This historical African American institution has been a cornerstone of education in Daytona
Beach since 1904. The college was founded by Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune and is being led
today by its sixth president, Dr. Edison O. Jackson. With only $1.50 in her pocket and five little
girls, Dr. Bethune moved forward with a motto that is still heralded at the College to this day:
“Enter to learn. Depart to serve.”
The campus has now grown in the Mid-town area of Daytona Beach with an annual enrollment
of approximately 4,000 students. Bethune-Cookman University offers 37 undergraduate
programs, and five Master’s Degree programs in Transformative Leadership, Criminal Justice,
Integrated Environmental Science, Counseling Psychology, and Exceptional Student Education.
