UCALGARY.CA/FRENCHCENTRE | 403.220.7226 FRENCH LANGUAGE AND CULTURE The French Language and Culture certificates provide university recognition for programs of study in French as a second language (FSL). Two certificate levels are offered. The Certificate in French Language and Culture — FSL Foundations is ideal for the beginning French learner. It can provide learners with a solid base of grammar and oral skills in order to acquire the basic skills required for communication in French. Before enrolling in this certificate, students must have completed University of Calgary Continuing Education course FRE 100 French I or its equivalent and, from there, will move through subsequent levels. Students with previous knowledge of French who would like to enrol in a level higher than French I can arrange to take a placement test. The Certificate in French Language and Culture — FSL Intermediate builds on the French language skills acquired in the Certificate in French Language and Culture — FSL Foundations, or through previous learning. These courses will continue to equip learners with a solid base of grammatical structures as well as the oral skills necessary to communicate fluently in French. FSL FOUNDATIONS REQUIRED COURSES CORE COURSES | 140 hours FRE 102 French II I 40 hours This course is designed for students who have some basic knowledge of the French language. Students should be comfortable saying basic phrases and forming simple sentences in the present tense. Conversation topics cover situations in the workplace, at the restaurant, store, airport, etc. Main grammar points include pronouns, adjectives and adverbs, and the past tense with auxiliary verbs to have and to be. Prerequisite: FRE 100 French I, or equivalent FRE 103 French III I 40 hours Continue to explore verbs in the present tense including some irregular forms, expand your knowledge of the past tense and learn to juggle with articles and pronouns, comparatives and superlatives. Vocabulary use and role-playing will ensure that your next trip to a francophone region is a success. Prerequisite: FRE 102 French II, or equivalent FRE 113 French Conversation I 20 hours FRE 104 French IV I 40 hours Conversation topics cover a large range of social situations, workplace telephone calls, descriptions of emotions and state of mind, and discussions regarding political, social and artistic topics. The main grammar points introduced are direct object pronouns, relative pronouns, future tense and negative expressions. Prerequisite: FRE 103 French III, or equivalent SUBSTITUTION COURSES In special circumstances, substitution courses, with permission from the program director, may be used. In most cases, students will be limited to one online course. Credit for immersion weekends may be granted up to two times for a total of 40 hours. FRE 112 French Immersion Weekend for Beginners I 20 hours FRE 122 Les verbes de temps en temps I 25 hours I Online FRE 123 Les pronoms de toute façon I 25 hours I Online This course focuses on pronunciation, idioms, sentence structure, oral expression and short presentations on current topics and themes of interest. Students are given plenty of opportunity to practise speaking and listening, by working in pairs and small groups in a relaxed setting. Prerequisite: FRE 103 French III, or equivalent good thinking. This level consists of the following elements: reflexive verbs, the conditional and subjunctive tenses. Conversation at this level is at a higher level of fluency and confidence. FRE 145 French VI (Français pré-avancé) I 40 hours The curriculum of this level focuses on the study of a variety of texts which will help to expand vocabulary as well as mastering the more difficult rules of grammar. FRE 111 French Immersion Weekend for Intermediate and Advanced Students I 20 hours A two-day program of linguistic adventure provides you with an informal learning environment conducive to spontaneous use of the language. Fees include bus, meals, lodging and a whole lot of fun. Deadline to register is seven days prior to the start of the course. Prerequisite: French 104 French IV, or equivalent. good thinking. UCALGARY.CA/FRENCHCENTRE | 403.220.7226 DELIVERY To assess your knowledge of French All Continuing Education certificates have been developed with part-time learners in mind. Most courses are offered in the evening at the University of Calgary main campus. Immersion weekends are held off campus. Courses are offered in classroom format and include final examinations. If you have prior knowledge of French, you may take a placement test to determine the appropriate level for you to begin. Students who begin the FSL Foundations program at a level higher than French II may be required to fulfill core requirements by taking substitution courses. TIMELINE Note: The combined total of transfer and Advanced Standing credits cannot exceed 40 hours for this certificate. The Certificate in French Language and Culture — FSL Foundations and the Certificate in French Language and Culture — FSL Intermediate are both 140-hour programs. Students who choose to take at least one course per session can complete each program in approximately one and a half years. ADMISSION You can take courses first and enrol in the certificate later; however, as programs are subject to change, we recommend you apply for admission to the certificate program as early as possible. Once you are admitted, you can be confident that you have locked in the requirements leading to your graduation. You must be a minimum of 18 years of age to be admitted to the program. Successful completion of a Grade 12 diploma and relevant work experience are recommended. If English is not your first language, please review the English language proficiency requirements at conted.ucalgary.ca/english TRANSFERABILITY Students who successfully complete the Certificate in French Language and Culture — FSL Foundations can move directly into the Certificate in French Language and Culture — FSL Intermediate. Students who successfully complete the Certificate in French Language and Culture — FSL Intermediate can move directly into the Certificate in French Language Studies provided they meet University of Calgary admission requirements. They will be granted credit for the first four courses of the certificate program. GRADING Certificates are awarded to students who achieve a minimum passing grade of C on courses that require a final examination, or Completed Requirements standing for courses that recognize attendance and in-class participation for successful completion. A degree or diploma is not required to enrol in this program. NOTE: If you have not enrolled in the certificate program, but plan on applying later, please notify your instructor of your intentions so that you are evaluated and graded in your courses. SCHOLARSHIPS Awards are given to deserving students not only for their academic achievement, but also for community involvement. Award sponsors include both corporate and private donors. PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT To apply, you must meet eligibility criteria and submission deadlines. Students in this program may be eligible for: Prior learning from other post-secondary institutions •Mary Cone Barrie Scholarship Advanced Standing may be granted for equivalent, graded courses completed at other post-secondary institutions. All courses must normally have been completed within three years of enrolment in the certificate. Credit may be granted for up to a maximum of 40 hours towards this certificate.
