Our goal is the creation of a prosperous and self-reliant 21st-century local economy based
upon a thriving independent business community.
Our searchable online directory at www.staylocal.org connects local shoppers with
independent businesses in Greater New Orleans. We know shoppers receive a torrent of
conflicting information, so we certify businesses as “certified local” using our eligibility
criteria. If you spot a business displaying our decal, you can be sure they’re locally owned.
We also raise public awareness of the benefits of shopping locally by educating residents
through talks, events, publications, and via our monthly newsletters and social media.
We support independent businesses by holding seminars, forums and marketing
campaigns, and by connecting them to resources to help their business thrive. We also
promote our member businesses to the community via our organizational and social
media networks. Finally, we advocate for these businesses at all levels of government so
they can mind their store while we work to ensure a level playing field.

Cooper to get the scoop on the makings of
a strategic resumé.
Tell me about your relationship with
New Orleans, and what brought you to
starting Strategic Resumés.
I was born and raised in New Orleans.
I left New Orleans to pursue interests in
Santa Cruz, Calif., but returned in 1994 and
started Strategic Resumés. I’ve been doing it
ever since.
You’re New Orleans’ only Certified
Advanced Resumé Writer. What led you to
pursue this field so vigorously?
In general, whether it has been essays
or articles, I have always had the ability
to write with a sense of empathy toward
the audience who would be reading those
pieces. I am a good writer. By undertaking
certification for this, I commited myself to
an ethical standard and continued training in
the subject that allows me to stay ahead of
the game and continue to refine my skill set.
What are the most common errors you
see in people’s resumés?
I would say the biggest problems are that
resumés tend to be too short, include typos,
and under-sell the individual who made
that resumé. I encourage people to include
positive information about themselves,
like quantifiable accomplishments such as
certifications, awards won, above-average
productivity statistics and generally things
that are others acknowledging your past
accomplishments. You need to sell yourself,
and I want to help you do that.
How do you approach modifying resumés for
different uses?
I think you need to strike a balance between not
producing an entirely different resumé for a specific
field, and accenting your specific skill set that may
be unique to that field. Basically, I’m not advocating
creating multiple resumés for different fields; rather,
making subtle changes to one specific resumé.
You’ve been operating in New Orleans for 19 years.
Have you found any distinguishing patterns in the
resumés of New Orleanians?
Typically you do not list which high school you went
to in your resumé, but here, everyone lists it because it
really seems to be more an issue of networking, in that
it tells people where you are from and who you know.

Legend met with owner and founder Kelsey Foreman at
Lakeview’s Harrison Market to discuss her craft.
What’s your relationship with New Orleans?
I was born in Lake Charles, grew up in Slidell, and
went to college in New Orleans. I love that you can be
yourself here, and nobody’s going to ask questions, or
look at you funny. There is no other city like this.
How did Cake Face Soaping come about?
When I was little, I was sick for a long time with an
undiagnosed illness, and the only thing that helped was
holistic medicine. I learned a lot about eating and living
healthy, how to be sure that what you’re putting on or
in your body isn’t damaging you. Three years ago, I got
really sick again, still undiagnosed. I’m a busybody and
needed something I could do while stuck at home, and I
came across making soap. It’s an artistic outlet, it’s fun,
and it involves math, which I like. After completing
school, I decided to start a business out of it, and it’s
grown from there.
What kinds of products do you offer?
I offer soaps, skin care cream, and lotions. Everything
is made from natural ingredients using all essential
oils with no artificial fragrances or fillers. The herbs
come from my home garden, and whatever I can’t grow
comes from Hollygrove Market & Farm. When sourcing
ingredients, I buy everything that I can locally.
Could you speak to the three principles that your
work adheres to?
All of my products are 100-percent natural,
100-percent handmade, and 100-percent vegan.
It’s important to me that my customers know they
aren’t adding any chemicals to their body. Remember,
whatever you put on your skin goes directly into your
bloodstream, which is then filtered through your
organs. Read any typical soap label, you’re going to see
alcohol, sulfates … A lot of soaps are even designed to
dry your skin out so that you have to buy the lotion,
too! You get none of this with my products.

with New Orleans Psychic Medium Cari Roy
For more than 20 years, New Orleans Psychic Medium
Cari Roy has been using her sixth sense to assist locals
and visitors get clarity and peace of mind. While her
office is run like most normal small businesses, her
business is paranormal, with services ranging from
forecasting the futures of business and personal matters
to bringing messages of comfort from the other side. She
also gives workshops on increasing intuition, channeling
creativity, and pursuing a purpose.
When did you first realize you had psychic
medium abilities?
I started sensing spirits at 7 years old. My mother, a
medium, recognized and cultivated these experiences
and helped me to understand what was happening and
why. A few years later I had visions of futures and pasts
and that’s when it became both psychic and medium.
What made you decide to be a psychic medium
professionally?
I’ve just always connected to people on a deep and
intuitive level; it’s just what I do. It’s my passion and
my purpose, and I followed my own instincts as they
led to making it my career. Helping others has always
been what’s driven me, and I’m happy to be able to do
it every day.
How do psychic medium abilities work and do you
think everyone has them?
Yes, I do believe that everyone has their own inner
knowing. You can hone this to be Extra Sensory
Perception and that is how the abilities work, extra
senses that help guide you to greater understanding of
yourself and your world.
What do you say to skeptics?
Healthy skepticism is a virtue in any inquiry, and
so is an open mind. There is an increasing amount
scientific data that’s supporting what I do in the
fields of quantum physics, neuroscience, consciousness
studies, and even cellular biology with the discovery of
the “Psychic Cell.” I don’t ask people to take my word
for it. There are other voices on this subject saying this
is real. View all sides and then decide.
What do you foresee as the future of

Unique, Handmade Jewelry
at The Copper Goat
have such detail. I do a lot of Mayan and Zapotec faces
so my influence comes mostly from indigenous art in
Latin America.
Lalo Flores opened The Copper Goat at
1132 Decatur in April 2012 as a unique
shopping experience venue offering
handmade jewelry, jewelry-making classes
and parties, as well as custom jewelry repair,
and lapidary services. Urban Legend sat
down with Flores in his workshop, located
in the store itself, to discuss his craft.
What made you decide to get involved in
jewelry-making?
I started about 30 years ago in Oaxaca,
Mexico. I liked collecting shells on the Pacific
beaches there and started making jewelry
with the shells. It was like meditation for
me, and people liked it. I taught myself to
solder silver and sold as a street vendor, then
eventually went to Taxco, Guerrero, for a few
years to study silversmithing. I’ve been in New
Orleans for 14 years, and I’ve expanded into
jewelry repair, cutting, and polishing stone.
The metals I work with most are
copper and gold and I teach others
how to work with them as well.
What is your favorite
jewelry to make? What has
influenced you?
I really like everything!
Well, the thing I like most is
sculpture. I started carving
faces in amber. People’s faces
have always interested me; they

What makes The Copper Goat unique?
Well, we make the jewelry we sell right here! People
really like that, you know, you can come in, find a stone
or shell, and sit at our huge jewelry bar to watch your
piece get made right in the shop. We also make jewelry
for our other shop, Lalosh Silver, here and do repair
and custom orders. People bring in all sorts of stuff
for repair; we replace lost stones, repair broken pieces,
string necklaces ... anything.
I saw on your website that you offer classes. How
does that work?
Jewelry-making is something special; to enjoy it you
need patience. When people come for the classes I give
them a 20-minute warm-up in wire wrapping. I tell them
to relax; you need to enjoy doing this...follow the wire
and the shape of the stone; it’s a meditation. When you
really enjoy the process, you want to make more. We
have all the tools here, and you just buy your materials
for earrings, a pendant, ring, or bracelet, and I’ll show
you how to make your idea into art you can wear!

We’ll never stop reminding people to shop locally, but here we put a
spotlight on something equally important: investing locally. Read on for
ways that you can shift your money from Wall Street to New Orleans.
In February, Stay Local! and the Urban Conservancy hosted author
and community economist Michael Shuman for a workshop with over
40 community leaders. Shuman discussed the emerging ways in which
individuals, businesses and neighborhoods can reinvest their savings
locally to improve New Orleans’ prospects of increasing its resiliency and
securing more income, wealth and jobs. Some of the top tools include:
Community Banking
Where do you do banking? Move your money
to a community bank or Credit Union. Small
and mid-size banks have just 21 percent of all
bank assets in the U.S., yet perform 54 percent
of all small-business lending.
Specialty CDs
A number of community banks have also
created specialty CD’s to provide customers a
way to invest in a fund dedicated to supporting
local businesses.
Cooperatives
Coops retain ownership and investment
dollars in the local community. Cooperatives
come in many stripes, including worker-owned,
consumer-owned, banking coops (credit
unions), and producer coops.
Pre-sales and P2P Lending
Sites such as Kickstarter enable customers
to contribute money to a business of their
choosing in exchange for a a token of
appreciation like a T-shirt. KIVA, a facilitator
of peer-to-peer lending to microentrepreneurs,
now operates in New Orleans, allowing residents
to contribute to local start-ups and see their
principal paid back.
Community Loan Funds
Communities around the country have set
up non-profit revolving loan funds that target
lending to locally-owned businesses.
“Slow Munis”
Municipal bonds are an attractive investment
vehicle because their income is exempt from
federal taxation. Cities can create bonds
to provide loan capital to targeted local
businesses, and use interest payments and
fees to provide a return to local bondholders
interested in investing in their city.
Crowdfunding
The 2012 JOBS Act will make it possible
for every American to invest at least $2,000
per business per year in small businesses, a
previously unaffordable type of investing.
Once the regulations are finalized in late
2013, individuals will be able invest in small
businesses via a website. If your favorite
business is looking to raise capital to expand
to a new location, you’ll be able to invest your
funds to help make that happen, and see a
competitive return on your investment as well.
State Banks
The Bank of North Dakota is the country’s
only state-owned bank. It has no storefront
and doesn’t compete with privately owned
banks and credit unions; rather, it provides
them lending and capital support to improve
their performance. Many observers credit the
bank for the state’s enjoying a very high level
of per-capita lending and a nearly non-existent
unemployment rate.

In October 2012, the Urban Conservancy
awarded the Broadmoor Neighborhood and
Massey’s Professional Outfitters the “Urban Hero”
award for their inspiring grit and devotion to
New Orleans.
Recipients received a commemorative
“Where Ya Rack” bicycle rack to be placed
at a location of their choosing to recognize
their contributions to the creation of livable
communities and their alignment with The
Urban Conservancy’s core values.
Broadmoor Neighborhood
When the Broadmoor Improvement Association
(BIA) was incorporated in 1970, Broadmoor was
already a well-established, multi-racial community
living in harmony. The association worked
continuously to improve the neighborhood. 12

Hurricane Katrina and the levee failures
decimated Broadmoor. In 2006, a city
commission suggested the area be transformed
into a drainage park. Within days of that
announcement, the neighborhood responded
with a rally on Napoleon Avenue, declaring
“Broadmoor Lives!” Through the leadership of
BIA president LaToya Cantrell, the neighborhood
became a national and global recovery model.
It brought in thousands of outside volunteers,
secured millions of dollars in investment, and
developed a redevelopment plan that has been
written about and studied extensively.
Today, Broadmoor boasts a new LEED-certified
library/community center, a $29 million
renovated charter school, an under-construction
health center and a lower blight percentage than
the city average. Broadmoor is now truly “Better
Than Before.”
Massey’s Professional Outfitters
When Mike Massey and his brother-in-law
Bobby Johnson came into the family business
as third-generation shopkeepers in the early
1990s, they decided to expand the stores’ focus
on the sports that they loved: skiing, hiking,
paddling, and camping. It meant shedding some
customers, probably a lot of revenue, and putting
much faith in then-relatively obscure brands like
Patagonia and North Face.
As the business grew to two stores, and then
to three, and began to enjoy e-commerce success,
Katrina helped them recognize what was missing
from their formula: New Orleans. “No matter how
connected we felt to the city,” says Massey, “To
our customers, our staff, and our reps and brands
– maybe even ourselves – we were just another
store on the outskirts of a big metropolitan area.”
After looking for properties all over town,
they decided to take their chances on a
flooded building in a part of Mid-City that was
still largely deserted with mostly shuttered
businesses surrounding them, and as Massey
says, “it started slow.”
Forty years since Massey’s first ribbon-cutting,
and almost five years at their North Carrollton
Avenue location, Massey’s is going strong. The
Mid-City store is humming every day of the
week, equipping lovers of the outdoors with
everything from clothing to camping gear, and
kayaks to bicycles.
Massey’s commitment to community projects
that promote active lifestyles has been constant
and significant, demonstrating their conviction
that collectively, New Orleanians can build an
economically, environmentally vibrant city.

Over the years, we at The Urban
Conservancy have had a few epiphanies. An
early one, and in fact the one upon which
The Urban Conservancy was founded in 2001,
was that New Orleans’ enduring historic
form–the neighborhoods, the architecture,
the green spaces, even our very founding
on a flood plain–is no accident, and that
its continued existence requires wise
stewardship by informed residents.
A few years later, we had another
epiphany: that New Orleans’ owes much of
its charm and allure to its local independent
businesses, whether professionals,
restaurants, retailers, or artists. While
healthy competition is a good thing, our
local businesses were up against impossible
odds: as taxpayers, they were required to
subsidize tax giveaways offered by the city
to lure national retailers to New Orleans.
That’s when we initiated our Stay Local!
campaign to raise the visibility of our
independent businesses as the cultural and
economic backbone of our vibrant city and
to advocate for equitable policies that will
strengthen, not drain, our local economy.
Our most recent epiphany came with
the advent of the BP Oil disaster in the
Gulf Coast in April 2010 and the resulting
economic and environmental devastation to
our coastal communities. That tragic event
opened our eyes to New Orleans’ role as
the urban core in a deltaic region. For all
practical purposes, this unique topography
means that New Orleans is a city built on
a lily pad. For The Urban Conservancy, this
has given the work we’ve always done to
advocate for sustainable, responsible land
use new urgency. Trying to keep the coolest
lily pad in the pond afloat is a big job.
We don’t know where or when our
next epiphany will come, but we do know
this: As long as New Orleans serves as our
inspiration, The Urban Conservancy will
do everything in our power to make our
city and our region environmentally and
economically resilient.
