An Introduction to Hand Sewing & Stitching
Saturday 20 September

During this workshop you will learn how to follow a pattern using both basic hand sewing and
decorative stitching. You will work with small patterns, felt and thread to create your own ‘mini-feltie’.
You don’t need to have sewn before to take part … why not try something new?

Introduction to Drawing

Learn the basics of drawing to help you develop confidence and skills. Use a range of drawing
mediums and surfaces and work from various subjects, and from observation, to explore line, tone,
form and texture.
Materials required are cartridge or drawing paper (A3 minimum size), 2B & 6B pencils, a putty rubber
and round synthetic hair brush size 10.
Optional materials are various papers up to A2 size, charcoal, pastels, watercolours, a range of brushes
and water soluble pencils.
For beginners and those wishing to refresh or develop their skills.
Handmade Pamper Workshop

Experience the fragrant and colourful world of handmade cosmetics. Make a tootsie bar, bubble bar,
bath bomb and crème cone to take home in your own presentation box. The aroma of melting wax
will help you relax as you indulge in some ‘me time’ and create your luxury handmade pamper kit. As a
gift from us a ceramic oil burner will be included.

The Crochet Year – Autumn Berry Garlands

As the leaves begin to fall, celebrate the season and create a crocheted autumn berry garland to
decorate your home or garden. Autumn motifs will be used in a variety of ways.

provided.
Furniture Upcycling
Saturday 25 October

Make your own “chalk paint” and learn techniques such as crackling, distressing, layered distressing,
decoupage, stencilling and texturing. Basic seat recovering will be demonstrated where applicable
(please note that this is a basic seat pad, not re-upholstery).
Furniture and all materials will be provided. Participants will choose a piece to work on and then take
home, or alternatively, participants can bring their own furniture.

adventures!

Festive Flowers for Beginners

An Introduction to Woodcarving

Through this course you will learn about different woods and their properties and explore many types
of woodcarving techniques safely and effectively. The tutor will also demonstrate how to keep chisels
in order through different sharpening techniques. The aim of the course will be to produce your own
relief carving of a leaf.

Mossley Mill Tours
Cost: £2 per person
Group tours of the Mossley Mill site are available on request throughout the year. Tours provide an
insight into this historic site and its development from a 19th century flax mill to the multi-functional
space it is today.
As part of the Decade of Remembrance a replica First World War trench has been constructed at
Mossley Mill and a visit to this may be included if desired.

The Flax Gallery Open Exhibition: Call for Submissions
The Flax Gallery is introducing an exciting new exhibition for 2015 and is calling upon local crafters
and artists to submit their works for this sensational opportunity to showcase your talent.
The show will welcome work in a diverse range of media from drawing, painting and photography to
ceramics, jewellery and sculpture. Any craft or art submission from the Borough will be considered.
To be eligible for entry you must live, work or study within Newtownabbey Borough and be 18 or
over as of January 1st 2015. Works should be recent and not previously exhibited. A fee of £10 will be
charged per piece (maximum 3 pieces) but no commission will be charged.
