part of Nell’s story. She
became a mother under
mysterious circumstances, was kidnapped,
held for ransom and
then rescued by Johnny
Liazo, the organized mob
boss of Kansas City. Her
second husband was
the controversial mayor,
attorney and retired U.S.
Senator James A. Reed.

The Meneley Quartette held forth at the Opera house last Thursday night as
advertised. This quartette is one of the best on the road today and gives a bigger variety of entertainment than most of the traveling quartettes and choruses.
Their singing was excellent and took well with audience. Miss Cora Ricketts,
as soprano, made a decided hit with the audience. She has a beautiful voice
under perfect control. The other members are Hazel Ricketts as alto, Chester
Ricketts as tenor, and C. W. Meneley as basso. These people get music out of
most anything. One of the instruments looked something like an old-fashioned
flax brake and they pounded on it with a miniature drum stick. They called it a
Marimbaphone, and it made fine music. Then they had another gagerino they
called organ chimes, but it looked to the writer more like the interior of a corn
sheller; but the music that Meneley and Miss Ricketts could jerk out of it was a
caution. We must not fail to hand a flower or two to Ricketts for his funny faces
and sayings; he simply captured the audience.

Emporia will be hosting their annual High
School All-Star Basketball games for area
seniors on Saturday,
March 28 at the W.L.
White Auditorium in
Emporia. Forty senior
basketball players from
20 area high schools
are participating in
this year’s event. This
is the 26th year of the
Optimist Club’s involvement in the All
Star event, and the
42nd consecutive year
that these games have
been held in Emporia.

State and is a distinguished alumni of ESU.
Lyon County Historical Facts
Provided by Lyon County Historical Society
Some of the rural schools that served the Neosho Rapids area included
the Frog Pond School, Ireland School, Dry Creek School, Junction School,
and Wooster Mound School. In town the early school was a two-story brick
structure complete with bell tower built north of the railroad tracks. However, people feared for their children crossing the tracks, so eventually the
schools were located south of the tracks. The Neosho Rapids Seminary, a
three-story brick preparatory school, stood northeast of town. After it was
struck by lightning, it was never rebuilt.
Emporia’s Pay Up Week was scheduled for October 2-7, 1922. “I’ll pay
you – You pay me,” a billboard supporting the idea read. Another campaign
was held the next year from October 29-November 3, 1923, by the Lyon
County Retailers Association. The billboard that year reversed the slogan:
“You pay me. I’ll pay you. Every thirty Days. Begin Now.” A billboard in
1923 was posted at the corner of Congress Street and 3rd Avenue. In 1925,
billboards urged “Pay your bills promptly” in their campaign held from October 29-Nov. 7. “See everyone you owe,” stressed the Lyon County Credit
Bureau. Had the Lyon County Retailers Association changed its name to
the Lyon County Credit Bureau, or had the credit bureau taken over the
concept of encouraging paying bills? Did Pay Up Week continue after
1925? We don’t know, but it’s good advice!

Hills Beef Fest Cattle
Contests. This is the 29th
year for the Flint Hills
Beef Fest, which is headquartered in Emporia,
Kansas.
What is the Flint Hills
Beef Fest? The Flint Hills
Beef Fest is a celebration
of the Kansas Flint Hills
grass cattle industry to
promote the kind and
quality of cattle that graze
the Kansas grasslands.
Five contests of stocker
cattle are conducted in
pens of three head with
separate divisions for
steers and heifers. The
contests are:
Grass Futurity – Measures weight gain on
grass
Live Stocker Show
– Quality judging on
muscle, confirmation &
overall performance on
grass
Feedlot – Weight gain
in the feedlot
Carcass – Carcass
quality on grade & yield
Overall Gain – Spring
weigh-in to harvest
For this year’s contest,
the cattle will be received
on Saturday, April 25
from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
at Emporia Livestock
Sales. The cattle will be
turned out to grass on
the following Monday
and will graze until approximately August 20.
The cattle will graze at
the Highland Ranch near
Olpe, Kansas again this
year.
The winners of the
Grass Futurity and Live
Stocker Show will be
announced during the
evening awards banquet
on Saturday, August 22.
Those cattle entering
the Feedlot and Carcass
contests will be shipped
to the feedlot where they
will be fed for 140 days.
For this year’s cattle
contests, nearly $18,000
in cash awards will be
handed out!

USDA Finalizes Procedures for Sorghum Referendum

The U.S. Department
of Agriculture (USDA)
is announcing procedures for the upcoming
referendum regarding
the continuation of the
Sorghum Checkoff Program and is announcing
the dates it will conduct
the referendum. The Sorghum Promotion, Research, and
Information Order
requires that a referendum be conducted no
later than seven years
after the start of assessments, which began on
July 1, 2008. For the
program to continue, a
majority of those voting
must favor the continuation of the order.
USDA will conduct
the referendum beginning on March 23, 2015,
through April 21, 2015,
at county USDA Farm
Service Agency (FSA)
offices for producers
and the Agricultural
Marketing Service office
for importers. Ballots
may be obtained in person, by mail or facsimile
at county FSA offices,
or via the Internet.
Any eligible person
engaged in the production or importation of
sorghum from January
1, 2011, to December
31, 2014, is eligible to
participate. Individuals
are required to provide
documentation such as
a sales receipt or remittance form that shows
they engaged in the
production or importation of sorghum.
The Sorghum Checkoff Program, and its
13-member board, is
authorized by the Commodity Promotion,
Research, and Information Act of 1996. The
Sorghum Checkoff is
intended to be a national, coordinated, selfhelp marketing program
designed to strengthen
the position of sorghum
in the marketplace,
maintain and expand
existing domestic and
foreign markets and
uses for sorghum, and
develop new markets
and uses for sorghum.

This 12-inch-tall vase
was my grandmother's.
It was in her hope chest
and I thought it was
so beautiful I have had
it displayed for years,
but she passed away
without telling me any
details about this piece
and its history. Can you
tell me anything about
who manufactured it,
when and where it was
made and if it is collectible?

Dear K. H.-L.:
We recognized this
vase immediately. The
man who owned the
pottery company that
made this piece was
something of an egomaniac, and his name
was almost always part
of the mark, when a
piece was marked.
The owner's name was
Samuel A. Weller, and
he started life as a poor
lad born in Muskingum
County, Ohio.
He worked for a time
in the Bluebird Pottery,
which was located near
his home. There, Weller
learned to throw a pot.
As soon as he could, he
left Bluebird and established his own one-man
facility, where he made
flower pots.
It is said that initially his flower pots
were decorated with
house paint, and when
Weller's wagon was
full of these utilitarian vessels, he and his
horse and wagon would
go around the neighborhood selling the
humble wares door to
door. Weller did so well
at this that he opened
his first full-scale
pottery-making factory
in Zanesville, Ohio, in
1882.
In 1890, Weller was
able to build a threestory pottery in Zanesville that employed 60
workers, and in 1895,
he purchased the old
Lonhuda factory in
Steubenville, Ohio. This
last purchase allowed
Weller to enter the art
pottery field, which
he did by producing a
brown slip decorated
ware almost identical
to the Lonhuda wares,
but Weller named his
variety "Louwelsa" (for
his daughter Louise and
himself, "S.A. Weller.")
Weller produced
some fine art wares well
into the 20th century,
but during the World
War I era, Weller (like
most art potteries of
the day) began to turn
to cheaper products
known as commercial
art ware. These were
molded, not produced
by hand, and artistic
additions _ if there were
any at all _ were far less
extensive than they had
been in the past.
The piece belonging to K. H.-L. is from
a Weller line called
"Burntwood," and
it is commercial art
ware from the company's middle period
(1918-1935). Burntwood pieces have a
tan background with
a dark brown, almost
black band around the
neck and base. The tan
section is decorated
with dark, etched lines,
and the items resemble
closely the craft pieces
that were made in the
early 20th century using
an alcohol burner and
a needle or some other
sharp piece of metal
that was heated in order
to sear decorations into
wood.
Weller's Burntwood
came in a wide variety
of decorations such as
fish, mice, chickens,
griffins, peacocks,
Magi, camels and As-
syrians. The piece belonging to K. H.-L. has
lovely arts and crafts
depictions of grapes and
