FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK
Hi Everyone
Last Friday we celebrated Mother’s Day with the sale of gifts at our Mother’s Day Stall and this year sent a flower
home with each student for mum. These events take a massive amount of time and co-ordination and we certainly
could not have achieved this without the tremendous support from parents and staff working together.
I thank our main organisers; Amanda Woodhouse, Melynda Morley, Michelle Wrigley and Liz Dunmall. I also
acknowledge our parents who assisted on the day; Rebecca Francis, Annette Rajakarunc, Sara Tavete, Fiona
Schoopman, Udani Gunasekara, Jay Brown, Madashini Samarakoon, Chanelle Christiansen, Amy Doyle, Nirosha
Wedalage, Kanchana De Silva, Maree Hancock, Julie Peck, Joanne Clarke, Rita Pikos, Belinda King, Miaomio, Belinda
Knight, Nicole De Graf, Amanda Brown, Bianca Stoll, Louise Mete and Theresa Tischler. A special mention of thanks
goes out to our Special Events team of teachers for their planning and ideas.
Education Week Activities & Open Morning Session
Next week we celebrate Education Week with some exciting activities and events. The Royal Australian Navy Band
will visit on Wednesday to perform a rock concert for all students and staff and on Thursday we will be hosting an

Principal During the Day & Free Dress Fundraiser for the Nepal Earthquake Appeal & Vanuatu
Appeal following Cyclone Pam on Thursday 21st May
The school will be conducting a Free Dress by gold coin donation day in support of the recent earthquake disaster
in Nepal and Cyclone Pam disaster in Vanuatu.
In addition, a student from Year Prep-2, Year 3 & 4 and Year 5 & 6 bringing a gold coin donation will be selected to
be Principal during the Day. It’s going to be a lot of fun!
We look forward to your visit to the school during our open morning session on Thursday 21st May.
Kind regards Garry & Staff

Negotiating with children
Tips for negotiating
Start an agreement, not an argument. Phrase your requests so that your child can say ‘yes’. Your child will listen
more readily if you phrase your idea in a way that appeals to your child’s need for control and independence. If you
say, ‘Would you like to set out the plates or the spoons?’ you are more likely to get cooperation than if you say, ‘Set
the table NOW!’
Get your child involved. If it’s getting near bedtime, you might say, ‘How many minutes do you think you should
have to finish this project and get in bed on time?’ If you are discussing discipline, you might ask, ‘What do you
think would be a reasonable consequence for hitting?’ or ‘… for not doing your chores?’
Explain your point of view. You could say, ‘We have to leave the playground because I have to make dinner’. Once
you explain what’s on your mind, remain open to any response. If your child says, ‘I don't care, I’m not hungry’, you
might say, ‘But I am and so is your brother’.
Know that negotiation doesn’t mean giving in. When you negotiate to buy a new car, you’re not giving in –
you’re bargaining. Keep in mind that negotiating is not about winning and losing.
Negotiate issues in age-appropriate ways. If your school-age child doesn’t like peas, you might ask, ‘What
vegetable would you like instead?’ If your preschooler is not interested in eating at all, instead of arguing, you
might consider playfully cutting a sandwich into interesting shapes to make it more appealing.
Respond to criticism with a reasonable question. If your child tells you to stop nagging about cleaning the
bedroom or have a bath, you might say, ‘How would you manage this yourself? When would you like to do it?’
Take time to cool down. If your child is making you angry or just plain crazy, go into the other room and calm
down before trying to talk. Scott Brown, author of How to negotiate with kids even when you think you shouldn’t,
suggests that you think about whether an emotional response from you will ease the conflict or dig a deeper hole.
Write down solutions. Writing notes to an older child, such as, ‘Clean room at 5 pm’, might prompt more
cooperation than nagging would.
Let your child win sometimes. Pick your battles wisely and remember that changing your mind does not mean
you’re losing. You might say, ‘OK, I agree with you. But let’s make a deal that next time you will listen to me before
blowing up’.
Remember, you have the final say. You don’t have to reach consensus in any negotiation. Sometimes, somebody
just has to make a decision. ‘It’s perfectly OK for parents to make the final decision, as long as they have heard their
children’s point of view and tried to be fair’, says Brown. ‘Children will come to respect that; they may not like it,
but they will come to realise that it’s fair.’

House Points and Rubbish Free lunch
So far this term CEPS have been rewarding many students with
house points for bringing rubbish free lunch boxes to school on
Tuesdays. Waste-free lunches benefit the environment by
reducing packaging waste, which in turn reduces energy and
resource use. Waste-free lunches tend to result in reduced litter
around our school and they encourage healthy eating. Often,
highly processed foods are packaged while unprocessed snacks,
such as fruit and vegetables, are not.
Rubbish Free Lunchbox tips:
·
Instead of putting your child's sandwich in disposable cling
wrap or plastic sandwich bag, place it in a snug-fitting reusable
container.
·
Instead of packing small yoghurt containers for your child,
put yoghurt in a small reusable container, filled at home from a
bulk container.

ICT News
Cyberbullying is the use of technology to bully a person or group. Bullying is repeated behaviour with the intent to harm
others. Behaviour may include:
+ Abusive texts and emails
+ Posting unkind or threatening messages, videos or images on social media websites
+ Imitating or excluding others online
+ Inappropriate image tagging
WHAT CAN I DO? As a parent, you can help your child and encourage them to take control of the issue.
+ Talk to them about cyberbullying before it happens. Work out strategies to address any potential issues and
reassure your child that you will be there to support them.
+ Advise your child not to reply to any messages from a bully. Often if bullies don’t receive a response they will give
up.
+ Learn how to block a bully so they are no longer able to make contact.
+ Keep a record of harassing messages in case authorities become involved. Put them somewhere your child won’t
continue to see them.
+ Contact the website administrator or use the reporting function to ask for content to be removed or to report
harassment.
+ Talk to your child’s school if cyberbullying involves another student. The school should have a policy in place to
help manage the issue.
+ Remember that if your child has been involved in cyberbullying and seems distressed or shows changes in
behaviour or mood it may be advisable to seek professional support, including through the Cybersmart Online
Helpline at cybersmart.gov.au/ report.aspx
