Ltd, the UK’s largest
drinks wholesaler, supplies
over 16,000 on-trade premises
with drink products, hospitality
training, labour management
and marketing support. As
an ISO 14001 Environmental
Management System accredited
company, the business believes
that working ethically, safely
and in an environmentally
conscious manner is essential
to the success of its business.
(SFS), the EEF scheme is designed
to provide finance for energy efficient
equipment for businesses, where the
expected savings in energy costs offset
the monthly equipment finance costs,
effectively making the investment zero
net cost or even cash positive.
With the financial support of EEF,
Matthew Clark was able to retrofit the
lighting in the six depots. On average,
energy savings of over 70% were
achieved across the sites and a carbon
emissions reduction of 469 tonnes per
year. With a total combined project cost
of £250,000 and a financing period of four
years, the company even enjoys a cash
positive benefit of more than £1,700 per
month since the energy savings exceed
the monthly finance payment.
Nick Talbot, National Buyer of Supplies
and Services at Matthew Clark,
commented, “The EEF finance application
process was very straightforward and the
involvement of the Carbon Trust further
adds to the credibility of the scheme.

The company is constantly seeking ways
to increase energy efficiency and reduce
its carbon footprint. Having upgraded
the old lighting in its Glasgow depot to
energy efficient fluorescent lights with the
help of energy savings consultant, Mark
Group Ltd, the firm wanted to replicate the
project at six further warehouses located
in Runcorn, York, Birmingham, Shefford,
Shepton Mallet and Park Royal in London.
Due to its limited budget, Matthew Clark
required a financing option that would
make the investment affordable.
As an approved supplier of the Energy
Efficiency Financing (EEF) scheme, Mark
Group recommended the EEF financing
alternative to the drinks wholesaler. As a

the sites with regard to the level and
quality of the lighting. So we are more
than pleased about the improvement in
the working environment for our staff as
well as the obvious financial savings.”
Andrew Seaman, Business Manager
at Mark Group, commented, “A great
advantage of being an EEF approved
supplier is that we can provide customers
with a full proposal that incorporates both
technology and financing. This simplifies
things for customers since availability
of finance is a determining factor for
investments in most cases. It also allows
us to differentiate ourselves from our
competitors. An additional benefit is
that prior to finance being approved, the
Carbon Trust conducts an independent
on-site energy savings assessment to
verify that the expected energy savings
will match or exceed the equipment
finance payments, giving our customers
extra assurance that the projected figures
that we provide are accurate. This is
particularly valuable since businesses’
main concern is that savings may fall
short of expectations in reality. The
approval process on finance applications
has always been fast and effective and
the EEF team is very supportive.”
