• It’s illegal to put used oil in landfills, down storm
drains or sewers, on the ground, or in the surface
waters of Washington.
• The Washington Department of Ecology
estimates that 52 million pounds of toxic
chemicals enter Puget Sound from stormwater
runoff each year. This includes oil and petroleum
products leaked from vehicles.
Other wastes?
Recycle your used oil at one of the sites listed inside.
Oil filters, car batteries, contaminated motor oil,
antifreeze/coolants, and other automotive wastes
are accepted at HazoHouse.

energy and non-renewable petroleum resources.
• One gallon of used oil is enough to contaminate
1 million gallons of water.

vehicle if you have leaks or are doing engine
work.
• Clean up spills as quickly as possible.
• Take your used motor oil to HazoHouse or one of
the other collection sites throughout the county.

1. Drain the used oil into a sealable, reusable
container. A clean milk or laundry detergent jug will
work, or try a reusable drain pan available at many
auto stores.
2. Keep the oil pure. Keep the container sealed
from rain water and debris. When mixed with toxic
substances like solvents, gasoline, thinners or
antifreeze, used oil becomes hazardous waste.
3. Call 1-800-RECYCLE (Mon to Fri — 9 am to 1 pm)
or locate collection sites online at:
http://1800recycle.wa.gov or www.co.thurston.
wa.us/health/ehhw/usedoilsites.html.
4. Take the used oil to a collection site. To reduce
waste, keep the oil container to use again.
