Vice President, Business Development _____________________________________________________________ The Opportunity The Vice President of Business Development reports to the President and CEO of JDRF Canada and as part of the senior leadership team will be responsible for the future growth and development of JDRF Canada. The Vice President will oversee a large team of community and events based fundraising staff throughout the country, through 4 direct reports, and will be responsible for their overall performance which currently represents close to 80% of the organization’s overall revenue. The Vice President has three major areas of responsibility – developing relationships in the field with staff, key JDRF families, donors, corporate partners and regional volunteer cabinets; being a leader in all areas of staff management and development throughout the field; and providing a leadership role within the JDRF organization as well as internationally among the JDRF global affiliates. The Vice President position will be focused on developing new and innovative programs and events to grow revenue while being an ambassador to staff, volunteer, donors, and their families, creating a vision that inspires all. About JDRF Canada JDRF's research mission is to discover, develop, and deliver advances that cure, better treat, and prevent type 1 diabetes (T1D). JDRF is the leading global organization focused on T1D research. Driven by passionate, grassroots volunteers connected to children, adolescents, and adults with this disease, JDRF is the largest charitable supporter of T1D research. JDRF collaborates with a wide spectrum of partners who share this goal. Guided by their vision of cure, treat, and prevent, JDRF-funded research encompasses T1D at every life-stage: stopping or slowing its progression in people who are newly diagnosed; reversing it in those who have lived with the disease for years; avoiding or reversing complications; and preventing the disease in people at risk and in future generations. JDRF Canadian Clinical Trial Network (JDRF CCTN) creates a strong clinical research network to develop and conduct leading-edge clinical trials in T1D and its complications, in order to accelerate delivery of the benefits of research advances to the community. The initiative includes over 20 networked institutions acting as CCTN clinical research partners. Globally, JDRF is funding more than 50 human clinical trials, several of which are in the advanced stages of clinical testing, leading to important advances in treatment, and ultimately the cure. Research funded by JDRF has led to many landmark advances in T1D science. The Ideal Candidate The Vice President of Business Development is a creative and innovative individual who has a track record developing revenue generating strategies that lead to revenue growth for their organization through large teams of staff and volunteers. The Vice President is skilled at both assessing and growing existing programs and activities as well as identifying new initiatives to take the place of maturing programs. A highly evolved relationship manager, the Vice President, develops successful relationships with a wide range of individuals and is able to build cohesive and well functioning teams on a national basis. The Vice President is the consummate people person who is an above average leader and manager of staff. Practiced in the art of human resource development, the Vice President understands how to mentor and coach teams, lead staff through organizational change, and recruit the best team members so they become high performing, committed staff contributors. A sales and business development professional at heart, the Vice President is comfortable in the board room pitching senior corporate leaders, providing progress reports to the organization’s board of directors, and working with senior staff and volunteer leadership to develop highly effective organizational strategies with a strong business development orientation. The ideal candidate will work well in a national, matrix type organization that has a positive, democratic approach to managing the organization and meeting the needs of the individuals and families living with T1D. Key Accountabilities Strategy & Innovation Work with senior leadership team to execute the current organization strategy. Identify new and innovative ways to grow the organization's ability to fund research. Develop the Community Outreach program to provide support for families with T1D and build these into ongoing relationships with JDRF. Give input into the brand and marketing strategy of the organization and other key organizational initiatives. _____________________________________________________________________ 2 Page Posi tion Profile JDRF Canada Revenue & Relationship Development Grow new and existing fundraising programs, putting in place performance management and measurement tools. Work with the senior leadership team and Regional Directors to steward existing national corporate sponsors and to devise ways to increase overall contribution. Build relationships with larger national partners in collaboration with the above. Work closely with major gift and corporate sponsorship staff to capitalize on all revenue development initiatives, instilling cooperation among staff nationally. Continue to develop relationships with new and existing T1D families and supporters, building programs that encourage engagement and commitment. Benchmark new and innovative fundraising programs globally and analyze which programs could best be integrated into the Canadian market. Analyze existing revenue generating activities and determine the potential for each program long term. Leadership Development Develop a strong and inspired national team between 75 and 100 staff, creating systems for training, measuring, rewarding and recognizing staff. Provide a range of tools that help staff meet their individual performance targets. Analyze and determine the right structure for the team nationally to enhance performance. Bring a creative and engaged energy to meetings with staff and volunteers to help them unlock potential ideas and new opportunities. Build leadership capacity at all levels of the organization – motivate and inspire staff to perform at their highest capacity. Bring staff together from various parts of Canada, both large and small regions, to create a cohesive and united staff with a common inspired vision. Work with staff to build highly effective national cabinets and volunteer committees to support various national initiatives. Be a statesperson for the organization, meeting and creating relationships with families, staff, volunteer, donors, and other key stakeholders. Operations Help ensure successful implementation and adoption for the new CRM system throughout Canada. Work with the senior leadership team to improve the overall processes and business systems of the organization. Develop new tools to improve fundraising programs based on new and emerging technology advances. _____________________________________________________________________ 3 Page Posi tion Profile JDRF Canada Build strong partnerships with all core business units, creating cooperative and highly effective relationships. Represent JDRF at key JDRF international meetings. Qualifications & Required Skills 10 plus years as a senior leader in the not for profit or private sector, with a specific emphasis on growing revenue and innovating new and creative initiatives that lead to increased revenue. Private sector candidates need to have a track record volunteering in leadership roles in the not for profit sector. Track record managing large teams of revenue generating staff in a national or matrix structure in which the need to influence is a key determinant of success. A seasoned leader with strong human resource skills in the areas of coaching, mentoring, recruiting, training, and performance management. Experience managing national and regional volunteer fundraising cabinets. Seasoned sales person with the ability to influence and present to the C -suite of corporate Canada. Previous event execution experience needed, ideally with both signature events and national/regional peer to peer community based fundraising activities. Highly collaborative with very strong communication skills. Detailed oriented but also a big picture thinker. Excellent skills in execution. A forward thinking individual who enjoys envisioning new revenue based programs and is committed to growth. Understands how to cultivate ideas through others. Strong analysis skills. Positive, energetic, dynamic, passionate, democratic. Assertive, creative, innovative. High degree of emotional intelligence and political acumen. Ability to look at the big picture and identify solutions. Capable user of CRM systems and other technologies. Comfortable in grassroots matrix’s organizations that require a high degree of influencing and leadership skills.
