The Dash - Darwen Dashers

The Dash
April 2015
Editorial
I’ve just got back from a much needed break in Portugal with Cath. I was advised to go for the
sunshine benefits by the Nurse at Hand Therapy. The first few days it was bloody freezing and
chucking it down and my mood was not lifted much by texts from the kids at home reporting
glorious sunshine cracking the flags on the Costa del Darwen. Luckily the current bun finally turned
up and we had a decent time and I even – gasp – managed to get a couple of runs along the beach
in. I’m hoping to try to keep it up now that we are back.
There is some sort of big race going on down in that London in the near future. Congrats to all who
managed to get in, especially Joanne who has been given an elite start thanks to her fantastic
results. She added a brilliant first Lady at Accy 10k last month at an event which was awash with
Dashers. Well done everybody who took part and flew the Dashers flag.
Whilst we are in congratulatory mood I must make a mention of Kazza and Bazza getting spliced at
Astley Bank the other week. It was a lovely day and inevitably Dashers pretty much ruled the dance
floor in the evening. I’m sure everyone will join me in wishing the happy couple all the best for the
future.
Inside this month’s Dash is an ad for Aggies Staircase fell race. If you aren’t racing then please help
George out by volunteering to marshal. Further details on the advert. Also inside in an article by Cal
Ferguson on taking part in the Viper – a 9 hour relay race. I haven’t been getting many race reviews
or articles recently so please put digit to keyboard and send me some!
Until next month
Evening runs on the moors? It’d be rude not to.

Chairman’s chat
So this is it! Four years as chairman and I’m standing down. That makes this my
48th Chairman’s Chat and I am taking orders for leather bound ‘Chats’ if you want
to see where I have repeated myself time or maybe to just read my inane
ramblings. All the regular Dash contributors will appreciate that it can be difficult
to find something interesting to write about each month. I can finally admit that I
don’t have much to tell you about, so I’ll keep this short.
I still intend to be an active member of the club and I would like to say a genuine ‘thank you’ to all
Dashers who have supported me; it really is appreciated, friends 
We have interest in all the vacant committee posts which is a healthy sign that the enthusiasm of the
members continues. I don’t know of any posts that have attracted more than one person, but if
there are then we will take a vote at the AGM. We do not have postal votes so you need to be at the
meeting.

O Captain! My Captain!
FELL RUN CHAMPIONSHIP NEWS The fifth race of the 2015 Fell
Race championship takes place on Saturday 2nd May starting at
11:00 and is The Cake Race at Kiln Green Church, Diggle,
Saddleworth. Its difficulty category is BM. There is no pre entry so
its entry on the day at a cost of £4. The distance is a midges short
of 10 miles with 518 metres of climb. You can find the start by
placing BB4 7SW into your Sat Nav.
The sixth race of the Championship comes just ten days later with
the Mearley Clough. The actual venue is the Calf’s Head, Worston,
Nr Clitheroe and it is reported to be a superb short race. One
steep ascent and then downhill (not as steep). Wear some shoes
with some grip and when it’s over enjoy a free pasta supper. It is
on Tuesday evening 12th May starting at 19:15 with category AS.
The distance is a reasonable 3.5 miles with 380 metres of climb.
Once again there is no pre-entry so you turn up on the day with
£4.
After the first four races the tables are currently led by Stuart
Smith (Mens), and Rebecca Simms.
ROAD CHAMPIONSHIP NEWS – The eighth Road
Championship race of the season is the Bolton 10K
on Sunday May 26th. It starts and finishes at
Leverhulme Park and those who run the weekly
parkrun will be very familiar with the course. It isn’t
exactly two laps of the parkrun course, but it’s very
close, and Cruella de Hill needs negotiating twice
from the bottom. The entry fee is £10 and please be
aware that there are no entries on the day. That
caught quite a few out last year. There is a limit on
the course of 850 which should mean everyone gets
in. It starts at 10:00 and there is a fun run before the main event so it’s unlikely you will get on the
car park unless you get there very early. There is plenty of parking in the streets across from the
park. After the first seven races the tables are led by Brian Morris and Anna Capstick.
In the first six races of the Road Championship we have had 148 Dashers racing in the ebony and
gold which is an average of almost 25 per race.

Viper Series 369 – Delamere Forest – Saturday 28th March 2015
So, me, Brian and Martyn (non-Dasher, for now) set off at 5:30am on this misty Saturday morning for
a challenge of basically unknown quantity. The format was running 3.2 mile laps around Delamere
forest in Cheshire over a 9 hour period. It was broken down in to three 3 hour sectors with a
number of laps required in each. The first section, 3.0, required 5 laps, which we completed with
over 1 hour 20 minutes to spare. 6.0 was completed with over 25 minutes to spare and then section
9.0 was our major challenge.
The local radio station had a MC set up for the day to keep us all entertained and warned us that the
first few runners were coming along the final straight about 20 minutes after the gun had gone,
leaving the watching crowd surprised and amazed. Martyn asked me if I thought it would be Brian, a
firm “yeah, no doubt”, and I was right! Brian was the first runner for our team and came back in 2nd
place but it would’ve been a leading run if not for a marshalling mishap. I set off on my lap just
before 8:30am and just as the rain decided to pour down.
The trail was a little tough one. As mentioned, just over 5k per lap and a near 400 feet of climb (per
lap), it provided climb that required various twists and turns and some strong winds up at the radio
mast, along with a technical decent that weaved through trees and cut up majorly as the day went
on. There was talk in some quarters of even altering the course due to the grass and mud that was
taking a battering, but me & Brian seemed to talk the organisers round and basically stated it was all
part of the fun and added to the challenge along the way!
Various challenges throughout included managing our nutrition, managing the gaps in time between
laps both when a runner was out on the course and when we’d finished sections, especially after the
3.0 as we had nearly 2 hours to wait before we ran again. Most of these, if not all, are things that
during “normal” races you don’t really consider as you make it one blast over 5k or 10k, commonly,
and then you’re done and dusted. Both myself and Brian ended up running 6 laps by the time we
had finished 9.0 and Brian had pulled out 22 minute laps even after 6 hours of hard racing, it was
some achievement that even left the organisers in awe. I managed a couple 24 minute laps, a
couple of 25’s and my final two dropped dramatically to a high 27 and a 29.
I have done a longer write up on my blog which I’ll post on the Dashers Facebook page for anyone
on there, or, if anybody would like the link it’s below (obviously reading the print out of the Dash
won’t help you though!!) - http://calferguson.blogspot.co.uk/2015/04/the-viper-369.html

Diary of a Wimpy Runner!
Time is marching on now are there is only 6 weeks to go! 14th March saw 5 dashers taking
part in the Howarth Hobble, Amy Freeman, Alex Buckland, Neil Duerden, Chis and myself.
It was a tough 32 miles and the vegetable stew was a welcome site at the finish. We met a
couple from Preston who we ran the last 7 or 8 miles with and the brother was also doing the
Red Rose 100 for the same reasons as I am …. “Because it is on my doorstep” He lives in
Longridge. He had done some crazy events like 150 mile along canal paths!! He made us
laugh with a statement that his girlfriend calls him the “laziest Ultra Runner” bit of a
contradiction in terms I think.
22nd March was the Two Crosses 22 miles from Tottington which brought us over Entwistle
to Belmont up over Catherine’s Edge and back over to finger post and back towards
Holcombe. I saw the red flag flying on top of the moor and stupidly asked “are we heading
up there” … “Not useless you want to get shot!” was Mr Cash’s reply. I didn’t realise it was a
military shooting range did I? The Naughty Corner was a welcome sight with a shot of Rum
for Chris and a warming Sherry for me. Pilgrim’s Cross was erected in 1176 AD and it is
thought that Pilgrims rested here on their way to Whalley Abbey. Peel Tower was also a
landmark of the day and was actually open on this beautiful sunny day.
29th March was Blubberhouses 25 mile. Well …we set off with NO map NO route
description not even a postcode for the start. But Chris winged it and we got to the start with
19 minutes to spare! Most of the route was a good tracks and paths but the 8 or 9 miles
over the moors was very boggy and I’m not a lover of the mud. Again we were so lucky with
the weather and on the way back to the finish we saw not one but two beautiful rainbows.
2nd April we did our second recce of the 100 covering the section from Feniscliffe to Whalley.
We went wrong in a section over at Wilpshire and ended up in the boggiest field ever. It was
obvious that we just needed to get into the next field but no “Sherpa Cash” made us go all
the way back up the boggiest field ever and back on the correct track. I sulked for a whole 3
minutes. The evening was spent celebrating at Barry & Karen’s wedding.
8th April again another beautiful day we spent over in Yorkshire doing a section of the
Fellsman which Chris will be doing on 25th April. Chris wanted to recce a section from Fleet
Moss to Hell’s Gap and he borrowed a Garmin. But because it was so sunny we couldn’t see
the screen and had to go old school and use a map a compass.
I don’t know what the mileage was that we covered on the Fleet Moss recce but I have
recorded 150 mileage of training in the last month. Off over to Yorkshire again tomorrow to
do my longest event so far the Calderdale Hike – 37 miles. Wish me luck.

Fell race preview – The Cake Race



Sat 2nd May 2015 at 11:00
16km with 518m of climb
Kiln Green Church, Diggle, Saddleworth.
This is a lovely race! The route generally follows good
tracks, most of which are on big stone slabs. As a ‘medium’
race it is essential to carry the mandatory FRA kit but don’t
let this put you off as other Dashers will help out before
race day wherever possible.
Incidentally, the cake competition is entirely based on
appearance so you’re not going to win with granny’s
Victoria sponge recipe when faced with constructions like
this. After the race, the runners are expected to eat all the
cakes in return for a donation.
We ran this race in our 2012 championship and these were
the Dashers’ times which might give you an idea how long
you can expect to take.

Liver Hill fell race review
I didn’t take part in this race, choosing to take a few pictures instead. There was a bitter wind on the
fell tops and I took shelter while waiting for the runners to arrive. We’ve had more Dashers doing
this race in the past, but this year’s weather was particularly horrible and the conditions underfoot
were bad, so well done to all those who braved the elements.
Jonathan
Pendle fell race review
One of the reasons I like going to races is to have a good chat in the car on the way there and back.
Today I shared with Stuart and on the drive over we established that we had both had a lot of VWs
over the years. Stuart also admitted that despite being born and bred in Darwen he had never been
to Pendle which probably explained why he was bouncing around the car like an excited puppy. At
least he didn’t slobber on my windows.
I damaged my knee in the Roddlesworth Roller last month and Pendle was my first run since so I was
a bit apprehensive. With hindsight it would have been more sensible to ‘test out’ the knee with an
easy training run from home, but that would have been too sensible! Anyway, I’ve always liked
Pendle race: it’s not too far, there is friendly atmosphere and the route suits me.
Along with 290 other runners I jostled along the water board road and then up the fields towards
Pendle summit. As expected, the route then dropped down a track before the summit. My knee was
feeling OK so I gained a few places. The next steep climb was as difficult as ever and I just dug in and
followed the footsteps of the runner in front. Once at the trig point, the run was all downhill but my
knee was starting to hurt so I took my time and lost loads of places as I ungainly hopped about.
Once back at the finish I headed for the obligatory tea and cake. When I asked what cakes were on
offer, the tea-lady replied ‘Tea loaf and this very stale parkin.’ Unsurprisingly I chose the tea loaf and
was given a free piece of parkin anyway. She was right.

PARKRUN REPORT FOR MARCH 2015
Week one 7/3/15: On the weekend of the Roddlesworth
Roller, and when spring returned with temperatures in
the teens, all manner of Dashers records were smashed
when FORTY turned up at three different events,
including the graduation of the latest Newbies from the
10-week running course. Gareth Taylor completed his
20th parkrun, all of which have been at Preston. George
Thompson also ran at Preston in his sixth run of the
Championship and he qualifies. Louise Oldfield ran a
Personal Best at Keswick in 28:12 which takes 1:30
from the time she ran on the same course 38 weeks ago.
The remainder of the report refers to Bolton parkrun.
Jonny Bromilow ran the fastest time of the day in
20:15. James France ran a Personal Best when he removed 1:13 from the time he set 24 weeks ago. It was the
first time he has registered over 60% grading. He is now the all time 360 th fastest runner on the course. Stuart

Idiosyncratic race: Rumour has it that the entry is £4
or a homemade cake. Excellent tracks around the
moors with great views. Cake competition tip: make it
look like a hill and stick a doll in running kit on top.
Superb short race. One steep ascent – just image you
are climbing the stairs, but don’t look up! The descent
is not quite as steep, but shoes with some grip will be
an advantage. Free pasta supper.
Great running along the tops between a tough climb
and descent of Parlick. Free cheese and onion pie.
Climb up to Peel Tower then up again to the peak
beyond it. Drop down, then back up to the tower
again before storming down to the finish.
Proper fell race with some running on pathless
moorland. Some tough climbs and steep descents.
Challenging race around this beautiful horseshoe.
Steady climb up, some challenging rocky sections,
superb grassy descents and a tricky stream bed just
when your legs are tired. Just like all Lakeland races,
navigation is a challenge when the cloud base is low.
Bit of everything in this one. Easy tracks, rough
moorland, bogs, stream crossings and peat hags.
Tougher than it looks!
Cakes in the church hall are good. To avoid
disappointment, ask them to put your favourite under
the counter before the race.
Mostly on narrow tracks, but there is some open
moorland that can be a bit wet underfoot. What else
would you be doing on a Wednesday evening?
Narrow start so make sure you don’t get held up /
trampled on. Soon opens out on to good moorland
tracks. Expect to see a few sprint finishes on the
tarmac road to the finish line.
New race. I don’t know anything about it.
Windswept Bronte country. Bits of Pennine Way,
narrow tracks and boggy moorland. Free Curly Wurly
for each finisher.
It’s a monster and not one for the ill prepared! A great
way of finishing off the championship.

Timed road run – final standings
Great to see such massive improvements over the last three months.
Congratulations to Vladka, right, who has knocked more than nine minutes off
her time. After April’s Easter Eggstaviganza we will have the Fell timed runs
during May, June and July. Last year’s times can be found on our website

Chris’s Easter Eggstraviganza
18,700 km from Coed Y Brenin
A slightly warped picture of me running here.
It’s from the Waitarere Great Forest Run which I just completed over the weekend. The
organisers had a tent where pictures from previous runs were printed on the walls. I was
quite stoked to see that I was on one wall and rather stood out in the bright Kapiti colours.
As I was wearing the same top this year I was keen to get a picture of me in front of me.
Unfortunately it was a hot day and they took “my” wall down to let the breeze through. So I
sneaked in to unroll it and get a shot…but couldn’t get it quite flat enough.
On the topic of photo shoots that haven’t gone quite to plan. There are tonnes of things
happening to remember the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli. Being a caring supermarket,
Woolworths have put out a campaign where you can add a photo to their logo and company
“blurb” to show your respect. Such as this one they did of a handsome digger.
Well they should have seen this coming…
Plus various pictures of cats, poor Aussie sporting results and other general mocking. You
get the picture…
Kia ora!
