“Sex, Syringes and Videotape: Innovative Approaches to Reducing HIV among Female Sex
Workers and Injecting Drug Users in the Mexico-US Border Region”
Steffanie A. Strathdee, PhD, is the Associate Dean of Global Health Sciences, Harold Simon
Professor and Chief of the Division of Global Public Health in the Department of Medicine at the
University of California San Diego School of Medicine. She is also an Adjunct Professor at the
Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Strathdee is an infectious disease epidemiologist who has spent the
last two decades focusing on HIV prevention in underserved, marginalized populations in
developed and developing countries, including injection drug users, men having sex with men,
and sex workers. In the last decade, she has published over 500 peer-reviewed publications on
HIV prevention and the natural history of HIV and related infections and the evaluation of interventions to reduce harms
among substance using populations. Currently, she is engaged in a number of HIV/STI prevention projects in
international settings including Mexico, India, Canada and Afghanistan. She also leads three NIH-funded studies of HIV
risk behaviors among drug users and sex workers on the Mexico-US border, one of which is funded through 2020 by a
MERIT award granted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. She directs a Fogarty-funded AIDS Training Program
between academic institutions in San Diego and Tijuana. Dr. Strathdee also directs the UCSD Global Health Initiative.

President and CEO
Stanford Management Company
John F. Powers joined Stanford Management Company as the President and CEO in
2006. Stanford Management Company (SMC) was established in 1991 to manage
Stanford University's financial and real estate assets. Today, SMC oversees over $25
billion of endowment and trust assets and temporarily-invested expendable funds.
SMC plays an important role in building and maintaining a strong financial foundation
to support the University's teaching, learning and research mission. SMC is a division of the University,
governed by a Board of Directors who are appointed the Board of Trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior
University. From 2002 to 2006 Mr. Powers served as the Managing Director, Director of Research and was a
member of the Investment and Management Committees at Offit Hall Capital Management LLC. From 1992
to 2002 Mr. Powers worked at Robertson Stephens, Inc. He was Managing Director and Director of Research
and served on the Management and Executive Committees. He initially joined Robertson Stephens as an
equity analyst in the Communications area. Mr. Powers began his career in marketing research and opinion
polling. Following business school, Mr. Powers worked in the telecommunications equipment industry prior
to moving into financial services. Mr. Powers received an A.B. from Cornell University in 1975, and an MBA
in 1983 from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. He is a member of the Investment
Advisory Committee of Google, Inc. In addition Mr. Powers is a lecturer at the Graduate School of Business
at Stanford University. Mr. Powers joined SMC in 2006.
