EVP April 2015 Newsletter - Escarpment View Public School

From the Administrators
Our 5 year birthday celebration is around the corner. On Wednesday April 8, 2015 from
5:00-8:00pm we will be showcasing Escarpment View’s diversity be creating a number
of themed pavilions that represent the many cultures of the students and staff of the
school. Pavilions will be set up to represent the food, cultural artifacts, clothing, music,
languages, and the points of interest of each region. The opening address from the
school Principal which includes student presentations and performances, will begin at
6:00pm. The pavilions will be open for visiting between 5:00 and 8:00pm for all
students, family and community members. Please join us to celebrate the importance
of the school in this community.
The weather is improving and signs of spring are popping up throughout the
neighbourhood. Our resident Canadian geese have been spotted looking for a spot in
the front of the school to build their nest. It looks as though they may have chosen the
Kindergarten wing as their nesting spot this year! Our kindergarten students are thrilled
as they plan on studying them over the coming weeks. Please dress properly for the
spring weather as the playground is often wet and muddy. Students should be wearing
proper footwear and have a change of shoes for use inside their classroom. A change
of shoes helps us to keep the mud and dirt outside of the classrooms and school.
We celebrated Earth Day on March 27, 2015 during periods 5 and 6 when we as a
school turned off the lights and powered down the computers to conserve energy. The
Spring Food Drive took place during the final two weeks of March. Students and
Escarpment View families very generously donated a large number of food items to be
distributed through the local food bank here in Milton. On Wednesday April 8th, 2015
students and staff will be participating in International Day of Pink to encourage
students to be “upstanders” and create an inclusive learning environment for all
students.
Thank you to our Parent Council for the recent donation of 30 new Chromebooks. The
students and teachers are eager to integrate them into learning that is already
happening within each classroom. These computers will be available on a mobile
learning cart that can be moved between the classrooms.
The Administrative team welcomes the new Vice-Principal Cynthia Snowdon to the
school. She is an experienced Vice Principal who began working with us following the
March Break. Everyone in the Escarpment View family wishes Mrs. Febers all the best
as she begins her maternity leave. The community will be informed when the baby
arrives.
Please keep a watchful eye out for children walking to and from the school each day,
particularly around the crosswalks. With the improved weather conditions we anticipate
that we will have more students walking and riding their bicycles to school. If you
reduce your speed and obey all posted traffic signs you will be doing your part to keep
the students and families in our community safe.

Day of Pink is the International Day against Bullying, Discrimination, Homophobia
and Transphobia in schools and communities. We invite everyone to celebrate
diversity by wearing a pink shirt and by organizing activities in their workplaces,
organizations, communities and schools.
On Wednesday April 8th, we encourage all students to wear pink to be
“upstanders” and create an inclusive learning environment for all students.
Get involved with Earth Day!
Every year on April 22, over a billion people in 190 countries take action for Earth Day. People all over the world plant
trees, clean up their communities, contact their elected officials, and more—all on behalf of the environment.
Like Earth Days of the past, Earth Day 2015 will focus on the unique environmental challenges of our time. As the world’s
population migrates to cities, and as the bleak reality of climate change becomes increasingly clear, the need to create
sustainable communities is more important than ever. Earth Day 2015 will seek to do just that through its global theme:
Green Cities. With smart investments in sustainable technology, forward-thinking public policy, and an educated and active
public, we can transform our cities and forge a sustainable future. Nothing is more powerful than the collective
action of a billion people.

evening rehearsals at the school. Showcasing our
