CASE STUDY: Excalibur helps Pulleyn Transport slash energy bills with the Energy Efficiency Financing scheme en, Gareth Hold DIRECTOR G MANAGIN Excalibur Energy, Amesbury P ulleyn Transport is a provider of specialist temperature controlled services. Their site in Reading includes a 42,000 square foot frozen and chilled storage facility, which consumes 80% of the site’s electricity. Under pressure to meet the company’s climate change agreement targets, Pulleyn approached Excalibur to investigate the potential to reduce the energy consumption of the coldstore. With over 30 years’ experience, Excalibur is one of the oldest energy management companies in the UK, delivering energy efficiency projects for refrigeration, liquid chillers, air conditioning, pumps, fans and boilers. At Pulleyn Transport, the cooling system of the storage facility comprised six individual systems, it was not economic to modify them individually due to their small size. In addition, existing condensers were in poor condition and not optimally located, Excalibur proposed to convert the system into a multicompressor pack. This would incorporate the latest energy-efficient technology with a new oversized condenser, Liquid Pressure Amplification and inverter control of the lead compressor and condenser fans to match energy use to energy requirements. Financing for the conversion project was sought from the Energy Efficiency Financing (EEF) scheme. The scheme, a joint initiative between the Carbon Trust and Siemens Financial Services Limited (SFS), is designed to provide finance for energy-efficient equipment for businesses, where the expected savings in energy costs offset the monthly equipment finance costs, effectively making the investment zero net cost or even cash positive. Excalibur’s energy modeling showed that the modifications could drive down electrical consumption by over 30% with a return on investment of just over two years. This was confirmed by the EEF independent assessment. As a recognised supplier of the EEF scheme, Excalibur was able to arrange a threeyear financing solution for Pulleyn Transport on the £81,950 project, allowing it to pay the monthly equipment finance cost from the expected energy savings. Without the need to provide a large upfront capital, meaning the project could proceed swiftly. “Cost savings on energy resulting from the refitting project are exceeding our expectations.” To avoid disruption the project was phased with one compressor added to the new pack at a time, allowing the cold storage plant to continue to operate without any effect on temperatures. Initial monitoring showed that the upgrade project already exceeding expectations, with energy consumption cut by almost Energy Efficiency Made Easy For more information, please visit www.energyefficiencyfinancing.co.uk or call 01753 434 476 Energy saving assessment by Financial Services provided by 50% and carbon emissions reduced by 330 tonnes. At the same time, Pulleyn Transport was meeting all of their obligations to the company’s climate change agreement. John Hoole, Financing Quality Manager of Pulleyn Transport, comments: “We were made aware of the EEF scheme through Excalibur. This specialist facility enabled us to obtain the technology we need to drive down energy costs and to reduce our carbon footprint. The financing from EEF came through very quickly and the whole process was really smooth and efficient. Cost savings on energy resulting from the project are exceeding our expectations and the investment will pay itself off in around two years. All in all, it was a very successful project and we are very pleased with the results.” knowing that projects are undertaken under the watchful eye of the Carbon Trust. Energy savings assessment audited and validated by their independent energy specialists gives customers the assurance that expected energy savings will match – if not even exceed –the monthly equipment finance costs. Many of our customers are under mounting pressure to meet carbon targets and by being able to link savings to affordability, the EEF scheme reassures our customers that their projects are financially and commercially viable.” Excalibur and the EEF scheme Gareth Holden, Managing Director of Excalibur, comments: With its technical expertise and in-depth knowledge, Excalibur has worked in sectors as diverse as pharmaceuticals, airports, food production, hospitals and universities, helping its customers to improve energy efficiency in their facilities. “The major factor that differentiates the EEF scheme from other lease options is the fact that our customers, such as Pulleyn Transport, have confidence in Having already established a close working relationship with the Carbon Trust, Excalibur quickly seized the opportunity to become a recognised supplier of the EEF scheme when it was first launched. With the scheme providing an affordable alternative to outright cash purchase, businesses’ green investments are no longer subject to capital budget restrictions. Technology suppliers like Excalibur can therefore offer customers the most energy-efficient solutions that truly meet the individual business requirements. Being an EEF-recognised supplier gives Excalibur the competitive advantage to offer its customers a comprehensive sales package incorporating financing and technology, enabling the company to close more deals. In addition, Excalibur can benefit from improved cash flow as fast payments of invoices are made direct by SFS, usually within 24 hours of receipt of post-installation documentation. Prior to finance being approved, specialist advisers at the Carbon Trust perform energy savings assessment to check that expected energy savings should match equipment finance payments.
