Antonio Molina Eredia OoZoO The Rotary Club of Mosman Bulletin Vol. 54, No. 30 for meeting on March 17, 2015 March Is Water and Sanitation Month Dear Rotarians, A Community Forum was held on Tuesday last week and we had over 80 people from community groups attend. The evening was a great success with the groups wanting a follow up meeting and several members agreeing to commence working on projects that will make it easier for groups to share resources and information in the future. A Volunteer Bank where you can request help or offer your services was an example of the suggestions. It was also suggested that a calendar of events be promoted to let people know when there are opportunities to support other groups. Several groups on the night connected and offered support to each other. My thanks to Jane Floyd, Di Mckenzie and Liz Alderson who assisted on the night. It was a rewarding experience for everyone involved. I was very pleased to see the level of banter and fun at the last Rotary meeting. It makes lunch more relaxed and enjoyable. I think we made several thousand dollars in fines - but it was worth it! Please remember we want 60 more people to book for the 29th April dinner. Even if you cannot come, please forward the invitation on to friends and associates who may support the function. To assist this we will send the invitations out again next week so all you have to do is forward them on to anyone who may be interested. Please consider supporting the District functions that are coming up. We need to understand more about the opportunities that are out there in the big wide Rotary World of which we are part. In attendance officially were Barry Starr, Ben and Parisa Hart Clare Stockdale, Mosman exchange students Pierrick and Pedro, Robyne and myself. Murray Block and Louise were also there, keenly viewing the very interesting and varied artworks, which, as commented upon by the organisers, were of a high standard. The event was held at Mosman Art Gallery and our exchange students presented the prizes for 1st and 2nd place in the Junior category. They also spent a lot of time looking at and commenting on the artworks and seemed to enjoy the experience. Mosman’s Mayor Peter Abelson was a key speaker for the event and Mosman Rotary was thanked for its contribution. The winning pieces were shown on screen with each presentation which helped make the award-giving interesting. Ample refreshments both of the culinary and drink varieties also helped to make the evening festive. - Rob Hamilton, Youth Director Pedro and Barry and Pierrick with Paul Delprat (Head of the Julian Ashton Art School) and Gerald Christmas (President, Mosman Art Society) COMING EVENTS: Tuesday, 24th March: Anca Ramsden on "How to rejuvenate your brain” Neuroscience answers to stress and ageing. Our GUEST SPEAKER was Pedro Eredia Araujo. He told us about Brasil which has 202 million people which is almost half the population of South America. It has the 7th strongest economy in the world. It also has a very diverse ethnic mix of people. He is being sponsored by the Rotary Club of Montoya in District 4630. Their members tend to be in their 40s while ours tend to be somewhat older. He has attended RYLA and met students from all over the District. His family has hosted a girl from the USA. Pedro has a brother named Renato Eredia Araujo who is a year younger than him and they are very close. His father Luciano Araujo has a consulting company to manage farms. His mother Gislaine Eredia Araujo is a doctor of infectious diseases. His great-grandfather Antonio Molina Eredia helped found his town of Paranavai in Southern Brasil in 1952. It has a population of 95,000. It has a lot of agro-industries (cassava flour, chickens, oranges). Pedro has been to Peru where he visited Machu Pichu. He and his family have also been to Argentina. Australia was his first choice. He wanted to improve his English rather than learn another European language. In Brasil they speak Portuguese and a bit of Spanish. He also loves our beaches. Ms Bobby Redman (R C of Woy Woy), District Youth Counsellor for Brasil and several other countries, told us that new legislation means that we can only send students from Year 10 overseas and admit students of that age so that they can finish school when they get return home.
