A strong 6.7-magnitude aftershock sent people running for open spaces as they struggled with the devastation caused by yesterday's massive 7.9-magnitude temblor that displaced and injured thousands besides causing a deadly avalanche on the Mount Everest claiming 17 lives. "The latest figure says more than 2,000 people have died and several thousands have been wounded and more counts are coming," said Narayan Khatkar, Nepal's Urban Development Minister. A police official told media here that 2,123 people were killed. Over 5,000 people were also injured in the earthquake and the dozen aftershocks that continued till today, with the strongest measuring 6.7 on the Richter Scale. Climbers on Mount Everest said they saw fresh series of avalanches and a big landslide in the base camp. International teams, including from India, have touched down quake-hit Nepal that has declared a state of emergency in the wake of the disaster caused, the worst in over 80 years of Nepal's recorded history. Rescuers have been hunting for survivors under heaps of debris with bare hands as well as heavy equipment though the efforts have been hampered due to fresh tremors and thunderstorms. Locals and tourists sifted through mounds of debris for survivors. Cheers rose when people were found alive, thought mostly bodies were pulled out. The earth- quake and the aftershocks left behind a trail of death and destruction, flattening houses and buildings, including the iconic Dharhara tower and the landmark Darbar Square in the heart of the capital, trapping scores of people. Thousands of people spent last night in the open in chilly weather, anticipating more aftershocks. 1,053 people are reported killed in the Kathmandu Valley alone. Officials fear the death toll could rise as desperate search for survivors continued. According to initial reports related to today's aftershock, a tunnel caved in at the Trishuli Hydel Project and around 60 labourers are feared trapped. The former finance minister said that he had led a delegation of National Conference leaders from the Jammu Province and met Governor N N Vohra to invoke his attention to the New Recruitment Policy of the PDP-BJP Government. “We ‘Hailed AIIMS for Kashmir, sought similar facility for Jammu’ while emphasising that the National Conference has been consistently welcoming AIIMS for Kashmir. Rather said that late Friday evening, the Jammu based reporter sought his views telephonically over their meeting with the Governor. “I told him that whatever transpired between the delegation and the Governor has been already disseminated to media through a handout”, he said, adding that despite insistence of the reporter, he said he had nothing to say beyond what has been stated in the handout. Rather said he was hurt to find next morning what had been attributed to him. “More painful was the fact that it has been carried by a newspaper which is known for its objectivity and credibility”, he said adding that this was, however, not the case with the instant issue. “The handout issued by the party had been sent to the newspaper concerned as well and it would have been highly appreciated if the published report was based on that”, the former finance minister maintained. Urging the newspaper concerned to browse its e-mail and see what the press release issued by JKNC Media Cell stated about the meeting of the delegation with the Governor. For information of the newspaper and to put record straight, Mr Rather wished the esteemed readers to know what the press release was all about. J&K vulnerable to natural disasters: Hamid Choudhary ‘Pro-active approach must to deal with earthquakes, floods’ GOF Staff Reporter Jammu, April 26: Expressing grave shock over devastations caused in Nepal and other areas of India because of earthquake measuring 7.9 on Richter scale, People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Abdul Hamid Choudhary urged the state administration to remain cautious especially when Indian Meteorology Department has warned of more earthquakes aftershocks in North India in coming days as well. The vulnerabilities of earthquake, fire, floods and avalanches in Jammu and Kashmir State are on rise in the given situation a review of disaster management plans by Deputy Commissioners of all the districts of the state would go in right earnest and help save thousands of lives in case of any natural disaster. This would be nothing but a pro-active approach to deal with any untoward situation in near future. Choudhary Hamid said role of various stakeholders under the umbrella of the State Disaster Management Authority including various government departments like Revenue, Police, Irrigation and Flood Control, PWD, PHE, PDD, CA&PD, Health, Agriculture and most importantly Army and other Air Force must be specified well in advance to ensure quick and prompt response to any disaster whether natural or manmade. The entire North West Himalayan Region he added was seismically vulnerable and Jammu and Kashmir was in seismic zones IV and V while Srinagar was itself in Zone V and has witnessed several earthquakes in the past worth being that of 2005. “We cannot afford to leave everything to the situation as and when it will occur”, he added. Jammu and Kashmir State, he said has faced worst earthquakes and witnessed massive destructions especially in Uri, Bhaderwah, Leh and other areas where several lives were lost and property worth millions of rupees destroyed. Hap hazardous growth of cities must also be stopped henceforth in case people intend to save their lives. Timely placement of State and District Disaster Management plans would not only reduce earthquake risks in the state but also help save many lives. The coalition government led by chief minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed he said is sensitive towards people’s issues for which he was relentlessly working to make sure that no region ever feels discriminated or neglected. The sincerity of government he said will have to be understood by the stakeholders and those forces which are trying to spread any wrong word defeated. Meantime awareness about all aspects of disaster preparedness on a continuing basis must also be made known to the people so that they cooperate and help save lives. Congress welcomes Governor’s decision on new Job Policy ‘Government should respect the aspirations of youth’ GOF Staff Reporter Jammu, April 26: Terming the return of draft ordinance on new recruitment policy by governor as the much needed step Salman Nizami, and Publicity Organising Secretary Pradesh Congress Committee today hailed the decision. Salman said that this policy was totally a "treacherous" one and has created a sense of fear and choas among the masses specially the youth. Such a policy would have only a sense of "biased" recruitment thereby plunging livelihood of lacs of youth into dark. He further added that this policy is mockery with the aspirations of lacs of youth and would have put lives of youths in jeopardy. This policy has frustrated the youths as it will only ensure backdoor employ- ments, nepotism and a large scale corruption thereby denying the deserving candidates. It would create another mafia of paid recruitment as the process of recruitment is not going to be fair in this very pattern. Denying the government's statement of temporary feature, salman said that this policy is a permanent feature and will create a drastic impact on the generations to come. Nizami said the Congress is against the Ordinance route. PDP- BJP government should call a special sitting of state assembly to debate on recruitment, before sending it again if they want to.” He said the Congress would restore to agitation path ‘if government goes ahead with the same police and does not respect the aspirations of youth’. Salman said that the return of the draft ordinance has become possible only because of continuous pressure mounting from congress party which has strongly lashed the state government over this unjustified policy, which would have staked the lives of thousands of youth. 2nd F-IMNCI concludes at GB Pant Hospital Srinagar GOF Staff Reporter Srinagar, April 26: The second training of F-IMNCI (Facility based Integrated Management of Neonatal and Childhood Illnesses) was conducted in the PG Department of Paediatrics, GB Pant Hospital Srinagar concluded today. APMCC reiterates demand for Development Board for KPs GOF Staff Reporter Jammu, April 26: All Parties Migrants Co-ordination Committee (APMCC) the apex organization of displaced Kashmiri Pandits has reiterated its for establishment of Kashmiri Pandit demand Development/Welfare Board on the pattern of other similar welfare/development boards constituted for other ethnic communities to oversee all the affairs related to Kashmiri Pandits. In a joint statement issued here today, Vinod Pandit Chairman and senior journalist and National Spokesperson APMCC King Bharati have said that Kashmiri Pandits who are living in forced exile for the past 26 years have faced government apathy due to absence of any constitutional authority to deal with the affairs related to their welfare. The leaders said that organizations like Relief Department for migrants should be disbanded and all the affairs handed over to the Kashmiri Pandit Development/Welfare Board with full representation of Kashmiri Pandits. Vinod Pandit said that the present PDP-BJP coalition government must consider their demand on priority basis as Kashmiri Pandits were becoming restive with no imminent headway of their welfare schemes announced by the government from time to time. King Bharati, National Spokesperson while elaborating their demand said that since there have always been talks of return of migrants to valley, establishing townships, enhancement of relief, but on ground nothing has happened due to absence of any constitutional authority that can effectively take-up these issues with the government. Bharati said that establishment of a Welfare/Development Board exclusively for Kashmiri Pandits envisaged by APMCC in its Vision Document, “Path for Survival” released in 2006 would go a long way to mitigate the problems of the community adding the present relief organization dealing with Migrants should immediately disbanded and all the affairs of relief, return, and other, matters handed over to the board where only Kashmiri Pandits should decided the developmental issues for the community. He warned that any delay in mitigating the miseries of Kashmiri Pandits would only aggravate the issue forcing them to come out on streets to seek justice. He said the government has been taking the issues of Kashmiri Pandits lightly adding it was their long pending demand to constitute National Apex Committee having full powers and representatives of ground level parties of KPs to decide the future of Pandits but the government was sleeping over the issue. He said that now since the new government has taken over in the state it must show its concern for KPs for which the first step can be establishment of Kashmiri Pandit Development/Welfare Board in the state. YP lashes out at Nirmal Singh’s remarks on AIIMS GOF Staff Reporter Jammu, April 26: Lashing out at the remarks of the Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh despicably endorsing the establishment of AIIMS in Kashmir, Young Panthers lambasted the BJP for resorting to the lame duck posturing before the PDP by murdering the aspirations of the people of Jammu Pradesh only for the lust of power. Gagan Pratap Singh, Spokesman Young Panthers deplored the highly obnoxious statement by the Deputy CM while responding to the successful Jammu Bandh call by the Panthers Party and other social and political organizations over the issue of AIIMS quoted that “there was no question of snatching the premier health institute from Kashmir and giving it to Jammu”. Gagan while lampooning at the BJP’s pusillanimous surrender before the PDP by murdering the aspirations of the people of Jammu region only for the sake of power reminded the Deputy CM that the Union Finance Minister Mr.Arun Jaitley on 28th Feb. 2015 in New Delhi had categorically and in very unequivocal terms announced the establishment of the prestigious 1600 crores project of AIIMS in Jammu which was duly endorsed and acknowledged with gratitude by the Union MoS and MP from Udhampur Dr.Jitender Singh. Gagan further revealed that the Finance Ministry’s announcement was explicitly conveyed to the State and made public in various daily newspapers of 1st of March 2015 and wondered how despite of the announcement having made by two Union Ministers in the National capital the BJP partnered govt in Jammu and Kashmir state allowed the prestigious project to be transferred to Kashmir. Gagan condemned the remarks of Nirmal Singh and advised him to contest the next Assembly elections from Kashmir while dubbing his remarks as highly treacherous and perfidious emitting the foul smell of duplicity and deceit against the wishes of the people of Jammu. He said that the Panthers Party shall continue the movement for AIIMS until the prestigious health edifice is restored to Jammu region at all costs and lamented that the Saffron Party has entered into a worst ever ‘political debauchery’ with its diametrically opposite coalition partner PDP leading to the gross resentment and discontentment among the masses which could breakdown anytime and blow the BJP to smithereens. Intention not policy will solve PoK DPs problems: Chuni Amit reviews ongoing Natrang stages fisheries projects at Jammu BJP for playing Hindi Play ‘Firotti’ in Accuses deceptive gimmicks Sunday Theatre series GOF Staff Reporter Jammu, April 26: GOF Staff Reporter Jammu, April 26: Natrang staged an intense dramatic action ‘Firotti’ a play in Hindi in its ongoing theatre series ‘Sunday Theatre’. Written by country’s most celebrated writer of Hindi literature Uday Shankar Bhat, the play was directed by Neeraj Kant. A big dig on the thrust for materialism, the play carried a very important message signifying the importance of relations than money. Although, the play revolves around a tense situation but the situational comedy and the acting of the artists did not make it appear a mere didactic presentation and made it very much colourful. Speaking on the occasion, Natrang Director Balwant Thakur informed that Natrang is the only theatre group which despite constraints have sustained a weekly theatre activity since last eleven years now and that too without any break. He complimented all who contributed selflessly for this historic happening of theatre in India. In a creatively designed set, the stage action of the play ‘Firotti’ opens at the home of one ‘Baisakha Ram’ where all the family members are very tense and ‘Baisakha Ram’ himself has turned mad as someone had kidnapped his son and is demanding a huge amount to set him free. Miser to the core, he is concerned with earning the money and investing it to earn more, Baisakha is not ready to pay a single penny no matter what happens to his son. His family and well wishers try to make him agree to pay the money as money and material is far less important than the relations, that too akin. But he pays no heed. His ‘Munim’ is also much concerned about his reactions after receiving the threat letter. He even tries to suggest him different resources from where he could arrange and can pay off the money and get his son released, but of no use. At the end, the son comes home but the happiness of Baisakha Ram got evaporated on knowing that all the amount of morning collections has been paid to get him back. He turns unconscious but the other family are happy to find their family member back in the home. A very significant satire has been made on those for whom relations are far behind materialism through this play. The lead role of the play Baisakha Ram was played by Rajan Thakyal and others who supported brilliantly included Kritika Bhaau, Sayeed Mudasar, Shivam Singh, Shekhar Sharma , Shivam Singh and Abhee Balgotra. The light was designed and executed by Neeraj Kant. SOS International-An organization for PoK Displaced Persons today organized a rally at Dasore, RS Pura. Holding BJP led Central Government and State Government responsible for the plight of PoK DPs, S. O. S. International Chairman, Rajiv Chuni while addressing the rally said that unless and until Government modifies the intention to solve the PoK DPs issue and nothing will be fetched by giving fake assurances and changing roadmaps only, adding that there is time to heal the wounds of PoK DPs but government is rubbing salt over the wounds of PoK DPs but making repeated excuses simply close the eyes to the demands of PoK DPs. “It has been approximately an year, BJP has taken the reins of Nation and it has been almost 2 months since PDP-BJP coalition has taken up the responsibility to give a free and fair governance to the people of Jammu and JKBWA urges establishment of AIIMS at Jammu Kashmir but the issue of PoK DPs is still there moreover, it has not taken up the snail’s pace towards its resolution in BJP rule both in centre and state”, he said, adding, “Only fake assurances were given to PoK DPs over their genuine demands and government has forgotten the miseries of PoK DPs who have been living under depression for the last 68 years”. Chuni further said that Prime Minister Narinder Modi kick started its election campaign from Hiranagar and Modi in its rally vowed to solve the demands of PoK DPs. “Modi in its rally stated that all the linked demands of PoK DPs will be solved out once BJP comes into power in centre and it Ladakhi students up ante against new recruitment policy GOF Staff Reporter GOF Staff Reporter The Jammu and Kashmir Batwal Welfare Association at its meeting held in Samba today under the chairmanship of Mr. R.L. Kaith, urged the Government of Jammu and Kashmir to take an immediate decision to establish AIIMs (which has been sanctioned by the Union Government for the State of Jammu and Kashmir)at Jammu region so as to control the situation. The Association at the same time, appealed the Union Government to sanction an additional AIIMS for Kashmir Valley, as it had done earlier by allotting one more Central University to the State so as to keep the scale of justice even. By doing so, there would be no controversy over the matter, it added. Association members said that there was a prime need to set up an AIIMS in the State as its poor and hapless people could not afford to go to New Delhi for seeking the specialized treatment. Various students Association of Ladakh today staged protest under the banner of All Ladakh Student Joint Action Committee (ALSJAC) to show resentment against the ‘New Recruitment Policy’ which stand announced vide Special Recruitment Ordlnance,2015 and has the approval of the State Cabinet. Under this policy, the recruitment both gazetted as well as non-gazetted shall be contractual for a period of seven years and thereafter the recruits will be regularized after giving satisfactory service to state. Large numbers of Ladkahi students assembled outside Jammu University and staged protest against NRP. They said that they believed the New Recruitment Policy is against the interest of huge unemployed youth of state as a whole and well designed to trample their most genuine aspirations. “We believe it will create scope for Political interference in the process of selection as well as as- SAMBA, April 26: has been almost one year since BJP has come to power but no further concrete step has been taken in favor of PoK DPs” Chuni added. He further said that it was the first time when any party mentioned PoK DPs demands in its national manifesto and it gave a hope to PoK DPs of getting their issues solved but it is very sad that nothing has been done on ground but only fake assurances. While elaborating to displaced persons, Chuni stated that the kind of stand is taken for KPs similarly there is utmost need for BJP to take the stand for PoK DPs. Alleging discrimination with PoK displaced persons, the S. O. S. International chairman lamented that the commu- nity has been made orphan politically as well as socially by depriving it of its genuine rights. He further said that PDP should consider the role of PoK DPs in Nowshera and other constituencies of the state and they need the prime attention of Mr. Mufti. PoK DPs contributed a lot in assembly polls as it share 90% votes in Nowshera constituency. “Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed now, is not a PDP leader or CM of PDP only, in fact he is the CM of Jammu and Kashmir and Mufti must give equal treatment to all as the head of state. Chuni made a fervent appeal to BJP, Central Government and State Government to come forward and solve the problems of PoK DPs. He stated that PoK DPs have been waiting for helping hands since 1947 to get ointment to their wounds. He said that government must pass PoK DPs package as early as possible so that they can get their due right, adding that justice must be done to PoK DPs as they have waited it for a long time. Others who addressed the rally are Lalit Kumar, Roshan Lal, Koushal Sharma Sarpanch Dasore, Sanjay Kohli & Rajesh Sharma. Jammu, April 26: certaining the performance. It would I also be a setback for the reserved categories such as SC, ST, OBC ,RBA etc because as per the NRP the recruitment shall be made on contractual basis taking into account only the merits of the candidates and there shall be no division of post tor reserved categories”, they mentioned. They opposed the provision of Seven Years duration of the contractual recruitment and the uncertainty of making them (contractual recruited employees) permanent after the seven years seems a very vague provision. Also the provision of Performance basis could create another problem of political interference and in ad- dition it will create malpractices like nepotism, favoritism and frustration among the educated unemployed youths which ultimately may lead to mass corruption and huge loss to the state's economy. Thus we are demanding for rollback of New Recruitment Policy. ALSJAC also protest over mass transfer of promote lecturer of Jammu and Kashmir division to the vacant post of Ladakh division. The mass transfer of 114 lecturer to Ladakh region just before announcement of the NRP would be very harmful for Ladakhi youths who have acquired the necessary qualification for being appointed as lecturer on contractual basis. Termed the youth as the architects of the future, the Minister and said empowerment of youth is at the centre-stage of the Government’s policy and same is being pursued with a sense of commitment. He urged the youth to shoulder the responsibility of steering the state towards prosperity and stability. Listing various initiatives taken by the PDP-led coalition government between 2002 and 2005, Zulfkar said establishment of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU), construction of Mughal Road, opening of J&K Bank and Treasury besides granting Tehsil status to Darhal are some of the initiatives taken by that regime which facilitated economic development of Rajouri. The Minister said that after a long phase of turmoil, the state is again on the threshold of socioeconomic emancipation and nobody will be allowed to derail the process of development and progress set in motion by the present dispensation. Referring to government’s initiative to recruit doctors, teachers etc at the district level, the Minister said that the purpose of this effort is to ensure effective basic services to people of far flung areas, adding that persons selected would have to work in the specified ar- eas and this would help cope up the manpower shortage in the crucial sectors in remote pockets of the state. On the occasion locals raised several issues like inadequate power infrastructure and supply, scarcity of potable water, dilapidated condition of roads, establishment of degree college and community hall, dispensary at Doodaj besides exploring tourism potential of Shakarmarg, the Minister issued instructions to the officers to formulate a project in this regard adding that no doubt there are lot of facilities created in many areas but due to lack of management on part of previous regime, these could not serve the purpose and failed to fulfill the aspiration of peoples. Zulfkar while responding to the demands, said the people of the state have pinned high hopes on the present coalition and all the possible resources are being pooled to provide convenience to people at their doorsteps. Describing various centrally and State sponsored schemes as right initiatives to address unemployment problem in the State, Minister for PHE, Irrigation and Flood Control Choudhary Sukhnandan today said that these most effective self employment schemes would encourage the youth to earn livelihood as entrepreneurs. This was stated by the Minister in a public meeting held at village Chattha Gujran in Marh here today. Since the Mahavidyas are independently-existing Goddesses, they exist devoid of male counterparts. They are said to be existent without a 'consort' (or the Purusha, like the other forms of Shakti are often identified in the Tantric texts as the energy of a male deity, primarily, Lord Shiva). Thus, Bagalamukhi too is one of the ten forms of the wisdom goddesses, symbolising the potent female primeval force by her own will. "Bagalamukhi" is derived from "Bagala" (distortion of the original Sanskrit root "valgā") and "mukha", meaning "bridle" and "face", respectively. Thus, the name means one whose face has the power to capture or control. She thus represents the hypnotic power of the Goddess. Another interpretation translates her name as “crane faced”. Bagalamukhi has a golden complexion and her dress is yellow. She sits in a golden throne in the midst of an ocean of nectar full of yellow lotuses. A crescent moon adorns her head. Two descriptions of the goddess are found in various texts- The Dwi-Bhuja (two handed), and the Chaturbhuja (Four handed). The Dwi-Bhuja depiction is the more common, and is described as the Soumya or milder form. She holds a club in her right hand with which she beats a demon, while pulling his tongue out with her left hand. This image is sometimes interpreted as an exhibition of stambhana, the power to stun or paralyse an enemy into silence. This is one of the boons for which Bagalamukhi’s devotees worship her. Other Mahavidya goddesses are also said to represent similar powers useful for defeating enemies, to be invoked by their worshippers through various rituals. Bagalamukhi is also called Pitambaradevi or Brahmastra Roopini and she turns each thing into its opposite. She turns speech into silence, knowledge into ignorance, power into impotence, and defeat into victory. She represents the knowledge whereby each thing must in time become its opposite. As the still point between dualities she allows us to master them. To see the failure hidden in success, the death hidden in life, or the joy hidden in sorrow are ways of contacting her reality. Bagalamukhi is the secret presence of the opposite wherein each thing is dissolved back into the Unborn and the Uncreated. No. DIP/J- 627/2015 Dated : 25-04-2015 Executive Engineer PHE Mech. Division North Jammu Glimpses of Future CYMK Glimpses of future BJP must assert now he BJP-PDP coalition govt. in Jammu & Kashmir is being criticized especially by the people of Jammu region for the shifting of AIIMS to Kashmir as they termed it as discriminatory attitude towards the Jammu region. Recent Jammu Bandh on the call of some Jammu based political and social organizations is an eye opener for the coalition partners especially BJP which has mandate only from Jammu region and people of Jammu have great hopes from the party. Centre has announced establishment of AIIMS in Jammu but the Kashmiri leadership manipulated the whole things and cleverly managed to say that AIIMS will be established at Kashmir but the BJP ministers and leaders maintained absolute silence over the issue while the other regional parties have been fighting the issue on roads. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the budget session on 28th Feb 2015 in New Delhi announced establishment of AIIMS in Jammu which was duly acknowledged by Dr. Jitendra Singh Union MoS who also expressed his gratitude to the Finance Minister for sanctioning the premier health institute for Jammu. The disgraceful surrender of prestigious AIIMS to Kashmir by the BJP has deprived region of having a prestigious health institution as felt by Jammuites. Kashmir has been bestowed with SKIMS, Soura which is a premier institute equivalent to AIIMS. It was the BJP and its allied groups that used to raise the issues of Jammu region on all the previous occasions and riding on the sentiments they managed to grab 25 Assembly seats from Jammu and now they have turned their back to the people of Jammu. The State government is ignoring the interests of Jammu region and playing with the emotions of the people of Jammu. The BJP leadership must mend its way and pay proper concern over the issues related to the interests of Jammu region for which people of Jammu have given mandate to the party and created the history by sending 25 BJP representative to the Legislative Assembly to raise the voice of Jammu region in the Assembly and now they expect it from the party. People of Jammu have displayed their unity and solidarity for the cause of Jammu region by observing a complete and peaceful shut down. Well begun is half done. It was a historic bandh as almost all the political and social organizations of Jammu minus BJP had joined hands to defeat the nefarious designs of the newly formed BJP partnered coalition of perpetuating bias against Jammu region by transferring AIIMS to Kashmir. It is regrettable that the coalition govt. had refused to make even a single comment in respect of any of its commitments made to the people of Jammu region during elections. Silence maintained by the ruling alliance especially by the Jammu based Ministers on burning issues like surrender of AIIMS meant for Jammu to Kashmir, launching a highly obnoxious recruitment policy besides non incorporation of Jammu based issues in Common Minimum Programme had created a lot of resentment in the region with the heat generated due to Jammu’s persistent deprivation having turned into a furnace. Dy. Chief Minister Dr. Nirmal Singh given on the last day of durbar move and appearing in the media categorically refused the restoration of the already approved AIIMS to Jammu. BJP appeared to have hypnotized itself into believing that the people of Jammu are naïve and that it is indispensable. It is the time for BJP to arise, awake and assert in view of public anger having reached its crescendo. T JAMMU MONDAY APRIL 27, 2015, PAGE 6 Losing way, days after coming to power? BY : ZULFIKAR MAJID, I seems fears of the sceptics about the survival of PDP-BJP alliance in Jammu and Kashmir have started to come true as the coalition government is being tested by its inherent contradictions. The manner in which controversial issues have been raked up and treated by the alliance partners since the formation of coalition government on March 1 has for now given its critics a reason to rejoice. On various issues from the release and re-arrest of hardline separatist leader Masarat Alam Bhat to separate townships for Kashmiri Pandits, residency rights to the 1947 West Pakistan refugees, revoking AFSPA and Article 370 of the constitution, the PDP and the BJP are entirely on different pages. The latest controversy over raising of proPakistan slogans and flags at a rally in Srinagar last week, subsequent arrest of Masarat Alam and killing of a young protester in firing by security forces on the outskirts of Srinagar city last week has after a long time given separatists a chance to come out of hibernation and dominate the political scene of the Valley once again. It seems Kashmir is once again back to where it all began: Demand for azaadi, talk of plebiscite, anti-India rhetoric and anarchy on streets. The 45-year-old Masrat, accused of waving Pakistani flag in Srinagar during a recent rally where he also allegedly raised anti-India slogan, is currently general secretary of the hardline Hurriyat Conference. He is being seen as a possible successor to octogenarian Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Masrat, who was released last month on the orders of PDP patriarch and Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, after spending more than four years in prison, is seen as the brain behind in triggering stone pelting agitations in the Val- BY : BHARAT BHUSHAN r Modi’s dislike of ‘five-star NGOs’ stems from his experience of activists taking up the cases of the 2002 Gujarat riots... Also, since he came on a pro-corporate platform, he may not want ‘people-centric issues’ to hamper development. The Narendra Modi government has suspended the registration of Greenpeace India under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act, 2010, (FCRA) for 180 days, preventing it from receiving any foreign funds. Earlier it had frozen the bank accounts of Greenpeace for alleged financial irregularities. It has also placed the Ford Foundation on its watch list for allegedly funding organisations not registered under the FCRA. This came after the Gujarat government sought action against the agency for “direct interference… in internal affairs of the country and also of abetting communal disharmony in India.” There is nothing new in harassing inconvenient civil society organisations and nongovernmental organisations (NGOs) by denying them FCRA clearance. Past governments have also done this. Yet there is a renewed vigour with which the Modi government has been targeting NGOs, ostensibly based on a report of the Intelligence Bureau which accused NGOs of “using people-centric issues to create an environment which lends it- M self to stalling development projects”. The government has since gone out of its way to stigmatise them, thwart their free movement and erode their credibility. Perhaps Mr Modi’s dislike of “five-star NGOs” stems from his experience of activists taking up the cases of the 2002 Gujarat riots and of extra-judicial murders of alleged terrorists in the state. It could also be that Mr Modi, who came on a pro-corporate platform, does not want “people-centric issues” to hamper development. It may also come from the fact of his being roundly defeated in Delhi by a ragtag group of NGO activists who formed the Aam Aadmi Party. The antagonism to NGO activism, however, is not limited to the Prime Minister. It extends to the Bharatiya Janata Party and its Hindutva affiliates. But why is this antagonism not shared by other political parties — especially those that were a part of the United Progressive Alliance, which was no less corporate-friendly? The UPA, in fact, brought them into policymaking through the National Advisory Council (NAC). It recognised that legislators often represented little more than personal interests and patronage networks. Some UPA leaders, therefore, thought it prudent to invite the leaders of various mass struggles inside the political tent. It was through the NAC that the UPA was able to put social inclusion at the heart of Masarat’s intended audience which included Lashker-e-Toiba founder Hafiz Saeed. Before his re-arrest, Masarat defended his actions saying it wouldn’t deter them (separatists) from their goal. After Geelani’s speech, a large section of the youth raised slogans in favour of Masarat, asking him to take the stage. He then raised the slogan, “Kashmir banega”, as the youth responded with cries of “Pakistan”, Masarat shouted, “Jeevay, Jeevay Pakistan (long live Pakistan)”. The release of Masarat had created a furore across the country and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had to make a statement in parliament to pacify the opposition parties who cornered him over the issue. After recent anti-India rally, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh had to call Mufti and ask him to put Masarat behind the bars. APPEASING THE SEPARATISTS In the last almost two months since the formation of the new government, both Modi and Rajnath had to intervene several It is Nepal’s tragedy but India’s grief BY : KANCHAN GUPTA his is the moment that tests national resolve. We must rise as one and stand by our brothers and sisters in Nepal. We have the resources and the skills, the expertise and ability to help those who need it the most now. When the earthquake struck at noon on Saturday, severe as it was (five on the Richter scale, we were later informed), I found myself cursing the developer who had sold us the apartment with the promise that our gated community was beyond the faultline that runs through India’s National Capital Region. The tremors lasted for a long while, longer than the usual quakes that periodically shake and stir, ever so gently, Delhi, Gurgaon and Noida. Framed pictures and paintings rattled on the walls; the ceiling fans swung wildly. I was reminded of the terrible Tehri earthquake of October 1991, weeks after relocating to Delhi from Kolkata: Chunks of plaster fell off the walls of the poorly constructed apartment we had hired. Since then we had laughed off the ‘mild tremors’, as media calls them, that visit the National Capital Region. We lived on the faultline and there was nothing one could do to stop the ground from shifting occasionally. That was till we moved further away from Yamuna, almost deep into western Uttar Pradesh. We were repeatedly assured this was not within the seismic zone. Hence the surprise and annoyance when the house shook violently on Saturday morning. Muttering imprecations, we left our apartment only to realise the trembling was over. Minutes later, social media was flooded with messages from far and wide. It was then one realised the earthquake had originated somewhere else and we had felt the ripple effects. The US Geological Survey’s website, which is the first to track and report earthquakes, informed us that the epicentre T Why PM hates some NGOs Perhaps Mr Modi’s dislike of “five-star NGOs” stems from his experience of activists taking up the cases of the 2002 Gujarat riots and of extra-judicial murders of alleged terrorists in the state. A former commander of now-defunct Hezbollah militant outfit, he shot into prominence for his role in leading 2010 summer uprising in Kashmir in which 120 protesters and bystanders were killed while dozens of government buildings and police stations were set on fire. During the mayhem, he had launched the ‘Quit Kashmir Movement’, asking people to continue protests until azaadi (freedom) came to Kashmir. However, he was arrested in a meticulous operation by the police in October 2010. Immediately after his arrest, violence ebbed and life returned to normal in Kashmir. However, his release from the prison on March 7, this year, once again raised Valley temperatures to crescendo. At a rally in Srinagar, instead of reciprocating Mufti’s gesture, Masarat was busy rousing the crowd against his government and its partners in Delhi and praising Pakistan. The rally was broadcast live in Muzzafarabad, capital of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir for the benefit of Geelani’s and its policies. The NAC became an institutionalised space for giving voice to the marginalised and the dispossessed. It made the government and Parliament look like sensitive democratic institutions as a result of pathbreaking rights-based legislations, like the Right to Information Act of 2005, the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act of 2005, the Forest Rights Act of 2006, the Right to Education Act of 2009, the National Food Security Act of 2013, and the Land Acquisition Act of 2013. The point is that the Congress-led UPA was able to strengthen its focus on inclusive development using social sector NGOs for brainstorming. Why don’t the BJP and Prime Minister Modi do the same? What explains their inability to listen to civil society organisations and to chastise those who say that something needs to be done about rampant poverty, malnutrition, lack of health facilities and sanitation? The reasons are both historical and structural. The origins of the BJP and before that, of its predecessor, the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, are in fact in an NGO parent-organisation — the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. The RSS, despite its quasi-paramilitary culture, is the largest and most powerful NGO in the country. It has spawned hundreds of NGOs of its own. Their influence extends from the deepest interstices of India’s social structure to almost all the organs of the state. The RSS, with its own brand of Hindu nationalism, has always been suspicious of secular organisations. The exclusivist notion of Hinduism as “Indian-ness” developed by V.D. Savarkar and the RSS itself, developed in the context of the Hindu-Muslim riots of the 1920s and in the aftermath of the pan-Islamic Khilafat Movement supported by the Congress and Mahatma Gandhi, and perceived by Hindu radicals as a threat to Hindu society. The RSS still believes that the “Hindu nation” is under threat from the minority Muslims of India and proselytising Christians. The RSS is suspicious was off Pokhara in Nepal, a short distance from Kathmandu. Initial reports pegged the earthquake’s intensity at 7.5, it was later revised to 7.8, which is huge. More worrisomely, the earthquake had occurred at a shallow depth of 9.3 miles. Within minutes, thanks to social media, there was a flood of information on the devastating impact of the earthquake in Kathmandu valley. The first bad news tweet came from former Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai, with a picture of a flattened homestead. After that the proverbial floodgates burst open. Pictures showed how the ground had split open in and around Kathmandu. Pictures of roads with yawning cracks did not quite tell the story of the death and destruction in Nepal though. The real story, horrific and mind-numbing, emerged along with pictures of ancient temples and other heritage monuments reduced to rubble. Durbar Square looked as if it had been bombed. What the Maobadis could not achieve, nature’s fury had. The tragic remains of the ancient Darahara Tower, built by Nepal’s royal family as a watchtower in the 1800s, symbolised the death and destruction in Kathmandu valley. By Saturday evening, the death toll hovered at the 700 mark; it is bound to rise as reports come in from far-flung places. Historic monuments reduced to rubble will remain the leitmotif of Saturday’s disaster. But there’s more to the tragedy — hundreds, if not thousands, of homes destroyed, lives lost and women widowed, children orphaned. In desperately poor countries disasters leave a never ending trail of misery. With few resources, Nepal will be hardpressed to deal with the situation. This is where India comes in. We should pull out all stops and rush to Nepal’s aid. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has shown exemplary speed in summoning a meeting of senior officials and Ministers to get a rescue and relief mission going. Teams have been despatched. More men and material are on standby. But this is going to be a long mission. At the moment, the immediate concerns are threefold. First, rescue all survivors, including those still trapped in the rubble. Two, provide relief by way of food, water and temporary shelter. Three, prevent the outbreak of diseases. India has the resources and skills to undertake all three tasks. Once the initial work is done and assessments made, India should offer full assistance for reconstruction. Once again, we have both resources and expertise to undertake this herculean task. Nepal is closest to India culturally and civilisationally. A border separates the two countries but there is nothing that separates the two peoples. This is Nepal’s hour of grief, so also it is India’s hour of grief. India’s swift and wholehearted involvement is also necessary to prevent China from trying to use the tragedy to its advantage. The earthquake has devastated large parts of Tibet. Let China demonstrate its commitment to Tibet’s welfare by focussing on relief, rehabilitation and reconstruction in Lhasa and elsewhere. Second, there is absolutely no reason why Christian evangelists and associated frauds, rubbing their hands gleefully (as was evident from the messages they posted on social media within minutes of the disaster) at the prospect of soup kitchen and rice bowl conversions, should be allowed to even enter Nepal, leave alone harvest souls, at this moment. Last, though not the least, India must prevent Pakistan from using Nepal’s tragedy as a cover to pump in dubious Islamic charity funds and smuggle in ISI operatives. We do not want to return to the situation that prevailed in the late-1990s leading to the hijacking of IC814. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has expressed his grief. That is sufficient, thankyouverymuch. Nepal’s tragedy poses a challenge and an opportunity to India. The coming days will be a litmus test for our Government and our people. We must pass that test, collectively, unitedly. of any organisation that challenges its ideological space anywhere. It is threatened by all agitations organised around a rights-based approach which pushes religious identity into the background and foregrounds secular identities — such as landless or marginalised tribals. Those who promote any collective identity other than that of the “Hindu nation” are seen as enemies — they include trade unions, feminists, LGBTs (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender), communists, secularists, non-Hindu religious organisations, tribal rights activists, oustees of big projects, and non-RSS groups organising farmers and agricultural workers. They are seen to be creating conflict by bringing in extraneous identities to bear on what is essentially presumed to be a harmonious Hindu society — ignoring its caste and class stratifications. In its own extensive work with marginalised peoples, the RSS tries to draw them under the Hindu umbrella. In doing so, it must face the challenge of the fault lines created by “others” — the “enemies” of the Hindu nation and the political ideologies inimical to it. These other organisations bring social-economic indicators into the discussion to demand justice, equality. They do not hesitate to formulate demands as sectional interests based on social fault lines. The UPA government took social movements on board because it believed that this bridged the crisis of political representation. The BJP and Mr Modi on the other hand think that social movements are already represented in the party through its connections with the RSS NGOs. Appointments to government and quasi-government educational and cultural bodies are made from this pool of NGOs. This accounts for the difference in attitude of the UPA and the BJP towards civil society organisations. In a continuing ideological struggle for space in society, non-RSS NGOs are, therefore, discredited by them or even crushed by accusations that they discredit India internationally. However, choking their sources of funds, deriding them and eroding their legitimacy — as the BJP and Prime Minister Modi himself are trying to do — can only shrink the democratic space in society. India is not a “Hindu” society as imagined by the RSS and try as they might, the votaries of Hindutva do not represent the diverse identities with their myriad problems that make up this amazing democratic nation of India. times to resolve the differences with the state government as Mufti has been trying to appease the separatists from day one. Both Modi and Rajnath have been asserting that any lenience towards anti-national elements and terrorists will not be acceptable. Under the circumstances, Mufti has an unenviable task to keep his new found ally - the BJP - in good humour which is an imperative for his government to survive. This is an uneasy relationship which even the two allies have repeatedly admitted. The manner in which Rajnath pushed Mufti to re-arrest Masarat will only add to this unease. Though the PDP has rubbished allegations that the state government arrested Masarat following the Centre’s pressure, anger is seething on the streets of Srinagar against Mufti for ‘allowing’ New Delhi to ‘dictate’ terms to his government. People accuse the PDP patriarch of following his predecessor Omar Abdullah’s policy. Protesters on the streets of Srinagar allege that PDP and Mufti bowed before the BJP which wants to choke the voices of dissent in the Valley. Many parts of the state steeped in backwardness, the coalition government needs to take proper, effective and firm steps to focus on governance and ensure equitable share to all irrespective of caste, religion and region in the matter of rehabilitation and development. The two alliance partners cannot escape the accusations of indulging in shadow boxing over crucial issues. A semblance of normalcy had been achieved in the Kashmir Valley after a long toil by the security forces and local people who came in hordes to vote in the last year’s assembly elections despite boycott call by the separatists. Political parties of all hues need to refrain from building edifices of power over the sentiments of a community, region or religion. "Change the Bollywood" BY : ASHTOSH RAINA oday the bollywood has became very intersting in India ten out of seven person in India talk only about on bollywood films. Youth people makes a large majority to see films. Flims shows all the colours of society, but it has dark side also. I am saying that "untill 2005, films makes a great role in upliftment of people also on students. They shows such films that makes a person very kind, humble and respectful towards women and old people!! After 2005, the bollywood films changed their colour, they only today focus on western films in which "the girl's should be nude" they don't think that what will be the bad impact on "youth" who are tomorrow builder of nation. Today the youth takes very interest on nude films, he has lost his mind, that's why youth doesn't take interest in studies and social work. It is because of bollywood films. The rape rate is increasing day by day. Today, in bollywood films, the director only wants money, he has became too greedy to earn money that he shows such films in which youth focus more and buy tickets. For this he shows "pornomography films" (means girls naked films) thus he became rich and our society became worse. Today in our society, the girls feels insecure if she walks in the streets alone. she fears of rape, chain-snaching, or eve-teasing by boys. The boys were not bad, they became bad by seeing present films, you tell me that what film actor such as sunny leone or Imran Hashmi teaches us? Everyone knows what they show they also became greedy for money that's why they shows these films. They should be taken to jail especially the director who make these bad films or albums. laws should be make on such films. "Pornomography films" leads to social disorder. Today many criminal cases are of rapes. it is very good when our government takes immediate action and arrest those people who do rape but they should know that these rapes are grown from "pornomography films" yesterday ekta kapoor make a aggrement to those girls who want to come in their films that "girl shouldn't should say 'no' if she has been order to became nude" you tell me that why we focus on nude films what will we get from nude films? there are many sites in internet which shows nude films. We should oppose it. We should make discussions on this matter. Otherwise it will be too late. It can be minimized if censor board think over it. "Does it behove us that manual scavenging is still continuing in the country? I have emphasized that we must get rid of this blot in the 125th anniversary of Babasaheb Ambedkar. We will not tolerate a situation where any of the poor persons has to engage in manual scavenging," he said in his monthly 'Mann Ki Baat' programme. "We need the cooperation of the society. The government will have to carry out its responsibility. I need the support of people to fulfill this endeavour," he added. Modi said his government has decided to give land in Mumbai for building of a memorial for Ambedkar. The land was in dispute for several years, he said. Similarly in Delhi, an international centre in his name would be established where intellectuals from across the world would research his works and get to know his contributions better, Modi said, adding that the foundation stone of this complex has been laid after two decades. "What was not done in 20 years, we have pledged to do it in 20 months," he said. Invoking Ambedkar, the Prime Minister said the architect of the Indian Constitution, throughout his life, kept advocating the need for education of all. "But even today, education has not reached dalits, oppressed and deprived sections of the society, especially the girls," he said. "In the 125th birth anniversary year, let us resolve that the daughters of even the poorest of the poor will not remain uneducated in villages, cities or mohallas," he added. Relationship between Farmer Suicide Was AAP Drama 9-month pregnant woman India, South Africa deeply Which Turned Into Tragedy: RSS runs 5 k.m. in Karimnagar rooted in history: President Agencies New Delhi, Apr 26: Extending his greetings and felicitations to the government and people of South Africa on the eve of the country's freedom day on April 27, President Pranab Mukherjee on Sunday said the relationship between both nations is deeply rooted in history, and over the years, has evolved into a strategic partnership. "On behalf of the Government and the people of India and on my own behalf, it gives me great pleasure to extend to the friendly people of South Africa warm greetings and felicitations on the occasion of the Freedom Day of South Africa," President Mukherjee said in his message to South African President Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma. "The relationship between India and South Africa is deeply rooted in history, and over the years, has evolved into a strategic partnership, characterized by multi-faceted engagement covering a range of activities in the political, economic and cultural fields. Our co-operation under the IBSA and the BRICS forum adds even greater value and substance to our engagement," he added. President Mukherjee further said, "I am confident that in the coming years, we will further reinforce our bilateral cooperation for the mutual benefit of our two peoples." "Please accept, Excellency, my warm wishes for your personal health and well-being, as well as for the progress and prosperity of the friendly people of South Africa," he added. Agencies New Delhi, Apr 26: The RSS has alleged that farmer Gajendra Singh's suicide was a "drama" enacted by AAP which turned out to be a "tragedy", and advised the party to take right lessons from the incident. Calling AAP's recent farmer rally as one that touched the "lowest level" of politics, the RSS mouthpiece 'Organiser' has hit out at the party saying such "dirty" politics should be discard- ed. Challenging AAP's "party with a difference" tag, the piece argues that AAP has added to Indian politics an entertainment value that is unique and has gone to the extent of enacting a drama in the name of farmer's suicide. "The kind of entertainment value AAP has added to Indian politics is again unique. With 24X7 media glare, the anarchist formation used every space to catch attention. Some dramatics, either in the form of sloganeering or leadership gimmicks are always used in electoral politics. "From 'Garibi Hatao' to 'Acche Din' are catchy words that touch the cords of common voters. But what AAP has done in the name of farmers' rally is touching lowest level of politics. In another attempt of embarrassing the Centre, AAP tried to create a drama which turned out to be a tragedy," the editorial said. It further said that "for catching the public attention through media, instigating some supposed to be farmer to enact a suicide attempt and the person actually losing his life is dirty politics, which should be discarded outright." Written in the backdrop of farmer's suicide that shook the country, the article further goes on to question the genesis of AAP and asks, "Is AAP really a party with a difference". "The script, drama and presentation of this loose political formation are proving to be sensational but foreign to be part of India's democratic culture," the editorial said. The editorial goes on to argue against that difference, saying, the emergence of Aam Aadmi Party on India's political scene, many believed, was a dra- matic departure from the existing political culture. It said after its brief political stint in Delhi in 2013 and then its political face contesting from Varanasi, many started arguing that AAP is turning out to be like any other political party. "But AAP's comeback in the national capital with thumping majority and the aftermath shows the other way round,"it said. The article while seeking to defend BJP's policies in the wake of severe opposition to the land ordinance and other farm related issues by the Opposition, equally holds the Congress for pursuing policies that harmed agrarian interests. "The problem of Indian agriculture is systemic and cannot be linked merely to other land development policies. India's agricultural land is overburdened and was never boosted through innovation and investment. "The socialist pattern of philosophy of poverty started by the Congress and now dramatised by AAP can only derail the real development in agricultural sector. Through such attempt, AAP can only add entertainment value to politics but cannot make any substantial change," the article said. 23 journalists 1997 Uphaar fire: Victims' Five pipe bombs found in get Matri Shree families await closure of case Sree Padmanabha temple media awards Agencies NEW DELHI, Apr 26: Agencies New Delhi, Apr 26: Twenty-three journalists from print and electronic media were today conferred the Matri Shree awards for their contribution to the field of media. Members of Parliament Ramesh Bidhuri and Manoj Tiwari conferred the awards at a function here today. Sanjay Anand, Shahbaz Khan and Ajay Srivastava from the Press Trust of India are among the 23 journalists who were awarded the 40th Matri Shree Award. Among journalists who received the award include Shahnawaj Malik of Navbharat Times, Anrurag Mishra of Dainik Hindustan, Nemish Hemant of Dainik Jagaran and Pawan Kumar of Amar Ujala. Punjab Kesari's Aditya Narayan and Rashtiya Sahara's Ajay Nethani and Kapil Sharma of Aaj Tak channel are also among those who were given the award. Nearly 18 years after 59 cinegoers died of asphyxia in the massive fire that engulfed the Uphaar theatre here, victims' families are still waiting for judicial closure of the case. A bench of justices TS Thakur and Gyan Sudha Mishra (since retired), on March 5, 2014, had held real estate barons Sushil and Gopal Ansal guilty, but had differed on quantum of sentence to be awarded to them. It had concurred in finding that there was contemptuous disregard of civic laws on the part of Ansals that led to the tragedy as they were more interested in making money than ensuring safety of people. Justice Thakur concurred with the 2008 verdict of the Delhi High Court that had awarded one year jail terms to Sushil and Gopal Ansal. However, Justice Mishra reduced the jail term to already undergone by Sushil considering his age and enhanced the sentence of Gopal to two years. After that a threejudge bench headed by Chief Justice H L Dattu has to hear afresh and authoritatively decide the case. The matter came up for hearing on April 21, but was adjourned at the request of senior advocate L Nageshwar Rao, the counsel for Ansals. "Now we are worried about how many more adjournments they will seek before the matter is actually heard and the victims get the judicial closure," said Krishnamoorthy, Neelam President of Association of Victims of Uphaar Tragedy (AVUT). "Since the matter was not being listed, AVUT had filed three applications for early hearing. Finally, on January 22, the Chief Justice gave directions for listing the criminal appeal in April 2015," she said. The apex court has been hearing cross-appeals filed by CBI, AVUT and the Ansals challenging the Delhi High Court order. Fifty-nine people, trapped in the balcony of the theatre, died of asphyxia following the fire and over 100 people got injured in subsequent stampede on June 13, 1997 during the screening of "Border" movie. Contemplate about nation's problems: ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair advises students Agencies Varanasi, Apr 26: Former ISRO chairman G Madhavan Nair on Sunday advised the students to contemplate about the nation's problems and make efforts to address them along with acquiring knowledge. Addressing the 97th Convocation function of Banaras Hindu University here, Nair said, "merely acquiring knowledge should not be the goal of education." The education would not be fruitful until and unless it concerns for the betterment of the society, "which they (students) would return in the form of their quality services," Nair said. The youths are the assets of?the nation and they should prepare themselves to compete and face the global challenges. The students must "think, analyse and act" accordingly, the former chairman of Indian Space Research Organisation said. "All youths must contemplate about the problems of the nation and then analyse it and come up with innovative ideas to act against these problems and also make efforts in?removing them," Nair said. The education is the only tool that can decrease and remove the widen gaps between rich and the poor in the country, adding that affordable education must be imparted to all sections of the society. Kamarapu Laxmi, a resident of Bhagathnagar, clocked the record in the presence of two gynaecologists, district sports development officer and other dignitaries of the town. The organisers also deployed an ambulance and para-medical staff to meet any eventuality for this feat. After performing the record feat, Laxmi said that she was running for the last four years and it was nothing new. She called upon the pregnant women to take up exercise, yoga etc. instead of bed rest for normal delivery and a healthy baby. Telangana book of records editor M. "I am going to write a letter to Soniaji and seek an audience with her to know whether she has given her consent to state Congress leaders, especially Digvijay, to run a baseless and totally false campaign against me and my family members," Chouhan told reporters here. He said the "dirty politics and shallow campaign based on the false and fake allegations to sully my and my wife's image should stop." "Singh stands exposed as the Madhya Pradesh High Court has endorsed the Special Investigation Team's (SIT's) finding that a document submitted by a cyber expert against me as an evidence was indeed forged. Police packed all the five pipe bombs and were due to take these to an isolated place to defuse them. Steps have also begun for their forensic examination. The Kerala government recently sanctioned funds for cleaning the ponds that are associated with the famed temple. Incidentally, when the pond was being cleaned on Sunday, a secret door, believed to be linked to the main temple, was also found in the pond. Ever since the Supreme Court ordered for stock taking of the priceless treasures kept in the vaults in 2011, the security of the temple has been beefed up and the complex has been declared a highly sensitive area. MNS Chief Raj Thackeray today said the Shri Saibaba Sansthan Trust (SSST), which runs the famous Shirdi Saibaba temple, should be handed over to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) for its smooth working. Talking to reporters here during his tour to the temple town, Thackeray said the SSST of late has been in news for corruption and mismanagement caused to devotees. - "For past so many years, we are hearing about issues surroundings the Shirdi shrine. The trust (SSST) has been also facing corruption charges. Functioning of the Saibaba temple trust should be handed over to TTD trust as I have seen their way of functioning for so many years now and it is way much better and organised," the MNS leader said. The TTD manages famous Venkateswara temple at Tirumala in Andhra Pradesh's Chittoor district. He said there is still a dearth of proper basic amenities around the Saibaba temple and devotees have to suffer who come from all across the country and abroad. Backing Prime Minister Narendra Modi's plan to launch a scheme that would encourage temples to deposit their gold with banks in return for interest payments, he said the move will facilitate (temple) trusts to render better services. To a query on performance of the new BJP-led government in Maharashtra, Thackeray said the government has done some good works but has also made mistakes. "The new government is doing some good work but they have not done something very remarkable. People had pinned lot of expectations on them but are yet to experience 'acche din'," he added. On Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC), which is run by MNS, Thackeray said the development works undertaken by the civic body will bring a sea change in the city in the span of next three years. The UN Indian-Origin Scientist at MIT Wins USD 250,000 Heinz Award Agencies Washington, Apr 26: An Indian-origin scientist at MIT, who has developed artificial human microlivers for drug testing, has won a prestigious USD 250,000 Heinz award for her work in tissue engineering and disease detection. Sangeeta Bhatia at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has been named the recipient of the 2015 Heinz Award for Technology, the Economy, and Employment. The award includes an unrestricted prize of USD 250,000. The Heinz Awards annually recognise individuals for their extraordinary contributions to arts and humanities; environment; human condition; public policy; and technology, the economy, and employment. "This type of recognition helps to bring science into the public eye so that everyone can appreciate the dedication and innovation that is happening in laboratories all over the country," said Bhatia, the John and Dorothy Wilson J Professor of Health Sciences and Technology and Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Bhatia's team has pioneered the fabrication of artificial human microlivers, which are being used by many biopharmaceutical companies to test the toxicity of drug candidates. Bhatia is also using microlivers in the lab to model malaria infection and test drugs that can eradicate malaria parasites completely - even the parasite reservoirs that remain in the liver after a patient's symptoms subside. She hopes to eventually develop implantable liver tissue New Israel coalition near after negotiation breakthrough as a complement or substitute for whole-organ transplant. In her study of cancer and the tumour microenvironment, Bhatia's team has developed synthetic biomarkers that are paving the way for simple, low-cost cancer diagnostics. Their engineered nanoparticles interact with tumour proteins in the body and release hundreds of these biomarkers, which can be detected in urine. One application relies on a paper-strip urine test that can reveal the presence of cancer within minutes in mouse models. Bhatia is also recognised for her passion in promoting the advancement of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. While a graduate student at MIT, Bhatia helped start Keys to Empowering Youth (KEYs), a programme that engages middle school girls with science and engineering through hands-on activities and mentorship from MIT students. "I'm hopeful that the visibility associated with this award can inspire young girls by showing them what a rewarding profession - and life STEM can yield," Bhatia said. Bhatia will receive her award on May 13 at a ceremony in Pittsburgh. She will be honoured along with the Heinz Award recipients in the four other categories. Station Bakshi Nagar Gandhi Nagar Company Bagh Agencies Jerusalem, Apr 26: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was closer to forming a new coalition Sunday after the head of the far-right Jewish Home party relinquished his demand for the foreign ministry, political sources said. Netanyahu, whose Likud party won a surprise victory in a March 17 election, has until May 6 to piece together a new government, after receiving a 14-day extension last week. Despite a month of intensive negotiations, Netanyahu has not yet managed to form a coalition, expected to comprise six rightwing and religious parties and have 67 of parliament`s 120 seats. Jewish Home leader Naftali Bennett, currently economy minister, had been demanding the foreign ministry, held now by hardline nationalist Yisrael Beitenu leader Avidgor Lieberman. But over the weekend Bennett set his sights instead on the education ministry and formally asked Netanyahu for the portfolio on Saturday, sources close to the negotiations told AFP. Education is an especially important issue for the national religious constituency represented by Bennett`s party. Netanyahu was due to reply in the next few days. The sources said Bennett`s decision paved the way for his party, which dropped from 12 to eight seats in the recent vote, to receive three portfolios. Israeli media said Jewish Home would also be receiving the agriculture and culture ministries, while Lieberman -whose party dropped from 11 to six seats -- would remain foreign minister. Besides his Likud party with 30 seats, Jewish Home and Yisrael Beitenu, Netanyahu`s projected coalition is expected to include the ultra-Orthodox parties Shas and United Torah Judaism and the centre-right Kulanu. After the premier technical snoop wing under the Finance Ministry processed countrywide Suspicious Transaction Reports (STRs) it obtained from various financial institutions, the report said, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) also "detected proceeds of crime to the tune of Rs 20 crore and seized assets to the tune of Rs 17 crore." The report, accessed by PTI, said as a result of this electronic intelligence generated by FIU, the "I-T department seized assets worth Rs 163 crore and the Service Tax department sealed assets worth Rs 17 crore during the same period." Also, as part of the same action the ED registered as many as 105 fresh criminal FIRs under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) apart from its regular operations against money launderers and hawala operatives in the said time period. The total black money detected by FIU stands at Rs 7,848 crore during the last year, a senior Finmin official said who did not wish to be quoted. The huge amount of black money could be detected during 2013-14, the official said, as the FIU witnessed an about 100 per cent jump in receiving the STRs at 61,953 dossiers as compared to a mere 31,731 STRs received by it during 2012-13. The agency also received a total of 87,79,082 Cash Transaction Reports (CTRs), 3,01,804 Counterfeit Currency Reports (CCRs) and 80,616 NonProfit Organisation Transaction Reports (NTRs), the latest updated report also submitted to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) on black money, said. STR is defined as a transaction which gives rise to a reasonable suspicion that it may involve proceeds of a crime or appears to be made in circumstances of unjustified complexity or gives reasonable grounds to suspect that it may be linked to terrorist ac- tivities. CTR is fund movement of the value of more than Rs 10 lakh in one tranche or a series of transactions internally connected to each other in either Indian currency or foreign in the country's banking or any other channel. A CCR is amply clear from its name as it pertains to an instance of usage of fake currency in any bank by an entity while NTRs pertain to filing of dossiers by Non-Governmental and nonprofit organisations with regard to their economic operations. All banking, financial intermidiaries, insurance companies, payment system operators and capital market operatives are stipulated to submit the said reports to the FIU statutorily under money laundering laws. During the same period, the snoop body also sent 82 requests to its foreign counterparts after various law enforcement agencies in the country requested it to obtain information in order to take forward their respective probes in cases of black money. The SIT on black money, mandated to deal specifically on the cases of illegal funds of Indians stashed abroad, had asked the government to further enhance the capabilities of FIU to check the menace of criminal funds (PTI) New Delhi, April 26: The long-pending Bill on Goods and Services Tax (GST), moved in the Lok Sabha amid stiff resistance by several Opposition parties, would be taken up for consideration and passing Monday. The Constitution (122nd Amendment) Bill 2014 was moved on Friday by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley who had said it was a "win-win" measure for both the Centre and the states as he sought to allay the apprehensions of some state governments that they would lose revenue if GST was implemented. Members of Congress, led by Sonia Gandhi, along with those of the Left, TMC and NCP staged a walk out after their for referring the plea Constitution Amendment Bill to the Standing Committee was not accepted. AIADMK and BJD also opposed its consideration but did not walk out. The Opposition members had alleged that the government was "bull-dozing" and bringing the bill in "hush hush" manner and wanted more time to study the "new" legislation. The House had also witnessed an hourlong wrangling over the procedures between the ruling and the opposition sides, after which the Bill was taken up Speaker Sumitra when Mahajan ruled that it was an important legislation on which the Finance Minister can make introductory comments and a discussion can be taken up at a later date. Commending the Bill for consideration passage, and Jaitley had said "GST is going to lead to a win-win situation as far as the Centre and the states are concerned. It is going to up India's GDP. It is going to up India's revenue and therefore I commend GST Constitution Amendment Bill to the House for (consideration)". Seeking to assuage fears of states, he said the Centre and the states will have concurrent power to levy tax on goods and services. He said when Value Added Tax was introduced, states had demanded compensation for more than five years, but not a single state asked for compensation in the sixth year.(PTI) Railways in existential crisis but no stock market route: Suresh Prabhu New Delhi, April 26: Railways is facing an "existential crisis" because it was systematically ignored for long by favouring the road sector, Railways minister Suresh Prabhu said but ruled out the stock market route by making it a listed PSU like ONGC to raise funds. "Railways lost traffic to road. It is because you make investment three to four times higher in road than railways. You have systematically ignored rail favouring road. Now it has become an existential crisis for railways. "If you want to increase the share of traffic to rail from road, you have to invest more in rail," Prabhu said in an interview to PTI. The minister was responding to as to why despite the best efforts, Railways have failed to share the road traffic. He further added that railways cannot handle even if free goods transportation was al- lowed to increase the traffic share as it does not have the capacity. "For argument sake even if you decide to allow people to have free freight transportation, can railways handle it? Railways' ability to handle today is determined by the ability to carry. Where is the capacity to carry? So, therefore, you must make investment," he said. According to the latest CAG report on Railways, the Indian Railways was unable to meet its operational cost of passenger and other coach services and there was a loss of Rs 23,643 crore in the same during 2011-12. Asked about the suggestions that Railways should also be listed on the stock market to raise money like government has done in many other sectors including ONGC, the minister said, the national carrier has unique characteristic and it was not advisable to do so. Cristiano Ronaldo would be great anywhere, Lionel Messi wouldn't: Alex Ferguson London, April 26: Former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson on Sunday said Lionel Messi is purely a Barcelona player but believes Cristiano Ronaldo would be a success anywhere in the world. The Barcelona and Real Madrid forwards have won the last seven Ballon d'Or awards between them, marking the pair as the two best players of their generation and among the greatest to have ever played the game. "Ronaldo is tough. People say 'who is the player in the world' and plenty of people quite rightly say Messi. You can't dispute that opinion. But the thing about Ronaldo, Ronaldo could play for Millwall, Queens Park Rangers, Doncaster Rovers or anyone and he'd score a hat-trick. I'm not sure Messi could do it," Ferguson was quoted as saying by BBC. Ferguson, who managed Ronaldo for six years before the Portugal international left Old Trafford for the Santiago Bernabeu in 2009, has backed his former protégé as the more complete footballer. "Ronaldo's got two feet, he's quick, he's good in the air and he's brave, though Messi's brave too, of course. I just think Messi is a Barcelona player," the 73-year-old said. Ferguson also labelled the 30-year-old as the player who advanced the most under his tutelage over his 26 years in charge of United. "Ronaldo is the biggest improvement I ever had at Manchester United really because he came as a young skinny kid at 17. And yes, he had stuff such as diving which people ral gas ministry. ONGC is a corporate body. Railways is a department enterprise. Therefore, we cannot .....Think about that and it is not advisable also to think about it because railways have a very unique characteristic," Prabhu said. He said even if railways was segmented into divisions, the listing was not advisable. "It has social responsibility, commercial interest, it has to get resources from the budget. To create something like this at this particular time it may not be advisable," the minister added. Referring to the budget investment, Prabhu said "the budget has focused on these issues. Making sure that we put more and more money for investment and you will see over a period of time significant improvement in the rail-road ratio." He said railways will chart a new course shortly with the introduction of a new accounting system. "We are intro- ducing a system in railways. It is an accounting system, which will be able to clearly identify the points you are making. What is the cost we incur on every service? Whether any expenditure we incur on railways, does it result into desirable outcome that you intended and timeline you have committed to make that expenditure? "So budgeting, expenditure, output and the outcome. We have to make this properly define into so that to bring in the elements like this," Prabhu said. Asked about the Kaya Kalp council, he said "it is a complete different council. If you want to do business, getting business transformation and explore ideas not for just technologically alone, but also managerial ideas, saving money, improving efficiency, improving productivity all these ideas were important." These issues will be taken by the Council. Therefore, it is headed by Ratan Tata, who has successfully done business, Prabhu said, adding, "he is also very patriotic. The advantage is that he is no longer in business. So there is no conflict of interest." "The council also included representatives of our employees and unions. Because I feel the best people who can think of better ideas are people themselves involved in it as they deal with it on daily basis," Prabhu said.(PTI) N Srinivasan hired London agency to spy on BCCI members, claim reports New Delhi, April 26: According to the reports on Sunday, news are coming in that N Srinivasan spent close to Rs 14 crore to spy on other BCCI board members through a London agency. The BCCI are supposed to meet in Kolkata and discuss the role of N Srinivasan on the alleged matters. The BCCI is expected to launch an official enquiry into the matter that is expected to be headed by Anurag Thakur. The BCCI's Working Committee during its meeting in Kolkata on April 26 will discuss about Chennai Super Kings being valued at a meagre Rs 5 lakh by its owners, which has been objected by some IPL Governing Council members. It is learnt that Chennai Super Kings Private Limited after its demerger from its parent company India Cements have been valued at Rs 5 lakh as per documents that were handed over to IPL Governing Council. Subsequently, IPL COO Sundar Raman was asked a few questions by a few GC members about the "weird valuation" of the de-merger as they were paying an annual franchise fee of Rs 40 crore and also spent annually around Rs 60 plus crore as players' remuneration. The other question that was raised was Rs 25,000 being paid upfront to the BCCI for the sale of the franchise. (With Agency Inputs) Real Madrid can have Eden Hazard for 200m pounds, says Jose Mourinho London, April 26: Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has said that he is ready to hand over star striker Eden Hazard to Spanish team Real Madrid for a transfer fee of 200 million pounds. Hazard, 24, has scored 18 goals this season, helping Chelsea move to within six points of this year's English Premier League title. When Mourinho was asked if 100 million pounds would be enough for Chelsea to part with Belgian Hazard, Mourinho said yes provided Real Madrid gave that amount and one of its three best players. He was apparently making a reference to Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez who are widely regarded as Real Madrid's three best players. Mourinho was speaking ahead of Chelsea's clash with Arsenal on Sunday. He said that if Real Madrid wanted Hazard badly enough, their president Florentino Perez or CEO Jose Angel Sanchez could get on the phone and say they wanted him. BSE to auction govt bonds worth Rs 507 cr for FIIs on Monday New Delhi, April 26: Investment limits for government debt securities worth Rs 507 crore will be auctioned on the BSE on Monday. The auction would take place on leading stock exchange BSE's 'ebidxchange' platform from 1530 hrs to 1730 hrs, after close of normal market hours on April 27. "Live bidding session for allocation of debt investment limits for FII (Foreign Institutional Investors) and sub-accounts shall be conducted on Monday, April 27, 2015 on the Exchange's ebidxchange platform," the bourse said in a circular. The earlier auctions for government debt securities have always been over-subscribed multiple times, given the huge interest among foreign investors for these bonds. "Outlook is based on expectations. Rating upgrade would come when we believe that this expectations would be met...And we see that being reflected in macro economic parameters," Moody's Sovereign Rating Analyst Atsi Sheth told PTI. Earlier this month, Moody's had upgraded India's outlook to positive from stable, but retained the credit rating at the existing level at 'Baa3', just a notch above the junk grade. Moody's had said it would consider a rating upgrade after 12-18 months depending upon improvement in macroeconomic parameters. In order to attract private investment, Sheth said the regulatory conditions should be relaxed and tax environment should be made and predictable. "Making regulatory condition easier, ease of doing business, making tax environment certain and confidence of private sector in infrastructure... The private sector knows demand is there but government policies make it difficult to decide how much to invest, where to invest, how to structure investment... Those are the things (the government needs to focus upon)," she said. On the performance of the Narendra Modi government, Sheth said it was focusing on economic agenda and has refrained from increasing public expenditure to push growth. "Our expectation when the government came to power was that things would move slowly, we feel it has behaved the way we had expected it to. One thing we have seen is focusing on economic agenda and resisting urge to use fiscal stimulus. Those two would be positive," she said. (PTI) Punjab, Hyderabad try to get out of rut Agencies Mohali, April 26: Placed in the bottom half of the points table, both Kings XI and SunRisers Punjab Hyderabad would be looking to get out of the rut when they clash in an IPL cricket match in Mohali on Monday. While Punjab are lying last with four losses from six matches, Hyderabad are slightly ahead on net run rate despite having a similar win-loss count. Both sides come into the match after losing their respective previous encounters. For Punjab, particularly, it was a demoralising loss given that the side was restricted to 95 for 9 while chasing a stiff target of 193. This was their second lowest 20-over score in eight IPL seasons. The side’s batting, considered its strength on paper, has failed miserably and last night was the lowest it touched with the top half contributing a mere 49 runs to the total in a stiff chase. The likes of Virender Sehwag, David Miller, Shaun Marsh and Glenn Maxwell have not managed to make the kind of impact they were expected to ahead of the tournament. Maxwell, in fact, was dropped on Saturday as skipper George Bailey returned to the side but he too came a cropper in the face of pressure created by CSK bowlers, especially the spin duo of R. Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja who shared five wickets between them. Punjab’s bowlers too have been a huge letdown with pace spearhead Mitchell Johnson being the biggest flop. On Saturday night, he conceded 40 runs in his four overs and failed to clinch a single wicket. Hyderabad, on the other hand, has similar concerns to deal with. Their batting is relying heavily on skipper David Warner and opener Shikhar Dhawan and even though both have done reasonably well so far, lack of support in the middle order has made them ineffective. The bowling was markedly better in the previous match with both pace spearhead Dale Steyn and Trent Boult delivering and they would look to improve in the coming matches. JKRA general secretary BCCI authorise Dalmiya, Thakur to identify coach, support staff for Team India denies charges GOF Staff Reporter JAMMU, April 26: General secretary of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifle Association (JKRA) today denied the allegations levelled by members, including senior vice president, KS Jamwal with regard to financial irregularities. In a written statement issued here today, general secretary, without saying anything about ‘no confidence motion’ moved by the governing body in its meeting held yesterday, termed the allegations as malicious campaign to tarnish his image. “This is a malice campaign against me by some professional violators of GAD orders and State Sports Council guidelines having their vested inter- ests in the J&K Rifle Association. These people are violating the SRO-164 issued by the GAD and guidelines and code issued by the Sports Council and Union Sports Ministry on the age and tenure row for the sports bodies and federations, including J&K Olympic Association,” said the general secretary. With regard to financial irregularities he mentioned that accounts for the year 2009-10, 2010, 2011, 2011-12 (duly passed by the then president of the J&K Rifle Association) and also for the year 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15 duly audited by the Charted Accountant to the senior vice president, KS Jamwal on April 24. So, there was no question of the irregularities in the JKRA accounts. New Delhi, April 26: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in its working Committee meeting on Sunday have authorised Jagmohan Dalmiya and Anurag Thakur to identify a coach and support staff for the team. They have also shown a desire in appointing legendary trio of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid as advisor’s on all cricket-related matters. The BCCI has decided to seek the approval of the trio to advise them on all important cricketing matters including the appointment of national coach. Earlier in the month, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid were being seen as candidates to replace Duncan Fletcher as the next coach of Team India. But their possible appointment as advisors might mean that they are no long in contention for the top job. There were other matters on the working committee's agenda as well, such as the sale of Chennai Super Kings. The BCCI however, have not come to a conclusion on the matter to ratify the de-merger of the CSK from India Cements as of now. The Board wants more legal opinion on this matter before giving it its stamp of approval. Earlier, the BCCI were expected to reject the previous regime's approval of India Cements Limited's proposal to transfer the control of CSK to a trust for just Rs 5 lakh in a bid to de link Srinivasan from the franchise to comply with a Supreme Court order. BCCI also paid homage to the departed young cricketers from Bengal, Mr. Ankit Keshri, Mr. Gaurav Kumar of Jharkhand and the unfortunate victims of the earthquake which devastated Nepal and India. The Working Committee of the BCCI authorised Jagmohan Dalmiya to constitute a cricket advisory committee comprising of prominent former cricketers. Just 1-2 alcoholic drinks per day may cause liver disease Agencies Washington, Apr 26: A new study has linked drinking just 1 or 2 alcoholic drinks per day to liver disease. The new worldwide study presented at The International Liver Congress 2015 has shown the significant influence of daily drinking on cirrhosis burden. New data shows that the cirrhosis burden caused by alcohol increased by 11.13 percent when moving from the moderate to heavy daily drinking (up to one drink/day for women; two drinks/day for men) classification. Most studies assessing the prevalence of alcohol abuse as a risk factor for alcoholic cirrhosis focus on total annual amount drunk per person, but the researchers highlight that clinical studies suggest that it is a high daily consumption which is the strongest predictor of alcoholic cirrhosis. This new research concluded that heavy daily drinkers most significantly and independently influence a country's cirrhosis burden. According to the World Health Organization's Global Status Report on Alcohol and Health, around 6 percent of global deaths are caused by drinking alcohol, the majority from alcoholic cirrhosis, scarring of the liver as a result of continuous, long-term liver damage. Half of all cases of cirrhosis are caused by alcohol. ITC, which operates a subsidiary in Nepal, did not comment on the impact of earthquake on its operations in Nepal. However, an official said that there was no damage to the company's assets in the Himalayan nation. ITC's subsidiary in Nepal, Surya Nepal Private Ltd (SNPL), is an Indo-Nepal-UK joint venture and is the largest private sector enterprise in Nepal. SNPL is engaged in the business of cigarettes, safety matches and readymade garments in Nepal with a total turnover of over USD 175 million. Indonesia defiant as UN leads condemnation of looming executions Agencies Jakarta, Apr 26: Indonesia on Sunday signalled it was determined to push ahead with the execution of eight foreign drug convicts, despite a growing wave of global condemnation led by United Nations chief Ban Ki-moon. Authorities on Saturday gave formal notice to the eight - from Australia, Brazil, Nigeria and the Philippines -that they would be executed by firing squad imminently, along with an Indonesian prisoner. However, a Frenchman also on death row for drug-related crimes was granted a temporary reprieve after Paris stepped up pressure on Jakarta. The group have been moved to the high-security prison island of Nusakambangan, where Indonesia puts condemned prisoners to death, and Jakarta says the executions could be as early as Tuesday, although no official date has been set. The convicts recently lost appeals for mercy to President Joko Widodo, who has taken a hard line against drug traffickers and refused to back down on the executions despite mounting international criticism. The UN`s Ban added his voice to appeals for the convicts to be spared. "The Secretary General urges President Joko Widodo to urgently consider declaring a moratorium on capital punishment in Indonesia, with a view toward abolition," a spokesman for Ban said. Australia, which has mounted a sustained diplomatic campaign to save its two citi- zens in the group, also renewed appeals following Saturday`s news. "Nothing can be gained and much will be lost if these two young Australians are executed," said Foreign Minister Julie Bishop. "I again respectfully call on the president of Indonesia to reconsider his refusal to grant clemency. It is not too late for a change of heart." France has stepped up pressure on Jakarta in recent days, with President Francois Hollande warning of "consequences" if its citizen, Serge Atlaoui, is put to death. The warning came shortly before it was announced that Atlaoui had won a temporary reprieve to allow him to pursue a further legal appeal. Brazil vowed to press Indonesia not to execute the Brazilian man among the group, Rodrigo Gularte, for humanitarian reasons, saying that he suffers from schizophrenia. Despite the appeals, Indonesia has shown little sign that it is willing to back down and the foreign ministry indicated Sunday that Ban`s statement would not change their plans. "We note the statement by the UN but we also note that there was no similar statement made when recently two Indonesians were executed," ministry spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir told AFP, referring to recent executions of Indonesian domestic workers in Saudi Arabia. Executions were carried out recently "by other countries and we did not see any statement made by the UN," he added. The executions have been delayed for weeks, with Indonesia coming close to carrying them out in February, but then agreeing to let final legal appeals be resolved following an international outcry. However Saturday`s announcement signals they are finally going ahead. While Jakarta has not officially announced a date, lawyers for two of the convicts - the Filipina and one of the Nigerians -- said they had been informed it would be on Tuesday. Authorities have said that they are waiting on the outcome of the appeal by the sole Indonesian in the group, which could come as early as Monday. Relatives of the condemned prisoners have been rushing to Cilacap, the town that serves as the gateway to Nusakambangan, as authorities informed the death row convicts they would face the firing squad soon. The family of the Australians, heroin traffickers Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, arrived Saturday to visit the men, crossing over to Nusakambangan accompanied by embassy officials. Relatives of Filipina Mary Jane Veloso, including her sons aged six and 12, visited her Saturday and again on Sunday. Philippine Vice President Jejomar Binay, who has spearheaded efforts to save Veloso, urged his country not to "lose hope" Sunday, noting her legal team had filed a second petition with Indonesia`s Supreme Court. "We will continue to use all the avenues available to us," he said. Three of the African traffickers are confirmed as being from Nigeria. However it is not clear whether the fourth holds Ghanaian or Nigerian nationality. Indonesia has some of the toughest anti-drugs laws in the world. In January, Jakarta executed six drug convicts, including five foreigners, sparking international outrage. Tourism ministry officials here estimate that at least 1,000 climbers, including about 400 foreigners, had been at the base camp when Nepal's worst earthquake in 80 years yesterday noon triggered the avalanche on Everest. The quake also shook neighbouring India and China. The death toll has crossed 2,200-mark, of which nearly 1,000 are reported killed in Kathmandu valley alone, according to the Home Ministry. The avalanche began on Mount Kumori, a 7,000-meter-high mountain just a few miles from Everest, and gained strength as it headed down-wards towards the base camp, flattening at least 30 tents. An avalanche in April last year just above the base camp of Everest had killed 16 Sherpa guides. Mount Everest, the world's highest peak at 8,848 metre, is scaled by hundreds of climbers every year. "Our focus will be to rescue as many people alive as possible." He said the relief and rehabilitation work after the rescue operations will go on for a long time. Sharing his pain over a series of natural calamities hitting the region in the recent past including yesterday's quake in Nepal, Modi said he was anguished and did not feel like going ahead with his radio address today. Aim to be first to respond to crises in neighbourhood: Parrikar New Delhi, April 26: As India launched ‘Operation Maitri’ to support the quake-relief efforts in Nepal, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar today said that the aim of the government is to be the first to respond to any crisis in the neighbourhood and to do so in a “quick span of time”. He said that the country has always helped other nations in times of crisis and the difference now with the Narendra Modi government at the helm was that such efforts were initiated “very swiftly”. Parrikar said that while over 500 Indians have been evacuated so far from Nepal, another 1,500 would be brought back today via civil and Indian Air Force aircraft. “India is a large country in the neighbourhood and we have responded in a quick span of time to a neighbouring country’s need, be it Nepal or the Maldives,” he said, adding that the government aims to be the first responder. Noting that India has always helped other countries, Parrikar said that “the difference this time is that there is a new government here and rescue efforts were initiated very swiftly”. Interacting with journalists at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on the side- lines of a Defence Investiture Ceremony, the minister underlined that the first few hours are the most important in rescue operations. Asked if strategic reasons had seen India rushing aid to Nepal in such a big way, he said, “It is more than strategic. India shares long cultural and family ties with Nepal.
