Marly Bird
Marlaina “Marly” Bird fled the world of financial services to launch her Yarn Thing podcast and hasn’t looked back since. To Marly, a
bi-craftsy girl who both knits and crochets, the yarn is the star not how you work with it. She’s creative director for Bijou Basin Ranch
Yarns and the co-author of Curvy Crochet (Leisure Arts, 2011). You’ve seen her designs in Knitter’s Magazine, Knit Simple, Interweave
Crochet, Interweave Knits, Knitscene, Inside Crochet, Wild Fiber, Crochet Today, Knitting Today and Petite Purls, and in the books
Knitter’s Book of Socks, Unexpected Afghans, Simply Crochet, Perfectly Plus and Knitting Plus. In her spare time she is a wife to a very
understanding husband, raises three kids and teaches at her local yarn store in suburban Denver. Enter the world of Marly at www.

NEW CR9 KnOOKING: KNITTING WITH A CROCHET HOOK Knooking
is the new knitting! The Knook is a specialized crochet hook that creates true knitted
fabric while the attached cord completely prevents dropped stitches! It is a great way
for crocheters and true beginners to learn to knit the easy way. No more fiddling with
two sticks...one hook and a cord is all you need. In this course Marly will teach basic
techniques for both the right-hand and left-hand stitcher including: knook basics,
basic stitches, decreases, increases and understanding instructions. Each student will
leave with a sample swatch with everything they learned and a pattern for a scarf
to complete at home. Yarn lovers everywhere are discovering that the Knook makes
knitting fun!! Materials: One ball/skein #4 weight yarn and the Knook. Optional Materials
Fee: $10 for Knook tool.

Cindy Craig
I learned to knit while chaperoning Girl Scouts in Norway. While in our hospitality home, I asked the mom to teach me how to knit,
and because I was pregnant with my first son, we started a baby sweater. She had the back finished in two nights, and I was still on
the ribbing!
I have learned so much since then and now spend my days managing Studio Knitting & Needlepoint in Kansas City, MO. I love
helping people learn to knit or crochet — especially, when they get stuck! I knit everywhere I go and am frequently questioned on
the sidelines of the soccer field and at PTA and Cub Scout meetings. I love to design and write patterns.
Friday 10:30am - 11:30am
CR3 Crochet buttons How many hours have you spent searching to no avail
for buttons for your project? Consider making buttons that are a perfect match for your
garment. Crochet buttons are simple to make and will look good, too. Learn to make two
different kinds of buttons using only basic crochet skills. Materials: 2 10-yard pieces of #2
weight yarn; E, F, or G crochet hook.

NEW TT11 WorLdly CAST-ONS Become a world traveler through your knitting.
This class will explore the Old Norwegian cast-on, the Estonian cast-on, and the Channel
Island cast-on. Learn the benefits of each and discover how you might apply them in your
next project. Materials: 5 yards each of two colors #4 weight yarn; US 8 needle.

TT23 charts can be your friends Don’t let a chart scare you. Many

knitters prefer working from charts over written directions. Charts can make knitting a
lot easier once you get the hang of them. In this class you will learn the basic symbols,
the basic rules for chart reading, and some tricks that make it easy. We’ll practice knitting
from a simple chart while making a cozy for your coffee cup (or soda can). Materials: lightcolored, smooth, #4 weight yarn; US 7 needle.

TT6 Knitted Miters Basic knitting skills such as casting on, picking up, and
decreasing — combined with color and texture — create endless possibilities. Mitered
knitting can become squares, rectangles, diamonds, or strips and is the foundation of
some of today’s best designs. You will learn to make a basic mitered square, to join squares
as you go, and to build the squares into a project. You will also receive a pattern for a
Kindle or iPad cover and begin the project in class. Materials: 100 yards #5 weight yarn in 2
complementary colors, locking stitch markers, and US 9 or 10 needles.

TT18 Uh-Oh! Fixing Mistakes All knitters make mistakes. It can be
frustrating when you can’t fix them yourself so you rip out and start over numerous times.
This class focuses on the most common skills beginning knitters need: picking up dropped
stitches, correcting mistakes a few rows back, and understanding the difference between
ripping back and un-knitting. These skills will help you relax when an ‘oops’ comes along.
Materials: Practice amount of #4 weight yarn, US 8 or 9 needles, F, G, or H crochet hook.
Saturday 2:00pm - 3:00pm
NEW TT13 Invisible JOINS — well, nearly invisible Joining yarn in the
middle of the row can be frustrating if the join is noticeable. This class will do the Russian
braided, and the knotted joins. Learn which join to do based on the fiber content of your
yarn. Your next project will fly because you can’t wait to get to the end of the ball to try
your new skills. Materials: 5 yards each of two colors #4 weight wool yarn, 5 yards each of two
colors #4 weight cotton yarn; US 8 needles.

are used for heels of socks, bust darts, and shoulder shaping. You will learn basic short rows

virtually invisible. Included in this class is a pattern for a Curly Q Scarf that we will begin.

Kellie learned to knit as a child and has been designing and teaching knitting professionally
for nine years. She loves to help students feel confident and content with their knitting.
Friday 10:30am - 11:30am
tt4 look, no double points Come and learn the two popular ways of using
long circular needles to knit on small circumferences, such as socks, sleeves, baby hats, and
the like. You’ll never have to use double points again unless you want to! The first method
uses two 24-inch circulars. The second way, commonly called The Magic Loop, uses one long
(32-40 inch) circular needle. Both methods can be used on any circumference of knitting,
enabling knitters to go from cuff to toe of a sock or brim to crown of a hat without ever having
to change needles. Knitters should already be comfortable with knitting in the round or have at
least tried it before class. Materials: all needles should be US 7 or 8: two 24-inch circular needles, each
of a different material if possible (such as one of metal and one of bamboo); one 32- or 40-inch circular
needle of any material; few yards of smooth, plain, #4 weight yarn, wool or wool-blend preferred.
Friday 12:30pm - 1:30pm or Saturday 3:30pm - 4:30pm
TT2 Continental Knitting Continental knitting involves tensioning the yarn in
the hand holding the unworked stitches (for most people this is the left hand) and using the
other needle to pick stitches through in a quick and efficient manner. It is a great technique to
have in your knitting repertoire. It can solve a multitude of knitting problems or just be a good
companion to the way you already knit. Your instructor will teach the basics of tensioning the
yarn and picking the stitches rather than throwing. We will learn the knit and purl stitches and
have time to practice this useful method of knitting. Materials: Any yarn and appropriate needles
for sampling.

always be looking at the right side, even if you are knitting flat. The work is never turned, and
the knitter cleverly works both knit and purl stitches from the same side. This saves time when
working on a very small number of stitches as for bobbles or entrelac, and it saves effort when
working on a very large number of stitches. Your instructor will teach the basics of working
knit and purl stitches from the right side of the work. There is time for practice and a
discussion of how to use this technique in your every-day knitting. Materials: Any yarn and

CR8 Crochet a Classic: the Granny Square The granny square — crochet rite
of passage and icon of the 60s. And more fun than a barrel of monkeys, given how quickly you
can turn odds and ends of yarn into cute motifs to applique on jeans, join together for a scarf, or
assemble into an afghan. This class is geared for those who know how to work flat, but who have
never worked in the round: we’ll join and work into a center ring, change colors, and weave in ends
as we go. Materials: Small amounts of #4 weight yarn in 3 colors, F or G crochet hook.
Saturday 12:30pm - 1:30pm
PP3 Knit One Below Columns of color on one side, blended swallowtails on the other!
Column pattern makes a fabulous fabric, produced by working only 1 color per row. Learn
the best cast-on for K1B fabrics, how to find the stitch in the row below on both sides of the
work, and how to use the slide manuever to get the yarn you need next. This class will get you
started; you won’t want to stop. Materials: 2 balls (110 yards each) #4 weight yarn in coordinating
but CONTRASTING colors (1 ball can be variegated) and a US 9 or 10 circular needle.

called Fair Isle knitting, this technique for stranding colors across the back lets you create brightly
colored and patterned fabrics. While working on a small bag/hat project you’ll practice getting
an even tension (not too tight, not too loose), learn ways to prevent yarns from twisting, and try
different holding techniques. Come get a taste of this classic knitting technique! Materials: 2 balls
(50 yards each) #5 weight yarn in 2 complementary colors and a US 10½ circular needle.
