The company’s greatest asset is the natural resource of Lacustrine Triassic Mudstone clay which is a glacial deposit ideal for the purpose of making bricks and tiles. Despite the fact that, as the name handmade indicates, the vast majority of its products are hand thrown in the traditional manner the company has taken every advantage in its 17 year history of modern methods. These are exploited where they can be used without engineering out the character which is so special to this unique range of products. Thus for example, the company has installed two new state of the art kilns which are entirely computer controlled because it has developed a method of replicating the clamp fired bricks under modern firing conditions. From the outset the strategy was to produce bricks which were unique but similar to the original clamp bricks produced for centuries by brick makers in the Vale of York where the company is based. Thus, buildings completed in our products blend in extremely well with traditional buildings. This gives them special appeal for end users and planners alike. Builders and in particular self builders have found that the use of our original bricks greatly increases the kerb appeal of their developments. The hallmark of a York Handmade product is its rugged, random, weathered look which makes the brickwork look old from the moment it is laid. It therefore gives the customer an opportunity to make the property mature and comfortable in its surroundings as soon as it is complete. Remember too that the small extra cost of a genuine handmade brick makes a huge difference to a property. It typically accounts for just 4% of the total bill but 70% of the external appearance. This brochure seeks to introduce you to the range of products produced by the company. However, this brochure can only give you a flavour of the products and you are advised to contact our sales office for personal, individual advice on your project. In particular this will enable us to fine tune the colour blend and if necessary the size to suit individual requirements. 10770-York Handmade 28pp:EYK0953-York Handmade 28pp Production 14/11/08 14:56 Page 4 10770-York Handmade 28pp:EYK0953-York Handmade 28pp 14/11/08 14:56 Page 5 10770-York Handmade 28pp:EYK0953-York Handmade 28pp 14/11/08 14:56 Hambleton Blend Page 6 A sand moulded red brick with varying texture and white/buff tinges often found in old brickwork. This enables the brick to exhibit mellow shades of yellow mixed with purple and red. This brick has a strong resonance with clamp bricks of earlier times. The finish is hardwearing and improves over the years. Terracotta floor tiles are made from Lacustrine clay found in the Vale of York. The tiles are rough, sometimes bent and very individual. The tiles are extruded, hand-finished, predominantly red smooth but with patches of dark red and yellow tinges. The colour is essentially a random blend.
