THE GOOD SHEPHERD
This Fourth Sunday of Easter is traditionally referred to as
“Good Shepherd Sunday.” Today we listen to the words of the
Lord as he refers to himself as the “good shepherd who lays down
his life for the sheep.” It is sometimes so difficult for us to grasp
the reality that anyone would lay down his or her own life for the
sake of someone else. This is especially true in a society that
places high value on power and personal advancement, often at
the cost of “trampling” on other people in order to climb the
ladder. Today’s scriptures point to the one we are called to
emulate—the one who lays down his life for his sheep. Today’s
scriptures challenge us to discover ways to bring life to those
around us—to build up rather than to tear down.

mountain retreat in preparation for
our "EVEREST" VBS June 15th19th. We need lots of help! No

time, creative people, and many
who just want to help in some way

a mighty team of many to share the
work as we create an environment

Reflections
TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN
SHEPHERD:
Many nations
have honored the nameless heroes
of war with a memorial to an
“Unknown Soldier”. Poems and
songs are written in memory of
these anonymous souls who fought
and died for the freedom of others.
Thousands of people visit these
monuments every year to stand for
a moment of silent recognition. The
depth of such selfless courage
humbles and uplifts us.
Yet there is another who remains
forgotten by far too many. One who
has given all, sacrificing unto
death, to save us all. Daily His
sacrifice remains unacknowledged
in homes and hearts across the
world, His victory casually ignored
by the very people whose freedom
He won. Perhaps we need another
monument in our country and our
hearts, dedicated to the “Unknown
Shepherd” who has given His life
selflessly. And may a flame burn
beside that monument, eternally
reminding us to carry the news of
this self-sacrificing hero to those
who have yet to hear His story. “I
am the good shepherd. A good
shepherd lays down his life for the
sheep.”

Bishop Emeritus Weigand honored
with Benefactor Award from Society
of St. Vincent de Paul in Sacramento
The Sacramento District Council of the Society of St.
Vincent de Paul honored Bishop Emeritus William K.
Weigand for his "abiding love for the poor" with its
Benefactor Award at its ninth annual Benefit for the
Poor dinner April 17.
Bishop Weigand's commitment to the poor reaches
back to his days as a missionary in Colombia and
continued into his service in Sacramento, Paul
Starkey, president of the council, told the gathering at
the Red Lion Hotel in Sacramento. (
"He spent 10 years working in Cali, Colombia, and
brought that spirit of encounter with the poor to our
diocese," Starkey said. "Bishop Weigand has always
been in our corner and supported the work of the
society. In his tenure the society grew in numbers and
its ability to serve the poor. Without his unfailing
support and assistance, this lay organization would not
have met its present success in its outreach to the
poor.'"
In accepting the award, Bishop Weigand looked back
on his decision to leave his home Diocese of Boise,
Idaho, to work as a missionary.
"I became most interested in the poor and, therefore,
in my work with St. Vincent de Paul Society, during
my tenure in Cali, Colombia," he said. "For much of
my time as bishop I have worked through others to
assist the poor but for 10 years in Cali, I worked one
on one with the poor, with families. That was the
highlight of my ministry and greatly enriched me and
gave me an insight into the work of the Vincentians.
"When I came to the diocese I pushed to have more
parishes, eventually all parishes, to have conferences.
We decided that 25 percent of the Annual Catholic
Appeal would go back to parishes precisely for their
efforts to assist the poor in many different ways,
including the work of the society.
"I admire the society not only for its outreach to the
poor but its spirituality in the name of Christ," Bishop
Weigand said. "We try to see the person of Christ in
the person of the poor, to respect them and develop
their full potential as sons and daughters of God."

FAMILY ROOM
Take Time to Smell the Roses
(but please don't pick them!)
For new members in our parish family, a little history
is in order at this spectacular time of year. Fr. Simon,
pastor here for many years, is both a gardener and a
lover of roses. The beautiful rose plants that surround
our worship space were chosen and planted by him,
for our enjoyment. Roses are his trademark: he
planted roses everywhere he went as a pastor. Now we
can honor and remember him each time we are
blessed by the beauty they give. Of course, even more
importantly, the flowers remind us of the beauty that
our God showers down on us every day, whether we
stop to notice it or not.
The roses would not thrive without the caring
cultivation of our groundskeeper, Rich Ripp. As
anyone who grows roses knows, they are a lot of
work. They are worth it - but the pruning, deadheading, fertilizing and watering require time and
dedication. Rich cares for the plants (and our "plant")
with attention to detail and an eye to the overall needs
of our church home. We appreciate both his expertise
and his giving heart, and enjoy the beauty around us
thanks to his efforts.
Our philosophy at Our Divine Savior is that the roses
are a gift to the whole parish (and the city around us)
for everyone to enjoy. Please feel free to look and
smell, but leave the roses on the plants so that
everyone can see the profusion! (Yes, it DOES matter
if you pick them; please don't!)
