BJP Cooperative Cell extends support to Lal Singh NL Correspondent Jammu Tawi | March | 19 Reacting over the allegations leveled against the Health Minister Ch. Lal Singh by one doctor on March 9, BJP Cooperative Cell District President S Nirmal Singh Mehta said that it to be a counter to the efforts being made by the Minister only to enforce discipline in the medical services and to instil the confidence of the public. Mehta said that the incident was just to stand by all constructive efforts being made by Health Minister to improve medicare facilities and enforce discipline, which is in the interest of the public and ailing humanity. He added that the directive given by the minister in an official function to the doctor to wear apron of which the offence has been taken by the concerned doctor is highly objectionable and contrary to service norms. He also said, in J&K also, there have been large scale irregularities in the medical services and the confidence of the patients on the doctor, particularly in government sector, gets shaken repeatedly because of this. Ch. Lal Singh is known for his honesty and uprighteousness and his extra endeavour to provide best patient care in the medical institutes in the state, particularly in government sector. He is streamlining the medical service sector to provide state of art services to the patients and to bring best medicare at the doorsteps of the needy. He also reiterated that the party stands by Lal Singh as he is working round the clock to improve medicare facilities, which is not being digested by some vested interests. This has been done on account of the extreme hardship faced by the local people on account of aggressive conduct of Pak army and its response by the Indian security forces. Though the areas near International border similarly suffer on the account of the aggressive conduct of Pak army, yet said areas (IB) have not been declared as RBA thereby denying these people hardship amelioration measures on the pattern of areas of LOC. Leaders from across the world have expressed horror over the barbaric act and have condemned it in the strongest possible manner. A spokesman of the Pakistan Taliban, Ahsanullah Ahsan, has claimed responsibility with a promise of “more such attacks.” Pakistan’s Interior Minister Chaudhary Nisar Ali has termed the act a reflection of the “frustration of the Taliban in the face of the stepped-up military operations against them.” A good question here would be - why is the Taliban giving vent to its “frustration” by killing innocent minorities of Pakistan who have no role to play in the ongoing anti military operations against the militant group in Pakistan? If the Taliban are actually the men that they profess to be then they should have targeted any one of the many military installations Jaibans Singh in Lahore! The Pakistan Taliban spokesperson, further stated, "We promise that until an Islamic system is put into place in Pakistan such attacks will continue. If Pakistan's rulers think they can stop us, they should try to do so." What becomes evident from this statement is the diabolic agenda of converting the nation into an Islamic state by killing all minorities. More disturbing is the realisation that various instruments of state are leaving the atrocity unchecked and unpunished and thus becoming a party to it. Within the ambit of this immoral and wicked onslaught against the minorities, the Christian community is being specifically targeted by the Taliban for the last many years. There is evidence to prove that the Government of Pakistan has a role to play in this unholy plan. The bombers were stopped at the doors of the churches not by personnel of the Lahore police, but by civilian sentries posted by the community itself. This precaution brought down the death toll drastically. Had the bombers blown themselves up within the premises of the churches as was their intention, the death toll would have been unimaginable. The government would have been aware that there is a huge gathering in the churches every Sunday, why then, did it not provide adequate " Muslims of sects other than the predominant Sunnis are being blatantly persecuted. Sections 298-B and 298-C of the Pakistan Panel Code outlaws Ahmadis from calling their place of worship a masjid, claiming to be Muslims or preaching their faith to others. In September, 2013, the Sialkot police tore down the minarets of an Ahmadi place of worship simply because a fundamentalist cleric gave a call that the building resembled a mosque. During Eid al-Adha on October, 16, 2013, Ahmadis in Lahore were stopped from offering Qurbani (sacrifice). As a community, Ahmadis are blatantly being denied their religious identity in Pakistan. security? In August 2012, Rimsha Masih, a 11 year old Pakistani Christian girl was arrested under the infamous Blasphemy Law on allegations of having desecrated the Holy Quran. The arrest was allowed despite scant evidence and with utter disregard to her being a minor, suffering from Downs Syndrome. The hapless family ultimately migrated to Canada to escape horrible persecution. In November, 2014, a pregnant Christian woman, Shama Bibi, was beaten to death for allegedly desecrating the Holy Koran and then thrown into the furnace of a brick kiln; her husband was thrown in even while he was alive. The government has consistently been a mute witness to such atrocities. It simply raises its hands and expresses inability to deal with the situation. As a result, the militants are gaining confidence and security threshold is hitting rock bottom. At the time of partition, Pakistan had 11 to 12 percent Hindu/Sikh population. When considered in terms of the existing population levels of the country, the present strength of the Hindu/Sikh community should be around one crore fifty lakhs. On ground, however, it is a miniscule thirty lakhs which is barely 1.5 percent of the population. One crore thirty lakh people have vanished into thin air. According to the Pakistan Hindu Council, about 20 cases of kidnapping of Hindu girls above 15 years of age are reported every month in Karachi alone. If the families of such girls approach the courts, hundreds of people gather outside and shout “Allah-o-Akbar”; even the judges get intimidated. Faced with such terrible conditions, the minority communities of Pakistan are making a beeline for India. The most horrifying characteristic of this exodus is that Pakistan is covertly facilitating the same. There are reports to suggest that certain outposts in the Pakistani side of the India-Pakistan border, especially so in the Rajasthan sector, have been kept vacant deliberately to facilitate the movement of Pakistani Hindus, Sikhs and Christians into India. Muslims of sects other than the predominant Sunnis are being blatantly persecuted. At the time of partition, the vision of the creator of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, was of a nation that would adopt secularism to accommodate its historically multi-religious and culturally diverse population. The Hindu and Sikh families that chose to stay back were assured of security and basic rights equal to those of the majority community. Sadly, what has happened is at total variance to that vision. The assertions of the Pakistan Government of being resolute in fighting against terror fall apart when the likes of Zaki-ur-Rehman and Hafiz Saeed are allowed to freely direct terrorist activity against India and propagate virulent anti-Islam propaganda. Such propaganda may be directed against India but it is harming the religious fabric of the country itself. Today, the very existence of all non Sunni Muslim communities is under threat in Pakistan. It would be best for the Government of Pakistan to realise that in matters as serious as terrorism and religious fundamentalism running with the Hares and hunting with the hounds is simply not feasible. Sat Sri Akal Britain: British Army to soon raise a Sikh Regiment nlike the sometimes cacophonic and animated parliamentary sessions in India, China’s legislative sessions are orderly, although most of the time these are predictable and decisions arrived at long before Parliament meets. Thousands of proposals are discussed in small batches of ‘people’s deputies’ and decisions taken in China. China had just concluded two major sessions -- the law-making National People’s Congress and the advisory group China People’s Political Consultative Conference meeting from March 3 to 1. The highlights were the popularising of a new catch-phrase ‘Four Comprehensives’, basically alluding to economic development, instituting rule of law and party governance issues. Premier Li Keqiang submitted the work report on March 5 highlighting his government’s performance in the last one year and the challenges ahead in various fields. Compared to the other work reports by his predecessors, Li spoke more frankly about the mounting challenges faced by the country. Li was also precise and crisp in rattling figures with one fourth of the report outlining the past years report card, while three-fourths of the report outlining what he intends to do this year. Premier Li started by suggesting that 2014 was ‘complicated and challenging’ with the regional and international economic situation still attempting recovery in the aftermath of the debilitating global financial crisis in 2008. Li also stated that the country is facing ‘mounting downward economic pressure’ and that the country’s economic model still remains ‘inefficient’ and still at the ‘preliminary stage of socialism’. Firstly, Premier Li stated that China had maintained 7.4 per cent economic growth --the largest in the world today. However, for a country which witnessed double digit growth rates in the last two decades, scaling down of the growth rates meant unemployment and social crisis that the Communist Party could hardly afford. This ‘new normal’ growth rates -- fixed at 7 per cent for 2015 -- has been a dampener, although after the sessions, the stocks jumped to a five year high. The International Monetary Fund had scaled down its estimates to China by 6.8 per cent for 2015, further reducing this to 6.4 per cent for 2016. One of the main factors in the downward slide in the growth rates are bad loans extended by the state-owned banks, mounting debt and flight of capital. For instance, McKinsey reports suggest that China’s overall debt increased to 282 per cent of the GDP, reaching over $28 trillion in 2014 from $7 trillion in 2007. The local government’s debt had reached more than $1.7 trillion -although 70 per cent of these are investments in the infrastructure projects. Also, the airport seizures in the United States of suitcase loaded cash wads or real estate investments in Canada and Australia are all traced to fleeing Chinese. Secondly, the grain output had reached 605 million tons, a slight increase over the last decades stagnant grain output of over 500 million tons. Nevertheless, China’s agricultural sector had been suffering for several decades with falling investments, indirect taxes and growing global integration pressures after the country joint the World Trade Organisation in late 2000. Previously, China had abolished various taxes to uplift ‘san nong’ problems (that afflicted farmers, agriculture and villages). Yet the agricultural sector is on a downhill slide, with cadres encroaching on fertile land. Thirdly, to prepare for the ‘high liberalisation’ trade regime, China is expanding the reform efforts to make the cash-rich state owned enterprises efficient; establish free trade zones in Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangdong and Fujian provinces; and increase incentives for inward and outward FDI flows (with China receiving over $120 billion and investing over $100 billion abroad). This is to place China at the higher bargaining position in the proposed Trans-Pacific partnership era. Fifthly, as a panacea for countering the trend of declining exports, enhancing domestic consumption and expanding sustainable growth rates, the 12th Five Year Plan icon of innovation -- the Zhongguancun IT model was expanded to other parts of the country. Premier Li cited the jet aircraft development, lunar exploration and super-computing in this regard, although some Chinese argue that since Song Dynasty, China’s track record on innovation had been dismal. Sixthly, Premier Li cited achievements in the diplomatic sphere of hosting the CICA and APEC meetings, ‘good neighbourhood’ policy and the flag-ship programmes of the Silk Road and Asian Infrastructure Development Bank. Li stated, China had been ‘writing international rules’. Seventhly, China kept pace with the last two decades of increasing the defence allocations by outlining $142 billion for this sector in order to continue to build ‘a solid national defence and strong armed forces’. While the actual allocations could be more than $200 billion, the current 10 per cent increase is above the national growth rates with the neighbours expressing concerns. Also, China became the third largest exporter of arms, after the US and Russia, expanding its exports by 143 per cent between 2010 and 2014, according to estimates. Eighthly, Premier Li vowed to clean up the deteriorating environmental situation in the country in general and in Beijing in particular even as the documentary ‘Under the Dome’ took the thunder away from these two sessions -- reportedly watched by several millions in China. Ninthly, efforts to counter corruption had been cited by the premier. Anti-corruption measures, as cited by Premier Li as fighting ‘formalism, bureaucratism, hedonism, and extravagance’ had ensured -- at least in the open -- that late night karaoke performances, bribe-giving and taking and other practices prevalent so far since the reform programme had been initiated since the late 1970s. Nevertheless, while several thousand cadres, military officials and others were investigated for ‘disciplinary violations’, political rivals were mainly targeted in this drive. Finally, while the previous work reports a decade ago highlighted ‘mass incidents’ --citing mounting public protests across the country, this work report is silent on this issue, even though survey reports of People’s University and Qinghua University have cited growing income inequalities and pegged such protests at more than 200,000 a year. Also, casting shadow on the ‘two sessions’ is the recent stand-off on Hong Kong, where protestors last year had demonstrated for autonomy and the right to choose their chief executive. PAGE Shankar Roychowdhury India, too, will have some concerns about the Sikh Regiment of the British Army, and the possibility of linkages developing between its rank and file, and the radical British Khalistani community in Britain, entrenched in the local gurdwara politics of London’s South Hall, which undoubtedly influences opinion in the British Sikh community. R eports in the British media indicate that a minister in the British government, “speaking on the sidelines”, touched upon a proposal under consideration in the British Army to raise a Sikh Regiment. The Indian Army is, of course, proud of having a Sikh Regiment (of 19 battalions), with a history going all the way back to the 19th century. The regiment has a proud record of valour, both pre- and post-Independence (including two winners of the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest gallantry award). It can be reasonably assumed that proposed British Sikh Regiment would be basically of the same stock, raised from the manpower pool of the Sikh community domiciled in Britain, sometimes referred to as “British Sikhs”, all presumably British citizens and permanent residents of that country. A large number of Sikhs migrated mainly to Western countries like England, the United States, Canada, Australia, and other Commonwealth countries while many Sikhs living abroad have close family connections back home in India. The distinctive trademark turbans and unshorn tresses and beards are no longer novelties abroad, but their presence in the armed forces of their adopted countries has not been in proportions to their numbers. The aim of the British government in announcing the proposal of creating a Sikh Regiment in the British Army at this juncture could be twofold. Firstly, the British Army is trying to make up for the manpower shortage it has been facing by mobilising recruits from a distinctive British ethnic minority with a historic tradition of soldiering for the British Empire. The British Army itself has become quite unattractive as a prospective employment for the present generation of British youth. Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, the British government wants to use the new regiment to tap into the political potential of British Sikh votebank ahead of the next British general elections, imminent in 2015. In the process, the British government might also revisit a somewhat parallel experience of recruitment of Gurkhas into the Gurkha Brigade of the British Army created postIndependence, by a Tripartite Treaty between India, Britain and Nepal regarding the future of the Gurkha Rifles of the erstwhile British Indian Army. The Gurkha Brigade experiment has dwindled to two British Gurkha infantry battalions, rotating between Hong Kong, later Brunei after the Chinese takeover, and the United Kingdom. The British Sikh Regiment will possibly remain an experimental prototype, until its impact on the milieu of a multi-racial Britain can be adequately assessed. Britain is facing “football crowd racism” and gang clashes involving immigrant communi-ties. Also, there is the increase of Islamic fundamentalism in a radicalised British-Pakistani community as fighters against the West, who vociferously support and actively contribute to the ideology of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, Al Qaeda, and international jihad, in Syria, Iraq and West Asia. The British Army itself has been restrained by an environment of economy, and compelled to downsize and disband or amalgamate many of its cherished historic regiments with long traditions of service to the “Crown and Country” from the times of Waterloo and the Peninsular War, right down to the Cold War and the war on terror. The present British Army could not be a very happy one. India, too, will have some concerns about the Sikh Regiment of the British Army, and the possibility of linkages developing between its rank and file, and the radical British Khalistani community in Britain, entrenched in the local gurdwara politics of London’s South Hall, which undoubtedly influences opinion in the British Sikh community. An extreme of this was the knife attack in London by two Sikhs on retired Lt. Gen. K.S. “Bul Bul” Brar of the Indian Army, a decorated war hero of Bangladesh, while he was walking with his wife during a private visit to Britain. As is widely known, Maj. Gen. Brar had been the Indian Army divisional commander during Operation Bluestar in 1984, tasked to clear the Golden Temple in Amritsar of the terrorists who had taken up fortified positions. For the record, the task had been one of the severest tests faced by the Indian Army since Independence, which was successfully completed and with honour. If the British Sikh Regiment is created, it will be incumbent for the British government to remain alert to the possibilities of Khalistani sympathisers attempting to contact its ranks, in the same manner as did sympathisers of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) the British Army. The potential for mischief does exist here, and the Indian and British governments will have to devise methods to neutralise it. Meanwhile, a hearty “Sat Sri Akal” to the British Sikh Regiment from their country cousins here at home! The NORTHLINES 7 NATIONAL www.thenorthlines.com JAMMU | FRIDAY | MARCH 20 | 2015 will not do anything against If Pak stops aiding terror outfits, South Govtfarmers' interests: Gadkari Asian security will improve: Rajnath Agencies New Delhi, Mar 19 Agencies Jaipur, Mar 19 Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today asked Pakistan to "seriously rethink" its strategy of using terrorism as an instrument of proxy war, saying this will "significantly" improve the security situation in South Asia besides being in its own national interest. Inaugurating an International Counter-Terrorism Conference, Singh said Pakistan should understand that there are no good or bad terrorists. "It is unfortunate that even after paying such a heavy cost for itself, Pakistan and its associates find it difficult to understand that there are no good terrorists and bad terrorists," he said, noting that the source of most terrorist activity in India lies across our borders. Singh said Pakistan should "seriously rethink its strategy of using terrorism as an instrument of proxy war, since this would be in her own national interest." "Differentiating terrorists into good and bad categories has failed miserably. If the ISI and the Pakistan Army stops their support to certain terror outfits, I have no hesitation in saying that the security situation in South Asia will improve significantly," he said. "India has been a victim of cross-border terrorism for the last several decades. Terrorist organisations like Lashkar-eTaiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad patronised by those across the border, have inflicted several acts of terror on the Indian soil. There are several instances of such proxies being used in other parts of the world," he said. Speaking about the changing face of terrorism in the present world, Singh expressed concern over the increasing possibility and opportunity to use available technology and cyberspace in a Anna Hazare used as "mascot" by NGOs stalling development projects: BJP Agencies Bhopal, Mar 19 Anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare is being used as a "mascot" by NGOs which receive foreign funds and stall developmental projects over the issue of land acquisition, Madhya Pradesh BJP's monthly mouthpiece Charaiveti has said. "Though he is an upright man personally, Anna Hazare is the "mascot" of such NGOs which receive foreign funds and are known for stalling the developmental projects," said an article penned by the magazine's editor, Jairam Shukla, in its latest edition. "Possibly the way the country has started marching ahead under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the foreign forces might be averse to it and sponsoring Anna 'mandali' (group) for agitation," it said. Hazare has been opposing the NDA government's Land Bill and held a protest in Delhi last month to demand the withdrawal of the anti-farmer amendments to the Land Acquisition Act, 2013. "Modi has given 'Make in India' slogan. If the country agrees with it and wants to make a mark in the competition going on globally, investment and rapid industrialisation is needed. Factories, IT parks and infrastructure cannot be raised in the sky. For this land is needed," the article said. "For such development 0.0001 per cent land of the country's total area is needed to be acquired, according to rough figures. It is unfortunate that a huge area of land has been reserved for tigers and wild animals, but developmental projects are being stalled by vested interests," it said. Taking a dig at the Congress, the BJP's mouthpiece alleged that it displaced the tribals from the forest land and ruined villages. Now, when the ball for developmental projects has rolled for betterment of the civil society, a hue and cry is being raised all over, it said. "Had such a hullabaloo been created in China and USA, the two nations would not have developed. When the citizens of these two countries put national interest first, why Indians can't do it? It is needed to be understood," the article further said. destructive manner. Singh also said the menace of terrorism is greatly amplified in today’s digital world. "A 'lone wolf' or a "DIY (Do It Yourself) terrorist can go online and learn how to carry out an attack without ever leaving home," he said and added that an expert group had been recently constituted to look into all possible avenues of cybercrime and its linkages with the terrorist world. He said the need for a committee was felt as many terror groups are adept at using the latest technology to propagate their beliefs and deeds. They extensively use modern technology to reach out to wider audience with susceptible minds. "Their online propaganda is causing selfradicalisation among youths. It is a matter of serious concern that they are seeding the minds of innocents with poisonous provocation and inspiring them to be brutally intolerant and violent with others," he said. Singh also sought international cooperation in India's fight to counter the menace of terrorism which knows no boundaries and doesn't respect nations' sovereignties. The terrorists have become transnational in character and, therefore, LAND BILL ROW: international cooperation is needed to build popular opinion and pressurise the countries that use terrorists as their strategic assets, he added. He called for global awareness on terrorism and said all countries should be aware of developments in this area, which is bound to affect them in some way, sooner than later. The three-day Counter Terrorism Conference, 2015 will discuss issues like 'illegal migration and border security', 'cyber space', 'social media and terrorism', and 'terror trade: weapons, narcotics and fake currency' in separate sessions. It is organised by India Foundation in association with Sardar Patel University of Police Security and Criminal Justice at Jaipur. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, former Home Secretary G K Pillai, former Army Chief Gen (retd) V P Malik, former chief of BSF Prakash Singh and other dignitaries are among the participants. Cong hits out at govt over Gadkari's letters to opposition parties Agencies New Delhi, Mar 19 Congress on Thursday took a jibe at the government over Union Minister Nitin Gadkari writing a letter to Opposition parties including Sonia Gandhi to debate land acquisition bill asking "why this sudden wisdom has dawned" on them and whether BJP was facing "jitters". Party spokesperson Ajoy Kumar accused the Centre of "hoodwinking" people through such "diversionary" tactics. Kumar also said that the Congress President has "not got the letter so far" and that it is "strange that except the recipient every one else has already got the letter". "..If Prime Minister Modi and BJP are sincere, they should first withdraw the Land Acquisition Ordinance and apologise to the entire farming community," the party said in a press release posing half a dozen questions to the NDA government. To rub it on the government further, the statement also referred to earlier reports of Rural Development Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh not being in favour of the ordinance, a contention, which was denied by him later. "Why is the Rural Development Minister mum on the issue and why has Gadkari become his spokesperson," it said. "Will Modi and Gadkari answer as to why did they use the tyranny of majority in Lok Sabha to forcibly pass the Land Acquisition Ordinance despite nation-wide protests and public outrage," it said. The party also questioned as to why should complete political unanimity built painstakingly by discussion with all stakeholders, states and Parliament by Congress party over a period of two years was "undone in a whimsical fashion" by Modi to support a few "crony capitalists". "Will Modi and Gadkari answer as to whether the BJP is facing the jitters on account of the hoax and farce of Land Acquisition Ordinance having been called off by the complete Opposition unity led by Congress President," it said. Attacking Fadnavis, who also holds Home portfolio, without taking his name, Sena MLC Anil Parab wondered how dance bars are still active in the city. The Fadnavis government also came under fire from many members of the Upper House over the law and order situation, who raised various issues during the discussion. Munde also dismissed an earlier claim made by Fadnavis that the rate of conviction has improved after the BJP government came to power last year. "How can the rate of conviction double in just three months?...It was 14 per cent and has gone up to 28 per cent in three months...The conviction came from cases like jumping the traffic signal, travelling triple seat on motorcycle etc. But it's sad the real cases are still pending before the court without any results for years," Munde said. "So we need to create jobs, we need to have industries. We need to have investment to create jobs for them. The Union Transport Minister said as per the new bill, we have decided to increase land compensation up to four times to farmers in rural areas and double the land price in urban areas, besides their resettlement and jobs to their kin. He added that it was the UPA government which had excluded 13 laws outside the ambit of the provisions of mandatory consent and social impact under its bill and BJP government has only added a few more issues to the exempted list that include acquisition of land for defence and security, rural and social infrastructure, besides setting up of industrial corridors. NEW DELHI, MAR : US rate hike: RBI prepared to deal with volatility in markets: R Rajan NEW DELHI, MAR 19: RBI is fully prepared to deal with any volatility in Indian markets, due to US Federal Reserve's policy action on interest rates, and normalcy will be ensured, Governor Raghuram Rajan said. It is widely expected that the Fed could give signal on rate hike as the US economy is showing signs of improvement. This may result in the flight of capital from the emerging markets including India. "There could be volatility in (stock and currency) markets if Fed hikes rate... (but) normalcy will be restored in the market even if there is volatility," Rajan said after meeting Finance Minister Arun Jaitley here. India is much better prepared if Fed moves on rates, he said. The Federal Open Market Committee, the Fed's policy arm, is expected to take a call on interest rate or could give signal on the interest rate in its post- meeting statement later tonight. Rajan further said that RBI will take a cue from the Fed policy statement. India is prepared to deal with foreign fund outflows as the country has significant forex reserves. After rising for consecutive weeks, India's foreign exchange reserves marginally declined by USD 286.3 million to USD 337.793 billion in the week to March 6 despite a rise in foreign currency assets (FCAs). The NORTHLINES 11 SPORTS www.thenorthlines.com JAMMU | FRIDAY | MARCH 20 | 2015 ICC World Cup 2015 India thrash Bangladesh by 109 runs, enter semis MELBOURNE, MARCH 19 Rohit Sharma blasted a strokeful century as defending champions India stormed into the semi-finals of the ICC Cricket World Cup by thrashing a hapless Bangladesh by 109 runs in a lop-sided contest here on Thursday. Riding on Rohit's spectacular 137 off 126 balls and his rollicking 122-run fourth wicket stand in only 15.5 overs with the belligerent Suresh Raina (65), India were able to post a commendable 302 for six after opting to bat at the MCG. In reply, Bangladesh were never in the contention as India hardly took their foot off the pedal to dismiss their neighbours for a paltry 193 in 45 overs without hardly breaking a sweat. The juggernaut continues to roll on for Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men who have now recorded their seventh win on the trot in this mega event. India will now meet the winner of the third quarter-final between Australia and Pakistan at Sydney on March 26. The victory took the tally of India's successive World Cup victories to 11, including four in the last edition, as it was yet another easy outing for the title contenders. Such has been India's domination that whenever they have batted first in the tournament, they have scored 300 or more and taken all 70 opposition wickets in seven matches so far. Umesh Yadav (4/31 in 9 overs) was bang on target during his entire spell despite a flurry of boundaries in Tamim Iqbal's run-a-ball 25 that ended with Dhoni taking a low catch off the bowler. Imrul Kayes (5) was run-out due to a mix-up. Two in-form players in left-hander Soumya Sarkar (29) and Mahmudullah Riyadh (21) steadied the ship with 40 run stand before Shikhar Dhawan took an acrobatic catch to get rid of the latter on the boundary line. Once Mahmudullah was gone there was an air of inevitability about the result with Soumya Sarkar being Kathua competition on March 24 State Judo meet from March 25 JAMMU, MARCH 19 entries from those interested players from districts and Jammu and Kashmir Judo educational institutions for the two-day championship. Mohammed Shami (2/37 in 8 overs) took his wickets tally to 17 while Ravichandran Ashwin (0/30 in 10 overs) and Ravindra Jadeja (2/42 in 8 overs) again operated well in tandem with big MCG boundaries as cushion. The day however belonged to Rohit, who hit his seventh ODI hundred with 14 boundaries and three sixes to his credit while Raina with seven fours and a big six off Shakib Al Hasan played an equally attractive as well as game-changing knock off 57 balls. Rohit's penchant for scoring big hundred was again evident as he now has two ODI hundreds at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (he has scored 138 vs Australia) and he got runs when it mattered the most, in a crunch game, with his team under some kind of pressure. While the Mumbaikar paced his innings brilliantly scoring the first 50 off 70 balls and the next 87 runs off only 56 balls, the left-hander from UP was more adventurous in his shot selection as he treated both pacers and spinners with equal disdain. Despite scoring two half-centuries, Rohit has had a quiet tournament. So the very first ball bowled by rival captain Mashrafe was hit through the covers and certainly calmed his nerves. He also had a firm push back past the same bowler for a boundary. Shikhar Dhawan also handsomely drove Taskin Ahmed in the very next over as Indian openers were off the blocks. Mashrafe introduced Nasir Hossain's part-time off-spin as early as siXth over and Rohit quickly cashed in on the opportunity to loft him over extra cover for a boundary. While Shikhar was happy to rotate the strike, Rohit did hit some audacious shots. It included a six down the ground off Nasir as 50 runs came in 9.3 overs. The first 15 overs yielded 70 runs and the first wicket fell in the 17th over when team's key player Shakib al Hasan was brought into the attack. He induced Dhawan with a tossed up ball to come out for the drive and miss it as Mushfiqur Rahim completed the stumping. Rubel, then got rid of an out of form Virat Kohli as he got a thickish edge to a fuller delivery from Rubel Hossain as Rahim completed formalities. ADELAIDE OVAL, MARCH 19 India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni praised his team mates for the way they have quickly pulled themselves out of a form slump to reach the semifinals of the World Cup. The defending champions were struggling just over a month ago but have now won seven matches in a row, thrashing Bangladesh by 109 runs on Thursday to reach the last four. "It has been good, we can`t shy away from the fact that we are playing some good cricket," Dhoni said at the post-match presentation. "But at the same time a month back we were struggling. A lot of credit needs to go to the boys and the support staff." Dhoni said he was especially pleased with the overall health of India`s game. India`s batsmen have a well-deserved reputation as being among the best in the world but they have also bowled out their opposition in all seven matches and excelled on the field. "The good thing is not many players from our side are in the top run-scorers list, but the batting has performed," Dhoni said. "That was an area we wanted to improve (bowling teams out) Even in New Zealand and South Africa, we were struggling with that, but now we are doing much better. It`s difficult to pin-point how it changed. "Cricket has a lot of abstracts, but we need to do a lot of the small things right. Put in the intensity and hope it all turns out." Batting first, India compiled a daunting total of 302 for six, built on the back of a magnificent century from Rohit Sharma, who completed his first World Cup hundred. He started cautiously after India slumped to 115-3 but picked up the tempo later on, finishing with an impressive 137 off 126 balls. "I wanted to bat as long as possible and put the team into a good Two days after the cricket world farewelled Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara from ODIs, two Pakistan seniors will begin the final phase - perhaps the final day - of their ODI careers. Misbah-ul-Haq has announced he will play only Tests after the World Cup. Shahid Afridi has said he will also step away from the format in which he made his name, even if at times, retirement has seemed like a state of mind for Afridi, more than a state of being. They are perhaps contemporary cricket's odd couple; often invoked in the same breath, each is construed to be what the other is not. Yet, as they move to the cusp of retirement together, they will both reflect with pleasure on their careers, and be joined in keeping emotions in check, Misbah said. "The biggest satisfaction is that we gave everything to our team and country," he said. "Whatever we had, we put our efforts together. This World Cup is still not over, and we'd really like to win tomorrow's game and go further. That's what, you could say, our desire and dream is. "You just take it as a normal game. Go there and try to hit your basic stride and try to give 100%. That is the only thing you can do. If you just think about this game further than that, you are putting yourself under pressure, and I'm not going to do that, and even Shahid is not going to do that." As ever, Pakistan's bowling appears to hold the key to their success. Michael Clarke identified the opposition quicks as particularly ARCH Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) Blues and JKCA Yellow won their respective matches in the trials games being conducted by the Association at GGM Science College Hostel Ground, here to pick up the team for upcoming North Zone Twenty20 Tournament slated to be held from March 24. In first match of the day, Parvez Rasool led JKCA Yellow registered a convincing 26 runs win against JKCA Green. Earlier, batting first, JKCA Yellow set a target of 138 runs for six wickets. Hardeep Singh remained top scorer with unbeaten 45-ball 50 runs while Rohit Bhatt and Amir Sofi contributed 16 and 17 runs respectively. From JKCA Green, Rohit Sharma (4-0-30-2) and Wasim Raza (4-1-21-2) were the most successful bowlers while Umar Nazir and Bandeep Singh shared apiece each. In reply, JKCA Green could make 102 runs for eight wickets thereby lost the match. Rouf made highest 21 runs while Tasheen Dar, Wasim Raza and MELBOURNE, MARCH 19 situation and the bowlers did a fantastic job," Rohit said after being named man of the match. "Batting at the top of the order, it`s important to get big hundreds and I want to make the most of it when I go out to bat and I`m happy with the way it turned out. "We played as a team. Bowlers are taking wickets, batsmen are scoring runs, we just need to take this momentum into the semis." Bangladesh, playing in the quarter-finals at the World Cup for the first time, were bowled out for 193 in 45 overs, but won plenty of admirers with their performances during the tournament. "The toss could`ve been important, we like to bat first but we can`t complain. A score of 300 is always difficult to chase, 280 would have been much better," Bangladesh captain Mashrafe Mortaza said. "Except this game, everyone back home should be happy. Most of the players had only played two or three ODIs before the World Cup and are just starting their careers. "Hopefully we can carry on from here. We don`t have enough experience to play in this sort of matches, but we now know how we have to play." Still have the bowling to trouble Australia: Misbah Blue, Yellow win ties in JKCA trial matches JAMMU T , M 19 AWI MS Dhoni praises India for turning things around dangerous to his team's World Cup hopes, and while Misbah agreed - stating Pakistan had a "bowling line up which can really go through any team" even without Mohammad Irfan - he also emphasised the importance of a positive approach. "I think Australia always just plays aggressive cricket, and if you want to really be up there against them, you also need to play good, aggressive cricket," Misbah said. "If two teams are playing aggressive cricket, you still have a chance. There is still a chance you could win with a defensive approach, but we're looking forward to playing attacking cricket. "You can't say now Irfan is out of this competition, so we just can't play Australia. We've got other bowlers who are good enough, equally good enough, and they are also performing really well. All three of the seamers are up to the mark - even the fourth one. Yasir Shah is a bowler that can really put pressure on the opposition. So we've still got that sort of team, that sort of talent, that sort of bowling line-up, that could really put Australia under pressure." As a captain, Misbah has largely veered toward the dependable, rather than the mercurial. He suggested Pakistan's strategy would not radically change, as he used the example of another team's slew of surprise changes as a cautionary tale. "Sometimes as you try to do things the way Sri Lanka tried to do in the quarter-finals yesterday, and they just got trapped into that. So sometimes simple things, basic things if you are doing them right will really help you, especially in crunch situations and matches." Serena Williams to meet Simona Halep in semis at Indian Wells INDIAN WELLS, MARCH 19 Adil Reshi added 13, 15 and 12 runs respectively. Deepak Manhas (4-0-19-3) and Parvez Rasool (4-0-16-2) were emerged as most successful bowlers. Meanwhile, in other match of the day, JKCA Blues made it a narrow four-run win against JKCA Reds. Batting first, JKCA Blues scored 144 runs for five wickets with Imran Harron (40 off 33 balls) and Pranav Gupta (31 off 26 balls) being top run getters. Vishwajeet Singh and Parveen contributed 22 and 27 runs respectively. Vijay Dogra (4-020-3) bowled extremely well while Abid Nabi and Jahangir Lone took one wicket each. In reply, JKCA Reds could make 140 runs in given 20 overs for eight wickets. Asir Khan made unbeaten 43-ball 40 runs while Ian Dev Singh (39 off 19 balls, 4x4, 3x6) and Sourav Chopra (18 off 11 balls) were other main scorers. From JKCA Blues, Vishwajeet Singh (4-0-23-3) and Ram Dayal (4-0-23-2) shared seven wickets while Omar Alam, Raman Dutta and Manik Gupta shared apiece each. Serena Williams took one step closer to a capping a remarkable return to Indian Wells after defeating Timea Bacsinszky 7-5 6-3 on Wednesday to move into the semi-finals of the BNP Paribas Open. Williams is playing in Indian Wells following a 14-year boycott of the event where she alleged she had suffered racist abuse from fans. While Williams has said her appearance here has been a victory in itself, a third career tournament triumph would be special for the world number one. "I`m just happy to still be here playing in front of you guys," Williams said during her on-court interview, after finishing with 23 winners and seven aces. "I`m just happy to be here." Williams extended her winning streak to 15 matches and will next face Romania`s world number three Simona Halep, who is the last player to have beaten her at the seasonending WTA Championships in Singapore last October. Halep turned up the aggression and rallied for a 5-7 6-1 6-1 victory over Carla Suarez Navarro to claim the first women`s semi-finals berth. The Romanian overcame a blistering start by 12th seed Suarez Navarro at Indian Wells to move a step closer to what would be her biggest tournament title. Suarez Navarro could do no wrong in the opening stages of the match, sweeping the first four games to go up 4-0. But Halep clawed back to 4-4, and then 5-5, before the Spaniard regrouped and unleashed a huge forehand winner to claim the first set. From then on, Halep dominated. "She was opening the court pretty well with the angles, and it`s really tough to play and hit the balls from wide in the court, so I knew I had to start playing more aggressively and hit more into the court," Halep said. "I just tried to relax my body and my mind, fight for every point and play my best." Halep finished the match in style, blasting a big ace. Free Tibet groups urge IOC to drop Beijing 2022 bid BERLIN, MARCH 19 A coalition of Free Tibet groups urged the International Olympic Committee on Thursday to drop a bid from Beijing for the 2022 winter Games over its human rights record in the region. A group of 175 organisations will be handing in a report to the IOC later in the day on what it claims is a deterioration of the human rights situation after the Chinese capital hosted the 2008 summer Games. Supporters of autonomy for Tibet, a remote Himalayan region ruled by the China since its troops marched in in 1950, say human rights had not improved as was expected while repression increased. "The old saying goes ‘fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me’," Alistair Currie of the Free Tibet organisation, who co-authored the report, said in a statement. "The IOC wanted to believe that China would get all dewyeyed and idealistic under the influence of the 2008 Games. The reality was that instead of increased sensitivity to human rights in Beijing, we saw increased self-confidence that abusing human rights was no problem on the world stage." Beijing is campaigning to land the winter edition of the Olympics, with Kazakhstan`s Almaty the only other candidate. The IOC will elect the winner in July. Free Tibet and human rights activists disrupted the 2008 Olympic torch relay at several international stops while also protesting during the torch lighting ceremony in Olympia, Greece. The IOC has since dropped international legs from its Olympic Games torch relays. Tibet`s exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, said in December the Chinese government was holding back President Xi Jinping from granting genuine autonomy to Tibet. 12 JAMMU | FRIDAY | MARCH 20 | 2015 FS conveyed to Pak India’s commitment to resolve all issues: Govt Agencies New Delhi, Mar 19 Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar has conveyed to Pakistan India’s committment to resolve all issues within framework of Simla pact and Lahore Declaration if there was an environment free from terror and violence, during his trip to Islamabad two weeks back, government said today. Minister of State for External Affairs V K Singh, replying to a question, said Jaishankar, during talks with his Pakistani counterpart Aizaz Chaudhary, also raised India’s concern over cross-border terrorism and lack of progress in the 26/11 Mumbai attack case. Jaishankar had visited Pakistan on March 3 as part of his “SAARC yatra” during which he held extensive talks with Chaudhary besides calling on Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his Advisor on Foreign Affairs and National Security Sartaj Aziz. Singh said Pakistan was called upon to maintain peace and tranquility along the International Border and respect the sanctity of the LoC in Jammu and Kashmir. “The talks between the two Foreign Secretaries were held in a constructive and positive atmosphere. Government, will however, continue to monitor all activities that have a bearing on India’s national security and on the safety and security of our people,” the Minister said. The Lahore Declaration was signed after the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s summit meeting with Sharif in 1999 while Simla Agreement was signed between the two countries in 1972. Replying to a separate question, Singh said government continued to convey its concerns to the interlocutors, including those from the US, over continuing acts of cross- border terrorism emanating from Pakistan. To another question, he said both India and China have agreed to maintain the momentum of high-level exchanges and deepen cooperation with a determination to add new content and substance to the relationship. India's Beyond Visual Range (BVR) air-to-air missile Astra was on Thursday successfully test fired from a Sukhoi-30 fighter aircraft for the second day in a row. The missile, which was fired off Odisha coast near the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, Balasore, has been indigenously designed and developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). In today's test flight, an Astra missile carrying telemetry equipment in place of the warhead, was fired from the Sukhoi-30 aircraft against a Lakshya (pilotless target aircraft) target. The target was successfully engaged and it was captured by telemetry and electro-optical tracking stations. A successful trial of Astra was also conducted yesterday using a Sukhoi 30 aircraft, which was aimed at confirming missile's capability to undergo manoeuvre involving very high gravitational forces upto the order of 30 'g', an official statement said. Dr V G Sekaran, Director General (Missiles & Strategic Systems) congratulated the team for developing and testing such a complex system which is comparable with the best in the world. The Project Director Dr S Venugopal said that "the fourth and fifth Air Launch of Astra was once again perfect in all respect and engaged the target with precision. More tests will follow to prove its repeatability". Astra has proved its capability as a formidable weapon, he said. A question by a BJP MP in the Lok Sabha about the origins of Ganga and the "effects" of bathing in it left many members amused today as the minister quoted a legend to say that King Bhagirath had brought it. When the question was asked by Prabhatsinh Pratapsinh Chauhan, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan too wondered: "what is this? ... Is this a question?". Chauhan raised the issue when the Minister of State for Water Resources Sanwar Lal Jat was replying to supplementaries during the Question Hour. "I want to know who brought the Ganga, why did he bring it?... What effects does bathing in it have," he asked. This odd question left many members smiling while some others were seen having an apparently surprised look on their faces. Jat said it was a "historical" matter and added it is known that Bhagirath had brought the river for the welfare of the masses. "Worship is done there," he added. Many hydel power projects are facing hurdles, resulting in long delays and stoppage of works. “There is uncertainty over hydro power projects… Investors are not ready to make investments,” said Goyal, who is also in charge of Coal and New and Renewable Energy Ministries. Even though existing hydel projects are generating electricity at cheaper rates, he said many new ones are stuck and cited the examples of Subansiri (Assam) and Teesta (Sikkim) plants, among others. “Different projects are stuck due to different reasons,” he said point during the pursuit, but he was able to ride through police, narrowly missing an officer who opened the door of a patrol vehicle to confront the man. The chase ended when the motorcyclist pulled into a gas station in Ontario. The chase also took the suspect and police through San Dimas, Pomona, Claremont and La Verne. The suspect was identified as Phillip Resendez, 22. He was taken to the West Valley Detention Center on charges of failure to yield and driving on the wrong side of the road during a pursuit. Southern California's Authorities detonate 20,000 no-tail whale is no fluke pounds of seized SAN DIEGO: A gray whale lacking flukes on its tail was caught on camera by whale and dolphin watchers off the coast of Southern California. Whale watchers with Captain Dave's Dolphin and Whale Safari captured video of the whale's injured tail Monday, one day after it was photographed by a group with Dana Wharf Whale Watching. Audrey Evans with the Birch Aquarium said she spotted the no-tail-whale Saturday flukes may have lost circulation and fallen off as a result of getting caught in fishing gear. "It's reported that they probably get them caught in fishing gear, crab pots," Ridgway said. David Anderson of Captain Dave's Dolphin and Whale Safari agreed with Ridgway. "The injury appears to be amputation caused by fishing gear entanglement. The blood supply to the affected area may have been cut off causing the end of the tail and flukes to die and fall off without impacting the rest of the whale," he said in the description of a YouTube video depicting the whale. Capt. Tom White of the Dana Pride, which runs from Dana Wharf Whale Watching, said the whale seems to have adapted to its injury. The Act casts a responsibility on every employer to create an environment which is free from sexual harassment. "Employers are required to organize workshops and awareness programmes at regular intervals for sensitizing the employees about the provision of this legislation and display notices regarding the constitution of Internal Committee, penal consequences of sexual harassment etc," she said in her reply. Gandhi on Tuesday had stated in Rajya Sabha that most government departments, 90 per cent of the private sector and above all, even Parliament do not have the mandatory Sexual Harassment Committees in place, this, despite over a quarter of India's workforce being women. The Supreme Court guidelines clearly state that all workplaces should constitute a Complaint committee to deal with complaints of sexual harassment. Taking forward the Supreme Court guidelines, the law was enacted which came into force with effect from Dec 9, 2013. According to the Union Health Ministry, as on March 18, 1,841 people have succumbed to the disease while the number of people affected by the H1N1 Uncertainty preventing investments in hydel projects: Piyush Goyal Motorcyclist shows off tricks while fleeing police in California ONTARIO, Calif : A motorcyclist The NORTHLINES www.thenorthlines.com fireworks in Texas MIDLAND : A Texas police department shared video from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' detonation of 20,000 pounds of seized fireworks. The Midland Police Department said its bomb squad assisted the ATF in disposing of the fireworks over the course of 3 1/2 days in Glasscock County, Texas, and captured video of the resulting light show. "This disposal was very informative for our bomb techs who are charged with handling explosives," the police department said in a Facebook post. "This was done during the day because it was not meant to be a fireworks show. These fireworks could not be donated since their destruction was court-ordered," the department said. and cited politics, environmental issues and court rulings being among the various reasons. He assured that government would make efforts to start hydel projects once the “uncertainty” is over. At the end of January, installed hydro power generation capacity in the country stood at nearly 41,000 MW. Noting that the House needs to have a discussion on hydel projects in the country, Goyal said many regions including North East and Uttarakhand have significant hydro potential. To a query on Green Energy Corridor project, Goyal said synchronisation of renewable power under this programme is yet to start as implementation is at different stages. The project, being done with soft loan assistance from German lender KfW, would cover Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu and Jammu & Kashmir. “Green Energy Corridor project will help in grid stability by way of evacuating renewable power from the generation points to load centres with creation of additional and adequate transmission capacity,” the Minister said. KfW would provide a concessional loan of 1 billion Euros, over the next six years, to augment and strengthen power transmission infrastructure for evacuating renewable energy. Besides, Germany’s GIZ has agreed to provide technical assistance of 2 million euros for forecasting, balancing, market design and network management related to grid integration of renewable power. Six more deaths in the last 24 hours took the toll in Rajathan to 397, just behind Gujarat, which has reported 400 casualties. The ministry said that the number of affected persons was 6,271 in Gujarat. The death toll in Maharashtra is 322 with 3,788 people having contracted the H1N1 virus. In Madhya Pradesh, 266 people have perished with 1,999 persons affected. The toll in Telangana is 74 while in Karnataka, following the death of another person, it has risen to 77. Fiftytwo swine flu deaths have been reported in Punjab. The toll in West Bengal is 23 while Uttar Pradesh has witnessed 35 deaths. Jammu and Kashmir has seen 16 swine flu fatalities. In Delhi, following the death of a 24-year-old woman due to the disease, the toll has risen to 12 with the number of affected persons at 4,084. Meanwhile, as per a ministry study, 34 per cent of the 723 swine flu deaths that were analysed had occurred in the age group 30-45 years followed closely by those in the 45-60 bracket, who accounted for 32 per cent of the fatalities. Further, 11 people have died in Kerala while the death toll in Tamil Nadu is at 13. Agencies Rajasthan, Mar 19 tomorrow. The Congress president is scheduled to visit the villages of Jhalawar, the hometown and constituency of Raje, and also affected villages of Bundi, Kota and Baran of Hadoti region. Raje arrived at Lakheri village by helicopter at around 11 am and visited rain and hailstorm affected Paapdi, Badakheda, Basoda and Devji-ki-Khedi villages of Bundi district. "The govt is well aware of the loss and damage by unseasonal rain and my govt is committed to provide the farmers all the required assistance," she said. The National Disaster Relief team would survey the damage to the crops by the unseasonal rain and submit its report, Raje told reporters, adding that the state government is in constant touch with the Centre in this regard. Ahead of Sonia's visit, Rajasthan CM inspects rain affected villages A day ahead of Congress president Sonia Gandhi's scheduled visit to unseasonal rain affected areas of Rajasthan, Chief Min-ister Vasundhara Raje on Thur-sday toured the villages in the district and assured farmers of providing adequate relief. After assessing the situation and listening to farmers' woes, Raje declared 820 out of 860 villages in the district as scarcity hit. She also ordered the district authorities to immediately complete the survey on damage of crops and ensure that they get the relief amount promptly. Raje's sudden visit to rain affected villages in Hadoti region is seen as a major diplomatic move ahead of Sonia Gandhi's visit to Rajasthan Mars Orbiter may live beyond six months M ars Orbiter Mission (MOM), spacecraft launched by Indian Space Research Organi-sation (ISRO), has a lifespan of six month as per the initial plans, but it is likely to outlive the set lifespan. The orbiter is expected to live beyond the lifespan of 6months as the spacecraft is carrying reserve propellant on board. The Mars Orbiter would have completed its life span on March 24, 2015, but that will not happen as India's first endeavour to the Red Planet is yet to give more productive results. The scientific and health systems of the spacecraft are operating in satisfactory state. Minister of A Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh said in Lok Sabha that the scheduled life span of MOM, after its launch into the Mars orbit on 24th September, 2014, was six months and it would complete it on 24th of March. The Minister added that with a reserve of 37 kg of propellant available to the satellite, and "since the health parameters of all critical systems of the satellite are very satisfactory, it is expected that MOM will outlive its planned life span of six months. The increased duration of observation of Mars by five scientific payloads will enhance the planetary science data. It would also enable coverage of Mars in different seasons." MOM has achieved various feats after it was inserted into the Mars orbit on September 24 that includes first interplanetary mission successfully realized by India and first Indian spacecraft to include full scale on-board autonomy to get over the communication gaps and long distances owing to non-visibility periods. ISRO designed, constructed and launched the entire mission MOM, within a budget of Rs 450 crore. still forming new stars, but not in nearly such large numbers, she added. Some astronomers had believed that such giant star clusters could form only in the early universe. The Milky Way has gas clouds, but nothing comparable to this galaxy’s Cloud D which houses the enormous star cluster enshrouded in thick gas and dust, she said. How much of a gas cloud gets turned into stars varies in different parts of the universe. In the Milky Way, the rate for gas clouds the size of Cloud D is less than 5 per cent. In Cloud D, the rate is at least 10 times higher, and perhaps much more. NGC 5253 has hundreds of large star clusters, including at least several that are young, the astronomers report. The most spectacular is found within Cloud D. “We’re catching this cluster at a special time. With a cluster this large, we would expect several thousand stars that would have become supernovae and exploded by now. We found no evidence of a supernova yet,” she said. The cluster contains more than 7,000 massive “O” stars — the most luminous of all known stars, each a million times brighter than our Sun. NGC 5253 has approximately nine times as much dark matter as visible matter — a much higher rate than the inner parts of the Milky Way, she said. The research was published in the journal Nature Over million young stars found in nearby galaxy stronomers have discovered more than a million young stars forming in a hot, dusty cloud of molecular gases in a tiny galaxy near Milky Way. The star cluster is buried within a supernebula in a dwarf galaxy known as NGC 5253, in the constellation Centaurus. The cluster has one billion times the luminosity of our Sun, but is invisible in ordinary light, hidden by its own hot gases, researchers said. “We are stardust, and this cluster is a factory of stars and soot,” said Jean Turner, a professor of physics and astronomy in the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) College and lead author of the research. “We are seeing the dust that the stars have created. Normally when we look at a star cluster, the stars long ago dispersed all their gas and dust, but in this cluster, we see the dust,” she said. The amount of dust surrounding the stars is extraordinary — approximately 15,000 times the mass of our Sun in elements such as carbon and oxygen. The cluster is about 3 million years old, which in astronomical terms, is remarkably young. It is likely to live for more than a billion years, she said. The Milky Way has not formed gigantic star clusters for billions of years, she said. It is
