Why your company should partner with JDRF
The Story behind Ace for a Cure
Ace for a Cure: Smashing Out Diabetes was founded by Monica Vesci Åkerström and Jim and Timmi Vesci in 2004. This
fundraising initiative was launched because Monica, diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 17, was concerned that the family
was not doing enough to support diabetes research. Monica pitched the idea of starting an event to her parents, Jim and Timmi
Vesci. They were on board and excited about the idea. The Vesci’s decided to go with a tennis format because of their love for
the game. They formed a small committee with family and friends, collaborated with the Germantown Cricket Club and the first
grassroots event was launched in June of 2005, with all proceeds benefiting JDRF. A few years later, Ace For A Cure: Smashing
Out Diabetes joined forces with JDRF and became a third party event with the organization. Today, managed by the original
committee and JDRF, the grass court, doubles format, round robin tennis tournament has expanded to three venues —
Germantown Cricket Club, Merion Cricket Club and Wilmington Country Club. All proceeds from the event benefit JDRF.
What is T1D?
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s
pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone people need to get
energy from food. T1D strikes both children and adults, and lasts a
lifetime. T1D has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle, and there is
nothing you can do to prevent it.
Just to survive, people with T1D must frequently test their blood
sugar and inject insulin (or continually infuse it through a pump)
every day. They must carefully balance insulin doses with eating and
other daily activities — and still run the risk of dangerous high or
low blood sugar levels. Taking insulin does not cure T1D, nor does it
prevent the possibility of the disease’s devastating effects: kidney
failure, blindness, nerve damage, heart attack, stroke, and
pregnancy complications.
Who is JDRF?
JDRF is the only global organization with a strategic research plan to
end type 1 diabetes (T1D). Our plan ensures that there will be an
ongoing stream of life-changing therapies moving from
development through to the marketplace that lessen the impact of
T1D. We want to keep people with T1D healthy and safe today until
we reach our ultimate goal of a cure and universal prevention of
T1D, and turn type one into type none.
