host the 2nd annual Bunny Hop 5K on Saturday,

county hosted the group
from Michigan. They
spent a week showing the

highlights of Emporia
and Kansas, including
the William Allen White
home, a day at the Flying
W Ranch in the Flint
Hills, and a trip to the
Hutchinson Salt Mines
and Cosmophere. The
community is invited to
come to the fundraiser
and visit with 4-H members about their travel

Safety Clinic on Monday,

p.m. The clinic will be held
at PrairieLand Partners,

HWY 50). The clinic is geared
toward youth in grades 5
through 12. Youth will learn
proper safety procedures
when operating walk behind
and riding lawn mowers,
the importance of care and
maintenance schedules, differences between the types
of grass and their care, and
tips on starting their own
seasonal lawn care business.
The cost for the clinic is

Dear ReaderAs I walked down
Merchant Street last week,
heading from the Post Office to the Gazette, I came
upon a woman carrying
a bag of books. Not just a
bag with one or two books
in it, but a Solid Bag of
Books. Perhaps the mild
weather made conversation
between strangers more
natural, because I asked her

Lyon County Historical Facts
Provided by Lyon County Historical Society
The 24th of December, 1891, was a perfect winter day for the solemn duty of
committing to earth the mortal remains of Senator Preston Plumb. Men who had
crossed the prairies with Plumb to fight for freedom in Kansas mixed with men
who had hauled his printing presses across the Missouri River down to Emporia. Men and women who had followed him to the frontier to build this new city
rubbed shoulders with others who had settled far out on farms because of their
faith in his dream for the future of Kansas. Women who had sewn the flag that they
put in his charge when he went to do battle to preserve the Union wept quietly. All
of these had seen him develop and had aided in his elevation to a national figure
who challenged the powers of oppression and stood with the downtrodden. Kansas
and the country had lost a great man.
Over time, Neosho Rapids has had four churches welcoming members to worship. The first church, a Baptist church sometimes called just “The Little Church,”
contained the bell that now stands behind the Community Center. The bell was
hauled across the prairie before being hoisted into its steeple. Over the years, the
church deteriorated, but in 1904 the steeple was rebuilt and repaired. In 1910, it was
painted. A Free Methodist Church, a Catholic Church, and a Methodist Protestant Church all served the community. Today, only the Neosho Rapids Memorial
United Methodist Church remains in town. It counts its history as stretching back
to those early days when small groups met under elm groves along the Neosho
River.

I inherited this beautifully painted 11-inchtall porcelain vase and
would like to know its
origins. The base is
marked in blue with a
crown above the backto-back initials "JK" and
below that "Dresden."
I believe "Germany" is
written below. I cannot
make out any markings
in the gold stamp, but
the incised marking
appears to read "(ASTERISK)8/4 CV." The
word "Chrysanthemum"
is written around the
edge. Can you help?

Before we begin, we
want to thank you for
giving us such complete
information about this
spectacular late 19th or
early 20th century vase.
This story really
begins with Augustus
the Strong (1670-1733,
aka the "Saxon Hercules"), elector of Saxony
and king of Poland. The
king, who reveled in
his physical strength,
almost bankrupted the
various kingdoms and
provinces under his
control with his obsessive buying of Asian
porcelain.
There is one story
that he traded a company of soldiers for one
Japanese Imari vase.
Enter Johann Frederich
Bottger, an alchemist
who was fleeing the
king of Prussia because
he had failed to turn
base metal into gold.
Augustus essentially intercepted him, imprisoned him and charged
him with the task of
creating gold.
Of course, Bottger
failed once again, but
he did promise to do
something that no European had yet accomplished _ make Chi-
nese-style hard-paste
porcelain. In those days,
that was essentially the
same as making gold,
and in 1709, with the
assistance of Ehrenfried
Walther von Tschirnhaus, Bottger succeeded
in making hard-paste
porcelain.
This feat was ac-
complished in Dresden,
the capital of Saxony,
but for security reasons, Augustus had
the production of the
new material moved 14
miles down the road
to his castle at Meissen. Meissen porcelain
is treasured today, and
porcelain was never
again made in Dresden
(but it was decorated
there).
The lovely piece in
today's question was
decorated by Richard
Klemm (the mark is
a back-to-back "RK,"
not "JK"), whose firm

During the awards
segment of the banquet program Saturday
evening, Susan Fowler
was presented with the
Robert E. Tilton Award,
which recognizes
outstanding leadership
on the county level to
organize Democrats,
field strong candidates,
and work to mobilize
support for Democratic
campaigns. This award
is considered the highest honor that can be
bestowed to a Democratic County Chair by
the Kansas Democratic
Party.
The Lyon County
Democrats remain active this month, with

and at their monthly
meeting Saturday,
March 21 at 10am at

The class entitled
“Building Credit to Get
the Things You Want”
will help the consumer
to find out why a good
credit score is important, where to access
your credit report, dispute errors that may be
in a credit report and
how to protect yourself
from identity theft. The
class will be
presented
by Elissa
Moore, Certified Housing and Consumer Credit
Counselor
and Educator, HCCI.
The classes
are funded
by a grant
from the Consumer
Financial Protection
Bureau (CFPB) and
in cooperation with
Housing and Credit
Counseling, Inc.
