‘No plans to create exclusive

ANIL ANAND
New Delhi, May 5: In the
wake of massive outcry
over the issue, the Government of India Tuesday
said it has no plans to
create separate townships
for migrant Kashmiri
Pandits in the Valley. The
Centre’s remarks come
days after Union Home
Minister Rajnath Singh
claimed the Chief Minister
Mufti Muhammad Sayeed
assured to earmark 400
kanals of land in Kashmir
for the purpose.
In reply to a relevant
question in Lok Sabha on
Tuesday, Minister of State
for Home Affairs Haribhai
Parathibhai Chaudhary
said there was “no proposal to create separate zones
exclusively for Kashmiri
Pandits.”

Police foil traders’ march to Civil Secretariat and detain KTMF president and members
during a rally against “government’s failure” to rehabilitate Kashmir’s flood-hit
businessmen, in Srinagar on Tuesday. The KTMF had called for Valley-wide shutdown to

to create separate zones
exclusively for the Kashmiri pandits in the state
of Jammu and Kashmir is
under consideration,” the
Minister replied.
This puts to rest the
controversy surrounding
recent reports that government was planning
to build composite townships for Kashmir pandits
in the Valley.

Srinagar, May 5: Police
Tuesday cane-charged hundreds of traders here who hit
the streets in protest against
the J&K government’s “failure” to rehabilitate the Valley’s business community
after the devastating floods
in September last year. The
traders—under the banner
of Kashmir Traders and
Manufacturers Federation
(KTMF) —had called for
daylong shutdown over the
issue. Several traders were
injured in the police action,
witnesses said.
Shops and business establishments across the Valley
remained closed, but public
t r a n sp or t —wh ich wa s
exempted from the strike—
plied normally.
Thousands of traders
assembled at Budshah
Chowk here and held a demonstration. They later tried
to march towards the Civil
Secretariat—the highest
seat of governance which
opened in the summer
capital on Tuesday after
operating for six months in
Jammu.

Srinagar, May 5: J&K Chief Minister Mufti Muhammad Sayeed
Tuesday said he has not given up
his idea of “battle of ideologies” to
provide political space to separatists “but some positions are unacceptable.”
“It (battle of ideologies) is there.
It is an evolutionary process and
my agenda won’t go anywhere. But
governance is the first priority of
my Government which is faced
with challenges to rehabilitate
flood victims and rebuild infrastructure,” Sayeed said.

Govt offices
open in Srinagar
Srinagar, May 5: As part of
biannual Durbar Move Move
practice, Jammu and Kashmir
government Tuesday started
functioning from here after
shiing from the winter capital Jammu.
Raj Bhavan, Civil Secretariat
and other offices, which had
closed in Jammu on April 24,
were opened here as per the
darbar move, a 140-year-old
practice under which government functions six months
each in the two capitals.
Chief Minister Mui Muhammad Sayeed inspected the traditional guard of honour in the
Civil Secretariat premises to
mark the opening of the offices.
Sayeed was welcomed by
his cabinet colleagues and
senior civil administration and
police officials.

It is worst dispensation for
Kashmir and its people,” he
alleged.
Khan said: “Our protest was peaceful. We are
demanding our rights and
protesting against the government’s failure to rehabilitate f lood-hit traders
who lost everything to the
September 2014 floods. But
instead of mitigating the sufferings of victims, the police
action rubbed salt into their
wounds,” he said.
Khan said some BJP and
PDP “agents” were “trying
to disrupt peaceful protests
to meet their nefarious
designs.”
The KTMF also condemned the police action on
media-persons who were discharging their professional
duties.
Khan said the government’s seriousness towards
flood victims can be gauged
from the fact that while it
should be busy in their rehabilitation, its top brass is
“dating Bollywood actors.”
“J&K’s Finance Minister
who seems least interested in
providing compensation to
traders only knows the economy of improving Bollywood
relations. But if Bollywood
is his interest, he should not
have befooled people that
the PDP-BJP alliance would
bring economic package for
Kashmir,” Khan said.
“The way government
wants to scuttle the voice
of flood victims, it seems
we are heading towards
‘Muhammad Shah Rangeela regime’ whose concern
was only entertainment at
the cost of public miseries,”
Khan said.
