WALLER WEEKLY NEWS - Chris Waller Racing

Waller weekly news
27 march, 2015
Permit
This week our four winners were headlined by our ‘stable pet’ Permit recording his fifth success at stakes level. Quite the character
and not one to ‘work the house down at home’ come race-day when he’s hot he’s hot and when he’s not, well, he’s not which can
leave punters rueing but as we often say, they’re not machines and although we pride ourselves on our systematic approach to
training, there are some things we can’t control. We also celebrated another talented 2yo filly winning on debut following on from
Always Allison and Pioneering, this time the Kepitis family’s Labdien. Silverball is also an exciting horse going forward after winning
at the same Warwick Farm meeting while Disgraceful is far from it in our book as he’s a pleasure to have around and broke his
maiden at Kembla on Saturday. While we always mention the winners each week, there are always plenty of horses that run close
and are worthy of mentions, this week two 3yo colts in Preferment and Kermadec added to their stellar race-records with Group 1
placings and they look set for bigger honours in their next race-day appearances.
Our home-track Rosehill is again set to stage another nail-biting day of quality racing tomorrow plus we have runners at
Mornington and Newcastle - Chris and Liam have plenty of useful insights into our runners on the video preview - head to the
website: www.cwallerracing.com to view it.
We wish you all the very best of luck over the next week!

CHRIS WALLER RACING - WINNERS THIS WEEK
PERMIT
8yo G Dansili – Cochin by Swain
Having not won since last January and having been a
wonderful member of the team since 2011, the up for
retirement Permit must have decided he preferred the
high-octane racehorse feed rather than the low GI rations
the more sedentary equines eat and produced a great staying
performance to win the Group 3 Manion Cup at Rosehill
on Saturday. Ridden by Tommy Berry, he was challenged in
the straight but fought on gamely with almost a length in
hand on the line. Now with a bit of swagger back in his step
around the stable knowing he’s still got it in him, Permit has
staved off hanging up his race plates for a little longer and
may contest the Chairman’s Handicap on the first day of
The Championships, a race he won back in 2012 after also
winning the Manion Cup.
LABDIEN
2yo F Stryker – Bold Moment by Fasliyev
Labdien produced a very good effort to win on debut for
the Kepitis family’s Woppitt Bloodstock. With Tommy
Berry on board she settled last in the six horse field and
was angled wide on the turn before knuckling down and
running on well in the straight for a narrow but very
rewarding victory. With plenty more maturing to be done,
Labdien is now spelling as we eagerly await working with
a stronger version of this talented filly when she returns to
the stable in the winter.
This was an especially rewarding win for the stable having
trained her sire Stryker (Fastnet Rock) for the Ingham
Family.
SILVERBALL
6yo G Kayhasi - Mikalia
Having begun his career in France, the well travelled
Silverball has also raced in Dubai and more recently in
Hong Kong prior to joining CWR. Having been placed
on his Australian debut at Rosehill 10 days ago, the son
of Kayhasi scored a comfortable victory over 1600m at
Warwick Farm last Wednesday. Ridden by the in form Blake
Shinn, he seemed to relish the heavy track conditions on
the day and travelled well throughout the race to score a
good confidence boosting victory. Having proved that he
can handle soft conditions underfoot, Silverball will have
plenty of options open to him in the next few months. He is
relatively lightly raced for his age having had only 18 starts
in his career and should continue to improve as he adapts to
Australian racing.
Thanks to Bradley Photographers and
Darryl Sherer for our weekly photos.

DISGRACEFUL
3yo G Redoutes Choice - They Say by Thirty Six Red
The promising Disgraceful broke through for his maiden
success over the 1400m course at Kembla Grange on Saturday.
Having been placed twice previously from just three starts he
made no mistake on Saturday winning comfortably. Racing in
the colours of owner John Singleton’s Strawberry Hill Stud,
the gelding was smartly away under Jeff Penza who controlled
the race from start to finish. He never saw another rival and
raced away in the straight for a comprehensive victory. He
should gain plenty of confidence from this initial success and
be ready to carry on his winning way now.
CAPTION COMPETITION
We love people who can have a laugh at themselves and
we had to chuckle too when Paul Kepitis told us to check
this photo of him gazing up at Liam quite admirably on
the Bradley Photos website after Winx’s recent win. Paul’s
suggestion that we start a weekly photo competition
has now got wings and thanks to Prestige Hire Cars, the
best caption as judged by the office girls will get a $100
voucher and a CWR prize. Email your submission to
[email protected] by COB Wednesday 1 April.
If anyone would like to offer up a prize an have their
business featured in the newsletter alongisde this, let
Haylie know too!
Fillies could give Chris Waller his first
autumn group 1 in Vinery Stud Stakes
It has been a case of being around the mark for Chris
Waller in the Sydney group 1s this autumn without
snaring a winner. That will change in the next couple
of weeks as the grand final of the Championships
draws closer, but the BMW and Vinery Stud present
the premier trainer with a great opportunity to kick
off his top level tally at Rosehill on Saturday.
Waller has gone to another level again, already
winning nine group 1s for the season. However, he
has so far had to have been happy with placings in the
nine group 1 autumn races in Sydney.
He didn't have starters in two of the group 1s, but
he has had runners-up in Catkins and Perferment,
which was brave in Saturday's Rosehill Guineas,
another two thirds and two fourths.
Winx
Waller has a strong class of three-year-old fillies and they get their chance in the Vinery Stud Stakes. Thousand Guineas winner
Amicus, which was fourth in the Coolmore Classic last start, Winx and Ballet Suite will start in the Vinery on the way to the
Australian Oaks at Randwick on April 11.
"They get to 2000m, which is a trip that should suit them and, as we saw with Preferment on the weekend, once those staying types
get to those trip they are very comfortable," Waller said. "Amicus wasn't that far off getting another group 1 in the Coolmore and
Winx won against the boys over 1500m [in the Phar Lap Stakes] and they are both looking for the 2000m."
That pair are the established fillies from the spring but Ballet Suite, a winner of both her starts for Waller, could emerge from
midweek grade in the Vinery. "I have no doubt about her at [group 1] level over this trip and it is a step up but she can take it," he
said.
Keith Nolan Classic runner-up Wine Tales will follow the Royal Descent path to the Australian Oaks, which Waller used with success
a couple of years back and run in the Adrian Knox Stakes at Randwick.
Waller will have up to half a dozen starters in the internationally packed BMW, which will be a highlight on Saturday. Japanese star
To The World and possibly triple Melbourne Cup runner-up Red Cadeaux should line-up in the 2400m weight-for-age, which is a
unique contest on the Australian racing calendar.
Add Melbourne Cup winner
Protectionist and Hartnell, which
are both in their first preparation
for Australia stables and it turns
into a Northern Hemisphere against
Australasia battle. Who Shot Thebarman
completes the Melbourne Cup trifecta
from November and he leads the Waller
team along with Metropolitan winner
Opinion, while Beaten Up, Foreteller,
Junoob and possibly He's Your Man
could take their places.
"Who Shot Thebarman and Opinion are
aiming at the Sydney Cup but they get
to a distance that is right for them and
they have both been racing well," Waller
said. Source: Chris Roots, SMH.
Amicus
Royal Descent ready to
deliver in the Doncaster
Premier trainer Chris Waller believes Royal
Desent is on target to deliver a big pay for
a lucky owner for the day in next month’s
Doncaster Mile at Randwick.
The mare has recovered well after running into
fourth in the George Ryder Stakes last Saturday
and is on the upward spiral for her autumn goal
in the Doncaster Mile.
Her owner Gerry Harvey has offered a 10
percent share in the mighty mare, which could
deliver up to $150,000 to the winner of a
competition, which is being run by Fairfax
Media and Aushorse, the marketing arm of
Thoroughbred Breeders Australia.
“It was a good run in the Ryder - actually it was
the perfect second-up run and I think she is on a
par with where she was heading into the race last
year [when she ran second],” Waller said.
“She has the same weight as last year [in the Doncaster] and I don’t think we could have expected anymore from her in the Ryder.”
Royal Descent was fifth in the Ryder in 2014 before coming out and looking the winner in the Doncaster before being edged out by
stablemate Sacred Falls. Waller hopes the trend of going one position better will continue on April 4.
“Her sectional times were very good in the Ryder and we are very happy with her because we know she will be competitive at this
level. That is just her,” Waller said.
Royal Descent has been runner-up in all five of her starts at the Randwick 1600m, including three times in group 1s, so is due a
change of luck and Harvey hopes the owner for the day can bring that.
The prize includes a tour of Chris Waller’s stables, returned flights for two from the nearest capital city to the winner and two nights
of accommodation in a Sydney five-star hotel. The winner will give a race day hospitality package for six.
The winner of the share in Royal Descent will be decided by who comes up with the
best name for her first foal. Entry is free and can be made at ownachampion.com.au

GETTING TO KNOW Jean-Stephane DRYNSki
One of our Rosehill track-work riders, ‘JS’ was born in France and left the
family home when he was 13 to go to Afasec (which is the French racing
school located in the famous city of Chantilly).
JS picks up from here with a bit of background on himself...
I did my apprenticeship during three years with M.Christiane Head (more
than 200 horses in the yard at this time) for who I use to ride a couple of
races…. but I was too young and not patient enough so I left and I went to
England at Newmarket to ride trackwork and in a couple of races for Mr
Ernst Oertel, then I went in Deauville (France) where Mr Yves De Nicolay
gave me a couple of rides. I left there for the same reasons too ambitious
and not patient enough so I came back at Chantilly for Mr Robert Collet who was the trainer for who I was riding the most in the city. Health
problems in part caused by the very very strict diets I had to be on then
made race riding too hard for me. I left Chantilly and I went in south of the
country where I was a scuba diving teacher for a year,
Not very happy, missing friends and horses I came back to Chantilly,
worked for M.Head where I was rider and provincial head travel man.
Then rider for Mikel Delzangles during a year, then Bart and James
Cummings for nine months and during this time James was teaching
me about the very different way they train horses in Australia involving
galloping horses with time and swimming them. Finally, I started as a rider
for Mr Waller and have been here for a bit more than a year.
Nickname: JS
Best quote: I do have 3 - the 2 tattooed on my arms ‘What doesn’t kill
me makes me stronger’ and ‘Don’t dream your life, live your dreams’ and another one which is ‘Even the darkest night will end and
the sun will rise up.’
Favourite part of the job: Proving to everyone that every successful person or successful horse isn’t all the time “someone’s son”
and in this case our boss is the perfect example!!!
Favourite horse: I love them all, that’s why I’m doing this job!! But due to the fact that I have to make a decision - Romantic
Time!
Best horse ever seen: Treve. She won the Prix de Vermeille five lengths in front of our filly Orion Love, the Prix de Diane and
twice the Arc de Triomphe which is the biggest European race and I truly think that she is able to win it a third time in October…
I’ve ridden her a couple of times when I was working at CH.Head racing. She was yearling and at this time NO ONE knew that she
was going to be good as that!!!
Role model: My parents because they started from the bottom of the society with no money at all and they have ended up with lot
of money and a successful career behind them.
Favourite food: Pasta - so much that I ask myself if I am not from Italy!
Favourite jockeys: In my country Stephane Pasquier, in Australia Hugh Bowman and around the world Joao Moreira.
If you weren’t in racing, what would you have done? When I was young I wanted to be fighter pilot but at 10 years old I
already knew that I wanted to be jockey.
If you could invite two people for dinner, who would you invite? Lucie Pontoir and myself !!! I am not very sociable :)
Event in the world that you would most like to attend? None,I hate busy places .
What would you do with your last $5? Oh my god I will just do my best for never ever having to answer this question !!!
Tip for the Weekend? Foreteller should do well.
