Waller weekly news 29 May, 2015 Boban. Photo: Ross Stevenson. Winx. Boban warmed our hearts on Saturday, spearheading a week with eight winners for the stable and returning to form to add a fourth Group One to his impressive resume, not to mention the 12th for the stable this season and Chris’s 45th overall. If anyone was within their rights to crow ‘I told you so’ after the race it was Chris who was very vocal in the media last week telling those that had been loyal to the class son of Bernardini not to lose faith in him going into the Doomben 10,000. Announced this morning, Boban will now line up in the $2 million Stradbroke next week alongside stablemate Delectation. Talking of the Stradbroke is getting a bit ahead of ourselves however as tomorrow’s Doomben card promises plenty with Winx and Ballet Suite lining up in the $500,000 Gr.1 Queensland Oaks plus the stable contributing five of the seven runners in the Gr.2 Eagle Farm Cup. The team at home will be busy with plenty of charges ready to perform at Rosehill as the stable makes up for some lost time with our runners thanks to the weather earlier this month. Visiting NZ apprentice Rory Hutchings made a good start to his time riding for the stable this week, coming close to cracking his first winner on second place-getter Electrifyin’ at Canterbury with Chris commenting on the talented 20 year old “He’s a very mature young man and is similar to Jason Collett in that Jason came back a couple of times and each time he came back better.Young people always need chances and I got those when I was younger and it’s the least I can do to support some of them. They do it tough, they work hard and to have one out each year from New Zealand means the right person takes advantage of it. I’m proud to be able to give something back.” For a full list of our runners visit the website - www.cwallerracing.com. We wish you all a safe and enjoyable weekend and the very best of luck over the next week! This was a stunning return to his best form and a remarkable training performance by Chris and the team to get him back to his best. Glyn Schofield also played his part and has now been on board for all four of Boban’s victories at the highest level. He is not the easiest horse to ride but Schofield certainly seems to have the key to him. Happy with how he’s come through the race, Chris and his owners have decided to line him up next week in the Stradbroke before he is given a break with a spring campaign in mind. strawberry boy 6yo G Redoute’s Choice - Strawberry Girl by Strawberry Road The John Singleton owned gelding returned to the winner’s enclosure with a strong success over 1600m in the Lord Mayors Cup at Doomben on Saturday. Ridden by visiting Hong Kong based hoop Zac Purton, Strawberry Boy lead throughout Saturday’s event and kept all challengers at bay to score a comprehensive victory. Having been tried over further without success, Chris feels that the six year old is most effective at the mile distance or shorter. He has certainly been a great horse for his owner with Saturday’s win being his eighth victory and second at stakes level. berrimilla 6yo M Fastnet Rock - Purrfection by Tale of the Cat This honest mare has been a grand servant for the Ingham family and she scored a strong victory first up over 1400m at Randwick on Saturday. Jim Cassidy was on board and was patient early on as he settled the daughter of Fastnet Rock in sixth position in the 10-strong field. Once Cassidy asked his mount for maximum effort in the straight, she responded gamely to score a well deserved success, the stable’s 150th for the Ingham family. She will no doubt improve greatly from this fresh up run and can add more success in the next few months. She will be an exciting addition to the Ingham family’s broodmare ranks in time. Thanks to Bradley Photographers, ROSS STEVENSON and darryl sherer for our weekly photos. www.bradleyphotos.com.au CHRIS WALLER RACING - WINNERS THIS WEEK beyond thankful 5yo G Whipper - Beyond Compare by Galileo This imported galloper once again displayed his liking for soft conditions underfoot when scoring at Randwick on Saturday over 1400m. He was ridden by in form Jim Cassidy who bided his time at the rear of the field early on. Once the field straightened up the son of Whipper knuckled down strongly to score a tough victory. This was a strong victory considering, he was fresh up having not raced since scoring over 2000m at Randwick in December last year. With his liking for heavy tracks, this genuine sort should be in for a profitable winter campaign. feast for eyes 2yo C More Than Ready - St Katherine by Barathea The Mr Lai owned colt recorded his maiden victory at Canterbury on Wednesday over 1550m. Having shown promise over shorter trips, the son of More Than Ready seemed to relish the step up in distance under Jim Cassidy. The Pumper had him in front from the outset and produced a copybook front running ride to score a very easy victory. He controlled the tempo and quickened up strongly in the straight to give none of his rivals a chance. This should certainly prove to be a confidence boosting victory and hopefully this exciting prospect can now go on to fulfil his early promise with Chris contemplating a start in the Gr.1 JJ Atkins next Saturday at Doomben. liberty island 3yo G Statue of Liberty - Miduki by Snippets This promising galloper recorded his second career success from just nine starts when scoring over 1250m at Canterbury on Wednesday. Kerrin McEvoy was in the saddle and he had the son of Statue of Liberty settled near last early with a strong pace up front. Once the field turned for home McEvoy angled his mount towards the centre of the track and the pair came with a strong sustained run to claim victory by a narrow margin. He looks to be in for a solid preparation judging by this success. danz the man 3yo G Mossman - Danzavite by Danzero Having shown promise in his two previous starts, the Ingham family owned and bred gelding made no mistake at the third time of asking when scoring over 1200m at Gosford on Tuesday. The son of Mossman was ridden by Tye Angland, who gave him a patient ride in the small field. The pair were settled back second last in the five runner field before moving up to challenge in the straight. Once asked to win his race this likeable sort powered through the heavy ground for a comfortable success. marenostro 4yo G Duelled - Maybe Yes by Last Tycoon This promising galloper made a successful return to the action at Kembla yesterday over 1500m. Relishing the heavy track conditions, the son of Duelled was ridden by Hugh Bowman who always had him in a good striking position in fourth place. They moved up stylishly in the straight and went away for a dominant victory. There should be plenty more success in store throughout the winter for this lightly raced sort who clearly has a liking for softer conditions underfoot. Click on the play button to be taken to your weekly dose of Chris and Liam. you never give up on your mates “You never give up on your mates,” said an emotional Chris Waller after squeezing another win out of Boban in the group 1 Doomben 10,000 after many had given up on the five-year-old. Boban had not saluted since the Chipping Norton Stakes in March last year. “He has run into a couple of wet tracks and ran a couple of good races, but he is still a couple of lengths off his best,” Waller said. “You don’t panic with these horses because we know what he can do.You have to remember he won three group 1s in a year [the Epsom handicap, Emirates and Chipping Norton]. “He had a bleed and was sold to the States, which fell through, and we just kept him going and we weren’t too tough on him.” While Boban raced to his fourth group 1 win, favourite Our Boy Malachi was dropping out to run last. He bled from both nostrils like Boban had earlier in his career. “He was jogging up to them and was going to be in the finish and then stopped like he was shot,” jockey Tommy Berry said. Waller once again had a tear in his eye after Boban took a split between Big Money and Temple Of Boom at the 250 metres and unleashed the burst he has become famous for. But he had to earn it. “You work with these horses every day and this is the reward,” Waller said. Boban had enough in hand to beat emerging group 1 pair Charlie Boy and Generalife. “I lined up for that run because I had nowhere to go and he showed that turn of foot we know he had,” jockey Glyn Schofield said. “I have to say I have had my doubts about him but horses lose form but not talent. “On what he had done, he was the best horse in the race and he is getting back to that sort of form now.” It took Waller’s group 1 tally to 12 for the season, equalling the best mark in the past 20 years by John Hawkes in the 2002-03 season. Boban, Glyn Schofield and CWR trackwork rider Ali at Doomben on Saturday. “These horses that win you four group 1s are special and it is great to see him back doing that,” Waller said. “He is a weight-for-age horse and there is more in store for him. “The Stradbroke is there but the weights come out on Monday and he is just going to get something extra for that but who’s to say we won’t be back here.” - Brisbane Times phone call gives purton the edge on strawberry boy A few hints from father-in-law Jim Cassidy proved a godsend for Zac Purton as he returned to his old stamping ground with a rollicking front-running win on Strawberry Boy. Purton is married to Cassidy’s daughter Nicole and he revealed how he rang “the old fella’’ for some advice on how to ride the galloper owned by colourful larrikin John Singleton. Cassidy, riding in Sydney, had previously ridden Strawberry Boy including in the gelding’s last-start sixth in the Scone Cup. With Cassidy’s words ringing in his ears, former Brisbane boy Purton jetted in from Hong Kong to lead them a merry dance in the Lord Mayor’s Cup (1600m). “The stable told me to give the old fella a call so that’s what I did,’’ Purton said. “I spoke to Jimmy and he gave me his thoughts on how the horse likes to race. Strawberry Boy seems to be a pretty good horse. He ran along quick and just kept getting faster.’’ Strawberry Boy started his career with Gai Waterhouse who has had several bust-ups and make-ups with Singleton in the last few years. Chris Waller now trains the galloper and quipped it was great how Purton ‘’kept it in the family’’ thanks to his relationship with Cassidy. Waller paid tribute to Strawberry Boy who has followed the compass in plenty of different directions in the last fortnight. “He has had a pretty big journey to get to Brisbane,’’ Waller said. “He left Rosehill, went to Scone and raced, returned to Sydney and then came up to the Gold Coast and then onto Doomben. “He has certainly been well travelled in recent times but he hasn’t taken any bad effects from that. “I’m very fond of this horse because he tries hard and has to make the running himself. When he does it the right way, he is just too good for them.’’ Waller plans to leave Strawberry Boy in Queensland for the winter and pick out a suitable target. - Courier Mail brazen beau passes first test Brazen Beau took another step towards Royal Ascot this morning, pleasing Chris with a strong win in his jump out over 800m at Flemington. Craig Williams was aboard with Chris taking up our first instillation of his Royal Ascot diary from here. This morning’s jump out was a very important piece of work leading into Brazen Beau’s imminent departure on Wednesday and I wanted to use the workout as a good, solid test without hurting or flattening him, knowing that once he gets on the plane, it’s out of our control as to how he copes and recovers after the long flight to some extent. If I could put it into people terms, it’d be like getting on a plane, and flying for three or four days nonstop - some cope and some don’t. There are a lot of unknowns and some horses get travel sickness as their bodies are designed differently to ours. It’s important that we do everything we can do to make sure he comes through the flight well and at this stage I am satisfied that he’s going over there in the best possible condition. We are fortunate that he’s also got a fantastic attitude - this will hold him in good stead throughout the journey. I am looking forward to providing you with a weekly update on this exciting journey. This time next week he will have had a couple of days to settle in so hopefully we have good news to report. I am very proud to be taking a horse over to Royal Ascot to represent Australia on the world stage. I see this as an honour and taking a good horse like Brazen Beau is a privilege. With me being a New Zealander I am also taking a lot of pride in that as well and if you go back to the old Phar Lap days, if he wins it will be the Australian horse that flies the flag for Australia and if he fails, it will be the Kiwi trainer who will wear it no doubt. No matter what the result though, we will be going over there to give it our best shot and be very proud in doing so. Royal Ascot bound colts Brazen Beau and Wandjina at Flemington this morning. Waller hoping Press Statement can press group 1 claims at Rosehill Chris Waller said a fair dose of “common sense” was behind a decision to keep Press Statement in Sydney as the colt goes on trial for a start in the group 1 J.J. Atkins on Saturday week. Waller won the final two-yearold of the season in 2010 with Pressday, a half-brother to Press Statement, and had his latest boom colt entered for Canterbury on Wednesday and Doomben on Saturday before settling on an assignment closer to home. “He can run 1400 metres on his home track, Saturday is a set-weights race and he’s got the same weight as [his rivals],” said Waller, who has turned to Jim Cassidy for the mount. “It’s a bigger track and he drew a bit awkward [at Canterbury]. It just looks like common sense with good weather forecast.” Press Statement had been backed into $2.30 favouritism with Ladbrokes on Thursday evening for the Rosehill opener, displacing stablemate So Willie ($2.60), which was easy in betting. Waller already has Counterattack spearheading his J.J. Atkins team. - SMH STABLE CONNECTIONS IN MAGIC MILLIONS BROODMARE CATALOGUE Magic Millions have had a big week of selling with results for the selection of mares mentioned last week with ties to Chris Waller Racing including Rezoned selling to Coolmore for $825,000, Salford Art selling for $160,000 to part owners Francis and Christine Cook’s Mystery Downs, Champagne Cath sold for $300,000 to Magic Millions as agent, Scarletini (in foal to Animal Kingdom) sold for $80,000 to Ross Williams, Belle de Coeur sold for $260,000 to Jadeskye Racing who also paid $160,000 for Midnight Dancer in foal to Sizzling while Hidden Kisses (in foal to Zoustar) was passed in with a reserve of $200,000 as was Kermadec’s dam Hy Fuji who is in foal to Cox Plate winner Ocean Park with a reserve of $500,000.
