THE PARISH CLERK.
This story covers the genealogical history of a number of Fairhead Families. It also gives linking information
concerning The Three Brothers branch and the Bricklayers branch, and at the same time carries them back to earlier
days, and the Suffolk Weavers branch. The genealogical information contained therein makes this story perhaps the
most valuable to date. Doubtless a number of readers will fault some of the statements made and may be able to give a
truer account of the happenings. This can be only part of the full story and any additions will be most welcome.

Since the death of Albert (in 1976) material has been gathered by the late Mr. G.T. Fairhead, myself and
fellowship members in general and added to Albert's work to give a fuller and more informative story. This record is
compiled from Albert's original book and the new information collected since that time.
It should be noted that the generation numbers do not start at one, but carry on from a previous book, in this case The
Suffolk Weavers.
Where places are described as a ‘District’, this is the Registration District where the event was Registered. These were
introduced in 1837, and the names and boundaries of many of these Districts have changed over the years since. A list
of these districts can be found at http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/index.html

The Parish Clerk.
For the origins of the Parish Clerk Branch see the Suffolk Weavers.
Early in the seventeenth century the job of Parish Clerk was of no mean occupation, in fact this work was
possibly the most important of all Parish projects. In those days before the local authorities (as we now know them)
came into being, it was the church that undertook the work necessary for the well being of the inhabitants of the Parish
concerned. Firstly, there was the Lord of the Manor (the Squire) who inherited the Parish estate (mostly referred to as
the Hall Estate) from his forebears, which in a number of cases was handed down from the Manorial Estates.
He was 'Lord' accountable only to the King; under him were his Lieutenant, the Incumbent (Rector or Vicar)
with his faithful servants the Churchwardens, the Parish Clerk, and possibly two Sidesmen. This small body had to
attend to the needs of the Parishioners, spiritually and bodily, including the levying of rates and the sustenance of
paupers. Practically the whole Parish was owned and directed by the Lord of the Manor, whose forebears provided
adequate church space, which was expected to be used. The Church was a central establishment for the Parish and the
people's existence was tied to this establishment. A large section of the inhabitants were employed by the Lord of the
Manor and being so employed were subject to the discipline of their master, and others with some independence such as
Farmers, Shopkeepers, etc., lived in property owned by the Lord, to whom obedience was desirable. William was the
eldest son of Phillip 1669 and Mary (nee Below), one of a family of nine children.

This branch of the family continues to the present day, but also splits into sub branches, which
are covered in subsequent sections, in this document.

All born at Bedingham, Norfolk.
This was the world of William Fairhead (1697) who became Parish Clerk of Bedingham at a very young age in
1720. In those days the choice for this post was limited to the few fortunate individuals with the necessary educational
qualifications and William's parents, Phillip and Mary, equipped him for this task.
The wardens were possibly very capable in deciding who should pay and who should receive, but the matter
of keeping the books was a job more suited to the young Fairhead.
Although there was a large family born, a number died very young. It appears that in adulthood the
aforementioned William had possibly no more than one brother and two or three sisters.

William 1697 (441)
undertook his job with great zeal and accomplishment, mostly known as 'Will' Fairhead, his
services were perpetually being sought from one end of the Parish to the other. He grew to become a much loved
servant, respected and held in high esteem by all, and the appreciation he received for his work gave him rewarding
satisfaction. Elizabeth Rix (449) became his bride, being married, at St. Andrew’s Church, Bedingham, on the 2nd June

He continued to give this splendid service to his Parish for nearly 60 years until he was over 80 years of age,
surely a record for service to one community. He died, the church register states, "on the 29th May 1785 at the age of 87
years, 5 months and 18 days, an honest, industrious, inoffensive man, a pauper", his whole life and all that he possessed
given to the Church and the Parish. There could be some prejudice here, but Albert states that he felt that William
Fairhead 'was possibly the greatest humanitarian this parish ever had'.
His wife, Elizabeth, died on the 31 st March 1761, so William spent the last 20 years of his life without his companion.
During this period his family, who had made their own way, were growing older and had little need, so that the Church
and the Parish became richer.

Of the nine children at least five died in infancy, note the two Williams and two Samuel's. It was common in
those days to re-use a name when a child died, in an attempt to replace a lost named baby.
William undertook an unusual occupation for a Fairhead, that of a Ratcatcher under which heading all types
of vermin were dealt with, and in those days before poison was used this was a necessary and skilled occupation.
His wife, Frances, died in 1772 and William went to live at Mundham with his son John who had recently
taken over a farm there. At Mundham on the 12 th December 1776, William, at the age of 51, married Ann Hall (482), a
widow and this union produced three children thus :Anne (483)

listed as aged 23 born Bedingham and Frederick age 8mths born Topcroft. They are listed as living in Topcroft,
Loddon. At some time between 1851 and 1853 when Ann Amelia was born they moved to Lowestoft.
After Robert’s (4666) death in 1863, Mary Ann (535) (aged 39) married James Saunders (4671) (aged 48) at St
Nicholas, Great Yarmouth on 23rd September, 1865. In the 1871 census and again in the 1881 Census, they lived at 5
Days Yard, Lowestoft and James’ occupation is given as Fisherman. Both Ann Amelia (4670) and her son, James
Frederick (5188), were living with them in 1871, but only James Frederick (5188) was living with them in 1881. In the 1881

James 1832
died at a young age, on the 11th February 1836.
On the 18th October 1848 James appeared before the Norfolk Quarter Sessions at Shirehouse,
Norwich. Charged with Larceny which was committed on July 8th. He confessed and was sentenced to imprisonment
in the county goal for 10 days.
(537)
The report in the local paper was as follows :Norwich Mercury 21.10.1848.
"James Fairhead, aged 18 pleaded not guilty to an indictment charging him with having on the 23rd of July
last, at Saxlingham, stolen a coat, the property of Elizabeth Fuller. 10 days imprisonment with hard labour."
In 1850 he was in court again, and on the 20 th March he was on trial before Justices of the Peace Henry
Dover, Isaac Jermy, Samuel Bignold and Robert Gilbert. The charge was that on the 7 th March he committed 'Larceny
after conviction'. He was found guilty and the conviction was to be transported for 7 years.
The report in the local paper was :The Parish Clerk. Main Branch.

Norwich Gazette 23.3.1850.
"James Fairhead, aged 19, charged with stealing a Gun, the property of Robert Edwards of Saxlingham after
a former conviction. Sentenced to 7 years transportation."
From these two reports it can be deduced that James's birthday is sometime between March & October, although the
year of 1832 would appear to be incorrect, possibly this was the year in which he was baptised.
He arrived in Australia in May 1853, having departed from England on the 22 nd December 1852 on a ship
called the "Pyrenees". In the time between his trail and leaving England he most likely would have been held on board a
prison ship at Portsmouth until it was full. He was listed as Convict No. 1863.
James married Mary Welsh (538) (b 1839) on the 1st December 1859 at Yangedon Wesleyan Church, Western
Australia. Mary was born in 1839 and was the daughter of John Welsh (4610), a Stonemason. James was aged 27 and

This branch stems from the youngest son of William 1762 and Mary, (from p.16) who was :-
John 1808
(522)
who married Elizabeth Chittleborough (696) (a possible sister to Sarah who married his brother
Charles) on the 12th November 1828 at Topcroft. John unlike many bridegrooms appended his signature to the contract,
witnessed by his mother, Mary. Elizabeth was only 16 years of age, while John was 20.
They had the following Family :-
Esther (697)
Eliza Maria (5227)
James (698)
William (699)

The children were brought up in the Parish of Topcroft where John was a Ratcatcher, the same occupation as
his great uncle, William 1725. John died at Topcroft on the 29th July 1875, having been widowed since the 14th February
1873. At the time of the 1851 Census they were living in Loddon, although James was not registered there at the time,
there is, however, a James living with the Fuller family, who were neighbours, stated to be 18 years of age, and born at
Topcroft, working as an Ag Lab. It is quite probable that this is John’s son.

the next record of Eliza is the 1851 Census, where she is recorded as the House
Servant of Henry Cooper, a farmer at Upper Stoke, Humbleyard, Norfolk. She married John Moates Beckett (5226) (b
1834 Topcroft, bap 20/09/1834, Topcroft) on the 20 th September 1861 at Hempnall, Norfolk. Directly after the marriage
they moved to Gallows Hill Farm, Brailes in Warwickshire where they had the following family :-

John was the son of Thomas Moates (566) and Elizabeth Beckett (5567) (married at Topcroft in 1835). John and
Eliza remained at Gallows Hill until 1895, when they moved to Sibford Ferris, Oxordshire. They both died in 1912 and
were buried in the next village, Sibford Gower. Elizabeth on the 15 th February1912. It is possible John is a relative of
Elizabeth Moats who married Jonathan 1840 of the Bricklayers. John must have taken his mothers name as he was born
before the wedding.
James 1834 (698)
married Patience ? (6059) She was born abt 1834 at Ringsfield, Suffolk. James died 1892 Loddon
& Clavering District, and Patience died in 1900 in the same District.
William 1839 (699)

Sarah Maria Sutton 1852
(700)
was registered at Somerset House as 'Sarah Maria Sutton Fairhead' which
suggests that the name of her father could have been Sutton. She married Andrew John Turner (6101) in 1872, in Beccles,
Suffolk. They had 8 children (6636), some of whom went to London, and the boys were all in the printing trade.
Frederick William 1854 (701)
married Sarah Jane Neech (703) on the 10th June 1889 in the Wangford District,
Suffolk. She was born in 1862 in Beccles, Suffolk. Sarah age was given as 26 years, while Frederick's age was given as
35. His occupation was described as a Tanner. Sarah was the daughter of Samuel Neech (704), deceased, who in the past
traded as a Shopkeeper and Dealer in Beccles. A witness of the marriage contract was Frederick's mother, now stated to
be Esther Buck. They had one son :Frederick William (705)
6th May 1892
b
At this time it is understood that a shop was being kept by Sarah, the mother of Frederick William, at the Old
Market Place in Beccles and that Frederick, the father, was still a Tanner by trade. Frederick died in 1909 and Sarah in
1929 both at Great Yarmouth.
James Frederick 1856
(702)
married Mary Ann (Ellen) Long (706) (b.1851, Hales, Norfolk) at the Parish
Church of Great Yarmouth on the 4 th May 1876. His age was given as 21, but according to his Birth Certificate he was
13 days short of his 20th birthday. He was a Porter by trade. Mary Ann was 25 years of age , the daughter of a Farm
Bailiff at Hales where it appears that James took up work as a Farm Labourer. He became a much-loved parishioner,
taking a very active part in Chapel affairs and did much to bring about the New Methodist Church which bears his name
on one of the foundation stones. James and Mary Ann, who was often known as Ellen, had the following family :-

named after his father and uncle was, like his brothers and sisters, born in Hales
where he was destined to live all his life. Unlike his father, he was not content to spend his life as a farm worker and at
the beginning of this century he started a Cycle business at a spot on the junction of the Beccles and Haddiscoe roads at
Hales. From this small beginning a much larger enterprise emerged and with the advent of the Motor Car the business
evolved around this revolutionary change, the imprint still existing for all to see "Fairhead's (Contractors) Ltd." on the
fascia of the petrol filling station and works. Today the Fairhead in the flesh has disappeared, but the name still remains
under the guardianship of a business successor. Frederick was married twice, the first time to Ada Howard Hawkes (970)

Clarissa 1814 (733)
Clarissa 1816
died at the age of four months in February 1815 at Ludham.
Albert states in his record - "like many Fairhead women, I suggest she inherited business
qualities and undertook shop keeping. She was doubtless a very independent individual, again a common characteristic
found in the female species of the family, but with all her independent and masculine qualities the female propensity
arose", and she became the mother of two boys thus :(734)

She was a very remarkable woman and as the mother of these boys would normally be subject to much
gossip, particularly with such contacts as shop keeping would bring, but it appears that she went through life defying it

all. It would appear that both children were brought up outside their mothers care, William possibly by his father and
Walter by his uncle William. At the time of the 1851 Census she was living with two of her brothers at Ludham Street,
Tunstead, they were George stated to be a Carrier and James, a Wheelwright.
Why Clarissa did not marry will never be known , but perhaps it was this peculiar characteristic of the
Fairhead women that a number remain unmarried due to partly to an independent streak in their nature. She died at the
great age of 91 years on the 19 th November 1907, thus completing a long and successful business career, and was buried
at Ludham. A memorial stone marks her grave.
Although she has long passed from us the name of Clarissa Fairhead the shopkeeper still lives in this
Broadland village.

married Elizabeth Wright (765) on the 3rd August 1851 at Ludham. It appears that
George Silver was a blacksmith by trade, and also opened up a carriers business. Perhaps this was William James 1818
who gave it up. During the 1851 census he was living with his sister Clarissa at the shop. This would have been before
he married in August of that year. George and Elizabeth had three children :(738)

William Harcourt 1837 (758)
regarding William the church register reads :-
"William Harcourt son of Clarissa, born 25th October 1837,
baptised 29th December 1837".
Nothing more is known concerning this first son of Clarissa.
Walter Bathurst 1839
(759)
In the case of Walter the second name was much used and as no entry can be
found in the Register of Births at Somerset House in the name Fairhead, it is possible that both children were registered
as William Harcourt and Walter Bathurst, and it is very much in question whether William and his descendants became
Fairheads or Harcourt's.
Walter as stated was brought up by his uncle William (Clarissa's brother). Again as in the case of William
Harcourt, Walter was mostly recorded as Walter Bathurst and may be seen in the census return of 1841. In the return
Albert found the entry of Walter Bathurst, age 3, in the household of William and Ann. Also he found a second Walter
Bathurst, age 30, Vicar of Ludham. However, later he found a record of marriage between Walter Fairhead, Coach
Proprietor, father unknown, residing at Stalham, and Fulleretta Neslen (780) (of St. Martin of Palace, Norwich, daughter
of George Neslen, Farmer, b abt 1836 Burgh Castle, Suffolk) in 1873 at Norwich. Walter's age was given as 35, while
Fulleretta was 37. It would appear that Walter, while making his coach trips to Norwich, encountered his bride. In 1901
he was listed as an ‘Omnibus Driver’.
For some reason Walter did not share his mother's home and that small town of Stalham became his choice.
The second name, Bathurst, is now dropped and does not appear to be used any more. Walter and Fulleretta brought 4
children into this world thus :Alice Maude M. (781)

As already stated this branch was brought about by John (476), the son of William 1725 (452) and Frances
(Thurston) (472). He, together with his brother William (475), was born at Eaton by Norwich, John's birth being on the 6 th
August 1752, while William was born on the 8 th May the previous year. Father William as a Ratcatcher, had apparently
moved to this village in the execution of his work for the Unthanks who had interests here as well as in Bedingham.

John lived to the great age of 88 years and in the latter part of his life retired to live in Loddon where he died
in January 1841. He was, however, buried on the 1 st January 1841 at St. Peter’s Church, Mundham with wife, Ellen,
who died on the 10th February 1830. A memorial stone marks their grave on which the wife's name is given as Eleanor.
By John's Will, his sons Charles and Richard were appointed as Executors and his estate was divided
between his seven children, suggesting that they had all survived him, an unusual occurrence at that time with such a
large family.
