Adam Schneider, Ph.D Candidate Department of
Anthropology, UC San Diego
“History Repeating Itself? Lessons from the Collapse of the
Neo-Assyrian Empire”
Adam Schneider is a PhD candidate in Anthropological Archaeology in the
Anthropology Department at UCSD. His research focus is the interrelationship of social transformation and environmental change, with a particular
focus on the Bronze and Iron Age periods in the Near East, Mediterranean
Basin, and Europe. He is currently in the process of completing his doctoral dissertation, in which
he will propose a multi-causal model, which incorporates a variety of cultural, economic, and environmental factors, to explain the process of collapse at Titriş Höyük, an important Early Bronze Age
urban center in the Turkish Euphrates Valley. Outside of his academic research pursuits, he also
works to help increase the role of archaeology in the ongoing effort to mitigate the impacts of global
climate change in the present.
11:30 am—Lunch and 12:00 noon lecture. Lunch is $14.00 for guests and $10.00 for Faculty Club
members (purchase required). Coffee and iced tea are provided in the meeting room. A parking
permit can be obtained at the front desk. You can be sure of a lively discussion! You do not need to
RSVP. Contact Judy Vacquier, [email protected] for more information.

Metaphoric/Geometric (Exhibition closes May 28th, 2015)
After moving to New York from La Jolla in 1997,
my first love was the Brooklyn Bridge: the gothic arches, intertwining cables, wide views and
perspectives change with every step, with the
time of day and the weather. While I explored
my new city’s avenues and streets, I had the
luxury of free time to dwell on details: reflections
of the buildings and bridges in skyscrapers, in
car windows, in rivers and even in the puddles;
unusual juxtapositions, scaffolding, museums,
abstract patterns ….these became the subjects of
my new passion for photography.
As Alain Cohen and I culled through my images,
categories emerged – abstracts of reflections,
Edith High Sanchez
stairways, arches, circles, vanishing points and
more. I realized that the places and views that spoke to me were expressions and
metaphors for interpreting my world. To Alain, the defining term was “Geometric” which
underscored the perceptible rigor of the artwork, and for me it was “Metaphoric” as I
remembered my feelings and passions at the time.
It seemed the perfect title with which to filter the choices. The ongoing experience of
looking at them on the walls and discussing them with friends renews those moments of
delight, brings new insights and motivates me to continue on this exciting journey of
discovery of myself and my world.
