Danville Viking Parents:
As we wrap up the year, please encourage your child to finish out strong….the end is in sight!
This is always a time of year where I find myself reflecting. As I think back over the past two
years, I am proud of what we have accomplished at DHS. A few noteworthy items:
• We have improved the curriculum at DHS, aligning the curriculum to new standards
and writing common assessments in all of our core classes.
• We have changed the way we calculate grades so they are a truer reflection of student
learning and have begun the use of mastery criteria in courses to ensure that students
have demonstrated the necessary proficiency.
• We have started our Seminar period, time built into the schedule that is responsive to
student needs and provides them with additional assistance or enrichment as needed.
• We are beginning to implement BIST, a powerful program that proactively and
systematically addresses student behavior in class.
• We have increased the number of Advanced Placement courses, increased the number
of students taking the AP tests, and subsidized the cost of the tests so any student
wanting to take the AP tests can afford to do so.
The list could go on. Change is difficult at times, but the changes we have made and are
making will continue to strengthen our school and provide our students with the support
they need to succeed. A major change for next year will be that we will have a new principal
at DHS. I would encourage you to embrace her/him with open arms. I am grateful for the
seven years I have spent here and will miss the parents, students, and staff.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
DHS REGISTRATION INFORMATION
FOR 2015-2016 SCHOOL YEAR
Registration Dates:
Wednesday, August 5:
Thursday, August 6:
1 to 7 pm (all grades)
8 to 11 am AND 1 to 4 pm (all grades)
Freshman Swim Proficiency Test:
The freshman swim proficiency test will be offered to incoming
freshmen on Thursday, August 6th from 8 to 11 am. The swim
proficiency test is MANDATORY for all first year freshmen students.
Students who choose not to take advantage of this “early” opportunity
will take the swim test in their PE class once school begins.
Emergency Forms:
Emergency forms will be included in the August newsletter. Please
complete the forms and bring to Registration. Forms need to be turned
in at the grade tables.
Student IDs:
First year freshmen will receive their student ID at the 9th grade table.
Returning freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors MUST have
their student ID’s in order to register. Students that do not have their
ID’s will either have to purchase a new ID (cost is $5) or return later to
register with their ID.
Student Locks:
Students returning to DHS for the 2015-2016 school year should take
their locks from their lockers after the designated “locker clean out”
(the last week of the school year). Those locks must be returned at
August Registration to receive the new lock combination. Students
that do NOT turn in their lock at Registration, will have to pay $5.00
to receive their new lock combination. Seniors may take their locks
with them if they wish. They have paid for them and are entitled to
keep them.
Freshman Physical Forms:
All first year freshmen must have a completed physical form to
register for the 2015-2016 school year. Students that do not have their
physical form will not be allowed to continue through the Registration
process.
New Immunization Requirements:
• Varicella Vaccine - 9th and 10th grade students must have two
doses of the Varicella vaccine. Students must have a physical form
showing documentation of the vaccine and two required doses in
order to register for the 2015-2016 school year.
• Meningococcal Conjugate Vaccine – Students entering 6th OR
12th grade must have the following with a physical form showing
documentation of the required vaccines/doses in order to register
for the 2015-2016 school year:
» 6th grade: 1 dose of MCV4
» 12th grade: 2 doses of MCV4 (2ND dose must be administered
on or after 16TH birthday)
The 1st dose received on or after the 10th birthday (the April newsletter
stated 11th birthday; 10th birthday is the newest update) and the 2nd
dose received, on or after the 16th birthday, at least 8 weeks after the

SHOW CHOIR AUDITIONS
NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
The 2015-2016 Show Choir Auditions will be held Monday-Wednesday,
May 4-6, in the DHS Choir Room. Please contact Adam Johnson,

Students in grades 10, 11, and 12 who have attended DHS for at least
one semester with a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher are eligible to
apply for National Honor Society membership in the fall. Please note
that a minimum of 4 hours of community service are required to apply
for NHS, as well as two letters of recommendation. Applications will

2015 GRADUATES — CAPS, GOWNS & TICKETS SUMMER SCHOOL
Cap and gown distribution is scheduled for Thursday, May 14th
during all three lunches. After that, they may be picked up in the DHS
Cashier’s office any time. Student accounts must be paid in full before
caps and gowns will be released.
Eight (8) graduation admission tickets will be distributed with the
cap and gown.
WE WILL NO LONGER ACCEPT PERSONAL CHECKS AFTER
MAY 14TH! Cash, credit card and money orders are accepted in the
DHS Cashier’s office. Student accounts can also be paid by credit card
online, through Skyward Family Access, or by calling 217.444.1601.
SKYWARD FAMILY ACCESS
When you are logged into Skyward Family Access, not only can you
check your grades, you also have access to your FOOD SERVICE
account and your SCHOOL FEES (FEE MANAGEMENT) account
by simply clicking on the TAB.
With prom and graduation coming up, it is important to know your
account balances.
Also, you can avoid the time spent standing in line at the Cashier’s
office. If you would like to make a payment on your account, you may
do so either at the Cashier’s office or online with a Credit Card.
ST. JAMES FOOD PANTRY
A huge thank you to the dozens of students who have been volunteering
at the St. James Food Pantry each month! We welcome everyone who is
able to help! Please note the following dates for upcoming distributions:
May 20, June 17, July 15, August 19. Distribution volunteers need to
arrive at the church by 4:30 pm and should expect to be done at 7:30
pm. Volunteers are also needed to help with set-up from 7:00-8:30 pm
on May 18, June 15, July 13, August 17. Please plan your transportation
home ahead of time. Please contact Mrs. Rachel Brown if you have any
questions (444.1653 or [email protected]). Thank you!
PROM 2015
Prom will be held May 9th at the Danville Palmer Arena from 8-11p.m.
Students must have all fees paid off before buying tickets. Ticket prices
are $30 for a single and $45 for a couple. If your son/daughter is taking
a student from another school, or a graduate, date request forms must
be returned by May 7th.
Ticket sales will end on Thursday, March 7 at 4pm. No tickets will be
sold after that date/time.
The Junior class has been hard at work to make DHS 2015 Prom:
Parisian Nights a success. We can’t wait to dance the night away!
PROM DATE REQUESTS
Date request forms are required for DHS students bringing a non-DHS
student to Prom. Dates cannot be older than 20 years old and cannot
be in Middle School. Forms can be picked up in every House Office
(Freshmen House – 114, ACE House – T109, Global House – 239, New
Tech – 317). Forms must be signed by the non-DHS student’s school
administrator (if they are attending school/college) or their employer
(if they are not attending school). FORMS MUST BE RETURNED TO
ROOM 317 (NEW TECH OFFICE) NO LATER THAN THURSDAY,
MAY 7TH. JUST A REMINDER – FRESHMEN/SOPHOMORES
CAN ONLY ATTEND IF THEY ARE ACCOMPANIED BY A JUNIOR/
SENIOR STUDENT.
Summer School will be held June 8 – July 17 (first session will run from
7:30 am - 9:40 am and second session will run from 9:45 am - 11:55
am). Classes available are Health, PE, and Auto Safety. Summer School
registration forms can be picked up at any office beginning Friday,
May 1st. Please return forms to the Cashier’s office.
Summer School Auto Safety classes will be held from June 1 – July 7
(session times are 6:30 am - 7:55 am, 8:00 am - 9:25 am, 10:00 am - 11:25
am).
Fees for academic classes: Full pay lunch: $120 per class
Free/reduced lunch: $60 per class
Fees for auto safety: Auto safety for full pay lunch: $200
Auto safety for reduced pay lunch: $100
Auto safety for free lunch: Waived
Students wishing to take courses via credit recovery must sign up
through their guidance counselor. There is no fee for credit recovery
courses.

If you have already been accepted at a college for next year, please
stop by Room 138 and fill out a Final Transcript Request to have your
transcript sent at the end of the semester. This is for any college,
including DACC.

for Crest Design
In November of 2014, Mrs. Drennan’s
Digifolio class entered a contest to digitally
create a crest for the newly commissioned
USS Illinois Virginia classed submarine.
Numerous high schools from the State of
Illinois submitted artwork to the contest.
New Tech Freshman, Cyrena Rangel,
won top five honors for her Photoshop
crest design. Cyrena was presented with
a plague acknowledging her achievement
on April 2, 2015 at a banquet in Chicago.

Over 1400 students and community members par cipated
in or visited the fes val; enjoying the booths, ac vi es,
entertainment, immersion rooms, and food. The response
has been overwhelmingly posi ve.
Students at DHS (not to men on faculty, staff, administra on,
parents, community members, board members etc.) have
been singing the praises of the Interna onal Fes val.
Student presenters (booths and entertainment) were
excited to share their culture and their talents, and faculty
as well as community members and parents were thrilled
to share their experiences. Many men oned the delicious
food as well. In fact, everyone is saying this is something
the community has needed for a long me, and they have
expressed their hope that we do it again next year.
Thank you for helping everyone touched by the fes val
celebrate the value of all cultures in Danville and the
surrounding communi es. Your contribu on and support
made this fes val a success!!

Senior Graduation Meeting: There will be a graduation
meeting during Seminar in the auditorium on Friday, May
1st. This meeting is to inform seniors about transcripts for
college, account balances, proper graduation behavior,
graduation dress code and other miscellaneous senior
information. Early Grads will need to check in with Mr.
Ricky Hoskins before entering the auditorium. Please ask
your graduate to see the handout that will be included with
their cap and gown. This sheet has important information in
it!
Jostens Deliveries: On Thursday, May 14th cap and gown
distribution will take place during lunch periods. Student
accounts must be paid in full for cap and gowns and tickets
to be picked up.
Formal Senior Dinner: This year, the Annual Senior Dinner will be held at the
Danville Boat Club on Sunday, May 17th at 5:30 p.m. The dinner is a buffet and
the cost is $20.00 per person. Tickets will go on sale April 27th – May 1st in the
Cashier’s Office. After dinner is served, seniors will be honored in the various
organizations, sports, and activities they were involved in. The senior slide show will
be shown. Parents, guests, students and early grads are all invited and encouraged
to attend!
Senior Lunch: On Tuesday, May 12th, all seniors in good standing will be
permitted to eat lunch outside during 6th hour class. Food and drinks will be
provided for all seniors in attendance.
Senior Breakfast/Activity Day: On Friday, May 15th starting at 8:30 a.m., seniors
will retreat to the cafeteria, where they will be treated to breakfast. They will then
move to the auditorium to watch the Senior Superlative Awards and the Senior
Video. At approximately 11:30 a.m., seniors will be signed out and dismissed at the
Clock Tower doors for the rest of the school day. Seniors are not to be back on
school grounds until after 3:00 p.m. Seniors that do not sign out will be considered
unexcused for the day.
Panoramic Class Picture: The senior panoramic picture will
be taken on Friday, May 15th during the Senior Breakfast.
All early grads are invited and welcome to be a part of this
event. Early Grads will need to check in with Mr. Ricky
Hoskins before entering the cafeteria.
2015 Commencement Ceremony: Graduation is scheduled
for Sunday, May 31st at 3:00pm. Students must arrive no
later than 2:00pm.
