Sexual Assault Awareness Month – ACC encourages you to attend these activities
 Community Forum: Safer Campuses, Brighter Futures Thursday, April 16th, 7–8:30pm in Granum Theatre
This interactive forum will be moderated by Ashley McDowell of WBKB News. It will include a panel of
representatives from ACC, law enforcement, health care and Shelter to discuss the topic of sexual violence;
the attitudes, beliefs and behaviors that contribute to the problem and the actions that can be taken to
prevent or respond to the occurrence of sexual violence, which can include date rape or acquaintance
rape, as well as other forms of unwanted sexual conduct.
Panelists will discuss the concepts of consent and bystander intervention as well as practical advice about
what steps can be taken when sexual violence occurs. Panelists will review the rights and options which are
available to students, employees and others as well as effective ways to help those who experience sexual
violence. The Community Forum is intended to set the stage for the other presentations which follow and
open a campus/community conversation which can continue throughout the month and beyond.
 Community Film Screening: The Hunting Ground Tuesday, April 21st, 2–5pm in Granum Theatre
Across the country, colleges and universities are screening “The Hunting Ground, a documentary directed
by Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering, which details the experiences of sexual assault survivors on college
campuses. This film was shown at the Sundance Film Festival and was directed by same director who was
nominated for an Oscar for his film, “The Invisible War”, about the problem of sexual assaults in the military.
The film’s central figures are Andrea Pino and Annie Clark, two college students who experienced sexual
violence and had their complaints ignored or downplayed by campus officials. They used their experience
as a catalyst to lead a grass-roots civil rights campaign which would ultimately change the federal law as it
applies on college campuses.
Representatives from Shelter will be available to talk confidentially to anyone who may wish to discuss a
personal experience. Resources and additional information will also be available. After the screening, the
audience will be invited to stay for pizza and to continue the conversation.
 Denim Day and Candlelight Vigil Wednesday, April 29th, 8–9:00pm in the Besser Tech Courtyard
Denim Day has its roots in a 1992 Italian court case where a driving instructor convicted of raping a teenage
girl successfully defended himself on appeal by arguing that the girl’s jeans were so tight, he would not have
been able to remove them without her consent. This sparked widespread protest and the case was
eventually overturned. Today, Denim Day is an annual event in which denim is worn in support of survivors of
sexual violence. It is also an international day designed to protest attitudes which blame the victims of sexual
violence or excuse the behavior of the perpetrator.
All ACC students and employees are encouraged to wear denim on April 29. At 8:00 p.m., a gathering will
be held in the Besser Tech Courtyard to hear brief remarks and spoken word performances moderated by
Mary Thurston of WATZ and followed by a candlelight ceremony to honor survivors and conclude the
activities for the month.
