Thomas à Becket’s murder in 1170 and his canonisation in 1173 played an important part in the foundation of the town. Miracles occured at his tomb and pilgrims travelled to the shrine. Brentwood was also home to the boy martyr, William Hunter. One of the main roads in the town centre is named after him. A memorial stands close by Wilson’s Corner in the heart of Brentwood and commemorates the silkweaver’s apprentice who was burnt for his religious beliefs at the age of nineteen on 26th March 1555. Ingatestone Hall Open to the public on certain days during the summer, this 16th century building was built for Sir William Petre in 1558 and was visited by Elizabeth I in 1561. It’s the sort of place where, on a lazy Sunday afternoon, you may simply want to point the car and see where you end up! Shenfield A short distance from Brentwood Town Centre, Shenfield is s a traditional village. Independent traders dominate the high street. Serviced by a railway station that has links to centrall London, this is a popular residence for commuters to the city. ty. Ingatestone With a population of around 4,500 this traditional village was established in Saxon times and was mentioned in the Domesday Book. Within a conservation area, there are a number of listed buildings maintaining a beautiful village elegance. Blackmore Blackmore is one of the more attractive Essex villages. To the South, on a moated site, is the church of St Laurence, which is all that remains of an Augustine Priory of Blackmore, founded in the 12th century. After the dissolution of the Priory in 1525, the chancel of its church was demolished, but the rest of the building was retained as the parish church. The 15th century timber bell tower is one of the finest in England. Doddinghurst The name Doddinghurst is of Anglo-Saxon origin and means 'the wood of Dudda or his people'. It is first recorded in the Domesday book as 'Doddenhenc'. Herongate Herongate is located close to the extensive park of Thorndon Hall. The manor was anciently called Ging-Ralph, or Ralph’sing and it was purchased from the Mordaunt family by Sir John Petre, the first Lord Petre, in 1573. A new Thorndon Hall was built in 1770 by the 9th Lord Petre. Mountnessing The main feature of Mountnessing is it’s windmill, Mountnessing Post Mill, which was built in the early 19th century. It is preserved and owned by Essex County Council and is a picturesque timber structure on a circular brick base. The Mill is no longer used, but it remains a landmark visible for miles around.
