The 1 st generation worked in the industry in the early 1930’s. In the forties, Mac started a family business called Mac Peyton & Sons. After graduating with a degree in Forest Engineering from University of New Brunswick, Glenn started a trucking company in 1971, G.T. Peyton Ltd. Operated at Harpoon River, Millertown, delivering pulp wood to the Mill until it closed in 2009. Sons, Kirk and Chad both worked in the family business. The family business continues to this day. Ambrose Hollett(Norris Arm) Born in Twillingate, he moved to Norris Arm at age 5, went to Labrador at age 11, and at age 12 he went to work in his father’s Sawmill hauling logs in the winter and doing contracting for the “Flyer Column”, this led to equipment and general construction and logging for the And Co. He officially retired at age 65, a very successful and hardworking man. He passed away March 3, 1997 at age 86. Leaving behind a legacy that still lives. Bond Beverages (Grand Falls-Windsor) If you grew up in Central Newfoundland you will remember the big orange crush sign in every store. Owned and operated by Cecil Bond, Crush became this region’s popular Soda. The Bonds operated a bottle plant on High Street until its closure in the early 70’s. C.T. Yates Store (Millertown) Carl Yates opened a business in Millertown in 1946 and closed it in 1978. He started out selling candy and tobacco but quickly became the center of shopping for that region. This was a general store in every sense, from groceries, furniture, clothing and even Ford automobiles. Carl was very active within the community, being a member of the School Board, Boy Scout Committee, United Church and first Mayor of Millertown. Ernst Becker: Becker’s Jewellers (Grand Falls-Windsor) Ernst Becker came to Canada from Germany in 1951, he began working with S.E. Tuma in Corner Brook. Not many Company’s in Newfoundland can boast of being in business for 175 years. Dicks and Company Basics located in Grand Falls-Windsor, St. John’s and Carbonnear is such a company. I was employed with the company for 15 years, manager at the local store here in Grand Falls-Windsor which is now managed by Paul Luff. I may be perceived as biased, but I can say owners/operators, Jim Austin and Barry Tilley are what we Newfoundlanders call “Salt of the Earth”. The management team leaders and directors David Read and Robert Larder are experts in office product knowledge. This team, unphased by the Big Box Stores continue to offer their customers quality products with competitive prices and good service. Congratulations.
