A word from the organisers…
Fellow bowlers and visitors,
We would like to extend a warm welcome to you all to Dunoon for
the 67 Annual Dunoon Bowling Tournament or more affectionately known locally as ‘Harry
Gordon week’, after the gents singles trophy.
th
Many of you are local or returning bowlers to the tournament, but there are also a few new
faces who have entered this year and we would like to extend an extra special welcome to
them. We hope you will find the hospitality and friendship at all the Cowal greens
something to remember and that you will return to play with us again in the future.
This year is our first year of running the tournament week, and we would like to thank John
Donald and Myra Campbell on behalf of all the bowlers for the hard work they put in over
the past few years. We hope to continue where they left off, as well as bringing our own
ideas to the table in moving the tournament forward with the changing times in the bowls
world.
In the coming years we particularly want to focus on the exposure of the tournament across
the West of Scotland and beyond. In years gone by, the tournament has welcomed visitors
from across the UK, and this is definitely something we will try to promote through the use
of a new website and social media. We will also be driving to increase the sponsorship of the
tournament, which is vital to the success of the week.
This year we decided to make no significant changes to the way in which the tournament
runs, as we think it’s important first to gauge the opinions of you, the people that actually
make the tournament the success it is. We have looked at other tournament weeks across
the UK and beyond and we have some ideas to increase the amount of bowls matches
guaranteed for all entrants next year. To that end, we will be distributing a survey during the
week to all the players, and we would really appreciate it if you could take the time to give
us your feedback and any ideas you may have. We would like all your updated contact
details, particularly mobile numbers and email addresses to aid better communication in
years to come, and there is space on the survey for this information too.
In our review of the tournament, we noticed disparity in the way the prize money had been
distributed compared to the number of entrants in each competition and therefore the
number of games played to win trophies. In line with other weekly tournaments, we have
tried to distribute the prizes on offer more fairly based on this, and this is detailed with in
the handbook. Whilst we’re sure you won’t all agree with this, we are trying it this year and
would like your feedback again within the survey. We hope you will agree that the prestige
of winning the trophies is far greater than any prize money on offer.
2
In recent years there has been quite a drop in the number of players taking part in the
consolation competitions, the balloted mixed triples and mixed pairs. In the 80’s and 90’s
(that’s as far as we can remember) these were fiercely contested trophies and provided
more bowls matches for those that had been eliminated from the main events. We are not
sure of the exact reasons for the drop in numbers willing to take part in them, but would
encourage you all to enter if you find your week has ended prematurely. We have swapped
the days and times a little and have increased the prize money on offer in both in the hope
of encouraging more of you to take part. Obviously we will take a view on whether to hold
the events depending on the numbers we receive. Full details of the how to enter both
consolation trophies are given within the handbook.
There are also plenty of events you can get involved in during the evenings, and we would
hope you will support all the clubs in their endeavours to provide something for you to
enjoy during the week. We have included a list of the evening activities that we know about
to date, as well as information on how to enter or get tickets.
We would also like to encourage you all to utilise text messaging where possible during the
week if you need to communicate with us. We are both playing in the tournament also, so
will not always be able to take phone calls, therefore we have provide our contact details
and instructions later in the handbook.
Finally, as we all know the success of the tournament can be affected by mother nature, we
will try our best to communicate promptly with all the clubs should inclement weather have
an effect on the match scheduling.
We’re not perfect and we will make mistakes, but we ask for some patience this year whilst
we take the reins and we will try to adapt the tournament to suit the majority in the years
to come. Get those surveys filled out – it’s your chance to mould the tournament for the
future.
Good luck to you all and here’s to a great week on and off the bowling green!
Cheers,
Andy Weir and Stewart McIntyre

Consolation Tournaments

part in these trophies if you find yourself eliminated from the main events.
We have switched around the order of the consolations, with Thursday night now being the
mixed pairs and Friday the balloted mixed triples. It is hoped this will allow those who don’t
qualify in the mixed pairs to drop into the balloted mixed triples. We also avoid clashing
with the tournament dance at Bogleha’ on the Friday night.
