The context of leadership is people, and people are really complicated and predictably unpredictable. Scott Mayo, Headmaster This dilemma, whether admitted or not, haunts the social sciences. In order to provide “the answer” to an issue in leadership or education or economics, you really have to be able to isolate the variables and supply a control group. When dealing with people, those standard scientific steps are incredibly difficult to achieve. The field of education is infamous for touting the next big breakthrough in technique, only to find that the results don’t provide the universal gains in learning promised. The old adage “anyone who says ‘this is the only way’ is selling something” is no less true when the only way is espoused by someone in a lab coat with a clipboard. Again, when dealing with people, you, by definition, must account for the human element! Perhaps if we would admit that, we could free ourselves from the quest for the perfect leadership technique. As Christians, we must always be mindful to avoid dividing the world into sacred and secular. Ultimately, all things are created by God and for God and to God (Romans 11:36; Colossians 1:16), the idea and manifestation of leadership included. Therefore, given the importance of leadership in our lives, it is interesting to see how God addresses the topic in the Bible. First, we are presented with plenty of examples, both positive and negative, of leadership technique. That would lead us to believe that there are certain actions, within certain contexts, that produce desired results for leaders and followers alike. However, the overwhelming emphasis is not on techniques or strategies or personalities or temperaments. No, God’s concern is plainly with the character of the leader and the mindset brought to the leadership role. John MacArthur puts it this way: “According to Scripture, virtually everything that truly qualifies a person for leadership is directly related to character. It’s not about style, status, personal charisma, clout, or worldly measurement of success. Integrity is the main issue that makes the difference between a good leader and a bad one.” Given the importance of leadership, should it shock us that God’s primary concern is who the leaders are as opposed to what they can do? Scripture should serve as a warning to us as we often face the temptation of pragmatism. Pragmatism takes the form of justifying the egregious moral behavior of leaders with the reply that they were able to get the job done. In God’s economy, getting the job done is not the litmus test for success. An additional concern arises when we realize how much modeling is involved in leadership. Again, building leaders we can trust and emulate is so much more important than getting the job done. At Decatur Heritage Christian Academy, we know we are called to prepare students for lives of impact. For many of our students, those lives of impact will involve serving in leadership positions. Therefore, we make no apologies for the emphasis we place on integrity and character as we educate our students. From that foundation of who they are in Christ and how they are called to live, we can then provide opportunities for leadership development to provide our students with the tools and experiences necessary to develop the proper leadership mindset. In our next (and final) newsletter of the year, I will present the mindset that, regardless of technique or style, should guide our leadership efforts. Reaching school campuses for Christ by: Uniting the body of Christ in prayer, relationships, resources, and strategy; Serving student leaders and adults; and Why We Chose Decatur Heritage... This is our second year at Decatur Heritage after spending eight years in the public school system. We were involved in the classroom and PTA and watched as politics replaced prayer and God. After several years of watching the changes and the impact on our son and our lives, we Kristian, Kenzie, Karen, knew there had to be something better. We and Kevin Bowling participated in sports and went to church with several families whose children attended DHCA. We spent the next sports season talking with them and their children about DHCA and the feedback was positive. We felt God leading us to DHCA. We brought Kenzie for the tour and knew this was the place she needed to have a great experience and be able to share her faith openly. We knew that it would be a big leap for our soon-to-be eighth grade son, Kristian. Because he would have to give up sports for a year, we did not expect him to want to change schools. However, after the tour, Kristian told us that he wanted to enroll at Decatur Heritage and was willing to give up sports for a year. He spent that first year maturing and growing closer to God as he helped the team and the coaches. For the first time in years, he came home from school with excitement, telling us daily how much he enjoyed school, how much nicer the students were, and how they respected one another. The teachers at DHCA go above board with our students taking the Empowering students to carry out the time to explain if they don’t understand something being taught and making class fun. The teachers attend school events and cheer on their Great Commission. students. They are a great source of encouragement. Having Kenzie in kindergarten at DHCA has been a great experience. She finished her first year loving school and the teachers, even asking over school holidays if she could go to school. Kenzie has a great foundation for continued learning, an excitement to learn, the love of going to school, and a resource of great friends. What more could we ask for than an awesome first year of school? It is hard to explain what the past two years have meant to our family. We are so thankful for the love and support that we have felt at DHCA. Our lives had become consumed with issues at school whether it was dealing with bullies, kids growing up too quickly, or the political issues that interfered with learning. To come to a school that is surrounded by the presence of God, to see and hear the word shared, and to know our kids are blessed in their surroundings, it blesses our heart. HERITAGE HIGHLIGHTS Alumni Spotlight You’ll need these for spring! Available in the main school lobby Matt Dubach pictured with his wife, Natalie My name is Matthew Dubach, and I am a 2010 graduate of DHCA. I attended Heritage my junior and senior year, but those two years impacted my life tremendously. My time at Heritage was filled with many firsts. My senior year was our first year in the new building, and it was also the first year that Heritage fielded a football team. I was privileged to be a member of both the inaugural football team and fishing team. Along with the extracurricular activities, I also developed many meaningful and lasting friendships during my time at DHCA. I am 2014 graduate of Columbia International University, where I majored in Biblical studies and Bible teaching. During my time at CIU, I served as a resident advisor, worked at a paint company, and married the woman of my dreams. Natalie and I got married January 4, 2014. After getting married, I finished my last semester of college by student teaching at a private Christian school in South Carolina. The day after I graduated college, Natalie and I moved to Decatur so that I could work as the associate director of student ministry at First Bible Church. I have been working at the church since May 2014 and also working toward a Masters of Divinity from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. The length of this note does not allow for me to explain all the ways in which DHCA impacted my life, but primarily it instilled in me a deep love and earnest desire for the study of God’s Word. It was in Mr. Holiday’s Bible class that the Lord began to kindle in me a desire to study Scripture at a more academic level. It was also the integration of Biblical principles in other classes that taught me the importance of applying God’s Word to all aspects of the Christian life. I am so thankful for the way God has used Decatur Heritage Christian Academy in my life. It is my prayer that God will continue to use this wonderful school to place His Word central in the lives of students.
