June 27th and 28th LOON DAY 2015 is right around the corner!!!! Come out and enjoy a great decoy competition, fantastic fellowship, a lively auction, and some tasty BBQ from Fat Fellas!! Loon Day activities will begin about 10:00 am on Saturday, May 9th, 2015, with everyone assembling at the H. Curt Salter Building (Guild Headquarters), located at 1574 Harkers Island Road. Decoys that are to be entered into the decoy competition are hidden before the judging so they cannot be prejudged from a closer perspective. The first several years the decoy competition was for “loons only” but this year all types of ducks will be accepted (puddle, divers, geese, confidence), and of course, loons. The competition is a donation competition in that the decoy itself acts as the entry fee. All decoys entered become property of the Guild. For the Loon Day decoy competition, the judging will take place at the Harkers Island Bridge area with the decoys out in the water and the judges making their evaluations from the shore. Everyone is invited to come to the bridge area to see the decoys out in the water. Entries have the chance of winning a $200 first prize cash award, a $100 cash award for second place, a $50 cash award for third, or a $25 cash award for fourth place. Everyone is invited to participate, regardless of skill, as this event is to benefit the Guild. Please contact Brother Gaskill for competition rules and regulations at (252) 504-3520. After the judging takes place, and everyone returns to the H. Curt Salter Building, lunch is served (for a donation) and the winners of the decoy competition are announced. Finally, there will be a live auction of the competition decoys, including all the ribbon winners, as well as other decoys and items. The fantastic Tim Evans will be our auctioneer for this year’s event! continued, page 2 Details inside!! 2015 Decoy Festival Poster Contest In This Issue: Loon Day 1, 2 2015 Poster Contest 1,2 Raymond Earp, President This and That 3 Billy Taylor, Treasurer Rig of Six 4 Upcoming Shows 4 JP Hand Class 5 Guild Happenings 5 2015 Board of Directors Gail Corwin, Secretary Joe Fulcher, Jr. Rusty Bryan Wayne Davis Daniel Nicholson James Lewis Rodney Baker June Bryan Ken Brennan Jerry Talton Davis Springle Congratulations to Brother Gaskill, the winner of the 2015 Core Sound Decoy Festival Poster Contest!! Hand. The exhibition is a two day long event, scheduled for Saturday, June 27th and Sunday, June 28th, 2015.The class will focus on making traditional, working New Jersey style decoys. Participants will work side-by-side with Hand to build their choice of a blackhead (duck) or an oyster catcher (shorebird), with step-by-step tutelage from the master, himself. Participants should bring their favored carving tools, though some tools will be available for use. Despite his New Jersey lineage, Hand’s style and techniques have been an inspiration to carvers across the country, helping others to learn and discover refinements in their own carving style through his creative teaching technique. Hand has been the subject of feature articles in both Decoy Magazine and Hunting & Fishing Collectibles Magazine, as well as being included in Loy Harrell’s book, Decoys: Sixty Living and Outstanding North American Carvers. Cost for the two day event is $200 per participant. Payment is due upon registration, and is nonrefundable. Class size is limited. Instruction starts at 8:00am on Saturday, and 9:00am on Sunday. Saturday will be a full day of carving, with Sunday reserved for painting. Lunch will be provided for the participants both days. The Guild building will be open, and for those interested in a quick visit throughout the weekend, a selection of Hand’s decoys will be on display while the class is underway.
