FOREWORD
I have known Dr Kathleen Wills for four years both professionally
and personally and I hope that I have played a small part in
helping start her training. Her rapid success is due to her
excellent powers of communication and her uncanny ability to
rapidly accumulate and utilise knowledge.
Dr Kathleen has written a book that will help every one of us
trying to live and stay healthy in the stressful and toxic world of
the 21st century.
I have been practising medicine for 45 years and have always
been struck by the high incidence of fatigue, anxiety, and
insomnia among my patients. We are all trying to combine
earning a living, being successful in our occupations, paying
our mortgages, raising our children and maintaining healthy
relationships, all of which can lead to prolonged stress. This
constant stress generates a “fear and flight reaction” which can be
prolonged. If you think of the analogy of keeping your foot on the
accelerator of a car, the engine will eventually be unable to stand
the strain and will overheat and seize. This is what happens with
our adrenal glands and the hormones cortisol and adrenaline
that they produce. Once the constant high levels of cortisol are
no longer sustainable by the adrenal glands, adrenal fatigue or
burnout occurs, leading to fatigue, anxiety and insomnia.
The consequences and treatment of this condition are ably
and comprehensively covered in Dr Kathleen’s excellent, wellresearched book. You need go no further for help in relieving
your symptoms than to read this book. Dr Kathleen emphasises

clearly how you can help relieve your symptoms during your busy
day with healthy stress-busting foods, exercise and relaxation
techniques and well-chosen supplements.
Burnout can be a complex condition affecting sleep, nutrition
and hormones. Dr Kathleen concisely discusses all of these factors

INTRODUCTION
Constantly tired, not feeling well, and told you’re
healthy? What’s going on?
“I’ve been to seven doctors and many specialists. I know
something is wrong but they all tell me I’m normal.
What’s wrong with me?”
“I’ve been pretty healthy all my life, but just over the past
few years, I don’t feel like myself. I can’t ever seem to
recover from this constant tiredness that I feel. But all my
test results come back normal. Can you help me?”
I
hear this from athletes, academics, corporate executives,
entrepreneurs, artists, child-minders, lawyers, and even teens
and children. They come from all walks of life. And they all
have something in common. They come to my door, wanting
answers.
Why are they so tired, when they have been to their doctor,
who runs the standard blood tests and tells them they are
normal?
From a conventional medical point of view, these people
usually are normal: significant or sinister disease is absent.
However, in the standard medical consultation time of 10–20
minutes, it’s not usually possible to discuss non-medication
related issues, such as nutrition and lifestyle. Subtle medical
symptoms are sometimes missed because of time limitations and
fear of sharing with our doctors things we may be ashamed of or
just think we need to “bear with”.

John was a 48-year-old, good looking, successful CEO of a large
international corporation. As a younger man he was a track star
at Stanford University, ate anything he wanted, and seemed to be
in perfect health. As he worked his way up the corporate ladder,
he experienced continual stress, and finally as CEO, travelling
around the world, he seldom exercised, ate fatty foods at numerous
restaurants, and gained over forty pounds. His doctor advised him
to lose weight and lighten his schedule, but the demands were just
too great. John refused to change his lifestyle, and four years after
becoming CEO, his career ended. He had a series of small hidden
heart attacks caused by partially blocked arteries, and finally died
at the age of 52.
If you passed these people on the street, you would never know
how they feel. But they know. They feel a chronic sense of
exhaustion, a lack of resilience, a loss of vibrant health. They try
to ignore the feeling and just keep going. But the feeling drags
at them and eventually affects their performance, activities and
relationships.
Often these people are passionate busy people in business and
industry; people who push themselves to the max emotionally,
physically and mentally.
We need to stop the nonsense of pushing ourselves to
the max and feeling completely physically and emotionally
drained. This is not okay, and not beneficial for our long term
health and relationships with others. When did doing just the
acceptable level at times not become enough?
Often the stories come from people who hold ordinary jobs,
tend to their families, and are the unsuspecting victims of an

Mary was a 29-year-old housewife and mother of two healthy
children. She was happily married, enjoying her life as a wife and
mother, and part time personal assistant. During her second delivery,
she lost a lot of blood, and afterwards never quite felt the same.
She was frequently tired, in spite of her efforts to eat well, walk
daily, and rest. Her medical doctor said she was fine, that she tested
normally and that she should continue to rest. But Mary was the
hidden victim of underactive thyroid due to hormonal changes after
giving birth and iodine mineral deficiency. What she didn’t realise
was that even if she was eating healthily, her home country of
New Zealand lacked iodine in the soil so her foods didn’t naturally
contain enough iodine. She used a gourmet salt which didn’t contain
adequate levels of iodine. Unaware of what else to do, she restricted
her lifestyle for months and years.
excessively busy lifestyle, unhealthy diet, a lack of exercise, or a
hidden deficiency in their physical makeup that was undiscovered
by conventional medicine.
I find it sad when well-meaning people work with all their
hearts and souls, to provide the best they can for themselves
and their families, and amidst all of the pressure to achieve,
they suffer from physical and mental burnout. This sometimes
progresses to strokes, heart attacks and cancer later on. That is
often when a person declares they need to make a change for the
better, by cutting back at work, getting help at home and making
dietary and exercise changes. But why should it take a crisis to
get started?
This is not an indictment of conventional western medicine.
I have the greatest respect for the training and interventions

of western medical doctors. I advise all my patients to have a
thorough medical examination by a qualified physician to
diagnose and rule out any disease or pre-disease condition.
But frequently this is not enough. My patients often have
conditions that arise from nutritional or lifestyle deficiencies
that are not part of a typical physical examination. In this book
I’ll take you on another kind of journey, a journey into the world
of integrative medicine that combines the best of evidence-based
natural medicine with conventional western medicine to help
you discover and gradually resolve those conditions that seem
mysterious and continue to drag you down.
Symptoms
Before we begin, let’s check out some chronic (that is, long term)
symptoms:
A struggle to get out of bed in the morning
A struggle to get to sleep
Restless sleep
Brain cloud until you have coffee or energy drinks
Weight gain around your middle
High cholesterol
Low moods or anxious feelings

Excessively dry or oily skin or rashes

Frequently feeling overwhelmed by all your demands
If you or someone you love has experienced any of the above
symptoms, you owe it to yourself to read on and find out why
this happens and what to do about it. There are reasons for
these things that are scientifically based, but little known and
understood in our current medical environment. My passion is
to use all the scientific and other healing information available
to support people’s health concerns, validate those concerns
(they’re not crazy to be constantly feeling this way), consult
and refer to other doctors when necessary, then use all my
integrative and natural medical knowledge and skill to help
them set up a protocol to heal themselves. Further, I want to get
the message out, far and wide, that there are effective, evidencebased complementary health options available to maintain and
optimise total mind and body wellness. With this knowledge will
come self-empowerment. Some suggestions you will be able to
employ all on your own. Some you may want to consider and
then consult with an integrative medicine expert beforehand
to make sure you have a correct diagnosis and understand the
treatment. Hopefully, in either case, you will be well on your way
to better health.
The book is divided into chapters about various symptoms
and health concerns. For those who are really short on time,
there is a handy quick quiz at the beginning of the book to help
you focus on particular areas of concern and a Getting Started
section at the end of each chapter to help you implement changes,
one step at a time.
The conventional and holistic medical world can work as
one. I am going to show you what healthy living really means,

productivity and satisfaction with life.
It’s time to make your life so much better, starting from the
inside out. Let’s not wait until we are debilitated and diseased

Being a busy person means that a lot of people want a lot of
different things from you. There are a lot of demands and a lot to
manage within your daily life, and the truth is that it can be quite
stressful. When you can learn to put aside some of this stress and
instead focus on making yourself the very best in every sense
of the word, then it all comes together. This may not happen
overnight, but you are going to be amazed when you put your
best effort into this. Don’t be surprised if other people notice a
change in you without telling them that you have made changes.
Also don’t be surprised if you attract new people into your life
with similar values and mind-sets the healthier you become.
Humans are naturally drawn to healthy, happy, balanced fellow
beings!
I have guided you through tips and ideas of how to be in the
best picture of health in every common area of your role and
day. The stressful situations may not go away, but you will learn
how to manage them properly. The demands may not lessen, but
you have learned how to create a healthy lifestyle at the core.
You have seen just how much each element of this lifestyle can
benefit you, and now it’s time for you to make the change.
Let this all absorb in and then think about the changes that
you can make right away. Turning to the right foods, getting into
a regular exercise routine, and even working through common
issues for you such as jet lag can all be beneficial. There are so
many ways that you can take care of yourself, and when you make
that choice you will see that you are better not just in a personal

way but also professionally in your role.
No matter what you have going on as a busy person, you can
always benefit from the power of proper nutrition and natural
therapies. I have shown you what it means to be your best, and
now it’s time to make the change. Taking a little time out every
day to work on protecting your best health will be well worth the
investment. Making yourself, your health, and your well-being a
top priority will always make you better in your personal life and
will show through for you as a professional too.
Remember, it’s not okay to give it your all and sacrifice your
health for the sake of a promotion or other business success or
even for your family. The most important thing you can do for
your family is to be around as long as possible, disease-free and
feeling happy and calm. Think of each person in your life that
you care about and those that aren’t even that close to you but
somehow you influence them. Your behaviour and actions affect
them. You will be setting an example of how to eat well, be active
and live a balanced lifestyle. This is the ultimate healthy state of
influence. The ultimate success. So if you aren’t feeling “normal”,
it’s not okay to continue on like this. Take action. Make that your
greatest achievement!

Dr Kathleen Wills currently

She speaks regularly for corporate
and educational organisations and
Wellness Retreats New Zealand. She’s

and Oh! Baby magazines. She has
also been highlighted as a natural medicine expert by Hardy’s

40 per cent of Americans use non-mainstream approaches along

She also holds a Bachelor’s degree specialising in Medical
Anthropology from San Diego State University in which she
conducted laboratory studies on skeletal remains looking at
signs of nutritional deficiencies and disease in both humans and
non-human primates. She minored in psychology and Japanese.
Dr Kathleen is currently a leader in the Australasian
Integrative Medicine Association (AIMA) and a member of
academic honour societies Phi Beta Kappa and Golden Key along
with memberships in numerous medical bodies. Previously, she
worked on a research project in Maori Health at The University
of Auckland Medical School and diplomacy in international
relations. She’s also a medical advisor for the Live More Awesome
Foundation to reduce the stigma of depression.
Dr Kathleen has been active in the community for eight years
as a volunteer certified SPCA/St John’s Animal Assisted Therapist
with her Siberian husky dog, Una, comforting children in
hospital. She has recently been awarded a New Zealand Queen’s
Diamond Jubilee Medal for her dedication to the community
and animal welfare. She also supports a Balinese charity for
orphaned babies, Yayasan Sayangi Bali.
