Our Schools and Community
Located in the spectacular Columbia River Gorge, a
geologic wonder that forms the border between southern
Washington and northern Oregon, Lyle is located on the north
bank of the Columbia River where it merges with the Klickitat
River.
Lyle School District serves the residents of Lyle, Dallesport,
Appleton, High Prairie, Timber Valley, Murdock and
the surrounding areas. Lyle School District offers a K-12
educational system for approximately 240 students in our
region.
Formerly known as Klickitat Landing, Lyle hosted Lewis
and Clark in 1805. In 1876, the first Post Office east of the
Cascades and north of the Columbia River was established
here to serve most of eastern Washington.
Our school district enjoys the benefits of a smaller, more
rural community setting. Traditional small-town values and
strong community support help to make our schools an
effective and positive influence on students and families.
We have a committed team of teachers, classified staff,
administrators and school board members who work closely
with one another and with parents to meet the unique needs
and interests of students. Our students have opportunities to
study a comprehensive curriculum, take part in physical fitness,
vocational courses and after school sports and activities.
Extensive recreational opportunities, including hiking,
fishing, skiing, snowboarding, windsurfing, and sailboarding
are close by, as are museums, cultural events, dining and
shopping. The sunny hillsides are home to vineyards and
orchards. Within a two-hour drive is the major metropolitan
area of Portland/Vancouver, home to an international airport
and many other amenities.
Traditional small
town values in a
gorgeous setting:
»» At Dallesport Elementary, average
classrooms contain fewer than 30
students. This creates opportunities
for increased individual attention
and greater flexibility.
»» At Lyle Middle School we are
committed to continued growth
as we work to improve learning
outcomes for all students.
»» At Lyle High School, we
believe that everyone can
master challenging educational
experiences and learn from a realworld environment, thus allowing
all to apply knowledge, skills and
abilities needed to succeed in life.
“The public school is
the greatest discovery
made by man.”
Horace Mann
