Conducted a half-year thesis research project on the religious and social issues presented by Francisco de
Quevedo’s Su espada por Santiago. Challenged and questioned the political and religious motives and
leverage that the poet used to convince the Spanish Catholic Church that a national female matron saint
was morally unjust. Received honors for the paper titled Quevedo: El poder, la política y la religión en la
polémica del patronazgo de Santiago.

Traveled to Mexico City and collected data through a program of field measurements at colonial period
archaeological sites in Mexico DF, Puebla, Tlaxcala, and Oaxaca with the cooperation and participation
of Dr. Eleanor Wake of the University of London. Surveyed 16th-century colonial churches to help test
the hypothesis of embedded stones in the buildings and worked with data collected in the field. Presented
an oral as well as a written paper titled The Art of Conversion: 16th-century Religious Murals, which
focused on the complexities of using religious art to promote religious conversion among indigenous
populations.
