FIND US ON: WEBSITE FACEBOOK N E W S L E T T E R June 2014 European Forum for Restorative Justice CALLS FOR PAPERS International Symposium on Military Operational Research 29th July to 1st August ISMOR is an annual international symposium sponsored by the UK Ministry of Defence. Its purpose is to foster excellence in analysis and its application to defence and security through providing a forum for staff in government departments and agencies, international organisations, academia and industry. It is open to all who would like to participate in its discussions. A new feature this year is hosting the Cornwallis Group’s annual workshop within ISMOR. The Cornwallis Group was established 19 years ago to address problems and issues related to international peace and stability in the new environment following the end of the Cold War. The European Forum for Restorative Justice is offering, during June, an amazing range of workshops, as well as the distinguished plenary speakers (including John Braithwaite, Shadd Maruna, Joanna Shapland). There are 5 workshop sessions, each with a choice of 10 or 11 papers, dialogues or trainings, on theory and practice from the UK, Western and Eastern Europe, North and South America, Australia and even Singapore and Micronesia. Also field trips to local projects, and social events. Find out more This year’s ISMOR symposium will be held at Royal Holloway, University of London, from Tuesday 29th July to Friday 1st August 2014. The venue is self-contained with all accommodation on-site, enabling delegates to complement the presentations, discussions and workshops with extended ad hoc discussion and networking. ISMOR website New Agenda Journal of Dialogue Studies Submission deadline: 11th July 2014 The Journal of Dialogue Studies is a multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed academic journal published twice a year. The Journal seeks to bring together a body of original scholarship on the theory and practice of dialogue that can be critically appraised and discussed. It aims to contribute towards establishing 'dialogue studies' as a distinct academic field (or perhaps even emerging discipline). It is hoped that this will be directly useful not only to scholars and students but also to professionals and practitioners working in different contexts at various cultural interfaces. The editors would like to call for papers relating to ‘dialogue ethics’ for the forthcoming issue. However, authors are also welcome to submit papers that address the topic of the previous issue, namely ‘critiquing dialogue theories’, or indeed any other paper that comes within the remit of the Journal as described below. All papers, regardless of their particular theme, will be considered so long as they are in line with the aims and focus of the Journal. Strong statements have been made about the causes of war, better chess players beating poorer chess players, the value of specific approaches to therapy, whether Britain is a Christian country, or David Moyes being to blame for Manchester United’s poor performance. In contrast to these strong statements the evidence suggests instead that in reality the posited relationships are weak. FInd out more One Day After Peace A film by Erez and Miri Laufer AWARD Walter Isard Award Nominations for the Walter Isard Award for the Best Dissertation in Peace Science, 2012 – 2014 are due by Sunday, June 1. The award honors the outstanding dissertation contributing to the scientific knowledge of peace and conflict completed between April 1, 2012 and March 31, 2014, and carries a value of $1000. Competition is open to students of any nationality who successfully defend a doctoral dissertation in any field on the subject of peace science, conflict behavior, international relations, or a related topic. The winner will be selected on the basis of the importance and scientific significance of the dissertation with respect to the field of peace science and its contribution to the understanding of international behavior more generally. The winner will be announced at the 2014 Peace Science meeting, which this year will be held October 10-11 in Philadelphia.
