If you would like to submit a brief summary of your research, please send a half page to Ruth O’Donnell Dr Arjun Ghosh is a Cardiology Clinical Research Fellow at the International Centre for Circulatory Health, National Heart and Lung Institute and a Clinical Career Development Fellow at the MRC Unit for Lifelong Health and Ageing. Arjun has very successfully recently presented his work at international meetings, won prizes and taken part in parliamentary debates. This month, we invite him to tell us all about it. Set For Britain Arjun attended parliament on 12 March to present his work to a range of politicians and a panel of expert judges, as part of SET for Britain – an organisation which supports Britain’s early-stage and early-career research scientists, engineers and technologists. Arjun describes his experience: “I was excited to take part in the event as it was my first time in parliament and it was a fantastic opportunity to give visibility to my work, which will benefit many patients, to key decision makers in healthcare and to other scientists. I presented a poster on the effects that raised blood pressure in early adult life can have on the heart in late adulthood. I was judged against dozens of other scientists in the only national competition of its kind, after being shortlisted from hundreds of applicants. I wanted to show the importance of the work researchers do to change clinical practice, and how necessary it is for that work to be supported at a government and policy level. During the day I learned about related research and also got to discuss possible future collaborations. It was quite a different experience from my day job, and I enjoyed the challenge of communicating my research to a lay audience. I would definitely recommend it to other Imperial researchers.” American College of Cardiology Conference 2012 Arjun also presented some of his PhD findings at the biggest Cardiology conference in the world, the American College of Cardiology conference, held in Chicago last month. One of his abstracts on the importance of duration of diabetes on future cardiac structure was the top-ranked abstract submitted from the UK and he was presented with an award at a joint British Cardiovascular Society – American College of Cardiology session during the congress. Another abstract of his, focusing on the importance of long-term blood pressure history in determining future cardiac structure, was selected for media promotion during the conference. Arjun felt that it was a very rewarding experience: “It was the first time I had presented my work at an American conference and the ability to meet and discuss my work with American and other international Cardiologists was very useful. I was also able to get my message across to a lay audience thanks to the press conference and interviews that I participated in.” British Cardiovascular Society 2012 Some of Arjun’s other PhD work submitted to the annual British Cardiovascular Society conference (Manchester, May 2012) has been recognised for its excellence and Arjun has been awarded a travel grant to the congress.
