IT 15 A ’ E TO CT 2 S TI M SA A M 2015 SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH Calendar of Events APRIL 08 Documentary Screening: Miss Representation 3:00p.m.; MU Pan-Afrikan Sankofa Room (Room 213) Miss Representation uncovers a glaring reality we live with every day, but fail to see. Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film exposes how mainstream media contribute to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America. Kappa Delta Sorority’s Philanthropy: Mock Rock Events All Week; April 6-10 The Alpha Kappa Chapter of Kappa Delta sorority here at Oregon State University supports the Center Against Rape and Domestic Violence (CARDV) locally, as well as Prevent Child Abuse America on a national level. Throughout the second week of April, the sorority holds events for all Greek organizations at OSU to participate in, including coin jars and participation events in the MU Quad. The week culminates on Friday, April 10, with the final song and dance competition. In 2014, Mock Rock raised over $46,000 to help these two amazing causes. APRIL 15 The Mask You Live In follows boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America’s narrow definition of masculinity. Discussion will follow the screening. *This film is presented by “Calling All Men In,” a monthly dialogue exploring ideas and beliefs about masculinity in our community. This conference will explore various underlying causes and outcomes of gender-based violence. The day will include six dynamic speakers covering various issues of violence that occur in our community and also around the world. There will also be a panel discussion featuring five different perspectives. Concluding the conference will be keynote speaker Sara Rothschild, from the Robert and Sara Rothschild Family Foundation, to speak on sexual violence in Botswana. 22 10 Documentary Screening: The Mask You Live In 5:30-7:00 p.m.; Centro Cultural César Chávez Fourth-Annual Social Justice Conference and Fourth-Biannual International Health Conference: Gender and Violence 9:30 a.m.; Snell International Forum APRIL APRIL APRIL 17 Documentary Screening: Brave Miss World 12:00 – 2:30 p.m.; International Living-Learning Center Auditorium (Room 155) Brave Miss World follows the life of Miss Israel, Linor Abargil, who was abducted, stabbed, and raped in Milan, Italy at the age of 18. She had to represent her country in the Miss World competition only six weeks later. This film explores the trauma of sexual assault through one young woman’s journey from teenage rape victim to Miss World to empowered lawyer and activist. Denim Day Wear Denim All Day! Denim Day is an international campaign triggered by an Italian court case that was overturned because the justice deemed the victim must have assisted in the removal of her jeans because they were too tight to have been removed by the assailant themselves. In order to demonstrate solidarity with this survivor and all other survivors, individuals are asked to wear jeans on this day. Take Back the Night 6:00 p.m.; MU Quad The purpose of this event is to provide a space for students, staff, faculty, and community members to demonstrate that this is a campus that does not condone sexual violence and is one that supports survivors.
