Harbor Festival
Pingxi’s Sky Lantern Festival
is a folk custom event that
started in the reign of the Qing
Dynasty Daoguang emperor
and continued on for 200 years
to today. Over the years Pingxi
Sky Lantern Festival has
become very well-known and
it has been said “Sky lanterns
in the north and hornet firecrackers in
the south.” The Sky Lantern Festival has also been named by Discovery
as the second best night festival in the world. The sky lanterns symbolize
prayers and wishes and the cleansing of the soul to market the spirit of
Taiwan throughout the world.
The Yeliu Cleansing of the
Harbor Festival held in Wanli
district, New Taipei City, is a major
local annual event held at Lantern
Festival every year and has been
designated one of the important
cultural assets of New Taipei City.
Apart from the special harbor
cleansing and fire crossing rituals, performances of lion dance with a local
folk style and welcoming the gods by meeting two different gods /teams
from land and sea give visitors from Taiwan and other countries a feeling
of the atmosphere of Lantern Festival and Chinese New Year in Taiwan.
