Cabaret in the night is an inner city delight, so why not Cabaret in the Day for those of us in the outer city? This was the question I asked Gallery Director John Cheeseman and myself when this thought bubble hit me in 2014, and the result was our first Cabaret in the Day season at Mosman Art Gallery and exponentially increasing audiences over four popular matinees. Personally, I love the concept of an after Sunday lunch matinée of top professional cabaret, affordable ticket prices, easy parking, afternoon tea and mingling with the performers included after the show and then home by 5pm. That’s my idea of an ideal Sunday afternoon in Sydney’s crisp autumn and winter. Headlining our three musical entertainments is the extraordinary Glenn Amer: ‘the fingers of Liberace and the voice of Mario Lanza.’ Glenn is a one man symphony orchestra and massed choir not to mention a radio personality in the great Australian tradition of Jack Davey. Glenn truly is a jack of all showbiz trades and past master of every single one! Mosman’s own Andrew O’Keefe is known nationwide to millions of viewers as a TV game show host and effervescent anchor man, but he is also a stylish singer and comedian. Glenn’s and Andrew’s sophisticated touch is the perfect fit for the merry, wicked and charming songs of Michael Flanders and Donald Swann. its acclaimed Mosman premiere, Our Glad played to capacity houses at Glen St Theatre, Hunters Hill Music, Parramatta Riverside and The Savage Club. In its now revised and expanded form - those 1947 radio commercials are the gift that keeps on giving! - Our Glad returns to thrill and amuse everyone who loves operetta and musical comedy. MEMORIES OF PETER DAWSON by David Mitchell & Melvyn Morrow In the 1950’s and 60’s, the most sophisticated musical duo in England were MICHAEL FLANDERS and DONALD SWANN in their internationally acclaimed revues, At the Drop of a Hat which ran for over two years on London’s West End and At the Drop of Another Hat which played for almost as long. In 1964, Flanders and Swann came to Australia and enjoyed a sell-out season at Sydney’s Theatre Royal. For sixty years in the first half of the 20th century, Peter Dawson was Australia’s Ambassador of Song and the most famous recording artist in the world. Throughout his monumental 60 year career, Peter Dawson sold some 25 million 78’s celebrating family values with sincerity and the British Empire with jingoistic gusto. GLENN AMER is known internationally for his thrilling piano wizardry and his powerful operatic voice. OUR GLAD Operetta memories of Gladys Moncrieff starring The Australian Opera’s CHRISTINE DOUGLAS and the inimitable GLENN AMER What Joan Sutherland was to grand opera, Gladys Moncrieff, ‘Our Glad”, was to the golden age of operetta and musical comedy. Only a Rose, Vilia, The Merry Widow Waltz, We’ll Gather Lilacs, L’amour Toujours L’amour, Tea for Two, Love Live Forever ... these are just some of the evergreen classics sung by the Australian Opera’s Christine Douglas accompanied by pianist extraordinaire and comic genius, Glenn Amer. A musical pavlova of delicious melodies and nostalgia!
