West Hoathly
ANCESTRY
West Hoathly, nestling in the heart of Sussex, is
famed for its character stock bricks, not just
locally but throughout the country. Made from
local Wealden clays, West Hoathly bricks
continue to be fired in a traditional
‘clamp’, a method of firing originally used
for all stock bricks but largely now replaced by
more modern firing techniques.
However, in conjunction with original recipes and
techniques, the clamp-firing creates the unique
depth of colour and warmth developed generations ago
and now the trademark of West Hoathly. And once fired,
the bricks are sorted by hand to preserve the quality and
consistency of these colours.
West Hoathly is synonymous with traditional
stock bricks and, through its small range of
established a reputation for creating
seamless blending on extension and
refurbishment projects in the South East.
West Hoathly’s appeal also extends into both new build
and long-term phased developments explaining why West
Hoathly bricks continue to maintain their popularity.

Chailey
ANCESTRY
Located in the centre of the Sussex Weald,
Chailey continues to benefit from over 300
years of brick-making history, handed down
from craftsman to craftsman to create stock
bricks of true character.
Some of the methods may have changed
but Chailey still uses an original recipe,
including a blend of local Wealden clays
from its own quarry, and fires its bricks in a
traditional clamp to give the distinctive
warm Chailey colours that suit both rural and urban
settings. To ensure the consistency
and quality of colour and texture, all
Chailey bricks are sorted and packed
by hand.
The Chailey range of four traditional
Sussex stock bricks appeals to new
build developments, creating an
upmarket “village” feel to high
density metropolitan areas, and refurbishment or

Funton
ANCESTRY
Walk through any London street today and you will
almost certainly witness traditional London
stock bricks in work. Local brickearth, dug
from fields overlooking the Medway Estuary,
continues to be used in making the longestablished range of yellow London stock
bricks at Funton in North Kent.
Once shipped into London on barges, Funton
yellow stocks are still fired in a traditional
transverse arch kiln to give the unique golden yellow
colour development necessary to create the
famous London Georgian streetscapes. These
bricks are all hand-sorted for a high level of
quality and colour consistency.
The Funton Second Hard is now considered
the only original London yellow stock brick
from Kent. However, in ensuring that Funton
weathered and darker bricks have recently been
introduced to blend with existing brickwork on
refurbishment projects, especially on original London
townhouses built in the late eighteenth century.

Tonbridge
ANCESTRY
At Ashdown, near to the South Coast, the
time-honoured tradition of handmaking
is maintained with the famous and
unique Tonbridge range of traditional
stock bricks. Originally made at the
historic Tonbridge brickworks, these
handmade bricks, in a range of four
distinctive colours, use a special blend of
clays from the Tunbridge Wells sand.
Skilful positioning in the kiln ensures
for each product can be maintained.
The full Tonbridge range is
available in both 65mm and 50mm
sizes as standard, ensuring that the bricks
appeal to both prestigious new projects and
restoration work alike, where both colour and
dimensional requirements are key to successful
and attractive brickwork. The continued
magnificence of many Tudor palaces and houses is
testament to the craftsmanship in producing the
Tonbridge bricks to match centuries-old brickwork.

Pinhoe
ANCESTRY
The ancestry of Pinhoe handmade bricks is well and
truly encompassed by the Buckingham Range, a
popular range of red and buff multicoloured
bricks crafted by local brick-makers in Exeter
from Devonian clays.
The deep red fired colour, characteristic of these
iron-rich Devonian clays and enhanced with local
moulding sands expertly applied by
hand, creates one of the endearing
features of many of the Pinhoe
handmade bricks.
More recently the Duchy Range has
been introduced. With a more heavily
creased texture but using the same
hand-thrown techniques, Pinhoe
has an unparalleled range of colours and
The Duchy Range further extends the appeal
of traditional Pinhoe handmade bricks which
primarily meets the needs of new build project
specifiers in both the public and private
