Hi everyone
Last Friday the teaching staff, specialist staff and integration staff participated in a professional learning day with Numeracy
consultant Michael Ymer. The teachers participated in a range of engaging activities throughout the day that can be used in
their teaching. The focus of the day’s session was Effective Strategies for the Teaching and Learning of Mathematics, with a
focus on organising learning spaces for effective learning and planning engaging, hands on tasks which cater for all levels of
student abilities and needs. Staff learnt about the importance of linking Mathematics to real world situations and teaching
the understanding behind concepts not just teaching the formula. The day was a tremendous success with all staff
commenting on the value of the hands on games and activities that were explored. The learning outcomes from the day are
being translated into learning activities for our students.

From the Welfare Officer Exercise is Everywhere
For active children in good health, a structured fitness program isn't needed. These children are constantly on the
move and their flexible, young bodies equip them to participate in physical activities. Play, for children, is exercise.
When a child plays they develop dexterity, motor skills and muscle strength. Physically, they also develop strength,
agility, coordination, stamina, spatial awareness and fitness as they practice and extend their movement skills
according to their stage of development.
The benefits of exercising - Regular exercise helps develop muscles and strengthen bones. Body fat is less in a
child who is moderately active and the likelihood of becoming overweight is also lessened, as is the likelihood of
developing type 2 Diabetes. Children who are physically fit tend to sleep better. Fitness aids concentration, and
regular muscular exercise helps to lessen stress and tension. As with all types of play, physical exercise and fitness
also increases stamina, endurance, flexibility and strength.
Aerobic exercise is particularly good for developing endurance. Regular aerobic activity can include cycling,
walking, running or jogging, swimming, or sports such as basketball, football or soccer. During aerobic exercise, the
heart rate increases and breathing becomes more labored. Over time, aerobic exercise will strengthen the heart
and the body's ability to provide oxygen to the cells. Flexibility can be improved by stretching and for most
children, stretching is a natural part of their overall movement in reaching for things or simply bending down to
pick something up.
Strength is something children also tend to achieve naturally if they have regular opportunities to play on
equipment, particularly climbing ropes or monkey bars.
How much is too much? - Regardless of age, any exercise that is enjoyable and doesn't cause distress, pain or
other physical discomfort, can be undertaken at any time.
Ideally, children above the age of two, benefit most from at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise (such
as running, jumping, skipping, hopping, walking) over the course of a day, every day of the week.
As opposed to some adults, young children are mostly not as driven by the desire to maintain a certain level of
fitness, or lose weight to look good. Children naturally take part in all sorts of play that involves activity. The onset
of tiredness or in some cases simple boredom usually ensures that a child will stop the activity and look for
something else to do.
Young children are more likely to be active if their family–including parents or carers–are active. However, for
children who prefer to spend a great deal of time in front of a computer or television screen, encouraging them to
play outside may require the parent to set limits on screen time, and provide alternative activities.
Over-exercising can lead to weight loss, hormonal imbalance (especially in girls) and cause injuries, especially
when parts of the body are over-used. If the amount of time a child is exercising or playing sport is beginning to
intrude on normal activities, this may be the sign to rethink the exercise commitment.
Always stop any activity if a child complains of pain, dizziness, or feels sick or excessively tired.
Competitive sport - Once a child begins school, a certain amount of exercise is a requirement as competitive
sports and activities are part of the curriculum. Most active children enjoy being part of a team, and teamwork
helps them to learn how to take turns, win, lose, and how to support a teammate. Being part of a team also
encourages friendships, commitment, and feelings of belonging.
Young children are not always interested in rules and are prone to make up their own or change them to suit
themselves. A young child may not have a problem with breaking the rules if it means that this helps them to win.
By eight or nine years of age, children understand the concept of competitive sport. They can follow rules and
comprehend what competition is all about. Stretches, warm up exercises prior to, and warm down exercises after
exertion, help to prevent muscle strain and soreness. Also, ensure that your child has any protective gear that is
required for their chosen sport.
Ideas for activities
 Enjoy physical activity as a family. Take a walk, throw a ball in the park, cycle together, or run around the
back yard with the dog.
 Encourage children to help in the garden–digging, raking, or collecting leaves.
 Limit screen time and provide an outdoor activity, especially when children may be bored or have been
inside for too long.
 Don't let wet weather put you off–a walk in the rain can be fun.
 Enroll your child in an activity of their choice (cricket, swimming, ballet, athletics) and where possible take
time out to stay to watch and support their efforts.
 Plan picnics or days out, and along with the food, pack a cricket bat, bikes or bathers/swimmers if there's a
park, pool or beach nearby.
Riding to and from school: A reminder message - Children need to take care when riding their bikes and
scooters to and from school. Parents please remind your children to stick to the footpaths and be aware of traffic
and pedestrians while riding. Wear a helmet at all times and avoid using ear devices.

Cross Country
Congratulations to all the students who ran in our school cross-country on Monday 20th April. It was great
to see so many of you dressed in your house colors and doing your best to earn points for your house. There
were some fantastic individual efforts by students on the day who ran extremely well. Well-done and good
luck to the students who made the team to represent CEPS at the District Cross Country on Friday. Thank
you to all the parents who came out and supported the students on the day. You really help to create a great
atmosphere. Thank you also to all the staff for their help and support on the day. Dale Carey and Glenn Shaw
