Bus fares from San Juan del Sur to Rivas
and back are regulated at 16 Córdobas each
way in order to keep fares standard. News
reporter La Sureña Dominical says that
some bus drivers have recently been
charging 20 Córdobas to nationals and 40
Córdobas to foreigners.

Tarifas de los autobuses de San Juan del Sur
a Rivas y de regreso están regulados por 16
córdobas cada dirección con el fin de
mantener las tarifas estándar. El reportero de
Noticias La Sureña Dominical informó que
algunos conductores de autobús
recientemente han estado cobrando 20
córdobas a los nacionales y 40 córdobas a
los extranjeros.

Regional News Briefs
Maderas Drowning - On Monday the 4th of
May, members of the Nicaraguan Navy
recovered the body of an American; Kevin
Gustavson (aged 26) who had drowned at
Playa Maderas just north of San Juan del Sur
on the day before. According to witnesses,
Gustavson was trying to save his girlfriend,
Bianca Sultana (aged 33) who was being
dragged by the powerful waves of a huge
swell that had begun that day. Sultana
survived, however; Gustavson was swept
away by the strong currents. The Navy
report that his body came ashore the next day
north of Playa Maderas and was brought to
Playa Marsella for transport to the Institute
of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy.
Body of Easter Drowning Victim Found Last week, the body of Luis García Flores
aged 19 years was found floating in an area
known as El Vigía, about half a kilometer
from the dock (muelle). Luis Fernando
drowned on Sunday April 5th. He was
identified by his brothers from Managua.
Canadians Increase Stake in Nicaragua –
It was President Daniel Ortega himself who
made the announcement that the Canadian
textile manufacturing company Gildan will
be increasing their Nicaraguan workforce
from 6,500 to about 16,000. Ortega
confirmed that he had personally met with
representatives from the Canadian company
(that have been operating in Nicaragua for
over ten years) who told him that hiring will
begin in the next two months and continue
for the next year. Gildan began in San
Del Sur News
Marcos in 2004 and expanded to Rivas and
Masatepe (giving them easy access to the
Pan American Highway as well as the
availability of labor). Gildan manufactures
shirts, sport shirts, sweatshirts and
underwear.
New Court House for Rivas – The
groundwork is being completed on the new
Judicial Complex located at kilometer 106
of the Pan American Highway in Rivas
which is scheduled to be completed by
February 2016. The project, estimated at a
little over 52 million Córdobas, or about US
$2 million, will house the District Criminal
Courts, Trial Courts, Juvenile, Labor,
Family, Public Defenders Office, Public
Registry and the Local Criminal Court. The
almost 3,000 square meter (32,291 sq. ft.)
complex is being built on 1.5 manzanas of
land (2.6 acres), four kilometers north of the
city of Rivas. The project will allow for
growth in the department of Rivas and will
provide a better environment for all that use
or work in the facility.
Granada goes after Illegal
Accommodations – Businesses in the City
of Granada have demanded that the
authorities enforce the rules on locations
renting rooms without having been
inspected or registered. Those businesses
complaining say that they struggle to stay
solvent with high operating costs yet the
illegal places have no extra costs. They
suggested that some rooms go for as little as
five or ten dollars and up to $25 with spaces
to cook and deprive the bona fide hostel and
restaurants of income. Businesses want the

Municipal Council of Granada as well as
INTUR (the Tourism Institute) to excessive

Rivas, a Center of Commerce – Businesses
providing; hardware, clothing, footwear and
cosmetics have become an important part of
the economy of the City of Rivas and
provide the local authorities with a large
portion of the taxes they collect. There are
almost 482 establishments (considered
small, medium and large) and according to
INSS (Social Security) statistics, they
created 1,243 new formal jobs in 2014
although traders argue that the figure is now
higher as it does not include casual workers.
Every day, between 8,000 and 12,000
people fill the streets of Rivas and millions
of Córdobas change hands.

Víctima por ahogamiento en Pascua es
encontrado - La semana pasada, el cuerpo
de Luis García Flores de 19 años de edad fue
encontrado flotando en una zona conocida
como El Vigía, a medio kilómetro del muelle
(muelle). Luis Fernando se ahogó el
domingo 5 de abril. Fue identificado por sus
hermanos de Managua.
Canadienses elevan participación en
Nicaragua - Fue el propio presidente Daniel
Ortega quien hizo el anuncio de que la
empresa de fabricación textil canadiense
Gildan está en aumento de su fuerza de
trabajo nicaragüense de 6.500 a alrededor de
16.000. Ortega confirmó que se había
reunido personalmente con representantes
de la empresa canadiense (que han estado
operando en Nicaragua por más de diez
años) y dijeron que la contratación se
iniciará en los próximos dos meses y
continuará durante el próximo año. Gildan
comenzó en San Marcos en 2004 y se
expandió a Rivas y Masatepe (dado el fácil
acceso a la carretera Panamericana, así como
la disponibilidad de mano de obra). Gildan
fabrica camisas, camisas deportivas,
camisetas y ropa interior.

Ahogado en Maderas - El lunes 4 de mayo,
miembros de la Fuerza Naval de Nicaragua
recuperaron el cuerpo de un estadounidense;
Kevin Gustavson (26 años) que se había
ahogado en Playa Maderas justo al norte de
San Juan del Sur en el día anterior. Según los
testigos, Gustavson estaba tratando de salvar
a su novia, Bianca Sultana (33 años) que
estaba siendo arrastrada por las poderosas
olas de un gran oleaje que había comenzado
ese día. Sultana sobrevivió, sin embargo;
Gustavson fue arrastrado por las fuertes
corrientes. La Armada informa que su
cuerpo llegó a tierra al día siguiente al norte
de la Playa Madera y fue llevado a Playa
Marsella para transportarlo a Instituto de
Medicina Forense para la autopsia.

PANAMA, EL SALVADOR, COSTA RICA,
Nueva Palacio de Justicia de Rivas - El
trabajo de base se está terminando en el
nuevo Complejo Judicial ubicado en el
kilómetro 106 de la Carretera Panamericana
en Rivas el cual está programado para ser
completado en febrero de 2016. El proyecto,
que se estima en poco más de 52 millones de
córdobas, o alrededor de US $ 2 millones,
albergará los Juzgados de Distrito Penal,
Juzgados de Instrucción, de Menores,
Trabajo, Familia, Defensoría Pública,
Registro Público y la Corte Penal local. La
construcción de casi 3.000 metros
cuadrados del complejo se está
construyendo en 1.5 manzanas de tierra (2,6
acres), cuatro kilómetros al norte de la
ciudad de Rivas. El proyecto permitirá el
crecimiento en el departamento de Rivas y
proporcionará un ambiente mejor para todos
en el uso o el trabajo en la instalación.
Granada va tras Alojamiento Ilegales Los negocios en la ciudad de Granada han
exigido que las autoridades hagan cumplir
las normas relativas a los lugares que
alquilan habitaciones sin haber sido
inspeccionado o registrado. Esas empresas

Police Improve Public Security – The
National Police will be improving the
protection of citizens in public places such
as markets, schools, bus stops and parks.
Officials say that the plan is based around
dealing with four key points; the sale of
drugs on the street, protecting at risk youths,
family issues and street crimes. The head of
the National Police; Aminta Granera
indicated that this was in response to the
demands of the population from citizen
meetings and surveys around the country. To
prevent crime in schools, the police will
create a security committee who will work
with the chief of the local sector as well as
parents, families, teachers and students. The
aim is to establish a perimeter around each
school of between 100 to 300 meters and
work within that zone to control or eliminate
the problem areas of drugs and liquor as well
as other dangers to children. President
Daniel Ortega welcomed the plan and said
that Nicaragua is a natural place for
investment because of its safety and security
record. He confirmed that security continues
to be a priority for Nicaragua and that the
Government is "Interested in Nicaraguan
and foreign investors and is ensuring a
secure environment for them”.
Real Estate Market in CA – The Central
American estate market is showing
improvement according to Melizandro
Quiros (Economist and Real Estate
Consultant) and Nicaragua is riding that
wave due to the economic progress that the
country has made in the last few years.
“Nicaragua is now out of the period of
lethargy and has begun to take off as foreign
investors are attracted by the lower land and
construction costs” said Quiros. In San Juan
del Sur, a recent increase in projects
breaking ground support his theory that
“Overall, there are positive signs that the
country is creating the
conditions for a boost in
real estate”.

warning that the swell

in the Pacific would

Sunday throughout the Pacific Coast from
Mexico to Chile. In Nicaragua Corinto
seemed worse hit with 20 families had to be
removed to temporary shelters. Three
ranchos on the beach at Poneloya (20
kilometers west of the City of Leon), were
swept away by the high tides on Sunday
afternoon. Floods were reported by
businesses in La Bocana and on the LeonPoneloya road. SINAPRED, the National
System for Prevention, Mitigation and
Attention to Disasters recommended that
visitors do not enter the water and stopped
fishing activities for 72 hours.
INSS Signs Up More Workers – It's the
deduction that employees and employers
have a “love/hate” relationship with,
however; the government is pushing for
more employees to be signed up and in
January and February of this year added
almost 19,000 new workers to ranks of the
“formally employed”. The Nicaraguan
Institute of Social Security (INSS) now
claims a total of about 744,822 members.
Some say that figure is only about 20% of
the total population that is deemed to be
eligible for work by age.
Huembes Fire – A fire broke last Sunday in
the hardware zone at the Roberto Huembes
market in Managua (next to the bus terminal
of the same name which is the termination
point for buses from San Juan del Sur).
Reports say that the fire affected four
hardware stores and lose could be as much
as US60,000. Witnesses say the fire could
have been caused by a short circuit from a
person using a welder in the vicinity of
where the fire started. The Volunteer Fire
Brigade struggled with flammable materials
stored in the businesses. In addition, only
one fire hydrant was working and that was
60 meters from the fire.
Health Tips for Rainy Season - The
Ministry of Health is talking about
preventive measures to be taken as the rainy
season (winter) approaches. They pointed
out that every year; the first rains produce an
increase in cases of diarrhea, chikungunya,
leptospirosis, dengue and respiratory
diseases. They warned of the need to destroy
breeding sites for mosquito's especially old
containers that harbor larvae. Rain and high
temperatures cause the female mosquito
population to grow and in turn transmit
dengue and chikungunya. The MOH asks
the population to adopt an attitude of shared
responsibility by each family member. The
simple act of proper hand washing can
reduce the cases of respiratory and diarrheal
diseases by 40%. Often these diseases ae
transmitted by a lack of hygiene.

Policía mejora la seguridad pública - La
Policía Nacional mejora la protección de los
ciudadanos en lugares públicos como
mercados, escuelas, paradas de autobús y
parques. Las autoridades dicen que el plan se
basa en tratar con cuatro puntos clave; la
venta de drogas en la calle, proteger a los
jóvenes en riesgo, problemas familiares y los
crímenes callejeros. La jefe de la Policía
Nacional; Aminta Granera indicó que esto
fue en respuesta a las demandas de la
población de las reuniones ciudadanas y
encuestas en todo el país. Para prevenir la
delincuencia en las escuelas, la policía va a
crear un comité de seguridad que trabajará
con el jefe del sector local, así como con los
padres, las familias, los profesores y los
estudiantes. El objetivo es establecer un
perímetro alrededor de cada escuela de entre
100 a 300 metros y trabajar dentro de esa
zona para controlar o eliminar las áreas con
problemas de drogas y licor, así como otros

Mercado de Bienes Raíces en CA - El
mercado inmobiliario de Centroamérica está
mostrando mejoría según Melizandro
Quiroz (Economista y consultor
inmobiliario) y Nicaragua está montando la
ola debido al progreso económico que el país
ha hecho en los últimos años. "Nicaragua
está ahora fuera del período de letargo y ha
comenzado a despegar ya que los inversores
extranjeros se sienten atraídos por los bajos
costos de la tierra y de la construcción", dijo
Quirós. En San Juan del Sur, un aumento
reciente en proyectos rompiendo suelo,
apoya su teoría de que "En general, hay
señales positivas de que el país está creando
las condiciones para un impulso en el sector
inmobiliario".
Oleaje Golpea el Pacífico – Cuando
íbamos a imprimir esta edición, el Instituto
Nicaragüense de Estudios Territoriales
(INETER) advierte que el oleaje causando
por las fuertes olas en el Pacífico continuará
para el martes cuando se empezaría a
disminuir y el miércoles (ayer) las mareas
altas y las olas podrían volver a la
normalidad. El fenómeno comenzó el
domingo a lo largo de la costa del Pacífico
desde México hasta Chile. En Corinto

Nicaragua parecía peor, 20 familias
tuvieron que ser trasladados a refugios
temporales. Tres ranchos en la playa de
Poneloya a (20 kilómetros al oeste de la
Ciudad de León), fueron arrastrados por las
mareas altas en la tarde del domingo. Las
inundaciones fueron reportadas por las
empresas en La Bocana y en la carretera
León-Poneloya. El SINAPRED, el Sistema
Nacional para la Prevención, Mitigación y
Atención de Desastres recomienda que los
visitantes no entren en el agua y se
detuvieron las actividades de pesca durante
72 horas.
INSS Contrata Más trabajadores - Es la
deducción que los empleados y los
empleadores tienen en una relación de
"amor / odio", sin embargo; el gobierno está
presionando para que más empleados
puedan ser firmados y en enero y febrero de
este año se añadió casi 19.000 trabajadores
nuevos a las filas del "empleo formal". El
Instituto Nicaragüense de Seguridad Social
(INSS) ahora afirma un total de cerca de
744.822 miembros. Algunos dicen que la

Fuego en el Huembés - Un incendio estalló
el domingo pasado en la zona de ferreterías
en el mercado Roberto Huembés en
Managua (al lado de la terminal de
autobuses del mismo nombre, que es el
punto de paradas para los autobuses de San
Juan del Sur). Los informes dicen que el
fuego afectó a cuatro ferreterías y las
pérdidas podrían ser como de US60, 000.
Testigos dicen que el fuego podría haber
sido causado por un cortocircuito de una
persona usando un soldador en las
inmediaciones de donde se inició el fuego.
El Cuerpo de Bomberos Voluntarios lucho
con materiales inflamables almacenados en
las empresas. Además, sólo un hidratante
estaba trabajando contra el incendio y
estaba a 60 metros del fuego.
Consejos de Salud para Temporada de
Lluvias - El Ministerio de Salud está
hablando acerca de las medidas preventivas
que deben tomarse en la temporada de
lluvias (invierno) que se acerca. Señalaron
que todos los años; las primeras lluvias
producen un aumento de casos de diarrea,
chikungunya, leptospirosis, dengue y
enfermedades respiratorias. Advirtieron de
la necesidad de destruir los criaderos de
zancudos especialmente contenedores
viejos de mosquitos que albergan las larvas.
La lluvia y las altas temperaturas hacen que
la población de mosquitos hembra crezca y,
a su vez la transmisión de dengue y

chikungunya. El Ministerio de Salud pide a
la población a adoptar una actitud de
responsabilidad compartida por cada
miembro de la familia. El simple acto de
lavarse bien las manos puede reducir los
casos de enfermedades respiratorias y
diarreicas en un 40%. A menudo estas
enfermedades se transmiten por la falta de
higiene.

Last Friday, on a very hot Labor Day (May 1st) in Nicaragua, we stood
under some big old shade trees in Collado (pronounced Coyado)
listening to a 'vocals only' version of the Canadian National Anthem as
about 250 local children cheered and waved their Canadian flags in
appreciation. We were there for the grand opening of the new
children's playground project that had been purchased, shipped and
erected by members of the Mary A. Tidlund Charitable Foundation in
conjunction with The Emmanuel Foundation (both from Canada). The
15 volunteers (the anthem choir!) had traveled to Nicaragua to build
the two large playgrounds; one in the village of Collado and the other
in Tortuga (Collado being about half an hour south of San Juan del Sur
and Tortuga about 15 minutes more). It was a proud day for the
Canadians and an exciting one for the children and their families who
had been patiently waiting for the completion of their playground.
The Emmanuel Foundation in partnership with The Tidlund
Charitable Foundation have built 14 playgrounds all around the world.
The Emmanuel Foundation themselves have built over 60
playgrounds and this was their first project in Nicaragua. It took about
a year from the idea stage to the grand opening for these two
playgrounds to come to fruition and started when Ron Vermeulen (a
Tidlund Foundation board member) asked fellow Canadian Brian
Goodman and American Jeanne Look from Playa el Coco (located
midway between Collado and Tortuga) to get involved and help with
the project.
Jeanne Look worked as logistics coordinator for the year and Brian set
about staking out the playgrounds and then building retaining walls
surrounding the area. He is a professional engineer and recruited local
professional contractors in each village plus volunteer help. Jeanne
enlisted the help of Mara Jacobsohn (Comunidad Connect) for
translation as well as Fernando Medina of Compras y Entregas to
facilitate with the shipping and customs clearance of the playground
equipment container. Brian enlisted the aid of Janel Espinoza to
facilitate some of the transportation needs and to line up the
professional contractor in Tortuga. Vladimir Montiel was engaged to
drive the container to Coco and to drive the volunteers for their 2 week
stay. I'm sure Jeanne's husband Marc Blatte should get an honorary
mention here too!
Other persons involved included Gerardo Toval (Community Leader
for Collado) and his counterpart in Tortuga, Enrique Cortez - Pastor
Mt. Zion Church in Collado who helped sponsor the project through
The National Association of Apostolic Churches. Numerous
volunteers at both village locations provided an invaluable service to
their communities. The women of the villages cooked lunch for the
volunteers from Canada while they were building the playgrounds.
Breakfast and dinner was prepared by locals at Play El Coco.
A hold up at Customs (Aduana) caused a delay in the playground
equipment being released and put the project back somewhat. As a
result, the playground at Tortuga was completed in record time but
unfortunately the Canadians had to leave before the grand opening last
Sunday.

The community of Collado is located 20 kilometers south of San
Juan del Sur and was founded in 1930 by Mariano Rojas, the first
settler, who with his family built the first house. Development
since then has been slow but has been positive because it has
allowed the people to remain traditional and the environment has
been maintained, explained Don José Israel Rojas Morales, the son
of the village founder and Political Secretary of the Community.
José added “The electrical power was installed a year ago. We have
a home we use as a base where we hold meetings and where the
population receives medical care once a month. We also us it for
Christian meetings. Most of the inhabitants belong to the Mount
Zion Apostolic Church. The playground is the latest advance for
the community which was built on land donated by Mr. Cándido
Cortez”.
Gerardo Toval, Community Leader said "The people of Collado
worked together with Canadians to install the playground and we
are grateful for this contribution to our children.”
Alba Adilia López Guzmán, a resident of Collado said "The arrival
of the playground brings great joy to the children and support for
their development. The parents are happy if our children are
happy.”
Professor Marvin Toval Calderón explained "The playground
benefits the children in emotional and physical development. To
play is a fundamental right of children.”
Pastor Enrique Cortez gave special thanks to Jeanne “Juanita”

Con Corazones Brillantes
El viernes pasado, en un muy caliente Día del
Trabajo nicaragüense (1 de mayo) nos paramos
en algunos grandes árboles viejos de sombra en
Collado (pronunciado Coyado) escuchamos una
versión de "voz única" del Himno Nacional de
Canadá, cerca de 250 niños de la localidad
vitoreó y agitó sus banderas canadienses en
agradecimiento. Estuvimos allí para la
inauguración del nuevo proyecto de zona de
juegos de los niños que habían sido comprados,
enviados y erigido por miembros de la
Fundación Caritativa Mary A. Tidlund en
conjunto con la Fundación Emmanuel (ambos
de Canadá). Los 15 voluntarios (en el coro del
himno) habían viajado a Nicaragua para
construir los dos grandes patios de recreo; uno
en la localidad de Collado y el otro en Tortuga
(Collado siendo alrededor de media hora al sur
de San Juan del Sur y Tortuga a unos 45 minutos
al sur). Fue un día de orgullo para los
canadienses y emocionante para los niños y sus
familias que habían estado esperando
pacientemente a la finalización de su patio de
recreo.
La Fundación Emmanuel en colaboración con
La Fundación Caritativa Tidlund ha construido
14 parques infantiles en todo el mundo. La
Fundación Emmanuel han construido más de
60 campos de juego y este fue su primer
proyecto en Nicaragua. Les tomó cerca de un
año desde la etapa de idea para la gran
inauguración de estas dos zonas de juegos para
llegar a buen término. Ron Vermeulen, miembro
del directorio de la Fundación Tidlund pidió
también al canadiense Brian Goodman y a la
americana Jeanne Look de Playa el Coco
(situado a medio camino entre Collado y
Tortuga) a involucrarse y ayudar con el
proyecto.
Jeanne Look trabajó como coordinadora de
logística para el año y Brian se puso a replantear
los campos de juego y luego la construcción de
muros de contención que rodean la zona de
juego. Él es un ingeniero profesional y reclutó a
contratistas profesionales locales en cada
pueblo además de voluntarios de ayuda. Jeanne
consiguió la ayuda de Mara Jacobsohn de
(Comunidad Connect) para la traducción, así
como a Fernando Medina de Compras y
Entregas para facilitar el envío y el despacho de
aduana del contenedor de juegos infantiles.
Brian alistó la ayuda de Janel Espinoza para
facilitar algunas de las necesidades de transporte
y para alinear el contratista profesional en
Tortuga. Vladimir Montiel fue contratado para
conducir el contenedor hacia el Coco y para
conducir a los voluntarios por su estancia de 2
semanas. Estoy seguro que Marc Blatte esposo
de Jeanne debe de recibir una mención
honorífica aquí también!
Otras personas involucradas incluyen a Gerardo Toval (Líder comunitario de Collado), y
a su homólogo en Tortuga, a Enrique Cortez - Pastor de la Iglesia Monte de Sion en
Collado quien ayudó patrocinar el proyecto a través de la Asociación Nacional de
Iglesias Apostólicas. Además, hubo numerosos voluntarios en ambas ubicaciones del
pueblo que proporcionaron un servicio inestimable a sus comunidades. Las mujeres de
las aldeas cocinaron el almuerzo para los voluntarios de Canadá, mientras que estaban
construyendo los parques infantiles. El desayuno y la cena fueron preparados por los
lugareños en El Coco.
Un atraso en aduanas (Aduana) provocó un retraso que el equipo de juegos fuera
liberado y se pospuso el proyecto de nuevo un poco. Como resultado, el equipo de juegos
en Tortuga fue completado en un tiempo récord, pero por desgracia los canadienses
tuvieron que abandonar la ciudad antes de la inauguración el pasado domingo.
Inauguración de Parque Infantil en Collado
La Comunidad de Collado, está ubicada a 20 kilómetros al sur de San Juan del Sur, fue
fundada en 1930 por Mariano Rojas, el primer poblador que junto a su familia construyo
la primer casa, el desarrollo ha llegado lento, pero ha sido positivo porque ha permitido
que la autenticidad de su gente y del medio ambiente se mantenga. Explico Don José
Israel Rojas Morales hijo del fundador y secretario político de la comunidad.
José Israel Rojas agrego; “La energía eléctrica llego hace un año, tenemos una casa base
donde hacemos reuniones, hay atención médica una vez al mes a la población y la
usamos de apoyo cuando realizamos campañas cristianas. La mayor parte de los
habitantes pertenece a la iglesia apostólica Monte de Sion, el parque infantil es el más
nuevo avance que tiene la comunidad, el que ha sido construido por la “Fundación
Canadiense Emmanuel” en el terreno que dono el señor Cándido Cortez”.
Gerardo Toval líder comunitario dice; “Los habitantes de Collado trabajamos unidos con
los canadienses para instalar el parque infantil, estamos muy agradecidos por este aporte
a nuestros niños.”
Alba Adilia López Guzmán, habitante de Collado dijo “La llegada del parque infantil es
una gran alegría para los niños y los ayuda para su desarrollo, los padres somos felices si
nuestros hijos son felices.”
El profesor Marvin Toval Calderón explico; “El parque infantil beneficia a los niños, en
su desarrollo emocional y físico, el juego es un derecho fundamental de los niños.”
El pastor Enrique Cortez “Agradeció especialmente a Jeanne “Juanita” Look y Marc
Blatte (Americanos residentes en la Comunidad el Coco), porque ellos llevaron a los
voluntarios de la fundación Emmanuel a Collado, agradecemos a los voluntarios
franceses y locales que con mucho amor instalaron con sus manos el parque infantil,
agracemos su aporte y oramos porque su labor continúe por todo el mundo.”

Hundreds of teenagers from around the country gathered at
a famous hotel in the capital to participate in the casting of
Miss Teen 2015, the event that is run by Xiomara Blandino
who was Miss Nicaragua 2007 and voted one of the 10 most
beautiful women in the world in the same year.
Cientos de adolescentes de distintas partes del país, se dieron
cita en un famoso hotel capitalino para participar en el casting
de Miss Teen 2015, el certamen que dirige Xiomara Blandino,
Miss Nicaragua 2007 y una de las 10 mujeres más bellas del
universo en ese mismo año.
The competition was first held five years ago and is now one
of the most established beauty pageants in the country.
El concurso tuvo su primera edición hace cinco años y
actualmente es uno de los certámenes de belleza más
consolidados en el país.
For the second consecutive year, San Juan del Sur has a place
in the final 16 candidates in the contest.
Jessica María Herrera Estrada (aged 16) is the Sanjuaneña to
represent the Department of Rivas in the competition.
Jessica is enthusiastic, charismatic, has great determination
and discipline and is confident that she can do well in the Miss
Teen Nicaragua 2015.
On the night of Friday May 8, the 16 beauties will have their
first test at the official presentation where they will show their
skills on the catwalk.

our representative of Rivas.
The entrance to the presentation of candidates will cost ten
dollars and there will be a free shuttle available from San Juan
del Sur to the Holiday Inn Hotel in Managua who is hosting

The authorities of Nicaragua and Costa Rica opened the new border post Las
Tablillas located in the Department of Rio San Juan on Saturday May 2nd
announced the immigration authorities of the neighboring country in the south.
The Las Tablillas border post will handle the immigration and commercial flow
and offer new options for entering and leaving the country.
The Mayor of San Carlos Johnny Gutiérrez Novoa said "This project will boost the
economy of the Department and the Municipality of San Carlos and will also give a
great boost to the economy of our country. It will allow the Fifth Region (north) and
the center of the country to save operating costs and time on transportation” said
Novoa. The mayor recalled that the opening of the new border post corresponds to
the efforts made by the central government to strengthen the economy of
Nicaraguan families and achieve Central American unity. The Santa Fe bridge
project, executed by the Government of Nicaragua was opened in August 2014
thanks to a US $30 million investment of funds from the government and people of
Japan. It is located 5 kilometers from Las Tablillas and created a new route for
ground transportation, allowing the cargo and passengers to cross the Rio San
Juan.
With the construction of the road south to the border with Costa Rica by the
Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure (MTI), exports from the central region
can easily enter Costa Rica. The new outpost built by the Government of Costa
Rica includes permanent fixtures that will benefit the surrounding communities,
such as three phase electricity service and the installation of fiber optic
telecommunications services.

Las autoridades de Nicaragua y Costa Rica inauguraron el nuevo puesto fronterizo
Las Tablillas, localizado en el departamento de Rio San Juan este sábado 2 de
mayo, según las autoridades migratorias del vecino país del sur, el puesto
fronterizo Las Tablillas agilizará el flujo migratorio y la dinamización comercial
de la población nicaragüense, además de ofrecer nuevas opciones de ingreso y
salida del territorio nacional a los habitantes de las zonas centrales y norte de
Nicaragua.
El Alcalde de San Carlos Johnny Gutiérrez Novoa dijo; “Esta es una obra que va a
dinamizar la economía del departamento y el municipio de San Carlos, también
esta obra va a dinamizar grandemente la economía de nuestro país, recordemos que
prácticamente toda la parte de la quinta región y del centro país, estarán
disminuyendo sus costos de operación, porque estarían ahorrando tiempo y
distancia en sus operaciones de traslado”, expresó, Johnny Gutiérrez Novoa. El
alcalde de San Carlos recordó que la apertura de ese nuevo puesto fronterizo
corresponde a los esfuerzos desarrollados por el Gobierno Central para fortalecer
la economía de las familias nicaragüenses y lograr la unidad centroamericana,
siendo el puente Santa Fe una de las obras de infraestructuras ejecutadas por el
Gobierno de Nicaragua de cara a lograr integrar la cultura, economía, idiosincrasia
y valores de los centroamericanos. En agosto del 2014, fue inaugurado el puente
Santa Fe, cuya inversión ascendió a los 30 millones de dólares con fondos del
Gobierno y Pueblo de Japón, ubicado a 5 kilómetros del puesto Las Tablillas y que
ha creado una nueva ruta de transporte terrestre, permitiendo el cruce de transporte
de carga y de pasajeros sobre el Río San Juan.
Con la construcción de la carretera ubicada en la costa Sur del Río San Juan hasta
concluir en la frontera con Costa Rica, por del Ministerio de Transporte e
Infraestructura (MTI), se facilita de esa manera las exportaciones de la zona central
del país, así como la entrada y salida de nicaragüenses hacia el vecino país del Sur.
El puesto fronterizo recién construido por el Gobierno de Costa Rica incluye
elementos permanentes que beneficiarán a las comunidades aledañas, como la
transición al servicio de electricidad trifásica y la instalación de fibra óptica para
los servicios de telecomunicaciones.

These two new works developed by the governments
of Nicaragua and Costa Rica has been cause for
celebration from Nicaraguans who usually go to work
on Costa Rican soil and for Costa Rican tourists who
today who will find it easier to visit Nicaragua.
Zidolena Escalante Rodríguez a money changer at the
new Las Tablillas border post highlighted the benefit it
brings him to have a new border post where they can
work with security by the presence of police and
immigration authorities. "We are protected; we do
good work and benefit Nicaraguans who come and go
to Costa Rica as well as foreigners who come to visit
Nicaragua. Both countries benefit, "said Escalante.
Meanwhile, José Sirias a Costa Rican said the new
route of entry and exit between Nicaragua and Costa
Rica makes it easier to visit his father who lives
between San Miguelito and Acoyapa and allows him
to take their children to see their grandfather more
frequently. "This way he is closer because we always
went the Peñas Blancas route but it was too long and
inconvenient and took too long. For those who live on
the other side, we have always dreamed of this route
and we are here today for the first time” said José.

Estas dos nuevas obras desarrolladas por los
gobiernos de Nicaragua y Costa Rica ha sido motivo
de celebración de parte de nicaragüenses que
acostumbran ir a trabajar a suelo tico, como por
turistas costarricenses que desde hoy tendrán más
facilidades para visitar Nicaragua.
Zidolena Escalante Rodríguez, cambista del puesto
fronterizo Las Tablillas, destacó el beneficio que le
trae a su gremio tener un nuevo puesto fronterizo
donde pueden trabajar con mucha seguridad por la
presencia de las autoridades policiales y migratorias.
“Nos sentimos protegidos, hacen buen trabajo y
beneficia a los nicaragüenses que vienen y van para
Costa Rica, a los extranjeros que vienen a visitar
Nicaragua, (ahora) el turismo se va a levantar bastante
y esperamos que todo siga adelante porque ambos
países se beneficiaran”, agregó Escalante.
Mientras tanto, el ciudadano costarricense José Sirias,
manifestó que esta nueva vía de salida y entrada entre
Nicaragua y Costa Rica facilita las visitas a su papá
que vive entre San Miguelito y Acoyapa, permitiendo
poder llevar a sus hijos a ver a su abuelo con mucha
más frecuencia. “Por esta vía es más cerca porque
siempre daba la vuelta por Peñas Blancas pero es
demasiado largo, muy incómodo y el tiempo es largo,
porque a cómo está el mundo de acelerado usted no
puede perder tanto tiempo en esos viajes tan largos,
esta vía para los que vivimos del otro lado siempre la
hemos soñado y por eso estamos hoy acá de primero”,
dijo Sirias.
