Summertime is a great time to start thinking about how you can be involved at
temple. There are so many ways to do this
and one of those ways is to join one of our
choirs. Our Shiru Dor L’dor Youth Choir
is look for new members 4th -7th grade,
and our Shir Chadash Adult Choir is looking for anyone 13 years or older, to join
these great groups.
The Shiru Dor L’dor Youth choir meets every Sunday from
11:30-1:00 beginning Aug. 16th 2015 to May 15th 2016. We
begin with a bit of social time and have a snack, and then
we rehearse. The youth choir sings for Rosh Hashanah, Yom
Kippur, Sukkot, Simkhat Torah, and Purim at which the choir
performs the Purim Spiel, and the first Friday of each month for
Erev Shabbat service. The choir also participates in the “New
Zimriya” a local Concert put on by all the Jewish Youth Choirs
in the area. This past year for the first time I took two choir
members to the National Song Leaders Boot Camp in St. Louis.
I chose two students who exemplify their love and commitment
for Jewish music to take to this conference; they were exposed
to the larger world of Jewish music and songleading.
Our Shir Chadash Choir meets every Thursday from 7:30-9:00
pm beginning July 2nd 2015 to May 19th 2016. This choir sings
for Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and every third Friday of the
month. This choir is a small group of very committed individuals who love Jewish Music and we would love to have you join
them.
You do not need to be able to read music for either of these
choirs. All we ask is that you love to sing!
I hope you will consider joining one of these choirs.
If you have any questions please call me at 248-967-4020.

The Rabbi’s Corner
A Pilgrimage to the Land of Israel
A congregational trip to Israel can be fun, exciting and adventurous. It can be an experience where you travel to a country
and go from place to place and you will passively “take in”
what you see, barely speaking to the locals or barely having an
understanding of what you see and its significance. It can be a
trip where you stay only a few hours in one place and you constantly rush to the next one, barely having the time to process
what you have seen. A trip to Israel can be conceived as a five
star trip unconnected to the reality that most Israelis live day by
Rabbi Arturo Kalfus day.
This is not how I like to do a foreign trip; particularly to Israel.
My vision of a congregational trip to Israel is one of a pilgrimage of the spirit. It is
one that connects you to the land, the culture and its people. My vision of a congregational trip to Israel is not a typical “tourist” one. My hope is that a trip to Israel will
be a life-changing encounter, where you will be enriched spiritually by what you have
experienced. My vision of this congregational pilgrimage includes understanding the
different facets of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. This is crucial for me, since our news
in America does not allow us to fully understand the situation that Israel is in. So many
times our Jewish identity is shaken by events in Israel long
distance.
A pilgrimage of the spirit where you will connect to the land, the
people and the culture.
It is in this spirit that I am embarking in organizing Temple
Emanu-El’s congregational pilgrimage to Israel for the second
half of June 2016. That is, a year from this June. This trip will
be geared for adults and mature teens that are open to this type
of travel experience.
Phyllis and I are going to Israel in a few weeks, in part to prepare for our congregational trip. We want to share with you our
connection to the land, the people and the culture. We both lived
in Israel for several years and we both have a special connection to Jerusalem. We want to share with you these special places
that were part of our younger years. As an example, I want to share with you a place where my father fought during the Israeli
war of independence in 1948 and what those memories did for me and my Jewish identity growing up in Argentina.
This will be a very personal sharing of Israel with you, in a similar
way that we organized last year’s congregational trip to Argentina.
So, I hope that you will consider joining us in the second half of
June 2016. I truly look forward to a trip that will be transformational and deep.
Phyllis will join me at an informational meeting we will schedule in early September to let you know more details about this
adventure.
From my heart to yours,

FRom the President
Thank You For Your Support
As I look back on my two year Presidency, I find myself reflecting
upon the tremendous support received from my fellow congregants
and Temple Staff. Without your continued support, my journey
from July I, 2013 until today, would have been more challenging
than it was. During my tenure, we hired a new Rabbi, a Temple
Educator and an Executive Director. With your patience, the commitment of our Executive Committee and the Board, we effectively transitioned to these positions. You also supported our Temple
by generously donating to our Kulanu and special High Holy Day
fund-raising campaigns. And for these, I am enormously grateful.
My gratitude also goes out to those who contributed their time and
effort to helping with the myriad of volunteer activities these past
two years. Included are those wonderful volunteers who worked
on committees, greeted our congregants at worship services, sang
in our choir, opened their homes to meet and greet our Rabbi,
delivered food to grieving families, organized dinners, baked and/
or sponsored Onegs, and other activities too numerous to name.
These volunteers go unheralded and rarely look for recognition.
Their generosity taught me to appreciate the spirit of giving.
The past two years has also taught me to be more realistic about
my expectations. I had envisioned that all that I had wanted to
accomplish would be easy to complete. However, I soon learned
that being Temple President was more complicated than I had anticipated. It was a valuable lesson in the importance of remaining
positive when dealing with the complexities of a large organization. More importantly, I am grateful for the support you gave me
during my two year term. The recognition that I was not alone in
my endeavors and others were always there to help was an extremely positive experience.
We, as a congregation, can be proud of all that we have accomplished. Our hard work is beginning to bring us dividends. More
members are actively participating in Temple programming and
getting involved in our committees. Young families are participating in the special programs geared toward their children. Our
Early Childhood Community continues to grow. Saturday morning
service has become an integral part of our worship experience.
Friday night Shabbat service has effectively integrated music into
the fabric of prayer. These changes, and others to come, will translate into Temple Emanu-El continuing to be a viable connection to
Jewish life in our community.
Congratulations Florence Melton
School of Adult Jewish Learning
Graduates: Class of 2015!
Temple Emanu-EI wishes mazal tov to this year’s 67
graduates of the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish
Learning of Metro Detroit. The Melton School, a project
of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and sponsored
locally by Federation’s Alliance for Jewish Education and
the Jewish Community Center, is an innovative program
in adult Jewish learning that explores Jewish ethics, history, values, traditions and current trends and dilemmas
facing today’s Jewish community. We especially applaud
our temple-affiliated graduates for their commitment to
enriching their lives through Jewish education:
Mindy Drongowski
Joyce Kaczander
Ann Klein
Julie Englender (Temple Garden Committee)
This year’s graduation will be held on Wednesday,
June 3 at 7:00 p.m., at the Jewish Community Center,
Berman Center for the Performing Arts, West Bloomfield.
To register for the upcoming Florence Melton School of
Adult Jewish Learning program in the fall,
or for more information, call the Melton office at
248-205-2557 or e-mail [email protected].
We will recognize our Melton graduates at the Friday,
June 12 Erev Beatles Shabbat service, at 7:00 pm.
It has been a privilege to serve this congregation and I will always
to grateful for your warmth and support. Thank you for the opportunity to meet and connect with so many wonderful people. I am
confident that our next President, Dennis Kayes will benefit from
your continued commitment and support.
Sincerely,

DIRECTLY TO YOU: News from the ECC
WHERE OUR EXPERIENCE PROVIDES YOUR
CHILD WITH THE BEST EXPERIENCE
Once again, our Young Master’s Art Show was
enjoyed by all of our families. With art projects
created throughout the year, the growth and development of the children, as well as their creativity,
were reflected throughout the building.
With our annual Shalom celebrations taking place,
another school year is coming to a close. Many
of our children have been with us from “womb to
room” thereby becoming an integral part of our
Eileen Brand
Early Childhood Community. I know the experiences in our school have given the children the confidence and tools
for success in their future education.
Spring has finally sprung! Rabbi Kalfus joined our Jungle Room
green house to help with spring planting. A picture is worth a thousand words. Enjoy these photos.
Day camp will begin on Monday, June 15th. Our Camp Run About
campers will enjoy fun in the sun with water play, outdoor play, Moon
Jump, and Farmer John and his farm animals. Camp Get-Away children will enjoy weekly field trips, swimming at the Jewish Center and
special performances by Ben Spitzer and Paula Doak, among others.
I wish all dads a happy and relaxing Father’s Day. The following may
give you a chuckle or two, but also food for thought:
4 years: My Daddy can do anything!
7 years: My Dad knows a lot…a whole lot.
8 years: My father does not know quite everything.
12 years: Oh well, naturally Father does not know that either.
14 years: Oh, Father! He is hopelessly old-fashioned.
21 years: Oh, that man-he is out of date!
25 years: He knows a little bit about it, but not much.
30 years: I must find out what Dad thinks about it.
35 years: Before we decide, we will get Dad's idea first.
50 years: What would Dad have thought about that?
60 years: My Dad knew literally everything!
65 years: I wish I could talk it over with Dad once more.

Be sure to give your child an extra hug today.

Membership
Important reminders about annual membership
commitments for the year beginning July 1, 2015
Todah rabbah for your support of our congregation. Your financial commitments are a significant part of the financial foundation of our Temple. When
you complete your dues commitment form we ask, if you are able, that you
increase your pledge so our congregation can better serve all of us.
If you have not yet completed and returned your dues pledge form, please do
so as soon as possible. The deadline this year for returning dues pledges is
June 12. If you need another form sent to you, please contact the office. If you
have questions about your financial obligations to the Temple, please contact
our Executive Director Fred Frank (248) 967-4020, or call and ask to speak
to one of the members of the Financial Obligations Committee, to discuss
privately your specific concerns and situation.
Please note that our membership commitment policy is that if you do not
return your pledge form by June 12, your dues commitment automatically
defaults to the standard dues rate of $2,250 or what you pledged last year –
whichever is higher. If that is not your intent, please complete and return your
pledge form.
For our Religious School parents, please note that your membership dues
pledge needs to be received and financial obligations need to be current for us
to complete the Religious School registration process.
Thank you from the Financial Obligations Committee!

High Holy Days Preview
A few important dates come up well before
the High Holy Days, so we have a summary
schedule at right. Reminder: As always, in
order to have HHD tickets mailed, members
need to be paid up in all their financial commitments through September of 2015. Your
July, August and September statements will
show what that amount is, and you’ll need to
have it paid up by September 1, 2015 in order
for tickets to be mailed. Thus, if you have not
yet returned your Dues Commitment Form
for 2015-16, please do so at your earliest
convenience. We incur many expenses at the
start of the fiscal year as we get ready for the
holidays and for Religious School, so we do
very much need and appreciate your timely
payments. We hope you will enjoy a relaxing
summer.

The Temple Emanu-El
Community Garden is
Alive and Well
Think mitzvah, tikkun olam (repairing the world), shomrei adamah
(keepers of the earth), Earth Day, and being good neighbors, wrap
that all together with education and fun, and you have a pretty
good summary of our Community Garden here at Temple EmanuEl. Starting with seeds, we grow a wide variety of vegetables and
flowers which are donated to the senior citizens living next door
to us. Many of the recipients are elderly Russians who remember
a lifestyle of growing their own produce in the Soviet countryside
and the community garden gives them a welcome opportunity to
eat fresh and organic once again. In fact, the garden produce is so
anxiously anticipated, that much of it is “self-harvested” before the
garden crew can get to them!
This past year’s youth group instruction focused on the farm
to table food cycle (or lack thereof) in our Detroit area. Many
speakers, discussions, activities, and field trips centered on this
theme. Inspired by one speaker, our youth group decided to build
a compost bin to enhance our garden soil and encourage recycling
of appropriate scrap foods from Temple functions. A truly inspiring article on our youth’s commitment to helping can be found at
myjewishdetroit.org/2015/05/earth-bound-and-eco-friendly/
In honor of Earth Day, all of our Temple Religious School students
coordinated efforts to prepare the eighteen beds for planting. With
the addition of a new gro-light system for starting seeds in the
Temple basement, and an anticipated new irrigation drip system in
the beds, the garden crew is psyched and ready to grow. We are always looking for like-minded members to join us on Sunday
mornings as we take care of the garden together from 10 AM to noon. With or without experience, it is – quite simply – a lot
of fun. MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND DO WHAT YOU LOVE TO DO. Come join us. For further information, contact Phyllis
Meyers at 216-509-5667 or Deb Renner at 313-320-4376.

Go Green at Temple Emanu-El
Article reprinted from myjewishdetroit.org
By Carly Sugar, Youth Director, Temple Emanu-El
Traditionally, Jewish Religious School has an intellectual focus. Focusing exclusively on the intellectual, however, can leave students a step
removed from their individual interests and their personal Jewish journey.
For most young adult students at any given Jewish congregational school,
attendance is reluctant and, for some, it’s downright involuntary. “My
parents are making me,” or “So I can put it on my college application,”
or “So I can get confirmed, whatever that means,” are common responses
to the question “Why are you here?” Very seldom do students arrive with
the eagerness for learning that comes from actually wanting to be there.
Carly Sugar (Youth Director/Young Adult Educator),
Samantha Katz, Sarah Finegood (both 11th grade)
Getting down to earth
At Temple Emanu-El, Rabbi Arturo Kalfus enlisted Director of Congregational Learning, Sue Salinger, and Youth Director, Carly
Sugar, to build a new post-B’nai Mitzvah curriculum – from the ground up. Through a Jewish lens, students have spent the year
examining societal systems which have created vast injustices worldwide. Learning to ask tough questions while struggling with the
discomfort of how these systems benefit or oppress them, the group has become more aware and concerned about the issues around

common resources- clean water, clean air, sustainable energy,
healthy food, the accessibility of these resources for all – issues
that are ultimately of environmental and social concern to everyone. Moreover, they have explored ways to take action.
“It’s been a great experience learning about these issues…along
with the potential that we have to make a change,” said 11th
Grader Samantha Katz.
Finding a practical solution
On a cool and rainy Sunday in April, students of Temple EmanuEl’s Young Adult Program gathered at Great Lakes Landscape
Design, in Oak Park, to build a compost system for the Temple as
their final project for the year. A student-conceived and student-led
project, the three-bin system will serve to convert food, paper and
yard waste into “black gold” to enrich the Temple garden, while
standing as a model for the community to practice the mitzvah of
becoming Shomrei Adamah – guardians of the Earth.
Leaders on the project: Constructing the compost bin at
Great Lakes Landscape Design, Carly Sugar and Sam Katz
pair up on building a section
The concept of composting for the congregation grew from the
unit of study on Adamah (Earth), where students explored their local food system, its unsustainable techniques, and greener alternatives. When Ty Petrie, an expert on compost in Detroit, joined the class to share his knowledge, the students decided to approach the
Temple’s Board of Directors to propose building a compost system on Temple Emanu-El’s grounds.
“If we don’t do this, no one will,” remarked 11th Grader, Sam Hurwitz.
Taking ownership, taking charge
From start to finish, the class organized and directed the process of their compost project. Students chose their roles and responsibilities, each according to their interest in research, curriculum development, design and building and project organization. Sarah
Finegood, 11th Grade student and President of Temple Emanu-El’s NFTY chapter, presented the class proposal to the Temple’s Board
of Directors. The Board’s approval was all the positive feedback the students needed to spark their excitement and confidence to move
the project forward.
“Seeing these students take complete ownership of a project, from conception to execution, and watching them learn from a place of
individual purpose has been remarkable,” said Carly Sugar. “Learning happens here through letting students take some measure of
control of their own learning process, and they are inspired.”
A visit to the Detroit trash incinerator with EMEAC (East Michigan Environmental Action Council) was another influential experience. Students were surprised to learn that the country’s largest solid waste incinerator is in Detroit. EMEAC representatives and
youth discussed with our students how the incinerator negatively impacts our environment and the health of residents living nearby.
Stepping out of the classroom, into the world
This youth-led compost initiative is just one example of how to build skills and knowledge through hands-on work, which contributes to feelings of empowerment and ownership, and creates deeper participation and engagement. This year, students have explored
Jewish issues of sustainability in a four-world’s model: earth (body), water (emotion), fire (intellect) and air (spirit/imagination). From
visiting experts teaching seminar-style, to exploratory trips into Detroit’s communities working for change, to direct hands-on projects,
this year’s students are active in a whole new way for Temple Emanu-El.
“We introduced students to as many contemplative practices as time allowed this year,” said Director of Congregational Learning Sue
Salinger. “We see that our over-scheduled, performance-driven students need a release, a skill set that can allow them to rest in the
midst of their high-speed, always-on lives. Jewish meditation, attention to Kavannot (intention) in daily life, and art as a practice of
self-awareness building are all part of what an engaged Judaic curriculum can offer.”
Temple Emanu-El’s Young Adult Program hasn’t cracked the code on engaging this overscheduled and over-stressed post-Bar Mitzvah
set. They are making strides, however, by incorporating student-led project-based-learning activities, guest speakers and facilitators,
and contemplative and experiential learning modalities.
In a world burdened with problems of overwhelming speed, Temple Emanu-El’s Religious School looks not only to ancient Jewish
wisdom, but also to its students’ interpretations of it. This group of students is helping the Emanu-El community learn the meaning
and action behind our favorite Hebrew phrase: tikkun olam.
