Dear Friends
Now is the time to look forward to the New Year and the arrival of Spring again. As usual
Rowan has a stunning new Magazine on sale from the middle of January. New Rowan
yarns include Silkystones, a mixture of Tussah silk & Linen, Truesilk and Pure Linen, all ideal
to create the silky, light-weight and elegant summer knits that reflect a major trend this
coming year.
We are very excited to be able to give you details of two major Fashion Shows which we
are staging at the “Devon Guild of Crafsmen” in Bovey Tracey.
SASHA KAGAN, legendary designer is showing her Classic Collection at the Devon Guild
on Thursday, 10 April 2014. She has support on the evening from some of our favourite
teachers and designers, Claire Crompton, Anniken
Allis and Avril Best. Sasha remains one of Rowan’s
much-loved designers and her latest book, “The Classic
Collection” will be available to buy on the night.
MARTIN STOREY, Rowan’s foremost designer for
over 20 years and ALISON CROWTHER SMITH,
who specialises in Rowan Kidsilk Haze, are combining
again on Thursday, 6 March 2014 to showcase their
wonderful new designs. Please ring the shop to book
tickets. We expect both events to sell out very fast.
We’ll take this opportunity to draw attention to
Rowan’s free online collections of patterns from
designers such as Sarah Hatton, Martin Storey and Kim
Hargreaves. Even Kaffe Fassett’s fabulous “Homeware
Collection” of items such as throws and cushions is available free online.
Meanwhile, Joyce’s personal goal of sourcing yarn from an ever-increasing number of
countries around the world has led her to order yarn from the Faroe Islands. The beautiful
Scandinavian patterns that support their yarns are very much a major trend and will be
very popular with all our customers.
Other new yarns in the shop include Artyarns from the US. These pretty silks with glass
beads and sparkly sequins are stunning. They remain in the stockroom with our Qiviut
until we manage to get a new glass display unit made. (Or it could be that Joyce doesn’t
really want to sell them?!!)

WORKSHOPS
We have an abundance of workshops this coming term. Claire has a new selection for all
her fans who have been complaining that they love Claire but have done all her current
workshops. Now you have a completely, different range to
select from! Anniken has lots of interesting topics for you
to learn including “Norwegian Selbu” mittens. Her knitted
lace workshops all include patterns and projects.
Lace knitting is really in trend at present, especially as it is
an affordable way of knitting a luxury garment. One skein
of finely spun cashmere, silk or baby alpaca can provide
enough meterage for a beautiful lace shawl or scarf.
Sublime have introduced a wonderful new fine, supersoft
merino lace yarn (350m in each 25g ball) with a free pattern,
which is proving very popular. There are 8 different clear,
bright colourways and the supporting booklet features
simple and more complex lace patterns.
We have too many new yarns coming in for the new seasons
to be able to feature any more in this newsletter. Do come
into the shop, or have a look at the website and ask us to
show you all the new arrivals.
We are open up to (and including Christmas Eve) but are then shut until January 2014.

CLAIRE CROMPTON’S WORKSHOPS
PROFESSIONAL FINISHING TECHNIQUES WITH CLAIRE CROMPTON
It is often the finishing details that make the difference to a garment and this workshop will show you
techniques to make sure your garment has a professional finish.You will learn how easy it is to sew up all
your unfinished projects using mattress stitch.
Topics include: How to sew up various styles of garment, mattress stitch, blocking and pressing pieces,
shaping to make sewing up easier, picking up stitches, buttonholes and more.
You will need: make four identical samples of stocking stitch to measure 10cm x 10cm (4in x 4in), using a
light coloured, smooth aran or chunky yarn.
If you usually work the edge stitches differently (slipping or knitting on every row), please work them the
same as the rest of the row. Don’t press or steam any of the samples and don’t sew in the yarn ends.
Bring plenty of your yarn for knitting and sewing up. Bring along an unfinished project for help and advice..

REVERSIBLE OR DOUBLE KNITTING with CLAIRE CROMPTON
Double knitting is an intriguing technique that makes a double layered fabric which is the same on both
sides. Stocking stitch has two knit sides which means items made in double knitting always show a ‘right’
side. It is ideal for scarves and blankets because it lies flat and it also makes very cosy hats, sweaters,
mittens etc. Colour patterns such as fair isle style motifs and intarsia blocks appear with the colours
inverted on one side so items are reversible with no stranding or ‘wrong’ side showing. It is also useful for
knitting seamless tubes (glove fingers, toys etc) and socks without using double pointed or circular needles.
In the workshop, you will knit a sample of two colour double knitting to learn the basic technique. There
will be patterns to work a reversible headband, hat and scarf as well as ideas for designs for other items.
You can also bring along a double knitting pattern that you would like to try.
Topics include: choosing suitable yarns, casting on, working knit and purl stitches in double knitting, following a chart,
ideas for using double knitting.

SWEATER REFASHIONING WITH CLAIRE CROMPTON
A workshop for anyone who has knitted a garment that doesn’t quite fit; maybe it’s too loose or too
tight, too short or sleeves too long. Learn how to make it fit, by altering the length, adding waist shaping,
changing the neckline etc. Also how to alter a pattern so you knit exactly what you want. Learn how to
extend the life of a garment by refashioning it; change it from a sweater to a cardigan, add embellishments,
borders and more.
Topics include: lengthening, shortening, adding or reducing width, altering the neck, fixing mistakes, cutting the
knitting and using a sewing machine.

Crochet charts are not as daunting as they appear and are often easier to ‘read’ than written crochet
instructions. Crochet patterns from Japan, America and Europe all use the same system of symbols so even
if the instructions are in a foreign language, you can still work the patterns. In the workshop you will work
from charts and build your understanding of how to use them.
Topics include: reading charts for circular patterns, rows and whole garments, understanding symbols, using non-UK
charts.

NORWEGIAN ‘SELBU’ MITTENS WITH ANNIKEN ALLIS
Traditional Norwegian ‘Selbu’ mittens are popular with knitters around the world. Traditionally knitted in
black and white wool featuring traditional Norwegian ‘fair isle’ patterns but these mittens can be worked in
a variety of colours for a modern look.
This workshop will teach you how to knit fair isle, how to knit in the round with double pointed needle
and circular needle using the magic loop technique and how to shape your mittens. We’ll also look at other

The continental way of knitting is faster and more efficient than most English styles.You will learn how to
carry your yarn in your left hand and knit continental style, as well as the continental long-tail cast on and

Lots of the latest fashionable patterns use charts and we know that lots of you are nervous about using
them. Anniken has come to the rescue! This workshop will teach chart reading. We will go through a
variety of knitting charts including colourwork, cables, lace and knit/purl charts and discuss what the
different symbols mean, how to use chart keys/legends and how to read charts.
Participants will get lots of practice knitting from charts that are suitable for their skill level. Suitability: All levels from
novice to experienced.

ALISON CROWTHER SMITH WORKSHOPS
KNIT THE MAGICAL MOEBIUS COWL WITH ALISON CROWTHER-SMITH
Using the cast-on made famous by Cat Bordhi, Alison will show you how to knit a lovely yet simple
Moebius cowl using DK yarns and edged in Kidsilk Haze. The morning will be spent learning this cast-on
and how to establish the Moebius, which once started, is easy basic knitting and purling. Knitted in the
round using a super-long circular needle.
You will need to bring or buy 2 balls of DK (I used Rowan Baby Merino Silk DK) and 1 ball of Kidsilk Haze.
You will also need a long circular needle, 5mm gauge, that is approx 140 + cm long this is essential as we can’t knit
the Moebius on shorter needles and once it’s started, you can’t swap to another needle. Plus you will need a stitch
marker.
No advanced skills are needed. Not suitable for beginners. 6 persons only

If you have already learnt how to cast on and knit a true Moebius with Alison, this workshop will enable
you to move onto a more advanced (but still very simple) design. Using just 3 balls of Kidsilk Haze (or
similar such as Angel), we will create a colour-washed design, edged with an extravagant frill or discreet

Knits inspired by the traditions of Scandinavia and the Shetlands have always been popular and at the
moment reflect a top fashion trend.
This workshop will give you an insight into the history, the yarns and the colours that characterise this
style of knitting.
Rowan’s “Nordic Tweed” and the Rowan Magazines 52 & 54 are at the pinnacle of this design trend,
although newer books are appearing the whole time.
We will work on practice pieces based on these collections and consolidate the techniques used – chartwork,
colourwork, twisted knitting , working in the round and steeks and give you the confidence to create your own

ALTERNATIVE CAST-ONS WITH TERRI BATE
Do you use the same old cast on every time you knit? Do you even toss aside a pattern if it demands
something different? Come along and let Terri teach you some alternatives. Examples are Pinhole cast on
(to start off shawls, bags etc.) and Judy’s magic cast on (to knit socks toe up).
You will also look at the German Twisted Cast on (a variation of the long tail cast on and useful for
preventing rib from curling), Channel Island knotted cast on (a picturesque and elastic cast on which can
be used for top down socks as well as Ganseys), and provisional cast ons (where you might want to knit in
both directions, or graft the two ends together).
Terri will include several patterns for small items and it should be possible to complete at least one project on the

FELTING WORKSHOPS
COBWEB & NUNO FELTING WORKSHOPS - GERDA HATTON-ELLIS - 4 persons only
This is the opportunity to learn all the basics of making fine felt and Nuno felt (applying fleece to silk or
cotton fabric).
For this workshop it is an advantage to have some experience of felt –making. These types of felt are
particularly suitable for scarves. Although we do not have enough space to make scarves during class, this
day will provide you with enough experience and ideas to make one at home. We will make some samples
of Cobweb felt and Nuno felt.
In Nuno felting the wool fibres are felted into a piece of woven fabric.The fabric needs to be fine with an open
weave such as cheesecloth, silk chiffon or painting silk.
A range of fabrics will be available to purchase on the day, or you can bring your own (approx.15” square) that you
want to try. Fleece is also available to buy on the day using your workshop discount.

TATTING WITH MARY DE SALIS
Mary is an experienced lace-maker for over 40 years. This is the first lace workshop that we have hosted at
Spin A Yarn and we are very excited to be able to do so.
Tatting is a form of Lacework and can be traced back to the eighteenth century in this country.
It consists of double knots that make rings and chains. These in turn are joined to make motifs and edgings.
To start Tatting, you use two different colour threads so that when making the double knot, it slips along
the other colour thread in order to form the rings and chains.
You will be using a tatting shuttle, a small crochet hook, scissors and mercerised crochet cotton size 10 or 20
(wound onto a shuttle). If you have any of these materials please bring them along otherwise a small charge will be
made on the day.
