,
Lois will illustrate how she accesses, learns from,
and adds to the evolving community family tree.
Lois will conduct a follow-up hands-on
workshop at the center on the following Monday,
April 27 at 1:00 p.m. in which participants will be
able to work with their own data and upload
information to the tree. Workshop participants are
encouraged to bring their own laptops. Reservations for the workshop are requested and will be
taken during the general meeting.
Our library remains open to the public on
Wednesdays and Fridays, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Clear Your Clutter
Do you attempt to organize
an area of your home, only to
change your mind because it feels so
overwhelming? Are you unclear
about what to keep, what to let go
of? Are you ready to calm the chaos?
Professional organizer Claudia Smith, of Clear
Your Clutter Consulting, will give a presentation on
three simple steps to clear your clutter and keep your
space organized. Her talk begins at 1:00 p.m.
Wednesday, April 22. Reserve your seat by calling
530-757-5696.
Organics Collection Explained
The City of Davis is considering implementing a program to
collect food scraps from customers and increase the City’s waste
diversion. The organics collection
program would allow yard waste
piles to be placed in the street for pick-up the first
week of every month and weekly pick-up during the
leaf-drop season (mid-October through midDecember). In addition to this, customers would have
an organics cart for yard materials, food scraps, paper
napkins, paper plates, etc. that is picked up every
week.
Learn more on Tuesday, April 7 at 10:30 a.m.
when the city’s recycling coordinator, Jennifer Gilbert,
returns to the center to explain the program. Call the
center at 530-757-5696 to reserve your spot.
Tax Aide Winds Down
AARP’s Tax-Aide program concludes this
month. Although the services offered by the
program are always free, donations to the Davis
Senior Center are welcome to help offset the costs
of photocopying and mailing documents.
In addition, we thank the skilled, dedicated
volunteers who help so many people with their tax
returns every year!

A Message from Senior Center Staff
March 17, 2015
Dear Friends of the Davis Senior Center,
With Senior Citizens of Davis’ recent decision to dissolve the non-profit organization, the Senior Center staff would like to thank all SCD members – past and present – for their role in launching the Senior Center and supporting it for over 40 years. Words cannot express our gratitude. But don’t worry, the Senior Center, SCD’s legacy, will go on!
For us it feels like a bittersweet graduation. Like a good parent, the SCD organization gave the center,
its programs and staff all the support needed to succeed independently. While it’s hard to say goodbye to
SCD, we are committed to keeping the Senior Center vibrant and relevant, and to helping it evolve and grow
for the Boomer Generation and beyond. To do that, we still need your help!
SCD has always played a key role in augmenting taxpayer support for the center. Without SCD, we’ll
need a different avenue for program and facility enhancements. Here’s where you come in. Now that there
are no SCD membership dues, we ask you to consider donating to the Davis Senior Services Endowment or
Improvement Funds managed by the Sacramento Region Community Foundation and its affiliate, the Yolo
Community Foundation. The funds, established in 2012, are dedicated solely for Davis Senior Center services
and facilities. The funds have been growing, thanks to generous donations from individuals and the George
and Lena Valente Foundation. Detailed information on donating to either fund is available at the center.
However, if you want to make it easy, simply do the following:


Write a check to Davis Senior Services Endowment Fund.
Mail or drop it by the Senior Center, 646 A Street, Davis CA 95616
Any amount is appreciated (SCD annual dues were $25/person ) and you’ll be
publicly acknowledged as a donor to the fund (unless you ask that your donation
remain anonymous). Donations to this fund are tax-deductible.
(Subscriptions to the Scene newsletter are separate. Please call the Senior Center for more information.)
Our center’s story is one of community vision and great generosity. We thank you for your ongoing
support moving forward!
Davis Senior Center Staff,
Maria, Alisa, Libby, Lisa
