ABOUT THE SOCIETY
The Lexington Arts and Crafts Society was founded in 1935 when a group of artists and crafts-persons met and drew
up a constitution with the objective "to foster in the community a more active interest in the arts and crafts and to
encourage higher artistic standards in the arts and handicrafts". In 1953, the Society was incorporated as a non-profit
organization. For nearly twenty years after its founding, the Society carried on its activities in members' homes and in
various public buildings in Lexington. Then, in 1953, the Society broke ground for its own building at 130 Waltham
Street. Designed by a fellow member, Marjorie Pierce, this art center was built entirely through the efforts of Society
members. The building was dedicated the next year, and the first exhibit and fair were held. Additions to the building
were constructed in 1965 and 1973.
There are four classifications of membership in the Lexington Arts and Crafts Society: Active Guild, Society
Sustaining, Junior, and Corporate. Most members are Active, producing artists and crafts-persons belonging to a guild.
Requirements for guild membership vary with each guild. Society Sustaining members who have an interest in the arts
and crafts and a desire to participate in the Society, though not a guild. Junior Members (13-18 years of age) are
interested in participating in classes and workshops. Corporate Members are corporations, companies and businesses
who wish to be supportive of the aims, goals and objectives of the Society and whose membership donations recognize
the Society as a service to the community.
The Society is currently composed of ten guilds: Basketry/Decorative Arts, Ceramics, Metalworkers,
Needle Arts, Painters, Photography, Polymer Clay/Beaders, Weavers, and Woodworkers and Sustaining
Members, who have not joined a guild.
Each guild has its own schedule of meetings, workshops, classes and seminars, as well as its own
specialized tools and equipment. Artists and crafts-persons are thus able to work in a community of artisans with
similar interests, sharing ideas and expertise. Our building has a large painter’s studio, a ceramic studio with kilns, wellequipped woodworkers and metalworkers shops, and a weaver’s room with numerous looms. The Society's Guild
Libraries contain an impressive selection of arts and crafts books which are available to members.
A variety of exciting exhibits are mounted in our Parsons Gallery year-round by our own guilds, as well as by
invited guest artists. Guild members have an opportunity to exhibit or sell their work at these gallery showings, which
are open, free of charge to the public.
Numerous classes and workshops held days, evenings and weekends, are offered to members and the
general public at reasonable fees. The public is invited to gallery receptions, which are usually held the first or second
Sunday of the month, and often include a speaker/demonstration or other activity.
Scholarships from an Art Scholarship Fund are available to graduating seniors from Lexington High School.
In addition, our Scholarship Committee provides continuing support to scholarship recipients furthering their art careers
at accredited art institutions.
The Society has an annual fundraising event in October, the Fall Fundraising Fair, and two annual sales
events, the December Holiday Marketplace and July/August Artisans Market, at which the public can purchase quality
arts and crafts.
Society Membership Year: June 1 – May 31. Annual Society Dues: Active Guild Member $160; Society
Sustaining Member $107. Guild Dues are additional. An Orientation Meeting is required prior to becoming a
member.
For more information regarding membership, please contact the Society Office at 130 Waltham Street,
Lexington, MA 02421, (781) 862-9696, [email protected].

Whether you're traveling, sitting quietly under a tree, or on a bench near a crowded café, the art of the “quick sketch” is a great way to
slow down, record an experience or practice being in the present. When you sketch what you see, your experience of it is heightened. A
sketchbook is a great journal. Using a good quality book, the combination of pen and ink and watercolor is so satisfying. Drawing in
groups is also a nice social time. I will teach different drawing techniques, quick tips for measuring, and improving perspective. When
the weather permits, we'll draw/sketch and paint outside!
About the Instructor:
Emily Passman is a painter of oils and acrylics, and is known for her expressive, loose style. Her work is in galleries throughout
New England and numerous private collections. After earning both a fine arts degree and a Master’s in Education, she had a
successful career as an educator and graphic designer. She is devoted to promoting arts in Lexington, serving on the Lexington
Council for the Arts and Lexington Open Studios. She teaches in many places including Concord Art and privately in her
barn/studio in Lexington, which is open to visitors upon request.

In this 2.5 hour workshop you’ll have fun playing with glass shapes, colors and textures while you learn the basics of glass mosaic
techniques and create a small trivet or decorate a ceramic dish. First, create or choose a simple design to transfer onto a wood or ceramic
base. Then bring this design to life by choosing precut glass pieces from a great selection; no glass cutting is necessary (your instructor can
cut glass for you if needed). Arrange and glue your pieces according to the layout. Once the glue is dry, your instructor will grout the
assembled mosaic. Your mosaic pieces will be available at the LACS office within a week following the workshop.

dishes or plates: one 4” x 4” dish and one 8” x 8” plate or bowl. Glass cutting is not necessary, as a huge selection of precut
pieces is provided, and your instructor is available to cut specific shapes if needed. Your instructor will fire your pieces in his own
kiln. They will be available at the LACS office within a week following the workshop.
The class is open to adults, teenagers, and children accompanied by a participating parent.

Dye your own Yarn- dye 2 skeins of bulky-weight superwash wool yarn by painting it with dye, set the dye in a microwave, and then take it
home to wash and dry (instructions and a wool wash and rinse will be provided). There will be a discussion of color theory and how to blend
or use colors together. Students will be able to mix their own colors, using dye already prepared by the instructor. A Materials Fee of $25
includes 2 skeins of superwash (machine-washable) bulky-weight wool yarn, a selection of dyes, foam brushes, saran wrap, rubber gloves,
a wool wash and wool rinse, and trash bags for ‘aprons’. Please note that dyeing can be messy, so wear clothing and shoes that won’t be
ruined by the addition of some dye spots.
Arm Knitting–Take the yarn you’ve dyed and arm-knit it into a scarf, or bring 2 skeins of your own bulky-weight yarn to arm-knit into a scarf
or cowl.
DYE YOUR OWN YARN & ARM KNITTING are independent one session classes being offered in several different timeslots.
You may sign up for one or as a pair. The same instruction will be covered in all sessions.

Rigid heddle looms produce plain weave cloth on a fun and portable loom. In four weeks, students will weave a bamboo scarf with
optional lace stripes using a variegated warp and a solid colored weft and then sew the scarf together to create an infinity scarf. The 1st
class will consist of choosing colors and winding a warp on a warping board . The 2nd class, students will thread the loom. The 3rd week
we’ll begin weaving and learn how to use a pick-up stick to create lace stripes (optional). The student will take the loom home to weave
the scarf between classes (2 weeks). The 4th class will consist of taking the scarf off the loom, sewing the edges, sewing the infinity scarf,
learning how to wash the scarf, and discussing future project ideas. Schacht Cricket Looms will be provided for students use (and can be
purchased from the instructor). These looms are small and light weight enough to be carried in a canvas tote bag provided by the
instructor.
BETH CEDERBERG GUERTIN has been a weaver for more than thirty years, and has a strong local and regional reputation for
her knowledge and support of weaving and the fiber arts. She has been involved with teaching weaving for more than thirty
years, first through her store in Arlington (The Batik and Weaving Supplier), and now through her studio in Waltham (A Place to
Weave – Individualized Weaving Instruction).

Learn how to paint in a realistic style by studying composition, paint application, color, and value. Students will work from still life objects or
photos, with special emphasis on creating a sense of light in the painting through clearly defined shapes. We will use a simplified palette to
emphasize color interaction, and encourage the mixing of secondary and tertiary colors in order to achieve harmony throughout the painting.
Instruction will be supported by demonstrations, one on one instruction and critiques.
About the Instructor:
New England artist, Colin Waddington, was born in Eastern Massachusetts. He attended the Lyme Academy College of Fine
Arts, where he studied drawing and painting from the human figure, as well as painting many landscapes outdoors within
walking or biking distance from the college grounds. During his senior year, he received an award from Lyme Academy for
two landscape oil paintings. He graduated with a BFA in Painting. Colin has consistently exhibited his work since graduating.
Colin is a member of the Lexington Arts and Crafts Society, Painters Guild.

Let’s shake things up! We all get into slumps in art, our ho hum I can do this in my sleep times, our I can’t think of a thing
to paint at times, our I’m so uninspired times. Time to make some changes. Let’s do some exercises that will turn up the
heat and inspire some creativity. This workshop will be based on ways to change the way we do things, change our color
palettes, work looser and faster, get the old blood moving. You will be amazed how just some new stimulation and
challenges can change the flow of your creative juices. Come spend two days and at just how far you can push yourself.
About the Instructor:
Seeing the beauty in everyday items is what gets Shelly Eager's creative juices flowing. She paints "Slice of Life"
paintings and sees everything through a different point of view. One of the things that makes her work so
distinguishable and recognizable is the way she pushes color and the very colors that she sees. But the one attribute
that sets her apart from the rest is her skill as an instructor. Her students say she is a very generous teacher, who
shares everything she knows on a subject. When her students leave her classes they have not only seen the
demonstration of doing a technique, but they understand the why and the how of doing it. They leave inspired and
excited about going forward in the medium.

PAINTING
About the Instructor:
Ma was born in Guangdong China and started painting and participating in art shows in China at an early age. He attended the
Qingdao Oceanographic University and earned a B.S. degree in Meteorology. In 1971 he moved to Beijing and later met his wife.
His father-in-law, General Li, befriended many artists and collected a great deal of Chinese contemporary art over the years. With
his father-in-law's blessing, Ma was able to study all of these great works and to become very close to many well-known artists in
China. After many one-man shows in China, Ma traveled to US in 1988. Upon his return to China, he exhibited for the first time his
signature style of blending the philosophy and technique of Chinese painting with western art concepts. These paintings were
inspired by western landscapes he had admired during the visit. This exhibition was held at the National Museum of Fine Arts in
Beijing, and was highly acclaimed by the art critics in China. Ma considers the brush-stroke the essence and the language of
Chinese Painting. And though ever mindful of the tradition of his training, He has found his own expression with his brush. In his
landscapes, he uses ink and gouache in many layers to give the painting texture and depth and sometimes paint on both sides of
the absorbent rice paper. He calls this technique “ Heavily-Colored Free-Hand Chinese Painting”. Inspiration for his landscapes
started in China with Huang Shan (the Yellow Mountains), the Great Wall and the Yangtze River and continue in America with the
Grand Canyon, the Pacific Coast and New England. Feel free to go to his webpage @ www.maqingxiong.com

MATERIAL LISTS
Emily Passman – Materials List
Large newsprint pad, sketchbook, vine charcoal, eraser, small mat board cut into two “L”s (makes a view finder), ruler or other
straight edge, drafting tape (low adhesive), pencils of different hardness (suggested: 2B, 4B, 2H), sandpaper block pencil sharpener
& pointer, 1 sheet of 140 LB watercolor paper (we will be folding and tearing into 6 smaller sheets for paint “sketches” so you can
do this prior, if you wish), palette (can be a paper palette, wood or glass), palette knife, canvas board, stretched canvas or canvas
paper (no smaller than about 16x20)-2 canvasses/boards, Brushes: long-handled No.4 Round, No.8 Flat, 3/8" Angular, 3/4" Flat
wash brush This would be the minimum. If you have brushes or a set, bring them please! Acrylic paints If you already have a
collection of paints, bring them. If you do not have any, then a beginner set of Liquitex tubes is fine for acrylic. (It is not necessary to
buy all new paints if you have them, unless they are old and dried out!) Suggestions for a nice variety of colors, if you do not get a
“set”, cerulean blue, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, cadmium yellow, cadmium yellow light, alizarin crimson, cadmium red, titanium
white, burnt umber, raw sienna, raw umber, cadmium orange, Paynes Grey.
Painting course materials suggested site: www.shoptheartstore.com
Paul George – Materials List
Oils list:
Palette colors - Cadmium Red Medium, Permanent Alizarin Crimson, Transparent Red Oxide (Rembrandt), Winsor Blue (green
shade), Cobalt Blue, French Ultramarine Blue, Seves Blue (Rembrandt), Cad Yellow Light, Cad Yellow Deep, Burnt Sienna
Yellow Ochre Pale, Ivory Black, Viridian green, Permalba White, Raw Umber
Canvas - I recommend painting on a stretched canvas. I use Fredrix 100% pure linen, which is a grade better then their regular
canvas. If you are new, I suggest starting with a 8x10”, 12”x16”, or 16”x 20”, but if you have more experience, larger is fine. A 9 x 12
canvas board works well for color studies.
Brushes - I use #4 #6, and #8 filberts and an occasional old round sable for detail.
Other materials - Easel, a couple of good palette knives, charcoal, odorless turpenoid, medium (liquin), cups for turpentine, etc.
rags or paper towels.
Watercolors List:
Palette colors - Aureolin yellow, Burnt Sienna, Cadmium Orange, Cadmium Red, Cadmium Yellow Pale, Cerulean Blue
Cobalt Blue, French Ultramarine Blue, Raw Sienna, Rose Madder Genuine Viridian Green, Winsor Blue (green shade), Winsor Green
(yellow shade), Quinacridone Rose, Quinacridone Gold, Quinacridone Sienna, Daniel Smith Cobalt Teal Blue
These are my palette colors. It is not necessary for you to have all the colors. I use Winsor Newton, Sennelier and Daniel
Smith paints. I do not recommend buying student grade paints. The colors in bold print are strongly recommended.
Brushes -I recommend the best brushes you can buy (Sable if possible) Try to get two flats and two rounds, a large and small of
each. Suggested: Flats 2" and 3/4” (Flats need not be sable but imitation sable) Rounds #12 and #8
Paper - I recommend any good quality name paper. (D’Arches, Winsor &Newton, Fabriano, Watman ) I suggest that you buy
sheets. Blocks are fine if you remove the paper and mount it before painting, as it tends to buckle if you leave it on the
block while you paint. I use bulldog clips to hold the paper.
Boards - Your paper will need to be attached to a solid lightweight board. Use masking tape or
clips if you like, but be sure the board is lightweight.
Photos - If your workshop is indoors, you may want to bring a photo or two of something that you would really love to paint. I
will also have photos from which to paint. We will do some paint a long from instructor photos.

Rice Paper: Big sheet 27x54 inches (regular Shuan paper, made in Anhui China is better), “ Su-Mi-E” paper book or roll are OK too. We
only use raw paper, not sized rice paper. Chinese/ Japanese ink: Liquid in bottle. Chinese/Japanese Brushes: At least need three sizes:
Small (very fine tip), Medium (Large size “orchid bamboo” brush, for most expressive strokes) Large (the size like thumb, for wash and
big strokes) Colors: Chinese painting colors (chips or tubes), watercolor and gouache. Dishes: at least need 3 (for ink and mixing color,
bigger and flat are better) Felt: Put it on table, under rice paper (blanket will be good) Container: For containing water. Supplies can

Shelly Eager- Materials List
20 x 30 sheet of foam core, 1” foam brush, scatter rug and Artist tape. Sanded paper, I love black but any mid-toned to
dark color will do. Bring at least one sheet per day if not more. If you bring white we can tone it or do an underpainting
and that alone could change your approach. Bring assorted soft and hard pastels. There will be a box of pastels
available for students, use if you don’t have many pastels. Bring some photo references to paint from. Try to bring
something that really turns you on. Also try to bring photos that have strong dark light contrasts (this is important).
Bring a photo of a painting that you love done by your favorite artists, either living or dead, famous or not. I want you to
really connect with that artist’s work.
Judith Cooper – Materials List:
Materials List: * = most important
-Spiral Bound Sketch Pad (60 lb. weight paper)-*for class work: ca. 14" x 17" [or if you like larger 18 x 24]
If you wish to get another small one to carry around with you (no smaller than 4 x 6 ; or 9 x 12 spiral bound)..it’s your choice!
-Erasers-*White plastic: Factis or Staedtler good for thorough erasing & texturing within the graphite
-Kneaded eraser good for lifting up the graphite off the surface to lighten the tone; also can be made into a thin point to lighten
details
-Graphite Pencils-a selection is always good; from light to dark: HB, *2B, *4B, *6B, 8B with a 9B woodless for rich darks!
-Pencil Sharpener, suggest getting a good one, steel rather than plastic, that has a plastic receptacle around it to hold the shavings.
-*Eye Glasses if you need them to see detail, if you already have supplies that you wish to use instead of what I suggest, that's ok too!
