Jerusalem: A 5,000-year-old
brewery has been unearthed in Tel
Aviv, the Israel Antiquities Authority
said on Sunday. The find includes fragments of ancient Egyptian-made pottery vessels that were used to prepare
beer. The site is currently being uncovered in salvage excavations, ahead of
the construction of skyscraper office
buildings in Israel’s financial capital.
“So far, we have found 17 pits, which
were used to store agricultural produce
in the Early Bronze Age I (3500-3000
BC). Among hundreds of pottery shreds
that characterise local culture, a number
of fragments of large ceramic basins
were discovered that were made in an
Egyptian tradition and were used to
prepare beer,” Diego Barkan, director of
the archaeological excavation on behalf
of the Israel Antiquities Authority, said.
12 dead in
Indonesian landslide
Jakarta: Twelve people were killed
and 11 houses buried after a landslide
triggered by heavy rain in Indonesia´s
main island of Java, an official said
Sunday. The landslide hit Tegal
Panjang village in Sukabumi district
in west Java late Saturday after a particularly heavy downpour, according to
national disaster agency spokesman
Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. “We found
all 12 bodies,” he said in an update,
revising the earlier death toll of 10
and two missing. He said heavy rain
caused a cliff to collapse and hit the
village, burying 11 houses. Landslides
triggered by heavy rain and floods are
common in tropical Indonesia during
the rainy season. The national disaster
agency estimates around half the
country´s 250 million population lives
in areas prone to landslides.

Indore: The NDA government
will try its “level best” to bring
in a countrywide ban on slaughter of cows by evolving a consensus, Union Home Minister
Rajnath Singh today said.
“Cow slaughter cannot be
accepted in this country. We
will make all-out efforts to ban
slaughter of cows and will also
try hard to have a consensus for
this purpose,” he told a gathering of spiritual leaders of Shwetambar Jains, a prominent sect
of Jainism.
Referring to the cow slaughter
ban in the BJP-ruled Madhya
Pradesh and Maharashtra, the
senior BJP leader said nobody
should doubt the government’s
commitment to prevent slaughter of cows.
“Nobody can question our
commitment to ban slaughter
of cows. The BJP government
in Madhya Pradesh has enacted
a tough law for this purpose so
has the Maharashtra government. We didn’t spare time to
send a bill passed by Maharashtra government to President for
his assent,” Singh said referring to the Maharashtra Animal
Preservation (Amendment) Act
which also extends the ban on
slaughter of bulls and bullocks.
On the occasion, Acharya
Shivmuni wanted the Centre to
bring in legislation in the current Budget Session for banning
slaughter of buffaloes besides

EARTH NEWS SERVICE
Jammu, Mar 29|15: The
Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), backed
by the Pakistani forces, has
set up new launch pads within
striking distance from the International Border (IB) to ensure
that fidayeen attacks are swift
and deadly, intelligence inputs
have revealed. The recent attacks on security establishments, especially in Jammu,
have been part of this strategy.
A number of inputs gathered
by the Intelligence Agencies indicate that these terror camps,
virtually lining the Jammu border, have been frequented by
LeT founder and 26/11 mastermind Hafiz Saeed.
Based on the recent infiltra-
tion attempts, the reports- which
have been prepared by the Border Security Force (BSF) and
submitted to the Union Home
Ministry -- mention that the terror launch pads have been set
up within three km from the
Jammu border.
Some of these reports, say
that eight to 10 camps have
been identified in the border
areas where trained terrorists
are housed while awaiting final
instructions and a suitable opportunity to launch attacks on
India. Bada Bhai Masroor, Abhial Dogra, Chaprar, Sukhmal
and Charkbhura in Pakistan,
close to the Jammu border, have
been identified as the launch

educational sector in Jammu and
Kashmir is in shambles and is dealing
with a mafia known as transfer-mafia
which has been ruling the roost for the
past many years leaving the student
and teacher community in lurch.
Had there been any doubt it was set
to rest by none other than the new
Minister for Education Naeem Akhtar
on Saturday when he said that the
previous government has handed over
a completely shattered and disturbed
system to the new dispensation and
has vowed to restructure the sector
with his own vision.
The PDP-BJP coalition government
has flagged education as top priority
and if the new Minister for Education
is to be believed the government is
soon going to introduce a new education policy in the state which aims at

improving the deteriorating condition
of the government schools, planned
transfer policy and other slew of
measures to bring a sea-change in the
educational sector of the state.
The Minister for Education who himself has been a seasoned bureaucrat
seems to mean business this time and
has hinted to close down the transfer
industry in the state allegedly introduced by the previous regime.
The minister has also announced
some new measures which include
repositioning of teachers, rationalizing of transfer policy, formulation of a
charter of duty, GPS monitoring of the
education officers on tour, revisiting
curriculum for promoting creativity
among students, toilet facilities in all
schools, more academic training programmes, vocational courses bedsides
providing laptops to the headmasters
etc.
The million dollar question is does
J&K need a new education policy or a
complete educational reform?
There have been numerous talks
of new policies and turn-arounds
whenever a new government takes
over but the fact is that this sector has
remained neglected, abused and corrupted by the successive governments
as it has become not only a transfer
mafia to earn huge bucks but also a
political battlefield for the politicians.
However the new minister sounds
sincere and determined as well as
‘emotional’ but the question is will he
be able to clean the mess and bring it
back on tracks?
The observers feel that the new
minister should not focus only on the
government schools but involve the
private sector as well to clean the system, bring accountability and increase
competition so that the student community benefits. The observers and
the stake holders also want the
